Mine just died after 9 months of service. Couple of hours of COD 3 and couple of hours WOT, and in the middle of the game; crash. Now it plays dead and the only things working on it currently are the lid hinges, nothing else, no life signs. Previously had some problems with WOT that windows switched suddenly by itself to my desktop, and sometimes the space-key didn't seem to "take". No other worries until this total crash now. Used always recommended graphic settings and updated drivers for the games and the game mode... Noticed right after the crash, that power button area was very, very hot. And that's all folks! Luckily I took extra guarantee offered by the store, so I should be ok. I hope.

The system comes with 2 year warranty from MSI, so call them up directly to receive warranty service.
Not sure about the extra guarantee from the store can do for you.

Hi all...hopefully it is OK to post a "for sale" post in this thread, but I am selling my GS70 as I have a few laptops for my business, and this one has now become not as needed. It is this version, registered with MSI warranty on 12/4/2013:

    MSI Notebook Official Website | G Series - GS70 2OD-002US Gaming Notebook / Laptop

    It has:

-dual 128GB SSD boot drives (striped)
    -16GB memory
-1TB mechanical HD for larger storage needs
-2GB GTX 765m dedicated graphics card, plus Intel HD graphics, and Windows will auto-switch for best blend of performance/power

This laptop is running the latest version of Windows, and the laptop comes with a MSI Dragon protective sleeve, the power adapter, and of course, the laptop itself. Some very slight scuffs on the lid, but nothing that you can see from far away.....long story short it is in great condition, and fully working. There are no dead pixels, and the owner is a non-smoking, no pets owner :)

Asking $1400...please respond to my CL posting (San Francisco Bay Area). please....if you are not local, I will accept checks, etc...but will wait until they are cleared to ship the laptop...or I guess there are escrow services out there, too, but I don't really sell things of high value that often, so I don't know :)

MSI GS70 17" gaming laptop 16GB Dual SSD RAID plus 1TB HD

    Is this thread still up?
was just wondering how everybody cleaned their fans.
my right fan is running slower than how it used to be, or even compared to the left fan.
can't find videos or instructions on how to clean these fans.
anybody can give me instructions or advices? thanks!

You can use compressed air to do it, however be sure to disconnect all power sources before cleaning, and let it dry a bit before turning the system on.
But if the problem persists, then the problem could be related to the fan itself so it would be recommended to contact MSI directly for warranty service.

If using compressed air be careful not to make the fan spin with it. It can damage the fan and circuitry.

    Just little bit of moisture.
If you give it a few seconds to dry, and it will run fine without any issues.

Hey guys - it's been a long time since I had to dig up this forum for help.

So I've had my GS70 for about 9 months now, and the first thing I did was the updates including the (new at the time) fantable, and in the past month the fan has decided to go crazy. Almost all of the time that my laptop is on my fan is running very loudly, and I'm only using internet or watching movies - so no demanding games or programs. It is also strange that if my computer charging while the fan is being noisy, I can unplug the charger and it will calm the fan down for a few minutes immediately after unplugging it. I didn't want to admit that my computer might actually have an issue, which is why i waited a few weeks before posting this. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know a fix for this?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Try cleaning up the heatsink and vent first using compressed air, then wait till any liquid dries out before turning on the system.
    2. Update BIOS & EC last.

Hi guys - I'm struggling to get into the bios / boot anything

I changed from UEFI to Legacy to perform a firmware upgrade on one of my SSD's - but I can't seem to get back into the bios to change it back, so can't boot up.

I've been trying to press DEL as it boots, but nothing happens - the MSI screen comes up, flashes, then goes to a screen telling me to insert boot media.

Am I doing something obviously wrong?

Edit: Yes, I'm an idiot - I was hitting Esc instead of Del - I'll go stand in the corner and think about my actions.

I know this is a super noob thing for me to ask, but it's been a couple years since I've messed around with anything in BIOS - It's probably just because I"m way too careful with this computer, but can you walk me through updating the BIOS and EC? So I have something to follow while I'm doing it. Thanks so much!

I would like to recommend that you try the first option first before doing BIOS/EC update.
The BIOS can be done within the BIOS, or Windows, and EC is done in Windows.
Note the instructions are also provided on the download page in the links below.
    BIOS download
    EC download

It's recommended to update it based on the same version sequence, such as 50A -> 50F, and 1505 -> 1509.
If you still have trouble with your machine, then feel free to let us know.

There probably are those that have on this system, but you can get a quicker understanding and feel for it by opting to test the technical preview.

Windows Technical Preview - Microsoft Windows

Just be sure to back up your data, especially the recovery partition! You can also clone the entire drive, alternatively, then save the image. Always have a fail safe to fall back on.

    Ok, thanks Gentch.
Was wondering though, where do i fire the compressed air? i mean, do i have to open the back part or do i just shoot it from the fan's opening on the sides? thanks!

Basically, spray it thoroughly, but best if you can remove it first then spray after to allow the dirt/dust to escape.

Hi Guys, I have a new GS70 2OD-002US and I updated to Win8.1. Is it too late to upgrade BIOS and EC? Why is it recommended to do these BEFORE 8.1?

It is, but if you are not encountering issues then you don't need to be worried.
Please go ahead and update the BIOS & EC whenever you can.

It's to avoid issues that can occur between the 8.1 drivers and older ec/bios combinations. It does depend on what version you have.

Hey Kevin, it turns out I already had the latest version of BIOS - but I went ahead and followed the instructions and updated it anyway...better safe than sorry.
Also I'm not sure how to tell if I have the latest version of the EC, and it wipes all the data on the computer when you update that right? So I don't want to do that unless I know for sure I am not up to date.
I also tried the compressed air a few days ago and so far there is no change. So when I look at my EC version I don't see "1505 or 1509" - can you tell me how to find out if it's up to date or not? Is there anything else besides the EC that could be causing this problem?

    Thanks for your help!

Take a picture of your System Information under BIOS setup and post it here so we can find out for you.
    But 1509 is the newest.

Got it back now from the warranty service. They had to change the motherboard, took about a week to get it back and now it works again...so far. Bought also a fan base for laptops in the hope it will keep it cooler.

Totally perfect! Took it straight to service, not the store where I bought it. No troubles at all with anything, they also took the SATA hard drive out immediately since I needed few files for the University the very next day and I used my dock to get them. Took the hard drive back and they put it right in without any extra charge. I have no complaints!

Here is the picture of my System Information screen (at bottom)

However I have a new problem that I'm really frustrated with - I was finally forced to update my computer to Win 8.1 from Win 8. There was a pop-up notification about updating with no option to cancel. So after the update my touchpad did not work and that was frustrating to deal with but not a difficult fix. The issue I'm having now is that I can't open the File Explorer from my taskbar.. or any location for that matter. When I click on the File Explorer there is a loading wheel next to the mouse arrow, during this time the computer is frozen (for about 5-10 seconds). Then the screen blinks and then continues working after it blinks, but the File Explorer will not open. I should note that I can click on other shortcuts like My Pictures and then it functions properly and I can search within the File Explorer. The File Explorer is probably my most used taskbar icon and I would really like it to function.

    Please help!
    Thanks :)

Your firmware version is 1508 (1771EMS1 Ver 5.08) therefore 1509 is the one you can flash to.

    Thanks Kevin

I plan on flashing to the newer EC as soon as I back my files up. Do you know if it would cause any problems to do a system image to a flash drive before the newer EC, then once my EC is up to date just use the system image to get all my files back onto my computer? I don't know if having a different EC would make a difference or not, but it would be great to find out before trying it! :)

It won't, the EC shouldn't cause any problems with system image since it handles the raw stuff for the hardware devices on the system.

Hey guys, if you don't like the touchpad (by default it is terrible!), make sure to install the Touchpad FIRMWARE (not just the DRIVER)

    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GS70-STEALTH.html#down-firmware&Win8.1%2064

Follow the instruction PDF there ... it takes about 30 minutes to upgrade and it does something significant ... now you can Right-Click links without moving the cursor, and it feels much better overall.

And of course you have to install drivers from MSI site if you want everything working correctly ;)

I have a GS70 with a 970m and love it but I'm worried about how much heat it's putting out. I pretty much hit a max of 88C with everything maxed in whatever I play. The games run fine but i'm worried about the temps. What are these cards rated at and should I be worried?

Hey Kevin, I'm hoping you can help me. I quoted my previous post about a new problem I was having as soon as I upgraded to Win 8.1 and no one has been able to offer any solutions - also the problem has been getting worse. I can't even empty my recycle bin, when I right click on it (when it definitely has items in it) the option to empty it is grayed out and before I would get the chance to click it - the computer freezes for a few seconds then closes everything and returns to the desktop. I still can't open my file explorer without that happening, and if I open it from a random location like "my pictures" it will eventually crash when I go to do a task like unzip a downloaded folder. This is becoming a huge problem because I can't access new files that I download and I just can't use the computer properly while this issue is happening.

    Please help me out,
    thanks

All I can suggest is to do a factory reset first to see how it goes.

Unfortunately, you can't turn off the LEDs, however you can check the cable connection to verify if the power source is on a separate wire and if it is then you can disconnect it. Do it with caution.

paper or duct tape is not very elegant.
maybe you can set with a 3d printer a mask in front?

I may sound like i'm an idiot but I have a problem i can't solve with the laptop, just got it a few months ago and worked great until somehow recently the wireless adapter has been turned off and i can't figure out how to turn it back on, the Windows 8 slider toggle is greyed out and not switchable and a diagnostic tells me to turn it on with a switch or function key but i can't seem to find anything like that on the laptop. Can anyone help me out by chance?

There ist no „FN + F6 or F7“ on our GE70. But you have install the SCM.
If is not install look here: MSI Deutschland - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more
SCM is a built-in system control tool used to manage device settings by using Fn hotkeys and the SCM control panel. It also provides the ECO engine setup. Note: Please take note that before installing SCM, Microsoft.NET Framework 4 should be installed first. You may download it directly from the Microsoft Official website.
Note: the Windows Control and the SCM-Control do not work together very well here by my GE70.
will this solve your Problem? otherwise uninstall the WIFI-driver and install new Driver.

hey guys, i have an irritating issue concerning my rig.

    I hated Windows 8 and uninstalled it;
Installed a copy of Windows 7, and installed all the windows 7 drivers from here MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more.
I have minor issues like the inability to boot to Windows 7 if my boot mode is not set to Legacy. UEFI and UEFI + CSM always brings me back to the BIOS screen. Is there something I'm missing?

Another issue, is that my time in windows 7 is glitchy. Whenever i sync my windows time manually, BIOS will take the last sync time value and store it. But then, when i go to the BIOS settings, my time is frozen, and never increments, or increase in value. When i boot back to windows, the time is at the last value that I shutdown. For instance, If i shut down at 5:48pm, it will stay at 5:48pm the next time i gp to windows. On random occurences, the time resets entirely to a random value.

I'm suspecting this is a battery problem for the time being, but other settings in BIOS are actually saved, so I'm not sure. Currently I'm still under warranty, and it is very discouraging to bring it to service just to change a small battery. Right now, I'm considering all the options that are do-able by the user (me).
Anyone has any leads on this?

Any form of help is appreciated, thank you! :)
