IPS is an LED type and matte/glossy is merely a coating on the screen. IPS was originally developed by LG I believe and is the most widely referenced panel, however other brands have slight differences in technology. The 1080p panel for the GS60 is PLS, which is basically IPS except made by Samsung. The 3k screen is IPS made by Panasonic. The 4k screen is a Pentile RGBW panel made by Samsung. Here's my rundown on the screens:
GS60 1080p FHD: Samsung PLS, superior viewing angles, matte coating, able to play all games, 99% sRGB
GS60 3k: Panasonic IPS, superior viewing angles, glossy coating, high pixel density, able to play many games, 92-94% sRGB
GS60 4k: Samsung Pentile RGBW, superior viewing angles, glossy, ultra high pixel density, plays very fewer games at full res, poor yellow reproduction, limited to 48 Hz, questionable battery life, 97% sRGB
Razer Blade 4k: Sharp IGZO IPS, average viewing angles, glossy with glass panel(glare city), ultra high pixel density, plays very few games at full res(870M), beautiful colors, 98% sRGB
Aorus X3+: Same as Razer Blade panel except matte
Y50 1080p FHD: TN panel, horrible viewing angles, good response time, plays all games, 62% sRGB
Y50 4k: Samsung Pentile RGBW, superior viewing angles, glossy, ultra high pixel density, plays very few games at full res, poor yellow reproduction, limited to 48Hz, questionable battery life, 97% sRGB

I was able to remove the bezel using only a credit card starting at the top corners, and using a lot of patience. However, it had minimal effect on the bottom light bleed. I was able to get rid of the corner light by remounting the panel.
And then, I sat on the bezel and cracked it. So don't do that
Talking with MSI to hopefully get a replacement.
-
If they source one, please let us know. I would like to buy a spare so I can try something else.
-
Incidentally, the worst bottom bleed spot is right where the Samsung tag is wedged under the tape on the back of the panel... coincidence?
-
Does this happen also for FHD screen ?
-
Yes I have it on mine. It is the only negative I have with this laptop, and it is only visible on very dark scenes
-
Now Cyberport officially sent me an email that my pre-bought notebook has an unidentified arriving time.
They told me last week it would be this friday, but as it seems their seller wont give it away...
Oh man those german notebook sellers are making me crazy -
Thank you for such detailed reply. I do Google the difference between matte and glossy screen, so basically the later is more vivid in color but reflect the light more than the former, right?
Originally I planned to get the 4K ver., but after know the 48hz and bad screen, I now target between 6G 1080P and 3G 3K. I may struggling until Thanksgiving week to make my final decision, lol. -
I heard people saying it's normal, and the bleed do diminish as you use the laptop for a period. Though I can't tell if it's true since I don't have this laptop.
-
Do you know what the FHD screen is on the GS 70? Thanks!
-
Keep that in the GS70 thread. But it is a TN panel with average viewing angles.
Check the LinusTechTips review for more details. -
Yes it's true that the refresh rate is limited to 48P Hz regardless what resolution you are on.
-
Thank you so much for finding out about 48Hz on 4k panel. I decided to go for 3K model. I emailed to one of your customer service rep, Joyce, to set up the listing on Amazon so I can order by using Amazon card. I'm excited!

I ran Firestrike with the lid open, lid closed and lid closed with a cooling pad. Got a score of 6581 and max temp of 79°F with the lid open. Got roughly the same score but the max temp rose to 88°C with the lid closed. The cooling pad did nothing. GPU-Z indicated some minor throttling due to thermal limits.
Well I guess that answers that. You can certainly use it but I wouldn't do hardcore gaming on it with the lid closed. Turning the settings down would certainly be a feasible option. To be honest, I don't know many thin gaming laptops that won't add a few degrees when the lid is shut. Heat dissipation through the metal above the keyboard area is typical, so putting a screen in the way isn't going to help any. -

The machine does draw a lot of air from the keyboard so yes watch closing the lid.
-
I'm going to talk to MSI and ask for a replacement screen because I already can't be bothered to replace the whole laptop and start all over again. I'm hoping they won't pull the usual "it's normal for all screens" crap because I won't take no for an answer, this is really bothering me for the darker scenes/backgrounds. Will keep you posted on the answer.
-
From what I've read, yes, it happens to all types of screens at least on the GS60.
-
I don't really get how it could diminish over time. Can anyone elaborate on that ?
Edit: Apparently this forum doesn't have the option to delete a post. Sorry for the spam. -
Cooling pad wouldn't really do much given that the laptop motherboard is upside down. Air is drawn in from the top and expelled out the sides and the back. No air is drawn from the bottom of the laptop which is actually pretty interesting given that almost all laptops do something like this. -
Does that mean if I use four bottle cap on four corner to lift up the laptop, it would help cooling?
-
Since there are no air intakes on the bottom of the laptop I don't think will be terribly helpful.
If the air intakes were bigger on the top of the laptop I think that cooling would be improved, but I'm not an engineer. -
Anyone know how long the battery lasts when just surfing net on low settings? Pretty much the only concerns I have with this laptop are the backlight bleed and battery life. Specifically the gs60 064 FHD 970 6Gb
-
I have keyboard backlight on '1' screen brightness at 30%, 3k model and I'm running Chrome and Steam and with 97% battery I'm getting 2 hours 45 minutes. On a good day I could probably pull 3 hours. Reviews who say 4-5 hours are crazy. I have no idea how they're achieving this.
EDIT: Backlight bleed is only noticeable watching a dark film or when the laptop boots up for the first time. After that I don't find it to be noticeable. -
ok thx for feedback, decent battery would definitely be a bonus but not really a deal breaker as far as screen goes I guess ill just have to cross my fingers and hope for one that isn't too noticeable only other option would be to wait on a p35x although im sure it will have some issues of its own.
-
I've never heard of diminishing backlight bleed. Worsening, maybe
-
Just now noticed this. Looks like MSI didn't disable hibernation mode for us, so if you want to save your SSD and also reclaim about 10-12GB, turn hibernation mode off.

No, nothing is coming in the bottom. It already has little rubber feet on the bottom that keep it elevated slightly also.
I went with the 3k version through Amazon, Xotic was the reseller. Love it! -
Is it possible to upgrade the fhd models to have 3 or 4k screen in the future?
-
I get around 3 hours of light web surfing + trivial windows operations. Brightness at 40%. Practically I find it a bit low but it doesn't bother me much. The laptop is exceptionally beautiful, sleek and powerful.
Yes, there is light bleed. You will notice it the most when dealing with dark images on screen especially when the display lid is semi closed.
But all these are not on the extreme side. I researched a lot about it too before getting mine. The 044 version. I'm in complete love with my laptop. It definitely is a cute beautiful hunk. -
Also curious about what needs to be done. I know it is possible... is it as simple as swapping the screen and possibly a driver update?
-
If you're able to source the screen, it's just a matter of opening the bezel and replacing the panel. I'm not positive on if the wiring connector is the same but it also can be sourced I'm sure. Chances are it shares the same connector. I've only been able to see them for sale in bulk(20 or more). If there's enough interest, everyone could potentially share a bulk order.
-
Well just received my gs60-064 and so far im very pleased. Screen has no noticeable backlight bleed, it runs very quietly while idle and low load, yet to really put it to the test tho so not sure how load it will actually get. Think I may have received a gem as far as the screen goes tho. The only thing that slightly concerns me is that it says battery is at 92% and not charging while plugged in?
-
Don't worry, it will start charging when dropping below 90%. I had the same concern when I got mine.
-
I don't know its acting pretty weird when I unplug it, it says its still pugged in and charging
update* downloaded updates and turned off laptop when I turned it back on the issue seems to be resolved so not sure if it was an update or it just needed to be restarted -
I posted a question in the "what to buy thread" and am nearing a final decision. The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 064 was the first laptop that caught my eye. Just curious the overall consensus here. All mostly happy with purchase?
This Ghost Pro looks darn sexy and the thinness is what really has my attention. Havinga a heck of a time deciding lol. So many neat options right now. -
I've had the aorus x3+, razer blade and the y50. The gs60 meets all my needs where all the competition fell a little short.

The 1080p and 3k models use a different cable.

MSI is covering every segment with their niche products, that's a good thing because customers have more choices to select from. -
Good to know. The motherboard connection is the same though, right? So it would just be a matter of getting the right wire to hook up to the panel itself?
-
I just got my GS60 - 044 which was ordered on Amazon on Nov 09. How can I redeem the NVIDIA Pick Your Path bundle for one Ubisoft game?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's not.
One is eDP (3K), and the other is LVDS (1080p). -
So they have a different motherboard for models with different screen resolutions? This listing for the FHD panel on eBay says it's eDP. 15 6"LCD Screen Samsung LTN156HL01 for Asus Q501LA LED EDP 30pin WUXGA1920X1080 | eBay
Isn't that the screen model in the GS60 or am I mistaken?
Edit: Only reason I'm bringing it up is because the 1080p and 3k panels on the UX303LN were interchangeable. It would seem inefficient for MSI to make a different connection for FHD when there are plenty of eDP FHD panels out there. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
I believe the motherboard is the same, so it might be a cable conversion. -
Well I just bought the gs60-064 its pretty good overall the only things that aren't very good is the trackpad which really kinda sux, tried downloading firmware and driver updates hoping it would help but unless im missing something then its just not very good. Kinda bounces around makes it hard to click on small icons and what not. Secondly the battery life is pretty crappy, about 3 hrs with settings turned down, unless im missing something here too. Other than these two things everything else seems pretty great. Done alittle gaming on Swtor and cpu and gpu stayed at about 60 degrees in ultra settings which I found hard to believe fam didn't really rev up either. Maybe its just not a very demanding game, but it sure made my razer blade 14 get super hot. Im still on the fence about whether or not im gonna send it back and try out the p35x. The only reason I would consider it is the shoddy battery life, track pad I don't really care about tho it would be a bonus
-
I've read about the trackpad in a few reviews. Hows the screen?
-
You may not be able to. If it was purchased through a 3rd party you won't be eligible, even if the order was fulfilled by Amazon. Also, Amazon for some reason only lists the desktop GTX 970 cards on their promotion page even though the Nvidia promotion includes the 970m
-
Can anyone please tell me the exact name of the PLS fullhd panel used in Gs60?
reaction time is crucial, i just need to know it
Thank you for any help -
It might not, but it's not the reason you said. LTN156HL01-102 is a 30 pin eDP panel, but it only needs 2 lane eDP. while the 3k one can still use the 30 pin eDP you need a 4 lane eDP to run 3k. you can still get the same eDP but you won't have enough lanes for it, unless MSI gives out 4 lane eDP for models, which they may or may not doKevin@GenTechPC likes this.

As someone mentioned, it is Samsung 156HL01-102.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this.
