Were you able to get another bezel? I just got an email about an interesting engineering machine: Ultra Thin Mobile Workstation | GoBOXX 15 SLM | BOXX

Look familiar? This chasis seems to be with at least 4 different manufacturers now, so that bezel is out there somewhere. That one has no branding on it too.

Yep, sorry I forgot you had asked about this. MSI ordered the part for me (but with a 4-5 week lead time), which is pretty great customer service in my eyes.

    Part 307-6H2B215-D37, $19 + shipping

It's just another re-brand of MSI notebook. This one is their workstation version of MSI GS60 called WS60:

    MSI Global WS60 2OJ (3K IPS Edition)

Here is a fresh new NotebookCheck review (in German):

    Test MSI WS60 Workstation - Notebookcheck.com Tests

It's not that interesting notebook, it has just very weak GPU - Kepler based Quadro K2100:

    NVIDIA Quadro K2100M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

It's basically Quadro version of GT 750M, the same old GPU that every top-of-the-line Macbook Pro has. Much weaker than even GTX 860M, not speaking about GTX 970M.

Yeah, I noticed that card. Crazy how expensive it is too... The 970M runs Solidworks just fine so I'd have no use for it anyways.

It all depends on the type of CAD being used and how much it can take advantage of quadro vs geforce.

    Hi!
Has anyone tried this 970m with racing simulators? Above all rFactor2 or Assetto Corsa.
If yes, how many FPS with high settings in 1080p?

    Thanks :)

    Guys,

My GS60 with 6GB 970 is on its way, I am wondering is it possible to disable the 2 m.2 drives or make them the secondary storage as I want to replace the 1tb drive with a 960 SSD and make that my main drive.

    Thanks for all your help.

Won't the raid m2 drives be faster the 960?

Yes they will be faster but also if you have an issue with one of them it will be a pain in the a@@ to swap as I believe the mem and m.2 drives are on bottom side of motherboard as to where the 1tb drive is easy to get to and swap

I would rather sacrifice a little speed than space and reliability the SSD I have is emlc which although expensive but very reliable.

    Thanks for any inputs.

Yes I've stripped mine down and they are indeed on the back of the motherboard. You could break raid array so you'd have a total of 3 drives if you were worried about reliability as an extra precaution.

    Hi Mardon,

Thanks for your replies, it should have boot options menu, I would probably keep the raid there but manly place everything on the 960. So there should be an option to make secondary drive the main drive.

Then I can just clone the raid over to the 960?

Can you confirm this in your bios?

    Thanks!

To be honest, you might as well break the RAID if you're not going to boot from it. Chances are you'll be using those drives as secondary storage and RAID slows your cold boot time(at least from what I've seen) and is 2x more likely to fail. I'm still not convinced that RAID makes things all that faster for SSD anyways.

You will be able to use macrium reflect free to create a disk image and put it on the new drive. You can then get that as your boot drive and finally break the Raid if required.

Has anyone from EU bought the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro-064 from either Xotic or Gentech?
I'm interested abut the VAT payment?

When I ordered books from US Amazon shipped to EU, procedure was like this:

    1. ordered at US site, paid regular US price
    2. they shipped it from US almost immediately, arrives to Europe pretty fast (few days)
    3. package gets stuck in customs (couple of weeks)
    4. got notice from customs that I'll have to pay VAT (this was a percentage from price of goods AND shipping charges)
    5. one week later after the notice also package arrived to my local post office, I had to pay VAT to receive it

Summary: don't order from US to EU if you can avoid it (independently of how good US seller is, it's local package processing on EU side which will make mess, outside of anybody's control :().

If you buy from within one EU country shipping to another EU country it should be smooth, no extra charges, no extra delays, commerce across EU should have the same conditions as commerce inside single EU country (for me ordering from US to EU added ~3 weeks extra waiting with package being in customs + post office limbo after arriving from US to Europe).

Note: notebooks may not have duty to them (different goods have different duty rates, some are excluded altogether), but you'll not escape VAT.

What can i do about the noise of the fans?
I received mine today and its really loud for me.
I tried to set it over the windows power settings on balanced and turning it in the msi dragon center on power saver(fn+f7 if i remember correctly).
Is there anything else i can do?
I did only code and the fans were at 2k rpm

Depends what trips you were getting on cpu and GPU. Which fan was running loud, both? Dragon center should show temp of cpu and nvidia GPU if engaged.

Going to MSI Roadshow now, to finally decide if i'll go for FHD or 3K screen. Hopefully I will not hear the fans while about 150 people will be around LoL ...
God damn it ... The only thing that concerns me most is that 3hours battery life and how loud it really can be :/

I talked to you because of the noise the fans make even in light usage.
For some reason, the dragon center cant read the GPU Temps, i tried to make it with Afterburner, which also couldnt read the GPU Temps.
I installed yesterday the newest Nvidia Drivers and it still doesnt work.
Btw how is the Battery time for you?
Here is the screenshot i wanted to show you.
The MSI Center says 53° for the CPU, which is quite correct, since CoreTemp says it had 54°.
I only had Firefox, Spotify and Origin open to finish downloading Battlefield 4 :D
Is there anything else i can do, besides the Windows Power Managment and the Green Mode?

Previous versions of the 870M version EC fan profile allowed for the CPU and GPU fans to turn off. Unfortunately, MSI removed the ability to turn off the CPU fan even at minimal temperatures, so it will always be at idle. The EC fan profile I previously posted will lower the idle fan speed to the minimum to cut down on a little noise, but it's still there. Another weird thing that I never noticed until a little while ago was the GPU fan is always on(even when not using it). This is different than the 870M version, where the fan would shut off when not in use. I have no idea if this can be shut off but I asked Sen7inel what he thinks. Maybe I can test it out later. Best case scenario, we're going to be stuck with the CPU fan on at idle, indefinitely. Unless someone wants to experiment with flashing the older 870M EC fan profile(which I don't think anyone should do unless they have more experience with it)

Perhaps the gpu temp is showing only for the Nvidia, and when you arent using it, it is using integrated graphics, and therefore the gpu temp wont be read because its displayed in the cpu temp? If you only have ff, spotify and downloading games, i cant imagine nvidia being used for that. What colour is your power button? My gs70 2qe is virtually silent during that kind of use.

    Sometimes red and sometimes white.
When i made the screenshot it was white i think
That maybe is because it used ths iGPU.
What about color correction of the monitor? Where can i set that up since the colors are quite cold.
And is it worth to install another fan profile, if yes how?

    • Hit Function+F3, or
    • In Control Panel->Mouse Properties, in the ELAN tab you can check "Disable when external USB pointing device plug in". Or
    • Crazy option: Control Panel->System->Device Manager, open "Mice and pointing devices", right click the ELAN Smart Pad, select Uninstall. You may want to right click it again and select disable.

Maybe your hdd is a bit loose, causing it to touch the case, making some noises while it's spinning. Might want to open the laptop and see if you can tighten the screws (if there are any)?

It's usable but very frustrating. There are a couple of problems with it:
    • It has no dedicated buttons. You use the lower part of the trackpad but when you click you also move the cursor.
    • I usually hang with my index finger on my left hand above or on the click part of the pad. When moving the cursor with the other hand it can be interpreted as a double finger zoom or just jump the cursor somewhere else.
    • It's too sensitive. Very small changes will fling the cursor. Small precise movements such as positioning the cursor at the right letter in a word are difficult.

Just want to mention something about the noise level also. I do not find it loud or annoying at all. Sure, I would prefer it to be completely silent when idle but the whisper emitted does not bother me much. I'm actually impressed by that it's not louder when gaming. The sound from the game drounds out the fan noise completely. It should be said the I keep the laptop to the left in front of me, using an external screen as my main screen.

You could always ask MSI if you can open it up to investigate and still keep your warranty. Odds are they will be ok with it and you'll have a helpdesk ticket to back you up. I've read in multiple places they still honor their warranty even with that sticker broken, as long as you aren't modifying the hardware.

I bought that notebook from a reseller in germany and if i wanted to return it for them to repair it it would take a long time.
Do you think i could also return it to any other msi reseller in my area?
My mom said it would be possible.

    One stupid question:
How do I maximize battery life on a non-removable battery laptop.... i.e. the GS60 ?
It might sound stupid but I took out the battery when connected to the power supply and used it directly on outlet power. My laptop has a 3 year old battery which still functions with about an hour of heavy use (battery capacity has reduced to 50% now :( ), but is still usable.

No clue about repairs in different countries. You could try asking msi if they'll rma the hdd by itself.
