I would ask for repasting if it was possible in PLits only like 15-30 bucks and always lowers the temps for 10-15 degrees in gs60/70 models so you would get even better upgrade in terms of temps - maybe even good enough to play with laptop on ur knees? Such feature would be worth of spending those few extra bucks

Are you able to order IC diamond and do it yourself? If not, then you will have to find someone experienced with MSI notebooks, otherwise it still can be messed up by a computer technician because he may be unfamiliar with MSI. -
I wouldnt take the risk in 2k $ laptop, thats for sure.
Also i asked the biggest polish reseller komputronik.pl and even they said that gs60 build is too complicated in their opinion (reversed mobo, no easy access) and they dont want to do this as well. Guess i gona have to leave without it and hope that maxwell 970m will be cool enough by itself
-
I would never go to V15 Nitro ... Why?? Because it's simply Acer...
Why did I choose MSI? You can repaste it, you can upgrade RAM, HDD, SSD and what i've heard from friends and seen at this forum, RMA is simply amazing. My friend's GS60 had damaged "space button" and he got completly new GS60 LoL ...
Ehm and I don't think the new model is louder, it's at the same levels as before... -
Any idea where I can buy just the motherboard with 6Gb 870m?
-
Laptops with such a thin profile like the GS60 definitely need some extra tweaking to keep the temps lower, although the 970m won't be as bad as the previous 870m but the IC diamond option would still have managed to drop 3-4 C from the current temps, and you know the lower the temps the better it is. and considering the fact that GS60 is a pain in the as to disassemble, I think you should have gone for ICD while ordering it. Future repaste might be a bit difficult but definitely possible. So no crying over spilt milk..... Enjoy your new notebook and don't forget to update us here.

Posted this in the GS60 thread. Here are some benchmarks on the 970M version:
3dMark: FS-6541, SD-17907, CG-19752, IS-101710 CPU-86C max, GPU-85C max
PCMark 8: 3501 CPU 80C max
I also played Skyrim @ 3k on Ultra and capped at 60fps(No AA or AF). The GPU clock was over 1000Mhz and didn't throttle at all. I also was getting 40-60 fps with crysis 3 at 3k resolution on medium settings. At the same settings with 1920x1080 I capped at 60fps. -
What's the max temp of GPU and CPU while playing?
-
Highest gpu temp I have recorded is 82C. CPU 76C
-
To comment on the fan noise, it's the sane as the previous model. The only thing I notice is it doesn't hit the top speed quite as often. If you wear headphones, you'll never know, but even without them, the internal speakers are plenty loud enough to overpower the fan noise

What are temperatures of chassis outside? Does it get scorchingly hot to touch anywhere when benchmarking / gaming?
E.g. old 3K GTX 870M version was hottest at bottom mid back (78 C) and front left back (50 C):
MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K Edition (2PEWi716SR21) Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews -
I don't have a thermal scanner so I can't give you any numbers. I can say it's much more tolerable than the old version(I have both atm). I did a 2 hour dota session with maxed out settings at 3k on my lap. Internal GPU temp got to 78°C and I experienced a solid 60fps. It wasn't cool by any means but it wasn't burning me either. It's a welcome improvement, although I think I'll still use a cooling pad when feasible. I think more demanding games might not be lap worthy. With the old GS60, my legs would sweat after 10 minutes. FYI, the new versions of the GS60 have felt pads on the bottom on the hot spots so that helps too. I know the later 870M models had this too but the early models were bare metal and it was painful to touch.
-
Edit: oops wrong thread
-
Thank you, that sounds promising.
So thermally-wise new GS60 with GTX 970M seems quite similar to Clevo P650SE with GTX 970M - compared to old thin designs with GTX 870M they are still loud under heavier loads but at least now temperatures are more under control, and we've got 50-60% better performance. Not bad
.
Edit: I have to take back my approval of Clevo P650 - finally according to NotebookCheck review it seems really hot, as bad as old MSI GS60 with Kepler
So please pretty please, new MSI GS60, be better, I'm starting to run out of choices (Gigabyte P34W v3 and P35W v3 have very high chance of being too hot too). -

nice, GL and let us know how that goes. really tempted to order from Amazon since they have a great return policy. But not sure if its worth it due to tax and not being able to get IC Diamond installed since I'm not sure if I can trust myself in doing it.

Today MSI in coop with biggest Polish resseler hosts some gaming event - i already asked them if I can expect them to have their new toys with them in some special price offers and they said "yesss
))" - keep your fingerz crossed, im leaving in 1hour and hopefully will be back with gs60 2QE
-
Love the new video card - that seemed to be the biggest problem with the previous model.
I just wish it was easier to get rid of that obnoxious logo they slapped on the lid. Everything else about it is sleek and minimal. -
Big fat dissapointment.. They didnt have a single 970/980 laptops with them (despite the promises on FB), all they offered were keplers in standard prices, pathetic :/
-
Any of you guys knows when the 3k variant with 6gb of VRAM will launch ? I emailed xotic and they said they don't expect any stock of this model anytime soon and MSI seems to ignore my emails about it. Im really close to pulling the trigger on the 3gb version if I can't find any with 6gigs soon enough
-
Dang it I was hoping to hear a review from you and your thoughts of it.

Had mine a couple days now and I'm super happy with it so far. Temps compared to the 870m are much more tolerable and the performance boost is pretty amazing. There's no doubt I'll be keeping this and returning the older version. What put it over the top was the amount of games I'm able to play at 3k.
-
Can you provide the temp numbers and which 970m version you have: 3 or 6gb?
I'm still trying to decide between the gs60 or 70 with 6gb or Gigabyte P35w or P35x. I like GB since its easy to do upgrades and the 980m option and I like MSI due to its weight.
Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk -
Is there any word if the GS60 will get the GTX 980M?
-
it won't get the GTX 980m because the TDP is too high and the laptop won't be able to cool it properly. -
Have any of you considered this: Fangbook Edge ? It seems to have a lower starting price with the addition of the 4870HQ too...
-
I think there will be one since the P35x v3 is able to accommodate an 980M on a similar chassis.
-
I have the 3gb version. I don't think the 6gb version is out yet. Temps are about 10C less than the 870M and 25 percent performance increase across the board. I haven't gone above 84C yet. I've been pushing it at 3k though, so FHD results will be better. I'll get you some actual temps with specific games later
-
I've considered it just like I've considered OriginPC for Gigabyte but it came down to not having a big ownership like MSI or GB if I were to run into issues. At least here there are lots of people with the same model you can ask when issues arises. With that said, hard to get user reviews when hardly anyone or none has them on this forum board.
IMHO, I would only consider P35x similar to P35w since its the same chassis and can't compare to the GS60.
Gigabyte built theirs with easy access to upgrading parts compared to the GS series.

Can you check if its possible to play with gs60 3k on ur laps? Im not saying something as demanding ad crisis4/bf4 but for instance d3 (if u have it
- i mostly play in the late evening, sitting on the couch with laptop on my knees, such feedback would be very important to me
-
Doubt you can dit on The couch but running d3 is done with ease.
-
You know coz you have one & checked it or its just an educated guess?
-
I'm personally waiting to see the reviews on this one. I'm a little skeptical about it though. If it's so easy, why hasn't anyone else done it yet?
Couple of options:
- Borrowed the Aorus X7 Pro cooling system with the extra heat pipe
- Fans ramp up to insane speeds and volume
- Throttles something crazy
- Black magic
P35X would totally be my goto laptop too even all these considered, just heard bad things about the build. -
Not from experience but I've seen benchmarks on temperatures and the bottom gets 70C which just will kill your legs using it when gaming. Browsing and doing low end stuff will de doable but playing d3 is out of the question unless your legs are paralyzed
-
I'm really considering the gs60 as first choice for laptop. I just need the 6gb vram version as I need it for work. If someone finds it in Europe (with the azerty keyboard option) could he point us the link here?
I can't seem to find any 6gb version except in the Us. I'm even willing to buy and pay import taxes but can't seem to find an Us-reseller with the AZERTY keyboard option. -

Thanks, but your link is to a 3gb one, not a 6gb one.
Do you have any experience with this shop? Is it a good service, reliable? -
Got it
installing drivers atm, i will give you update/feedback later

Yes it's 3gb , no sorry but I heard that it was a good site

Yep, the fangbook edge looks perfect but I need an AZERTY-keyboard (French). Do you have any idea if I can order the keyboard separately and change it myself?

New info from Overclockers UK staff about availability of higher VRAM models:
Overclockers UK Forums -
The reference of the French model is MSI GS60 2QE-040XFR , But there are only 3 vram for now.

Not just that laptop does not have azerty and 6GB but it also have Czech characters at the keyboard ...
Anyways I do not know anything about how their services work outside the country but because I am Slovak, they do not have good support when you are about to claim or RMA it. My own experiencies with them, despite that they are a good e-shop. -
Well, its... AMAZING
I decided that cant w8 any longer. Bought GS60 2QE-024XPL (i4710, 16 gb, 970m 3gb, 3K display, ssd+hdd).
Screen is great, win boots in 7s, everything works smooth and really fast.
Atm i have only checked D3, max details, native QHD - 60 fps all the time - time to have some fun
-
Yup, we already knew about MSI GS60 GTX 970M 6 GB VRAM models in US.
That Overclockers UK post was the first info about a 6 GB VRAM model in Europe (at least as far as I'm aware).
Thanks for the reminder though, just now I noticed that even this 4K model from Xotic PC is not available yet:
There is also 1080p 6 GB VRAM version from Xotic PC, also not yet available:
XOTIC PC | MSI GS60 Ghost Pro-064
Also this 1080p 6 GB VRAM one at US Amazon, but it's " Temporarily out of stock" (before was est. October 18), and had price bumped up by $100 ($1,899 => $1,999):

Seems like everybody underestimated demand for 6 GB VRAM versions and/or Nvidia has supply troubles
.
I remember with GTX 860M Maxwells, also at first it was just 2 GB VRAM models everywhere, it took a while till 4 GB VRAM models started to appear. -
The FHD panel is probably a PLS panel like the 870M predecessor. Same as IPS pretty much.
-
I dont have too many games but:
After 1h of gameplay in d3, native, maxed - GPU 58', CPU 62'
After 1h of gameplay in bf3, native, ultra, all maxed - GPU 63', CPU 66'
Backside of gs60 can hardly be called "cold" but its not hot at all, although after 15 it becomes a bit unconfortable for laps - fortunately cheap cooling pad eliminates the problem

I have always thought of Acer and MSI laptops both having terrible build quality, temperatures and noise. Acer and MSI are what I consider to be bad brands.
Of course, times have changed. Asus and Alienware used to make the most successful gaming laptops, but as of late their offerings are repetitive and inferior.
The good thing about Acer is they stay true to their cheap roots. The Acer Nitro with 860M only costs $1100, while the MSI GS60 with 860M costs $1450 here in the United States. The upgrade to the 970M raises the GS60 price to $1800. I think Acer could do the same upgrade for their laptop for the same increase in price. The temperatures and noise on the Nitro with 860M are much better than the GS60 with the 860M. So, I have to assume the upgraded Nitro would overall be superior to the GS60 for about $350 less.
MSI was clever enough to release their laptop with the 970M first. That's the only reason why I might consider the GS60 over the Nitro. I'm hoping the competition drives the 860M Nitro price down to $900 during Black Friday.
For everyone considering the Fangbook, you guys are looking too hard at specifications and too little at the horrible quality of the laptop. High temperatures, loud fans, cheap plastic, cheap touchpad, cheap keyboard, and the sub-par display aren't listed in the specifications, but they are going to add up to a rather unenjoyable experience. There's a reason why companies like MSI, Acer, Asus, and Alienware are still in the business of designing a good gaming laptop. Give respect to the engineering that makes a barebone notebook usable.
