I have the same problem on Win 8.1. Had it right from the start.

I had a poke around the registry, and if there's anyone who DOES NOT have this recurring tutorial problem with the Sound Blaster Cinema 2 software, could you have a look in your registry (RUN -> regedit.exe) under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Creative Tech\Sound Blaster Cinema 2" and let us know if there are any keys in there that refer to the tutorial or some kind of 'init' etc?

Also, might be worth checking in "%appdata%\Local\Creative\Sound Blaster Cinema 2" for any config files (you can paste that directly into your File Explorer). I only have the "profile\custom.xml" with my custom profile settings.

Yeah, unfortunately that's all I could turn up too. Really looks like we're kinda hooped on this one. My partner also as a GS60 with the same thing, so it's probably an (annoying) software flaw.

I wonder if there's any other sound processing program we can use other than the Sound Blaster, as it's really essential to turn the terrible speakers to something usable. My old Lenovo Y500 had the Dolby processor, perhaps that may work, if they don't lock it all out.

Something to experiment with when I get home.

On a side note, I have a 170w adapter from my Y500 that the thieves left behind when we were robbed and I'm wondering if it will be okay to use with this GS60? The GS60 is 19.5v 7.7a and the Lenovo one is 20v and 8.5a. I'm already using the 120w 19.5v 6.15a Lenovo adapter as a spare just fine (obviously not heavy use), but I'm concerned about the slightly higher amperage on the larger one.

They have moved to their new nahimic sound software partner, you could try that.

It's not the amperage you need to worry about, it's the voltage. The amperage is variable and is drawn by the laptop upon demand. As long as the voltages match, the battery will charge at its designed amperage. Most power supplies/batteries support tolerances of ±.5% so you should be ok to use it.

I've just tried the Nahimic and it won't seem to install due to whatever arbitrary restrictions are put on my 870m GS60 3k by MSI. (I know this is the 970m thread, don't tell!).

Good to know RE: voltage/amperage, thank you. I figured it would likely be okay, but also with a new expensive machine it's not something to risk without better knowledge.

I ran into some trouble upgrading the storage. I replaced the HDD with an SSD, but in doing so now have two issues:

    1. The Burn Recovery program that comes with the ghost pro says that I do not have a recovery partition. Does this mean that the recovery partition was on the hdd and not the ssd? Anyway to get it back if this is the case?

    2. I tore the threads in the two screw holes at the bottom top of the case (the short ones not the 4 long ones). Now the screws won't tighten at all - they just turn and fall out. While this is my fault, I'm surprised by how delicate the threads are. Any solutions for this? Should I try to get 2 long screws and see if there is an unbroken part of the thread they might latch on to?

    1. You have to copy over the partition from the spinning hard drive. I used Macrium reflect for mine. They put it on that drive to save space on the M.2 drive.

    2. You're probably out of luck on those threads. Try taking the cover off and seeing if the threads really are stripped. Sometimes they use threaded components on the casing that come loose if you torque them too much. You'll also be able to insert the screws deeper with the cover off, to try your theory. Worst case, you can leave them off or put some epoxy in the hole that can harden so you can screw into it.

It will depend on what machines they have licensed the software, they would have no choice not to support the earlier ones.

SO YOU KNOW, omg, I just noticed a very faint tick box marked 'Do Not Show Again' (or whatever) on the upper right corner of the last tutorial screen of Sound Blaster Cinema. Yeah, so I guess you can tick that. Never noticed it earlier, cuz who reads the tutorials, amirite?

This model started rolling out late June, early July.

I suspect the Skylake ver, will be around September or so. I hope at least.

Hi everyone, new member here. I was doing a bit of reading regarding the GS60 Pro's 4k screen and I found out (a tad bit too late) mine has the yellow mustard problem that can't be fixed with calibration. (similar to the Y50, as far as I've read)

Not sure if I missed this info - but I'd like to know if there is any way I can salvage my unit by buying and replacing my current screen with a panel that does not have the yellow mustard issue? And if so, where would I be able to purchase this replacement? I also noticed Xotic and other resellers are selling the LG? 4k screen (glossy), really curious to know if this one doesn't have the yellow problem I'm currently having...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's up with the mini display port?
Some reviews say that you can't use it for external monitors. Does it mean that you can buy an external harddrive and use Thunderbolt?

    Hi guys

What's the 970m like for gaming (not the 3k or 4k laptop version)? Looking at games such as Battlefield 4 & Company of Heroes 2.
What level of settings can you use? Ultra or just high?

Also do you get the same frame rate if connected to an external monitor?

There shouldn't be any issue with using the mini display port for a monitor. MSI even puts it in the model overview/info on that model to run multiple monitors at once, which would need that:

"Do everything, all at once with MSI´s Matrix Display technology, supporting multiple external displays so you can multi-task like a pro via HDMI and mini-Display Ports. Stream on Twitch or watch your favorite shows while playing your games, whatever it is you do, you´ll never miss another moment."

I'm curious to see what sites also said it won't work for monitors.

The 970m can run games pretty well on high, if not ultra high settings, depending on the game. This should give you an idea of how it handles different games by settings:

mDP can be used for external monitors, but not external hard drive because it's not a Thunderbolt.

For the games you've asked, you can do Ultra on 2K, High on 4K.

I just ordered the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro-606 from Bestbuy I recently moved so used a 10% off coupon so after that + taxes looking at just under $1600. I am looking forward to a gaming laptop haven't had one since a Gateway with a Duo core and 8800gtm.

I mainly bought it so I can use my PC or the Laptop when I have my kids over as my oldest is into PC gaming and kicks me off my pc. So he can use whichever I am not using.

Anything I should lookout for? Anyone on here have one with the Broadwell? I am not expecting much difference between it and the Haswell reviews I have read but figured with the 10% why not get the latest.

Congrats on your new purchase. The difference is there but it's not dramatic enough for you to feel any difference. If it's just one generation newer, usually the improvement won't be as much thus if you skip onto the next generation then you may expect more for the same price.

I put a review of the 4k Broadwell model here: http://www.ultrabookreview.com/7942-msi-gs60-ghost-pro-4k-review/

In the benchmarks section, you can see all the testing I did at different hardware configs and a comparison with the Haswell version. My review of the Haswell version is also linked in that article. I'm curious if your battery life would be better with the FHD Broadwell. I was surprised to see it was worse than my Haswell model and I can only account for it with the screen.

Nice review mine is expected to arrive mid next week. Is the program you used for the estimated battery time free? I would be willing to mirror those tests and maybe a 720p video run down. I am hoping with the broadwell and 1080p screen it should beat the Haswell versions even if only slightly. I looked around for a haswell with 16 gb ram along with 970m and locating them at a better deal then $1590 out the door with best buy wasn't possible. The 1590 is even less when I factor in AMEX had a spend 250+ at best buy get $25 in statement credit + 1% from ebates +1% from Amex Cash Back and Best buy rewards bucks of around $30. If I value everything the same as cash it was basically $1500 not to mention I have around 8 month 0% interest left on the Amex. My only wish is it would arrive sooner.

I almost went with the Apache but I think the GS60 had a better screen.

Hey guys, I was fortunate enough to get one of these laptops through work. It seems they removed all the software that the laptop originally came with, and put windows 7 on it. A couple questions:

    - There is an nvidia gpu on here, as well as Intel HD graphics.. so I assume I'm supposed to be able to switch between the two to save battery. However I haven't found a way to determine which gpu is actually in use, or any way to manually switch. Is there some relevant driver or software I might be missing? The battery life is pretty bad- about 2.5 hours surfing the internet.

    - The touchpad feels terrible. Might I be missing the right drivers? There's no momentum in the cursor, and it generally feels unresponsive. Also taps to click are often not registered.

    - Any other important drivers or software I should install? Is there maybe a guide for people who installed windows 7?

    Thanks!

I just updated the BIOS on my GS60 2QE Ghost Pro-064US 970M and I noticed a bit of decrease in startup times. It used to be the Cinema 2 software logo would show almost immediately, but now takes about 30 secs before it appears. Also the wifi icon used to show a connection upon start up, but now it doesn't show until 30-40 secs after startup. The icon is x'ed out as if I don't have a connection, even though I am still able to surf the internet. I did not have these issues before flashing the new BIOS. I know these aren't significant issues, but it would be nice to get those faster boot times back. Any suggestions? What can I disable during startup and not lose functionality?

Check the color on the power LED, if it's blue then it's Intel HD Graphics, but if it's orange then it's Nvidia GPU. The system shifts between the two depending on what types of application you are running and make adjustment automatically.

Apparently the first time you must update your existing install, in my case 8.1 --> 10, which then "upgrades" your existing key to support Windows 10... then you can do a fresh install afterwards if you'd like in the future no problem.

For install media go here for those interested:

And, as a quick follow up, upgrade completed without issues, Windows 10 is up and running, so far so good. Only drivers in device manager that will require attention are an older HP printer and a Logitech gamepad. Seems all the GS60 drivers work fine.

I am still awaiting my laptop it is still processing from Best Buy they are testing my patience. It is supposed to arrive tomorrow but if it doesn't ship today that won't happen...

How do you like windows 10 so far? I plan to do this as the first change I make is upgrade. Guessing you need to get all the MSI tools for keyboard etc afterwards on a fresh install?

Upgraded to Windows 10 and been getting a flickering black line on the top left corner of my screen. Connected to an external monitor and its coming up there as well, so I believed it was a driver issue. Upgraded to the latest Intel driver (for Windows 10), but still having the same problem. Can't remove and downgrade to older driver since they don't support 10. Is this something I just need to wait for Intel or MSI to release a more stable driver? I have a Broadwell HD5600 by the way. Thanks.

If you had Raid 0 SSD's, they would be rapidly eating their own hard drive space every time you used them. Win 7 is the ONLY OS Intel has invested in rectifying for this adverse action to the latest and greatest technologies. Intel does not do things off the cuff.

Windows will not even say anything about Win10. I don't think Intel is going to invest in "vapor" startup OS's (win 10.)

It's likely, since SBC2 was released a while ago and was intended for Win7/8.x but it is not Win10 certified.
Also, since MSI has dropped support for SBC2 and went for Nahimic so it is expected to see new release for Win10.

Yup, I agree that it is the driver issue.
The driver is still buggy, and it's also possible that the BIOS needs to be updated to support Win10 properly because it contains VBIOS.

It's gonna be the same hardware except the OS image and BIOS are updated to provide out of box experience for Win10.

The connector is compatible with Toshiba, you should be able to find a replacement easily.

Two-Fingered scrolling works fine on mine under Windows 10, and movement/sensitivity feels like it did in 8.

    Are any touchpad drivers installed?

So far so good on 10 for me, my only problem is now after I did a clean reinstall after my initial update, Windows 10 won't activate so I'm stuck with limited setting options and a watermark in the bottom right of screen.

Try installing the touchpad driver again and see if it starts to work or not.

    Hello~
Been lurking for a while, and it was brought to my attention that Windows 10 was a bit buggy with the drivers and BIOS of the GS60. Any idea of when the new model will be rolling out, and will it be available at GentechPC? That's where I was planning to order from and I would like to have a smooth experience with the OS.

If you want a smooth startup within the next few years, I'd go with Win 7 Professional OS. I'm not an expert, but Win 10 OS does not seem to have essential support at the moment. If you thought it did, you may be in a minority at this time.

Good luck, and I think you need to visit the Win 10 OS software threads for a relevant report card on how Win 10 startup is coming: that is your main bottleneck, not MSI or GenTech. I would wait until Msft stock and therefore the whole market crashes before any meaningful progress is made on Win10, imo. It's your time and money though, do as you please: good first post, lol.

There will be machines that are preloaded with Win10, but as far as software goes, we also rely on MSI to provide us with those. Of course, we will be more than happy to provide those to our customers as soon as we get them from MSI.

Alrighty, I guess I'll have to just wait and see. Thank you for the help! I'll still keep my options open as to what laptop I should invest in ,however. Still looking for the best option that fits me.

Not an owner just yet, but I literally just ordered an MSI GS60 with 970m and broadwell update! So excited as my sager will finally become the server/desktop i wanted it to be! Specs on the MSI are:

    Intel® Broadwell™ i7-5700HQ
    NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 970M
    16GB DDR3 1600MHz
    250GB Samsung 850 EVO
    1TB 7200RPM HDD

IC diamond treatment (save me the PITA of repasting a thin and light)
    Rush order

Excited as hell to have something more mobile, dont get me wrong the Sager is amazing still and will be for years but now it will better serve as a desktop/server where it belongs. Even more excited to see what broadwell and maxwell will do compared to my haswell and kepler. Apparently Im going to see a good jump in performance and drop in heat!

I ended up ordering a used GS60 Ghost Pro 064 with a second 128gb ssd added to run in Raid. I am hoping it is as good as it looks. This way I save a bit more money and it is still warrantied until December 2016.
