All's running smoothly on mine, no issues or complaints running Windows 10. Not sure who told you there BIOS or driver issues, but that's not the case.

Machine is as fast or faster running 10 compared to 8.1. For a free simple upgrade hard to beat!

Yeah that's good, start out with reasonable cost then upgrade later when financial situation permits.

How do you guys copy your recovery partition when installing a new SSD?

I took out the 1TB HDD and replaced it with a 1TB SSD. Then plugged the HDD into a USB port using a SATA-USB adapter. When I use EaseUS to clone the HDD to the SSD I get this error:

"linux emergency disk cannot support Dynamic disk/GPT"

    Any ideas?

Sounds like the program you are using doesn't support GPT partitions. Use Macrium reflect or something similar.

I just tried Macrium and get a similar error:

"The following drive is in use and the restore cannot continue"

Never got that error before. Are you using it in Windows 8/10? If so, you should really make a bootable usb and run Macrium inside it. Just put Windows PE on it. There are plenty of guides out there on how to make one.

It should also work with recovery discs since it recreates recovery partition.

So I bought myself a pre-owned gs60 064 (haswell 6gb variant), had some EC issues but that was easy enough to resolve. I love it, been slowly updating it to latest software and drivers. Then I realized that my top left corner was having backlight bleed. Not too noticeable when the screen has color. But it keeps catching my eye and now I'm beginning to think that it the entire left side has a very slight backlight bleed, but I didn't notice until I started looking for it. I sent a ticket to msi to see what they suggest, but I'd like the opinion of professional owners. What do you guys think?

(the bleed is most noticeable in the top left corner, hard to see unless it's black, the entire left side bleed is so light that you need to stare at the right side and then look at the left to notice it)

I'd venture to guess that 80-90 percent of us have backlight bleed. I seriously doubt they will rma it for you and if they do, it probably won't get fixed. The way these panels are fixated to the bezel pretty much causes the bleed.

Learned the GS60 I bought came from Gentech originally. Can a receipt copy be pulled if I provide the Serial Number? I get it tomorrow so excited. Do you think ~$1400 shipped on a GS60-064 with a second 128gb M.2 Sata drive installed, usb blu ray drive, MSI mousepad, MSI Steel Series headphones and Mouse all packaging etc is a good deal?

It's a bit late to be checking the quality of the deal after you have paid ;)

The closest current comparison would be the GS60 606 so you can compare to that price new vs old.

Hmm, I have only used the mic with Cortona, but she could hear me just fine... did the learn my voice prompts after setting up the mic without issue.

I haven't tried it with a Skype call or anything yet though.

If you are upgrading to windows 10 right now I would suggest you only do so if you are happy playing with different driver versions and making edits to the system regarding updates etc. If not I would wait a few months before moving over.

Have you looked at webcam drivers and all the sound settings?

Yes, I upgraded to the latest drivers after installing Windows 10. I didn't test whether it worked in Windows 8.1.
Cortana does pick up the sound and understand it somewhat, but if you actually try to record you will hear that the volume is really low. Someone on Skype would really have a hard time for instance.

Have you updated BIOS/EC to the latest version?
Additionally, audio driver should be updated to Win10 compatible version as well. Also, the recording level should be increased to 100%, with 20 dB if applicable.

Clonezilla may be confusing for some users.
Some instructions can help them. :)

Yikes! Did you have them do any upgrades? Maybe an added SSD? If so, and if you're comfortable, open it up and see if the fan is disconnected. It might have been unplugged to get to the RAM or SSDs. If the warranty sticker is still intact or if you aren't comfortable opening it up, you need to return it to them for an exchange. There's no setting that will completely turn the fan off unless somebody meddled with the EC profile in a twisted way. You can rule that out by downloading this https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=256233.0

Just put the connector in the empty slot. It's just like a fan on a desktop pc.

See this video at this time. The fan is the white connector he disconnects first.

alright, so the one fan that doesnt work connector is not in, but i couldn't find the connector, the usb-like thing is probably somewhere inside of the notebook, the wires go deeper into it...

Yes, it's probably tucked under it, if you remove the screws to the fan, you should be able to pry it up enough to pull it out. Take a close up picture and I can walk you through it

You need to install 8.1 fresh, get it to activate and then upgrade to 10 to get it activated officially.

Hi, my old desktop finally bit the dust and I have been looking around for a replacement. It was mostly used for general computer tasks while connected to my TV. I have decided to replace it and think it makes sense to replace it with a laptop. I would like the occasional portability. My gaming lately has been limited to an Xbox One, but I would like the option to run PC games. I have narrowed it down to the ROG 751 and the MSI GS60. I really like the GS60 (I can't imagine using the ROG to watch a movie on an air plane), but I'm concerned about the cooling intake being located on the top. My question is, has anyone checked temps with the top closed for general browsing, netflix, etc. I don't mind opening the laptop when gaming, but most of the time I would like it closed on a shelf in my media center.

PS - I note that Gentech (and other sellers) occasionally post here and I would like to thank them for the genuinely informative and useful reviews posted on Youtube. They are a refreshing change from the normal "Unboxing the XXX" reviews. You guys are doing a great job and for me it definitely gives you an edge over buying from the "big box" guys.

So far loving it and am happy I have the 256gb SSD over the 128gb. I think I got a good deal saw his receipt of nearly 2100 compared to the 1400 I paid. Is there a way to make the screen sharper in games? It doesn't look bad and is running at 1080p fine just looks soft compared to nice and sharp.

Download (or look for) MSI True Color to adjust how the screen looks, lots of different settings to play with, as well as a "Gaming" screen setting

I know the laptop gets very warm with the lid closed and GPU (had an issue where it was trying to update while lid was closed). I think keeping it completely closed during light usage could work do to MSIs "Silent Fan" option, which allows you limit the fan top speed (this means that there must be some heat transfer without needing fans at predefined speed). With the CPU undervolted and GPU off, it does seem possible. I'll test later

When the lid is closed, the heat can be trapped under therefore it's important to leave the lid opened so the heat does not bother us no more.

Update the driver first, and update the firmware of router.
If problem persists, let us know and we can try tweaking the router settings.

So I am unable to get the Nahimic app to work. I try to install it and get an error saying my device is out of date or something along those lines and it aborts. I downloaded the drivers and app direct from MSI for the haswell gs60 with no luck. I try using the old sound blaster cinema and it says no supported devices detected. Sound works fine otherwise just neither app will install in the case of Nahimic or actually detects anything in the case of Sound Blaster any advice?

I have recently purchased this laptop. Very good impression, but I'm not entirely satisfied with the fan noises for as simple as browsing the web. Even after I installed Silent Option, there is a frequent burst of fans. Even with browsers than Chrome. Any advice on how to improve this?

    EDIT:
After I lowered the third bar in Silent Option to half of it was, the fan becomes more tolerable. I guess browsing with cpu usage ranged from 1% to 10% raises the temperature that triggers the fans from the third bar.

So far I have the first two bars for both cpu and gpu fan set to 0 and third bar set to 50% of what it was, the rest remains the same. I expect to only use the fans when gaming. Is this a valid configuration or will it be harmful to my system?

    EDIT 2:
Just switched from sport mode [default] to green mode to test it out.

    EDIT 3:
I think switching from the default sport mode to green mode and I think it vastly improved. Will post again if I have any issues. More suggestions are welcomed.

Hi, I got an GS60 ( i7-4720HQ, Nvidia 970M and FHD screen model) for about a month now. I love the machine but there are two things that worry me:

    - Battery life, I read reviews where they already mentioned that battery life was poor. But, I'm concerned mine may be faulty. I barely get 2.5 hours just surfing the net with Wifi (everthing else off and brightness at 20-30%). Is this normal or should I contact MSI for a replacement?

    - The touchpad sometimes misbehaves badly. It doesn't register movements and sometimes skips taps. It's not always but when it happens it drives me crazy. Any ideas on this? Is this common?

    Thanks!

Battery life is normal from what I have read and experienced. 2.5-3 hours tops just doing basic stuff like an hour or less if gaming.
