Hey, I have the first GS60 model with the 870m and one 128GB ssd and 1TB hard drive. The first time I open up the file explorer after turning on my computer to anywhere on my hard drive it takes an extra second to load (kind of a stutter when I click my downloads folder for example). Does this have anything to do with the fact that my hard drive isn´t "warmed up" when I first launch my computer or is it perhaps defect? Wanted to know since my warranty is ending soon.
Also, if I do a factory reset, will my system revert back to Windows 8.1 (the OS it had when I bought it) or will it be Windows 10? If it reverts back to 8.1, is there any way to do a complete restart without reverting?

How many GB available out of 128GB? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
So if you want to go back to Win8.1 then you will need to use recovery discs. -

@JacobEkwall When you load up file explorer it has to read information from your HDD which is kept powered down during boot since it is not required. The second delay is the drive spinning up.
-
I would suggest check the advanced power settings under power management to see if the drive is set to sleep.
If you think your drive is defective you can download and test it with Seagate Seatool here:
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/
Just run the long generic test to see if it found any errors. -

All drives will spin down until called if the software is set for that, this is going back to the days of the vista launch where I had enough ram to hear my primary raid set spin down as all my data was cached.
You may be getting confused with variable rotation rates while in operation.
It's an interesting bit of tech but not really relevant to this behavior. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Change it to 0 and see if it helps.

So I haven't had a ton of time to use the GS60 but I noticed one of the black screws in the bottom is missing not sure if by previous owner or Gentech when they replaced SSD with a 256gb SSD. Any idea where to order such a screw it just bothers me know it's missing and visible.
Thanks,
Sam -

Ram upgrade and PCI-e SSD support are the biggest perks. -
Thanks for all the answers! So it probably isn´t defective, I´ll run the test to see if anything comes up. SSD is almost full, 17,6 GB available, does that impact the performance of the HDD?

So how do you revert back to Windows 8.1 when it says backup files can't be found?
I have had stability issues with the GS60 on both Windows 8.1 and 10. It's weird sometimes perfect other times it'll crash reboot you start playing crashes reboots then works fine for hours and hours. I tried a fresh install of 8.1 reset the version of 8.1 and windows 10. Have all the drivers I could find but have random crashes for Memory as well as a couple others doesn't seem to be game or program specific sometimes even simple things like web browsing will do it.
I'm fairly computer saavy built my desktop haven't had it crash once in the nearly 2 years i've built it it's running Windows 8.1.
I will take pictures for the exact messages the next times it happens. -
Well not sure if a windows 10 update came out or something but I have been stable since thursday night even if I reboot after installing I haven't had a crash. So fingers crossed things are resolved. It has been running like a dream,

I was just about to buy the 5th gen GS60..,...Will the US region be getting this skylake version anytime soon?

I have the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro with GTX 970m with 5th Generation Broadwell processor.
I just got this laptop (warranty replacement for another MSI GS60 Ghost Pro GTX 970m with 4th Generation processor) about a month ago.
I have never tried the bluetooth until today, but it is not working at all. I uninstalled the Qualcomm Atheros Drivers 3012 and reinstalled them and bluetooth is not working. There's no error message and the drivers are showing up stating they are working properly. My computer cannot see other devices, nor can other devices see my computer.
Any suggestions?Last edited: Sep 8, 2015 -
I have this issue too. I'm currently installing the Killer networking drivers that people on other sites suggested. I'm first going to try the win10 one, then the win8 one. http://www.killernetworking.com/support/driver-downloads/category/bluetooth-driverslostnspace likes this. -
I will try the drivers and report back success or failure. -
The Good: My laptop is now discoverable and I can connect with bluetooth devices.
The Bad: There is not an option to send a file from my computer via bluetooth. Also when I connected to a bluetooth speaker and then to a bluetooth headset, the audio from my laptop, still came through the the internal speakers. Which is weird because my laptop is showing that it's connected to the bluetooth devices. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Check your default audio device.
-
I finally got things working after a system restore.
For some odd reason my computer would not "forget" Bluetooth devices it has paired to previously. Even after I removed the drivers, and/or devices, after restarting my laptop, the devices would reappear.
Needless to stay the drivers provided in the link work, but I seems to be missing a few option, like being able to tell my computer where to save Bluetooth files. I think I may have to play around with the registry to work that out.
I have become accustomed to how Bluetooth works on mobile devices and Windows is not nearly as user friendly.
Thanks for the help and suggestions! -
Hello,
I just bought the new GS60 with 970M.
It is usefull to change the thermal paste? I was thinking to put Kryonaut from Thermal Grizzly or are they some better stuff?
Also is it usefull to undervolt the CPU and GPU like it was with the 870M generation?
Thank you in advance for your answer. -
I wrote a comparison article with the P35X if anyone is interested.

I got my laptop today and I have to say I'm really impressed and so far happy I made the choice! It's super light, yet still feels powerful. I haven't actually tested any games out on it yet because I was tinkering around with it all day.
I have one question: has anyone else experienced lagging/ glitching while watching youtube videos? I wasn't sure what drivers to update for such a problem/ if its even in my control. It doesn't seem like a wifi problem, it more like the video is skipping as a DVD would. It makes the same muttering sound as my Alienware m14x R2 used to make before I updated the sound blaster drivers. -

Download the latest from nvidia and install them over the top. Don't bother updating the Intel drivers unless you have issues.
-
Yup, thank you! I seemed to have updated the Nvidia drivers and Audio drivers from the msi site; however, I can't seem to connect to Nvidia gaming experience. I connect to everything else just fine, and can even see the window/ flick through the tabs of the Nvidia window, but I can't get through. Any suggestions?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I would update them directly from nvidia, not from MSI.

I have a couple of questions..
1) Anyone knows of a CPU fan replacement for the GS60 which will spin at around 800-1200 RPM initially, instead of 2800RPM+ ?
2) For the silent mode program from MSI, there are 6 temperature fields. Would it be safe to put 0 0 0 40 60 80 in those fields?
In other words, would it be safe to leave the CPU without any cooling until about 60 degrees? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
1) No, it's a custom fan and must spin that fast to cool the parts.
2) Yes 60C is not too bad. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You can use Svet's tool to accomplish all of your goals, but there may be a limitation in regards to fan speed, there's a lowest value where it cannot go any lower because it would stop spinning instead. -
I am wondering, why when I run some program installs, or certain windows settings for example, the window is not displayed with native resolution, it looks blurry and not clear.. any ideas?
-
Hey guys, long time lurker, just created a login id.
Still configuring it to my liking. Will try to get a game running in a few hours.
Does anyone here have any idea how can we check if i have the ESS Sabre in this?
First impressions :touchpad needs some tweaking. Requires too much force to tap.
Killer 1525? I thought this comes with killer 1535

EDIT : So I've had it for a few hours now, and this is what I can say
Pros : Pretty darn awesome to be able to get about 60fps on advanced warfare on such a light machine (maxed out but without post AA or SS)
amazing screen. I have a 2412m for my desktop, and a SAMOLED on my phone. Now that I have an IPS (or IPS like TN, have no idea what panel this is using, please tell me how I can check) on a laptop, the circle is complete
awesome keyboard, with so much bling!haha, jokes aside, typing on it is fun, the click noise is just nice that its not annoying
I just couldn't find any keyboard flexing on this, rigid as hell
I love how I can hibernate and get back into the system in seconds, I guess I can thank the PCIE SSD for that
Speakers are actually not too shabby. I'm not sure if this has 2 or 4 speakers because it really sounds like there's something on the top part and not just the bottom front. Watching netflix with nahimic turned on is really clear. Wouldn't game with it obviously, but really nice for videos
ESS Sabre DAC! I screwed up when I first plugged my XBA H3 in the headphone jack by choosing SPDIF accidentally, but when i chose the headphones settings in nahimic, I then saw the glorious logo on the nahimic GUI. Just knew there was something special with the audio circuits as it was sounding way above average when I tried it out in the store
Cons :
HATE the touchpad!! My old n55sf is worlds better in this category. I mean I have to hit hard (and not tap) to actually choose something. The slightest tap would register, if I was using my n55sf, but not this oneI tried the display version too and it was the same. Will just have to get used to tapping harder. The click buttons are crazy loud too.
I actually tried the gt72 touchpad, and that was wonderful, although the buttons were crazy stiff, but at least the touchpad was awesome.
Does get pretty loud while gaming ( I have never had a gaming laptop before, so I wouldn't know how to rate its loudness) but I would say Im not annoyed by it, largely because I have my earphones on while gamingBut yeah its not so loud that its distracting; for example while a game is loading and u can hear the fans, it not really that bad.
I really thought this would come with the 1535, but the 1525 seems ok. I would have been crazy dissapointed if the 1535 was a triple spatial stream tho, but since its still a dual spatial stream, just with better 5ghz capability, I guess its not too bad to not have it. At least this 1525 is WORLDS ahead of my old wireless n 150mbps which was on the n55sf lol. That could barely reach 10mbps most of the time. I need this as I transfer files to and from my NAS alot, using an ac68u, so the 1525 will definitely help alot.
Im not sure if I can do much test during the weekdays, but if you guys have any request I will try to fulfill it if I canLast edited: Sep 20, 2015 -
Have you owned the previous models? I'm wondering how the keyboard compares to the older one. I read a couple articles noting that the keys felt cheaper and more plastic-like. -
-
When do you guys think i'll be able to order a ghost pro with skylake // ddr4 etc? Don't want to pull the trigger on anything now, because the new tech is here... just waiting for some kind of confirmation that it's available from MSI ( I know they announced everything september 2)

You need to get the DPI back to 100 percent to avoid that. I noticed that at 125 percent, while everything is more correctly sized, certain programs and icons were just too blurry. I'm surprised that my old 1600x900 laptop didn't do this, but just a slight increase in res is causing this.
Icons and taskbar are definitely smaller now but they are fine for me.
Another thing I forgot to mention about the skylake ghost pro is that the Intel driver kept on crashing and recovering while using Edge, updated to the 4279 Intel HD Graphics driver and no issue so far. The Netflix app is still crashing though, not sure is it a driver issue or app issue.
Laptop idles at around 40 degrees in a room without aircon or fan which is awesome. But would be better if I can reduce the fan speed. Will be checking out the svet tool soon.

Ok, so I already gave up on the battery life. I just have learned to live with it and be plugged in at almost all times.
However, I still have serious issues with the touchpad. Sometimes it misbehaves badly. It doesn't register movements and sometimes skips taps. What's worse is that there are times where registers wrong movements and taps, so I end up clicking things that I didn't wanto to. It's not always but when it happens it drives me crazy. Any ideas on how to solve this? Is this common? Think it's a hardware issue? -
What is the touchpad sensitivity you're using? I'm using it at max and so far it's not erratic. Did this only recently happened ?
What about drivers? Did you recently update? If you did , try rolling back. If you didn't try updating.
I really how this isn't another reliability issue with msi parts :/

Curious, do you have the 4k display? -
its a nice LG 1080p panel. Very happy with it. No issue with viewing angles. I got a free office 365 (by the store guy, not MSI) with this. Will try it out soon, to see if this has that yellow mustard color issue, but I guess that is more of an issue on the 4k panel. -
Btw, I'm still on Win8, but I guess that shouldn't be the problem.
