If you can't find games performances for GTX 970M, a good approximation is looking for GTX 960 performance (desktop GPU, much more common to be included in benchmarks than notebook GPUs).

Quick googling shows Mortal Combat X doesn't seem to be very demanding and should run well:

Yup, it didn't, but it shows other titles for you to compare with.
Thanks to aqnb, he has a more direct comparison though. :)

Can anyone provide pics/video showcasing the mustardness of the new Skylake 4K screen? I am about to hit buy, but this is holding me back. Thanks!

I put pictures on my review on ultrabookreview.com but it's very difficult to capture digitally. You have to see it in person to appreciate it less.

You can also look up complaints for the y50. It's the exact same screen

I thought the y50 screen was the older 48hz model? The new model is supposed to be 60hz, or am I mistaken about that? I am speaking specifically of the SkyLake version, not the Broadwell (which you reviewed on Ultrabookreview).

    Thanks.

I'm actually getting this for travelling. I want to play fighting games for this laptop. (The Sager NP9377 S is heavy so I'll use that for home gaming).

I hope the MSI GS60 can run 1080p 60fps for Street Fighter V. The recommended GPU for it is 960GTX.

So is the screen in the new Skylake GS60 the same mustard-tainted 4K panel as the previous version? If so, does anybody know any resellers that provide a different panel? This (and the awful dragon logo on the lid) are the only things keeping me from picking up the refreshed GS60.

Does anyone's GS60 skylake make fan noise for no reason? It seems that only one fan is running on mine and making noise on one side the moment it turns on.. I checked the Dragon Gaming Center and it shows only one fan running constantly. It wasnt like that when I first bought it.

Also Is there also anyway that MSI can detect what drivers or BIOS updates i need? My XPS was a lot easier in that sense and it was easy to update everything.. I factory reset it and havent done much with it since..

So is it supposed to be that way? It didnt sound like this when I used it the first couple days. For gaming it would be understandable but like, I only have google chrome...

It's part of the fan profile to keep it on. You can tweak it with the software on msi's website

Maybe you were in a room where the ambient noise is louder? I can't hear my fan when my AC is on.

The software had been linked multiple times in both threads. I'm remote right now or if look myself. Google silent option fan tool msi

I have a question, fellow MSI GS60 users. The Street Fighter V PC beta will begin on 10/23/2015. Did anyone of you guys preorder to get the beta?

Kinda sucks for me that I do not have the MSI GS60 yet so I am unable to check if Street Fighter V will run max settings on 970m. (1080p 60fps)

    BIOS ver : http://prntscr.com/8tjuk1
    Other : http://prntscr.com/8tjv45

I haven't downloaded any drivers/BIOS updates etc. The fan sorta drives me nuts because when I'm in school, I don't want it to make noise. For the first week that I had it, it made no noise.
I'm up to the point to return it although I really don't want to.

What you are hearing is the CPU fan, and as others have told you it ran all along, and always has since the very first GS60 version (I know because I owned it too). Not sure why you didn't hear it initially, but it was in fact running at ~2800RPM all along. We've discussed this for years.

The good news is there are ways around it. I personally don't bother any longer because I no longer even hear it unless I'm in a dead quite room, and even then it's still quiet, but the silent fan tool will solve it if you get the right version, or you can custom flash the EC and permanently modify the fan tables to whatever setting (ie silent/off) you'd like.

Tons of info on the boards we've discussed over the past years regarding the fans, should pop up with some searches. Silent fan tool will be your easiest bet, followed by SVET 's fantastic tool.

Good luck, don't let the fan stop you, it's a simply tweak.

Well i live in NYC by a highway and now i'm in florida in silence loool...I guess you could be right..however that silent fan tool wont work for my laptop, as It was the first screenshot i put. I downloaded it off the MSi forums and anyone with a 6QE or Pre-installed windows 10 model said it wouldnt work for them. I thought maybe updating the Bios would help but it ended up being 100x more tedious than I thought it would... Where do I download one that works for Windows 10? I dont know what to do at this point

Silent Option also works fine on my Windows 10 GS60 2QE Broadwell. My BIOS version is E16H5IMS.501, 2015-07-20. I haven't updated my BIOS since I got it. (I tried to update it but I forgot why I stopped, I think there was a warning or something... and since everything works fine, I didn't bother to continue or search for solution.)

Yep, definitely returning it. svet said the skylake version isn't supported yet. I can't use either tool until it supports the Skylake version. My return policy is 14 days so I don't think I have the patience. I really like this laptop but this noise is killin me. Im surprised no reviews or even the laptops on display in certain retail locations make this amount of noise.

I literally have it next to an Xps 15 2013 and a MBP 2012 and the MSI makes much more noise doing nothing...maybe I have a defective unit?

Have you tried changing to "green mode" in dragon gaming center? Switching from MBP, I also complained about the noise 2 months ago and it's ok now with silent option + green mode.

Hello everyone, long time lurker first time post here. I currently have the GS60 2QE ghost pro 970m with the 4th gen hashwell processor. I did a clean install of win10 since I didn't really like win8.1. Issue here is I can't seem to find the right drivers to install. I saw someone reply on this thread saying that the 5th gen broadwell drivers for win10 listed in MSI's website will work just fine. I tried looking for the win10 drivers on their website but could only find for win8.1. If someone can point to the right direction it would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Hi all, Just bought this laptop, the skylake version, nice laptop, pity about the fans and speakers, but im going to buy a Bluetooth speaker probably and hope someone comes out with a fix for the fans, anyway, that isn't why im here, can anyone help me with the RGB keyboard lighting, I set all zones to white but along the bottom set of keys some of them are blue and others greenish, I will post a picture. Does anyone else have this problem? It shows in the picture but it is more prominent in person.

We all have the same issue unfortunately. It's most obvious with white but you'll notice it with anything other than red, green and blue since every other color is a mix of those leds plus the white backlight.

My friend and I took the bezel off the screen and then used electrical tape over the areas you could see the bleeding from the light nodes...It helped dramatically, but if you do not have steady hands and/or have not worked on really sensitive electronics like cell phones or anything micro before, I would advise against it.

Got mine last night and its back in the box going back to Newegg.

I heard the fans 90% of the time over 100% volume in a game of BF4. The fans were stupid loud for doing nothing. I let it sit on the desktop and while at 32c the cpu fan is just still kicking it at least 50% for no reason.

Touchpad clicks are also very loud and feels cheap. I had backlight bleeding on every corner and every side. Not horrific but easily seen on black backgrounds. Im not even over exaggerating. I loved the form factor, the weight, the viewing angles.. but I did not expect it to be this loud.

Hi there, I just did this upgrade last night with the same machine. These are the drivers I used along with an install order for the most critical ones... http://www.msi.com/product/notebook/support/GS60-2QE-Ghost-Pro-5.html#down-driver&Win10 64 I uninstalled every driver listed on these pages with a Windows 10 version then went through with the upgrade. Working perfectly so far.

I was literally just about to click "buy" on this laptop until I read this thread.

The two issues that seem to be dealbreakers are:
    1. Fan noise while doing nothing (or low-settings gaming). Does anyone have a video or some way that I can hear the volume of this before purchasing it? I'd love to know how bad it really is.

    2. The 4k screen being "mustard yellow" -- can someone confirm that the 60hz skylake version indeed looks crappy?

Even if the yellow screen is still bad -- I can I can always get the 1080p screen - no biggie. But loud fans being distracting could indeed be a dealbreaker.

Love to hear any thoughts the owners have on this.

    Thanks! :)

My fans are quiet but that's only because I changed the fan settings with the tool msi has. Unfortunately, it's not compatible with Skylake yet though

@Xentar712 thanks, I will be getting a Skylake for sure. Has anyone had any luck contacting MSI about an update for the tool for Skylake?

Xentar: What is the name of the MSI tool program you use to adjust the fan behavior?

Oh I thought he developed both. That tool you linked came first when the 800m series were still out there. I don't know if it's compatible with skylake but I'm sure if you ask him, he'll let you know. The silent option tool is certainly more user friendly for changing things on the fly, but that tool does the same thing.

So to elaborate on the Skylake fans, I bought the GS60 6QE, the fans were annoying the hell out of me since it was on one side but only when I was on vacation since it was super silent down there. I live in NYC so the highway noise overlaps the fan noise. Svet has a tool and so does MSI but none are compatible with Skylake. I had to return it because it was super sluggish, and the screen started tweaking and spazzing out for no reason. However there hasnt been any in Best buy's stock for almost 2 weeks. They want to reimburse me the 4K model free of charge but idk if that one is worse than the 1080 one....aside from the fan i really liked the laptop. What should i do?

Have you tried shifting from "sport mode" to "green mode"?
