EDIT: New issue. Does anyone else have their discrete gpu heating up for no reason?

It's under no stress, all I'm running is google chrome right now and yet it's at 55 C. When it gets to that temp the fans turn on for a few seconds, cool it back down to 52 C and then it rises again to 55 C, and the cycle repeats.

    It's really bugging me.

    Hi everyone,
I'm seeying a drastic performance drop on my GS60 6QE when updating the nvidia drivers from the stock 353.74 to the latest 361.43. I've tried running the 3DMark11 to verify and got a 9300 score where the usual was 9600 or above. This is also noticeable when running some games, as it gets choppy in areas that would otherwise run fine. Reverting the drivers has made my system run nicelly again, but I wonder why has this happened. Is it that the current release of the nvidia drivers has some internal issue or some other reason? Has anybody else experienced the same problem?

No problems so far with Nvidia driver 361.43 here: GS60 2QE, Windows 8.1.

I don't track 3dmark11 performance but 3dmark firestrike got slightly better with the latest drivers.

Though my max scores were several driver versions before so regresses can and do happen. That said, over longer time periods performance generally gets better - stock drivers from about year ago were noticeably slower than any recent drivers.

If you get performance drop somewhere where it matters for you (some games/apps may get better, other may get worse with the same driver update, Nvidia does game-specific fixes), just downgrade drivers and then you can try again when new version comes (usually at least once a month).

If you have the Nvidia Global 3d setting Power Management Mode set to Prefer Maximum Performance instead of Adaptive, change it back to default (Adaptive).

    Nvidia Manage 3D Global settings.JPG

In some situations, with some driver releases, the GPU frequency will lock high. You can check this out with GPU-Z in the Monitoring / Sensors tab.

    Thanks a bunch aqnb.
By the way, any idea were can I find the serial number of my graphic card? To avoid voiding the warranty I don´t want to open the computer, but currently Nvidia is giving away games to people who have bought the 970m or bigger and I'd like to claim the game.
I've already tried with the one displayed in the device manager on windows 10 but no luck.

As far as I'm aware, these type of promotions are handled by notebook sellers, it's not something between notebook owners and Nvidia.

That is: the place where you bought your notebook from needs to have a deal with Nvidia. If you bought your notebook in the right place at the right time, you will get a code which can be then used at Nvidia site to redeem Steam code (participating shops are often explicitly listed).

If you didn't get a code right away with your notebook, you may ask your notebook seller if they could send you one.

But it's not guaranteed you can get it just because you got notebook with GPU mentioned in Nvidia promotional info. Shop needs to participate, they must not had run out of codes and you must do it in particular window of time (purchase vs promotion date).

For example when I bought my GS60, there was a big media campaign about Witcher 3 being included with particular Nvidia GPUs but my notebook shop wasn't participating so I couldn't get it.

Hello again, I was thinking... Do any of you actually use the USB-Type C port? (Thunderbolt 3?) if so, with what, a usb 3 hub? file transfers? It is supposed to be the "one port/cable to do it all", how so?

Obviously, I'm not using it currently, I was just wondering how it is better to have 2 USB 3's and a Type-C vs 3 USB 3's... I know it is more future proof so the idea being you only need one USB-Type C? but really, what even uses this port at the moment?, it's not like I can get better transfers from my existing portable HDD's.

    Thanks.

What level of brightness do you guys prefer? (I guess it also depends on the brightness in the room from other sources, but please share.)

I like about 30% but it also depends on how much nits we're talking about at 30% and 100% which varies from panel to panel. But I am picky about the brightness because I don't want my eyes to deteriorate due to bright light.

Does anybody know the make and model of the default NVMe SSD (128GB) that comes with this system? The BIOS lists it as a Toshiba, but that model number that's listed in the BIOS doesn't come up anywhere in a google search. I'm trying to figure out what drive to use for it when installing Win7.

Hey guys how's it going. Had this laptop for about a month now or so and gotta say I really like it, but I've been so busy I haven't gotten to sit down with it for a long session in a while.

Just wondering if the way the CPU fan behaves is normal? Sometimes when the fan is spinning at around 2500 to 3500 RPM, it will go completely quiet at 0 RPM, and after 3-4 seconds the fan will start spinning up again at a loud 4500-4800 RPM then steadily drop back down to 2500-3500. Checking the speed in the Dragon Gaming Center software. This is only on the CPU fan, the GPU fan doesn't have this behavior. The stop-and-start is pretty annoying, why is it dropping to 0?

This is possibly a fan table issue so you can probably try updating the EC firmware to the latest version, or you can ask Svet to create a custom-made EC firmware for you instead which will suit your needs.

    Hi everyone,

How about 1080p panel in GS60-6QE?

Is PLS made by Samsung or IPS made by LG Philips?

I use about 30%, it's too bright at 100% desktop mode, in gaming though I usually put the brightness at full.

Edit: mine is the matte 1080p panel

In my office(which is very bright) I use 100% to remove the glare(3k glossy panel). Otherwise at home it's around 50%

Why is it every time I restart the laptop. I have to manually press FN + 1,2,3 or 4 to change from the red keyboard colours? I Reboot it with the blue colour scheme but it always goes back to red unless I change it. (Custom profile too)

Has the mustard yellow issue been fixed on the 4K version?

I'm considering purchasing this for photo editing and gaming. Accurate yellows are important for the type of photo edits I do. Thx.

    Hi guys.

    I has GS60 970M 4k screen.

After upgrading to windows 10 I have noticed when running games in 1080P or 2048x1152 (with the same display res on laptopn desktop). A line appears from the top right corner to the bottom left whenever the screen moves in games. (vsync is on ETC). This has appeared with a few games now as well as other resolution issues. When screen is set to 3840x2160 (recommended) it seems to be fine but runs high temp.

has ANYONE else had these problems?

Does it look something like this?

    https://forums.geforce.com/default/...ctx-windowed-mode-on-gtx-970m-amp-gtx-870m/1/
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/...sues-on-gtx-860m-870m-960m-965m-970m-980m-/1/
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/strange-diagonal-screen-tearings.771358/

There is a systematic problem with all recent notebooks with Nvidia Optimus where there is diagonal screen tearing when displaying Nvidia GPU accelerated content in windowed mode (it doesn't even have to be a game, web browsers or Photoshop can get those tears too when running on Nvidia instead of Intel iGPU).

    Yes similar to this.

I have to run most games at 2048x1152 for less demand on the system. Some won't go full screen.. so I use flawless widescreen app + change desktop to 2048. What is the point in having this 4k screen when games need to run on 2048 Res?

Maybe I should downgrade back to windows 8.1?

There isn't lol. That's why most reviews recommend against it. Maybe in a couple years laptop gpus will handle the resolution.

You can try running Windows at full 4K resolution, but then change resolution directly in the game settings (let's say 1920x1080), setting exclusive fullscreen mode.

So far I didn't have any game which wouldn't allow that, but I'm not a big gamer, so maybe some games are limited. In that case you'll have to change Windows resolution (instead of running game in windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode).

Also if game has DirectX 9, DirectX 11 or OpenGL renderer options, changing between those may help with those diagonal tearing artefacts (though it's not guaranteed).

This problem only seems to show itself when running gpu accelerated apps in windowed or borderless window so when possible, try to run stuff in exclusive fullscreen mode (which kinda sucks because you lose that free windows vsync and custom color profile support). What's interesting is not all games seem to be affected (witcher 3 and alien isolation look fine to me for example), while others like Lightning Returns produce even more artifacts than just diagonal tearing.

I wish nvidia would come out with a fix or even a "we are aware of the issue and investigating" PSA but somehow, I doubt that's going to happen seeing as how this seems to have a been a problem for several months now.

    hi there, I just got my 4k MSI GS60 ghost pro 4k (haswell i7-4720HQ). After reading on the forums, Ive read the panel would have a 48hz refresh rate. However, Intel shows that the panel has a fixed 60hz refresh. Ive checked HWinfo about my screen type, and its the following screen ;
    Monitor Name (Manuf): SAMSUNG LƒFL156FL02-P01
After checking it out, it seems it has a 60hz refresh aswell. Whats going on? Does my model has a 60hz or 48hz refresh rate? Im confused.

Newer GS60 models already got 60 Hz refresh for their 4K screens.

MSI tends to update notebooks with new things as they come, not just making well-defined models with fixed feature sets (e.g. I know somebody who bought an older model with one CPU listed, but what actually arrived had already newer CPU, also got that soft layer thing at the bottom of chassis to prevent burns that officially came only with newer models).

So it's possible your unit may have gotten already updated screen even while still being just Haswell version that used to come with 48Hz screen when it launched.

As far as I'm aware, the 4K screen itself always allowed for 60 Hz, it was something in MSI system board and/or drivers that limited it to 48 Hz. So that's probably what you've got.

Am I the only one with GPU coil whine? Listen here (and turn up the volume, I recorded with my phone). I never heard of the 970M having this but getting it fixed involves tremendous amounts of hassle and spending over $100 on shipping.

If this isn't something to worry about and it won't degrade the lifetime of my notebook I can live with it (and save $100 and potentially long wait if 970M 6GB can't be had in Europe), but if it's bad I'd want it taken cared of. Can someone chime in considering this is a 970M and not a 970 whining and buzzing?

Just ordered an MSI with some sweet custom options, can't wait to get this new beast arriving next Friday.

I have a couple of questions for owners .

    1) anyone use Adobe Lighroom with this laptop? Does the screen do an ok job ?

    2) Longshor but anyone play Football Manager 2016? Any issues on this laptop?

    3) can anyone share some fps on max settings with Rise of Tomb Raider and Dirt Rally

    4) Is there an IPS 1080p option for this laptop? or is that just Origin PC offering it on their new EVO15-s?

    5) What's the best option for a bag for this laptop, I prefer a messenger type bag

    Thank you.

I'm seriously considering buying this laptop with 4k and 6th gen processor or the XPS 15.
However I have couple of question that I would really appreciate any input

    1. Considering this is a Thunderbolt 3 supported device, is it safe to assume that its eGPU certified like the XPS15? (major deciding factor)
    2. I will be watching alot of movies and TV shows and light causal gaming like Simcity/Cities:Skylines and Counterstrike, will yellowish 4k issue ruin the experience? and is it bright enough?
    3. I will be shipping this to Bahrain (Middle east), what vendors do you guys prefer for stress testing and to check for any issues or hardware defects and damages since shipping will cost 150usd alone.

( No MSI products available locally, or with 30-50% markup from retailers in neighboring countries so I prefer online)

    Thanks in advance.

    1. It is certified otherwise it cannot be implemented.

    2. You won't know until you watch it and really compare it against something else.

    3. Many vendors on the forum will ship to Bahrain, and surely every vendor performs stress tests prior to shipping the system out to customers.

Might be a bit of a long shot, me asking this question, but is there any chance I could replace the 4k 48hz panel in my laptop with the new one?

Some games refuse to work with the 4k, even while turning down the resolution to 1080p, such as just cause 3. No matter what I tried, the only solution was to play it on a monitor.
Yellowish 4k will not ruin the experience at all, but if you have an orange windows theme or the doge theme in chrome, it can look a bit odd.

    I recommend xoticpc.

Also, if you are going to use an eGPU, it kind of defeats the purpose of such a powerful laptop, does it not?
