    Hi guys.

I have a GS60 4k 2qe (Broadwell). I was thinking to downgrade the 48Hz 4k panel to a 1080p matte one, or a 4k panel from the new skylake version. Do you think that will remove the refresh rate limit?
Any other information would be helpful (PS I'm super new to this stuff).

    Thanks

Yeah, because the limitation is on the panel itself so if you switch to a regular 1080P panel then you wouldn't have any limitation on the refresh rate.

Hey everyone, glad to see this thread is still kicking :D.

So there's a slight issue that popped up with my model two days ago: The right fan for the CPU has been making this higher pitched "gargling" sound that's a tad bit annoying... I opened the back up just to see if I could see if any stray hairs were flying around in there, but there was nothing but light dust. I didn't open the back up to the fans all the way because I didn't feel like digging that deep into the system and screws for fear of breaking something, but from where I could see there wasn't any interference with the fan. The left fan is doing fine and isn't making the noise, and I'm at a lost as to what to do. Should I just live with the sound? Got my PC from Gentech in Oct' 15 should I send it in for repairs from MSI?

See if you can reseat the CPU fan and test it again after. If the symptom persists then you may need to replace it due to possibly a worn out bearing of the fan.

Hmm... I see... Would I have to take out the motherboard in order to do that? On the disassembly video I saw, I saw them lift it along with the board, but I want to remove as little as possible to get to the fans. What are the main things I should just remove to get to the fan disassembly?

Additionally, does it help to say that the fan makes different sounds based on the laptop's positioning?? For example, if the gargling gets a bit louder, if I shift the laptop a bit in different direction the gargling gets quieter. This is also the case depending on whether the unit is on my desk or on its fan stand. Also. the fan makes a harsher sound when the unit is on and I lower it in mid air quickly. Would any of these additional "symptoms" point it in the direction of needing repair or just needing to be reseated?

No you won't have to but please be careful while working on it because any accident cause certain components to become damaged without notice.
If the fan bearing is worn then it will not spin with balance therefore the blades can be rubbing against its housing. Since it's still under warranty, it is a better option to have MSI resolve it for you.

Haha ^^" Thanks for the tip, but now I'm a bit more worried seeing as I can damage things without noticing. I'll consider sending it into MSI now. Thank you!!

It doesn't matter. MSI machines never work right anyway. On paper, they are a perfect machine. But you are always repairing them, down loading this, or downloading that. BS, a Sony or Acer works perfect for many years without needing constant revised downloads. I could damn sure use the $2500 I spent on my paperweight: and that does not include months of product selection and trying to get mine going for two consecutive years (2 months each year starting up, plus 4 months spent on getting my $100 coupon back from MSI!)

If you are still within a return warranty, GO FOR THE REFUND! I don't care if you lose 60% net, they are a constant headache and you need an Acer or Sony anyway while you are constantly repairing your MSI pc. Good luck, or better yet, sell it and let someone else enjoy your continuous nightmare.

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest you update the audio drivers to Nahimic version 2. It's a two step process outlined on their support page that also involves updating the Realtek HD Audio drivers first. It completely resolved some gremlins I was having with my machine. You've probably already resolved this, but if not...

Update on my "gargling" CPU fan noise: I didn't mention that a few of the rubber feet on the bottom were coming out of place/ were already off (specifically the back ones near the fans and the little one in the middle) because I didn't feel that was part of the problem and I used a desk anyway ,so I didn't seem much haste in gluing them back on quickly. Last night, I set some epoxy on those that were out of place/ off and this morning the fan sound is clean as a whistle! I would have never thought that these were the cause of the issue, but maybe it can help someone out there who is experiencing similar troubles! Thanks for the help!

How hard is it to upgrade the m.2 memory slot. Also what's the original one in the laptop? Is it similar to the 950 pro? Iv got the msi gs60 6qe the latest version

Hi, I have same laptop (msi gs60 6qe - skylake 6700hq+ 970m) and I asked for upgrade from stock 128gb to samsung 950 pro nvme ssd and they (store) did it for me. As far as I know changing SSD rather than HDD is harder on msi 6qe because ssd is on "the other side" of motherboard- that was main reason why I ask them to change it for me. I'm not 100% sure but I think that I read that there are also some problems when installing NVMe ssd and windows (ssd wasn't recognised when installing windows).

    Good luck! :)

At Computex MSI told GS63 with Pascal GPUs should come to market in October 2016.

Some GS63 version with Maxwell GPU may come earlier (I think I have seen somewhere mentioned August?), but it doesn't really make sense to buy anything but Pascal.

I see... well I hope they're on schedule. really looking forward to get this 15" notebook.
i actually wanna go smaller and lighter with the MSI GS40 series, but since no update announced for that line, I guess 15" will do.

I have the GS60 6QE which came with a 128GB M.2 and a 1TB HDD. I swapped out the 1TB HDD for a 480GB SSD. That was pretty painless, just a case of removing the bottom cover, disconnecting a ribbon cable and lifting out the old HDD. I watched a video on the M.2 replacement and it's a bit more involved but not too difficult from what I could tell.

Does anyone know how easy it is to upgrade the memory? Mine shipped with 8gb. Would be nice to chuck another 8gb in there.

it's a bit of a chore because the ram slots are on the other side and the only way to access them is by disassembling parts one by one. There's a youtube video for it (or maybe for MSI GS70, i forgot). But since GS60 and GS70 share similar layout with ram slots on the other side of the motherboard, i believe they share the same difficulty.

    Hello everyone,

I am looking for a gaming laptop that is neither too big nor too heavy, hence I found the Ghost pro.
However, there seems to be some issues with it and the battery life seems mediocre. What kind of battery life do you get for non-gaming stuff, like doing some word/excel, Chrome with some stuff in the background?

All in all, would you recommend this laptop?
I was also looking at the Razr ones, but they are very hard to find (if not impossible) in France.

    thanks!

    Hello, lillumultipass99.
I own a 2QE version which has a 4K display but I use it at 1080p resolution which I have owned for 9 months now. So far I've reached 3 hours at most while on Battery saver (Windows 10) with the brightness down to 25%, the keyboard lights OFF and only running the minimum background software. If you want to watch videos or listen to music, plugging in headphones/earphones helps conserve battery life. Full charging takes approximately 2-3 hours.
There are some other issues I've experienced, though. If you're in a relatively dusty environment, do clean it often. Laptop gets dusty very easily so I clean the chassis 3-4 times per day and I still haven't cleaned the insides but they must be very dusty. Also, I play graphics-demanding games at 1080p resolution so the notebook doesn't burn to ashes due to the heavy load, but that should be obvious since the FPS also becomes very low. If you can get your hands on a Cooler Master Notepal X3 laptop cooler, it could be quite handy since it would lower core temperatures with around 5 degrees Celcius and also cool your hands while playing.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Would be glad to share what I know.

Thanks a lot for your answer! Yeah, 3H with those settings is indeed pretty low.
I guess playing without the laptop being plugged is out of the question, right? But then, why get a laptop in the first place (Ok, I am oversimplifying things a bit...)?

I wonder if that's really the laptop I am looking for (I am also not an hardcore gamer, so maybe I should be looking at something a bit more polyvalent).

And, how does the Ghost handle day-to-day task, like editing a video, programming...I guess it is quite fast, right?

"If the battery dies out so quickly, why get a laptop in the first place?" I have asked this question to myself many times. And the reason I come up with is fairly simple - from time to time I visit friends to play games or go to my hometown and that's when I actually need the portability of this laptop. It's also applicable to school/uni activities such as writing on a keyboard rather than on a sheet of paper but that's something any notebook could do. Weight matters to some, though.
It's fast, yes. Really fast. Daily task are no sweat and I have no idea about coding or programming but when a video is being rendered (I use Sony Vegas Pro) it gets quite hot. I think it's fine, though, since some games give the CPU an even bigger push, so no problem there as long as the exposure is not too prolonged. I haven't rendered videos longer than 10 minutes (which takes around an hour and a half to render in 1080p), but maybe more than a 30 minute FHD video could make a bit of an impact on the thermal paste. If that's how you're planning to use it, do give it a good change of thermal paste every few months.
As for other gaming laptops, there are some that could be compared to the Ghost Pro. Keep in mind that these are just what I found after a 5-10 minute search so if you choose one of these, don't feel obliged to find the absolute same model. For example there is: ASUS GL552VW-CN211D , Toshiba Satellite P50-C-17M, Lenovo Y50-70, Acer Aspire V5-591G, ASUS N552VX-FY209D. For video editing and programming CPU is important, so an i7 6700 is the best there is for now (as far as i know).

    Hello everyone !
Did any of you try to use external hdd dock (usb 3.0) on msi gs60 6qe? I have strange problem (dock for sure works on other machine w/ win10 and usb 3.0).
Disc and device is recognised and I can open files from disc normally, however I can't write files bigger than ~100mb on it. Transfer starts but after few seconds speed falls to 0. After that disc stops responding and windows disconnects the device.. I did update chipset but it doesn't help :(

Any ideas or did anyone had similar problems with transfer stopping after few seconds?

edit: @ lillumultipass99 I have this laptop for exactly 6 months (yay !). Its super fast and really portable. But as you notice battery life REALLY sux. I mean.. It's bad.. Very bad. For me it lasts 1 length of a movie (+- 90 min) at 30-50% brightness, no wifi, no internet, balanced or power saving. For typing and easy tasks I think it would last 90-120 min but I guess this is max (also brightness at medium and MAYBE no wifi/bt. More than 2 hours, in my opinion, is hard to achieve (you would need really easy program, minimal brightness and all power saving options you can turn on :p )

Before I bought it I knew the battery is bad but I didn't find any light, slim, powerful laptops to compete to msi gs60 (6qe). Ofcourse there were some alternatives but most of the time i found things that MSI had and other didn't (like ddr4 or NVME ssd or high price). I also use it to render videos+play some games+use other adobe programs+school works and it works well. In heavy tasks (eg. rendering, gaming) it gets really hot (+-85 C) but more important very LOUD (fans).

At that time (end of 2015 start of 2016) I was also considering those laptops:
    MSI GS60-6QE4K16H21
    msi ge62
    Apple MacBook Pro 15.4
    MEDION ERAZER X7842
    MSI GS70-6QE16H21

Battery life is not great. Probably 3-4 hours when you are doing normal computing. This is a great machine just be ready to be attached to your battery pack. Also I'm not sure any high powered gaming machine would be any better. You would need something designed for that

Hello everyone. I am having trouble with my touchpad. I dropped my phone on it and it dented in the bottom right corner so nothing can be clicked. I hate sending off my machine for repairs as I had issues the last time I did. Can I open up the bottom and easily access it or is it blocked by other parts.

@I.montiago - The touchpad and touchpad board usually are not easily accessible. I can't recall whether this model is one of the exceptions or not, but you can remove the bottom case assembly and take a look. If you can't see the bottom side of the click buttons, I think you'll have to remove the motherboard to access them.

That is strange. -30mV is a very minor undervolt. My GS60 CPU undervolt setting is -185.5mV. Done Prime95 (10 min test) & CPU intensive games (GW2 ~4hrs) stress test. Any higher and I get errors from test results on Prime95 but no crash from computer.

Stress testing using Witcher 3 (to get max temps) and letting my character stand next to a scene with lots of characters and physics I got two results, one with undervolt CPU and one with without the undervolt. Max FPS set to 45.

The results on 'comfort mode' without undervolt is a max CPU temp of 81°C and GPU temp of 88°C.
With undervolt is a max CPU temp of 71°C and GPU temp 88°C.

The below follow up test where with undervoltage active.
'Sport mode' gives same results as 'comfort mode'. CPU: 71°C, GPU: 88°C
On the other hand 'Green mode' gives a small max temp drop in CPU for a max of 67°C. The GPU on the other hand gets a huge temp drop for a max temp of 73°C. (You also get a 5fps drop in Witcher 3)

*Note that these were taken in a room with no AC in Summer. Ambient temperature is 85°F with a humidity of 75%. Basically the same as outside. I imagine in a place with AC and controlled humidity like a library the max temperatures will drop by 5°C~7°C or even more.

I've recently been having lots of problems with my Killer Networks (1525) wireless adapter. It won't connect to any network. I have to reboot the computer multiple times and keep trying the connection. Eventually it will connect. Last night it took me about 2 hours to get connected.

Anybody else having problems with this card?

I just recently received this laptop no more than 2 days ago and I'm having an issue with wifi connectivity in general, whether I am using the Killer 1525 or a USB Wireless Stick, my ping is unreasonably high (200ms) only while my dGPU kicks in and reaches about 60C. If I take it off V-Sync and let the dGPU temp increase, the ping spikes up to as high as 2000ms.

I do not believe this is a overheating issue with the wireless card because the external wireless usb card gets the same ping as the built in killer 1525... which doesn't make sense if it was because of heat.

An ethernet connection gives me normal pings at around 60ms. I am totally stumped on what the issue is and I have been trying to fix it for days and I am at my wits' end. If anyone has run into this problem and found a fix please let me know.

Try updating the killer driver first see if it helps with the issue.

I did. I was getting the "No internet, open" message when trying to connect to any Wifi. After reading a bunch of stuff, I uninstalled the "suite" and installed the driver by itself. So I'm pretty sure it was the latest version. That seemed to help the first day I used it. The second day I tried to use it, I got no wifi at all in the exact same place. The day before, there were three commercial Wifi signals available. The second day, I had the red "X" on my Wifi icon and no Wifi available.

I'll try updating again. Maybe it didn't install correctly, or something, or maybe it was an old version.

    GS 2QE-606 i7-5700HQ owner here.

I was wondering if it's okay to update my BIOS to "E16H5IMS.111" as it's stated here, because my system BIOS is "E16H5IMS.504" and it's not the "1XX" format.

    Thanks!

That's not for you because your BIOS is 5XX, and the latest version is E16H5IMS.50B, download link provided below.

So the manufacturer website for my model is wrong? That's weird. Is there another way of checking for BIOS updates then?

    Thank you, though!

Search it by the ERP # which is 16H5, then find the BIOS that matches the version sequence.

Can you take a picture of your BIOS screen under System Information?
Need to make sure, thank you.

It may be savable but proceed at your own risks. You will need to disconnect it from the system, then attempt to clean the contact point with purified water because the dried residual of liquid can prevent connectivity, then let it sit dry. If problem persists, then contact your local MSI office to purchase a replacement keyboard.

    Hi!!!

I recently bought the laptop MSI GS60 6QE (Skylake version). It has Windows 10 pre-installation included as factory settings.

However, I bought this laptop for using it with Windows 7, as my job demands to use this OS. When trying to install Windows 7 from a booteable USB pen drive in BIOS LEGACY mode, Windows 7 does not recognise the USB or SSD. Windows 7 installation is pending for some drivers which I do not know where they are and how to obtain them. Apparently, the USB 3.0 ports stop working (USB mouse seems disconnected). Hence, the OS installation cannot continue due to Windows 7 missing some drivers.

The main issue is that this laptop does not have an CD/DVD optical drive and all their USB ports are 3.0 and 3.1 C - Thunderbolt 3. This means that the only way to install Windows 7 is through USB port.

Therefore, I am writing to kindly ask any of you for technical support. How can I install Windows 7 for this specific MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 6QE skylake model? Did anyone manage to accomplish it?

Here are the most relevant details of the laptop:

    Product Name: GS60 6QE
OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64 bits
    BIOS Version: E16H7IMS.111
    BIOS Release Date: 2016/01/27
    EC Version: 16H7EMS1.1051109201508:38:54
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz
    Memory: 16 GB @ 1066 MHz
    - 8192 MB, DDR4-2133, SK Hynix HMA41GS6AFR8N-TF
    - 8192 MB, DDR4-2133, SK Hynix HMA41GS6AFR8N-TF
    Graphics: Intel(R) HD Graphics 530, 1024 MB
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M, 3072 MB
    VBIOS Version: 84.04.85.00.33,3145728
Drive: SSD, TOSHIBA THNSNJ256G8NY, 238,47 GB
Drive: HDD, HGST HTS721010A9E630, 931,51 GB
Network: Killer Wireless-n/a/ac 1525 Wireless Network Adapter
Network: Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Network: Killer E2400 Gigabit Ethernet Controller
ATA/ATAPI IDE controllers: Intel 100 Series/C230 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller

Thank you very much in advance!

    Best regards,

    Sam

I'm pretty sure there are no W7 drivers for this model since it was launched with 8.1.
Especially since this is a skylake model, the drivers may work, but they aren't made for W7.
You should be able to run pretty much anything W7 runs with W10 though, the OS isn't that different.

Recently started to experience problems when connecting to the 5 GHz network at home. I get disconnected all the time, and then I won't be able to get back online unless I connect to the 2,4 GHz AP on the same router instead. It's not a router issue as this doesn't occur on my Android phone, nor my GF's laptop. Didn't use to be like this a couple of weeks ago, but can't say what has changed except for maybe a few Win10 updates? Tried installing the newest driver for the Killer 1525 wireless card, but problem is still there.

    Anyone else experienced this lately?

    I got the GS60 2QE with the 4th gen Intel-CPUs.

Also, since I'm already writing, I also experience that the fan speeds up for a few seconds, and then goes back off/to a low speed repeatedly w/o any load on the laptop. E.g., I can just let it be on doing nothing at all whatsoever, and the fan will speed up - speed down - speed up - speed down and just keep going on like this. Any suggestions for that as well? I see MSI have added an updated FW for the EC with the comment "Add Fan smooth behavior." at https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GS60-2QE-Ghost-Pro-4.html#down-firmware, anyone who have experienced the same thing have tested this version to see if it fixes this problem?

    Regards//S.

Edit/update: Flashed the new EC firmware, and fan behaves much more reasonable now, however, it never seems to go completely off as it used to, but at least it doesn't spin up to max speed every 10 seconds, which is far more annoying than a constant noise at a way lower volume.

Any hints/solutions for the 5GHz is still appreciated.

Thank you for your reply, Aryemis.

After this long and terrifying nightmare, I’m bringing great news, as I managed to successfully install Windows 7 64 bits in MSI GS60 6QE!!!!! :-D I'm glad to post the final solution for future users suffering the same pain.

Let me explain you how I sorted out the way to solve it. Unfortunately, none of the previous posted solutions across the internet managed to work in my laptop, which is hard to understand. Here are the steps I followed:

    1) Download this Windows 7 ISO ( http://www.mantis.es/noticias/Win7SP1-Update-EN). It has all the necessary drivers included in order to being able to successfully install Windows 7 in a Skylake laptop.
    2) Create USB Installation Media as explained in previous link through Windows USB/DVD Download Tool.
    3) Restart, introduce bootable USB from step 2 and configure BIOS at MSI start (Delete key) as follows:
    - Boot mode: UEFI CSM
    - Fast Boot: Enabled
    - Change boot device order; 1rst Boot: UEFI USB with W7… etc
    - Secure Boot: Disable
    - USB Configuration: Enable XHCI support (just in case)
    - Press F10/Save and Exit
    4) After rebooting, Windows 7 installation starts to load (in case it didn’t, press F11 at the beginning and select the USB drive).
    5) Press “Install now” within W7 installation and afterwards, you will see the “Select partition to install W7” menu (IMPORTANT: this is the step where I was blocked previously, the reason I asked for assistance).
    6) Installation progresses, maybe a bit slow as many drivers are loaded (it is not blocked despite it looks like). As soon as it reaches the last step “Finishing installation”, it will reboot after a while.
    7) Remove USB driver or you’ll come back to step 5.
    8) Installation proceeds, it returns to the same step “Finishing installation”. Suddenly, the screen resolution will be adjusted to your default one (1920x1080).
    9) Wait around 3-5 minutes, when there is no more disk LED activity. As you may have realised, the installation seems to be running but it is actually blocked (it happened to me at least twice; NOTE: in case installation worked for you as normal, you can ignore the following steps and explanations, so congrats!). If so, you will be forced to press the on/off button until the laptop shuts down completely. After restarting the laptop, select “Initiate W7 normally” but you will face an error message saying that the Windows 7 installation could not be successfully accomplished…
    10) Here is the solution to this weird situation ( http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...pectedly/b770f14d-e345-e011-90b6-1cc1de79d2e2 ):
    J0seph Red:
    - “On the same error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a black Window. (a command prompt window)
    - In the black windows type the word "regedit"(without the inverted commas and hit enter. That will open the registry editor.
    In the Registry Editor..
    Browse to....
HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highliting childcompletion,on the right hand side check for setup.exe. if the value is 1 change it to 3.(by double clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box).
Then close the registry editor and then also close the black window.
Then click on OK for the error and the computer will restart and the installation may complete. just try it and let me know if it worked.”

Well, I can assure you that it worked for me :)
    11) After checking some video performance, Windows 7 will ask you for your User, Password and so on, which means you finally got Windows 7 installed as well after all this hassle!!!
    12) W7 starts the session with your new user.
    13) VERY IMPORTANT: As soon as you see the desktop for the first time, you MUST shut down/restart in order to let all the drivers from this ISO install correctly (the ones specified in their website). If you install your MSI drivers without restarting the laptop, they may be overridden (possible drivers mess).
    14) After restarting, a message will appear on the bottom-right saying “New hardware is being installed” (those ISO drivers). When it is finished, restart once again and now, you are finally free to install whatever you want, even to uninstall the drivers and updates included within the ISO. YEAAAAAAAH!!!

To conclude, I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks to Microsoft and Intel for complicating this simple operation and wasting our time in attempting to impose users their incompetence: whatever it takes to stay with Windows 10... Since when did we lose our right to use our bought software/hardware as we wish? Honestly, the more you both try to impose us your faulty hardware and software, the more ingenious and genuine alternatives users will bring to circumvent your stupidity. Cheers!!!

P.S: I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to “Mantis Informática”, the company which freely uploaded the Windows 7 ISO with all the necessary drivers included, and to J0seph Red for his solution.

    Hey there,

I have purchased the GS60 ghost pro with the 970m and FHD screen. I was wondering if I will be able to connect an external eGPU over the Thunderbolt 3 interface as I want to make a desktop pc docking at home(separate monitor, keyboard, mouse and if possible GPU as that one will get outdated pretty fast).

Are there any available thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosures yet ?
