So asking some specific questions here as the GX60 is looking more and more likely..

Trying to decide if its worth the extra £200ish to go for the Super RAID SSD/750GB HD/Blu Ray over the No Super RAID SSD/750GB HD/Combo Drive version of the GX (See Scan links in my last post for the models available to me)

Also the Super RAID SSD it would seem is 2x64GB devices in RAID 0 giving a 128GB "system" volume for OS/Apps ?

Wait, is it verified next gen will be the same socket? If they could beef it up to something like middle-range i5 performance, I think that would solve just about all performance issues and put the bottleneck back at the video card. Still, it'll run the games I want to play at super mega ultra, and new games still at pretty much max, so I'm not going to be horribly offended if its a new socket. Though, kind of defeats the purpose of making it a swappable CPU if you literally cannot get anything better...

Exactly, besides making a new socket is kinda chore.
They should stick to the current socket and concentrate just on making more powerful CPU's.

there is no confirmation that the sockets will remain the same, actually everything is leading to the opposite, its leaked that it wont be compatible in the desktop space, hardly think they wll maintain the compatibility on the mobile. Aside that the mobo manufacturers may need to update the microcode

Actually, everything I have read says Steamroller will be desktop compatable to both FM2 and AM3+. But everything has said it will not be compatable on mobile, a change to FS2, instead of FS1r2. Not sure why mobile trinity didnt go to this FS2 to begin with, but its kind of sad when they release a new socket every year. Drives new motherboard development, delaying implementation and limiting CPU sales.

Well, be that as it may, my next notebook will be a ThinkPad. This rig will last long enough and still play games reasonably well into the future, and with my ThinkPad T61p dieing a slow death, early 2013 I'll be picking up a ThinkPad, most likely an X1 Carbon - I'm holding out for the 1920x1080 IPS screen option that currently only exists in my fantasies... Either that or a ThinkPad T530 (or T430 if THOSE get a 1080p screen). I refuse to pay more than $500 for a laptop that does not have a 1080p IPS screen, if tablets can do it, it needs to be at the very least a 100-200 dollar option on notebooks.

Speaking of that, I need to get a new 1680x1050 IPS 15 inch screen for my T61p, it's barely visible in a mediocre brightness room and slightly yellowed... Granted, it's 6 years old, but if a 6 year old laptop has better resolution than what is available today (1600x900 TN panels? PLEASE, give me a break Lenovo, did you TRY to find the crappiest screen possible for the X1C?)

Aside from the quirks in performance with Enduro and the choice of CPU, are there any other issues I should be aware of before I finalise buying a GX60 ? as its getting to decision time for me the next 24hours.

Go for GX60, it is an amazing notebook.

The Enduro issues will be fixed and A-10 is not that bad!

It's just not worth paying extra few hundread bucks for i5/i7.

Yes I dont imagine ether is gonna be to much of a problem, hence I called them quirks rather then issues.

Now the only issue I am concerned about is an ergonomic one. Have not owned many notebooks, and never a serious gaming one. Most such notebooks have a tapered thickness going on .. thicker at the back then front which leads to a sloping of the keyboard and such. I suffer from a fair bit of weirdness in my arms/hands that may or may not be RSI related and therefore am very sensitive to positioning of keyboard/mouse on the desktop and im just not sure how this would affect use of thicker notebooks like the GX60.

Hm, it's too bad that it's hard or even maybe still impossible to see a GX60 on display in computer shops. That way you could see the laptop in real life and see how it would work for you with it's size and shape. As a gaming laptop - it is thicker, than normal laptop, since there is a beast GPU inside, that just loves some space to breathe. But GX60 is not so big, that it becomes a problem, so you shouldn't worry.

Also remember that cooler pads are not only for cooling the laptop, but for comfortable positioning it on the desktop at better angle for your hands wrists. Some pads even have adjustable angles, instead of just one fixed.

I, for instance, use a Zallman NC-2000 Cooler Pad from 2009 and it works perfect for my GX60, covers the entire butt of GX60 and places it at better angle, so typing on keyboard is even easier.

CES 2013 is just around the corner.

Will MSI show a GX60/GX70 with an AMD/ATI 7990M or other changes?

Is the "no stock" of the current GX60 suggesting an updated model in the wings?

    Are dealers under an NDA?

most dealers already confirmed that they're shipping the GX60 by this week... which mean no new gx60s..=[ It actually would sucks if there is a new one coming out... I woulda hold back for few more months..

What I am looking forward to is announcement of new CPUs from AMD, AMD haven't been stepping up in their game against Intel in a while, hopefully this year they bring out something exciting.

In my opinion, you're absolutely right about those assumptions, especially the second one. As a matter of fact you can see an MSI on the new AMD document which talks about the 8000M series.

Speaking of these quirks, anyone played GW2 on the GX60 ? its one of the most demanding games I play the moment in terms of CPU usage along with Battlefield 3 MP and SWTOR.

Don't worry, it's a lot better when Fraps is off. I tested it a little more and with no outside CPU tasking A-10 manages this game.

You usually get 30-45 fps on ultra, FHD, in multiplayer when you play BF3 on GX60.

Ordered my GX60 from Amazon today :D

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009P2EQWW/

At the time of ordering there were 2 left, and my order should ship tomorrow however now its saying wait time of 1 to 2 months.. interesting.

And I know about the Radeon 8xM series, and maybe that has something to do with it but that's not going to be in retail products for a few months and by all accounts will be in short supply initially anyway and my current system just wont last that long not least because the monitor backlight is failing.

To clarify this as I probably should have worded better. I didn't miss out on getting my GX60 hopefully if im reading amazon status right, it went to the wait time displayed on product page after my order was completed and set to "Dispatching soon"

Also this will be my first gaming notebook (normally do desktops).. *fingers crossed*

This is why I bought from Amazon :)

I am worried about ergonomics(as i have weird stuff going on with my arms.. especially right arm), noise and screen issues I may have (i.e back light bleed, dead pixels) but hopefully all will be well.

I need help on the best way to migrate to SSD. I tried the MSI BurnRecovery only to discover it also make a recovery partition as well as several other smaller unnecessary partition, taking up space on on SSD. Tried to make an image using Window 7 backup in Window 8, but failed. What's the most direct way of doing it (Acronis, EaseUS, Clonezilla?).

Assuming you only have a windows 8 upgrade key:

    1. Perform a clean windows 7 install on the SSD and activate it using the key on the bottom of the laptop.
    2. Upgrade to windows 8 using Windows Upgrade Assistant and activate.
    3. Install all drivers.

No, it's not an upgrade so no there is no clean window 8 installation disk. I am using the recovery disks I burned with MSI BurnRecovery.

A clean install would be easy.

I just wish MSI don't put in all sort of crap partition into my SSD with its recovery disks. Put a 17GB recovery partition on my SSD, also some boot loader for its recovery tool and etc taking up more of my precious SSD space. Simply outrageous.

I did try using Window 8 boot disk and diskpart to delete the carp partitions, but that makes OS not recognised and not bootable. Also tried Window repair with the boot disk and ran bootrec from CMD on the boot disk. It's not fixing the problem.

So I am recovering W8 into HDD and start all over again. Maybe someone used Acronis or other software with luck because MSI BurnRecovery is definitely not working for SSD migration!!!! DO NOT EVEN TRY!!!! It's almost like MSI is trying to make it difficult to migrate to SSD.

It was so much easier on my ASUS. It already came with recovery disc so I don't have to burn one and the recovery disc is just installing window for me, non of those making recovery partition function that I don't need.

If you used other cloning software with luck, please write down the procedure on how you migrate your W8 from HDD to SSD. I am quite sick of experimenting. Thank you.

If you are going to use any cloning software make sure it supports Dynamic Disk or your clone will not work. Since I used the Acronis software that came with my Kingston SSD 3K upgrade kit and it was a no go, keep getting errors.

So in the end, I have to DL W8 from MSDN. Now I am installing. Hopefully W8 is smart enough to pickup the activation code from SLP 3.0 so it won't ask me for activation when installation complete.

    Maybe it's the 128GB M4 SSDs?

The Lite-On mSATA raid0 scores in the Acer ultrabook are the benchmarcks that amaze me more than these Super Raid scores.

You need the 256GB drives to max out the performance of the M4. The read speeds are close to 1GB/sec though.

Got myself in a bit of a panic here before I open the box for my GX60.

Looking back over things im pretty worried on reflection about the amount of gloss plastic around the screen bezel, from a distraction due to reflections and ease of cleaning without marking it and hence making it even more distracting point of view also. How distracting have you all found the glossy stuff around/near the screen, and how prone to getting marked have you found it when wiping the inevitable fingerprints off it etc ?

So i played a little bit of gw2 on gx60 if you max everything out except native instead of super sampling if your not in the busy areas its find you sit around 30fps and in battles can drop to 20fps. I lowered shadows and reflection to terrain not all and was getting from 60-30 fps nicely with music in the background playing. However when you are in the battles in wvw and theres lots of skills going off you drop right down to like 10. I havent had the chance to really mess with it enough to see what settings you need to make it not drop so much. Also i havent downloaded the drivers from amd or anything yet just used the ones installed on laptop already.

    MSI GX60-1AC-021US AMD7970M 2GB GDDR5 Windows 8

You have to select the SSD and you are obviously going to pay for it. I recommend doing what I am and buying it with a normal platter drive or no drive at all, and just picking up a 240GB Corsair Neutron GTX for about $200 and doing a straight image that way. You're going to end up with a slower more expensive SSD no matter what you buy if you are doing anything but buying and installing yourself. Though I'm almost certain that if I had emailed Ken and told him I wanted him to buy and install a specific drive, for the right price it could be done.

I got mine from Gentech, and the turnaround time for my custom build was one day, and they are also one of the very limited places that has the GX60 in stock. Just tossing that out there ;)

The M4 still uses asynchronous nand though doesn't it? Toggle nand is faster and better (see: every SSD with a slow and fast version ever - OCZ Max IOPS, Corsair Neutron and Neutron GTX, etc). I got a mSATA drive RMA'd from newegg because it was advertised with Toshiba Toggle and came with crappy Micron Asynchronous. For a 2xxGB class drive, that's a $30-$50 difference in price based on that one spec.

Also, are the M4's still having that problem with the high failure rate?

I ended up picking the Corsair Neutron GTX because I don't have to worry about the Sandforce compatibility issues (nothing against Sandforce, love the speed, but the undiagnosable bluescreening issue worries me, with my bad luck), has Toshiba toggle, and is blindingly fast. Thank heavens the GX60 has two hard drive bays - did I hear rumors I could use those two bays in raid 0 mode? Would I get the full insane-speed with two SSDs as I would from the overseas version of the GX60 with super raid?

Guild Wars 2 is one of the main reasons for upgrading my system and therefore one of the main games I want to play on the GX60 so this is not all that good feedback to hear to be honest.

Hearing this combined with my recent post in this thread re: hindsight concerns over glossy screen bezel makes me wonder about the GX60 being a good idea.I did buy from Amazon and ant actually opened it yet for various reasons.. maybe that's a good thing.

Would be really really interested in hearing what happens with new display drivers though.. GW2 likes new drivers in my experience they can make a hell of a difference ..

Well I was able to get 20+fps in GW2 even in the heat of battle of WVW with all the skills and arrow cards and explosions going off by turning the animation/ environment and distance down to medium everything else on high. Which isn't too bad considering when there is that much going on its going to bog down even good desktop rigs. If you are playing in a small group you can easily have almost everything on max settings and get good fps. I did go to the beta drivers too for the graphics card.

    Folks check this out:

    AMD CATALYST

This hotfix for Enduro has all the benefits of 12.11 drivers, but switchable graphics settings ALSO work! (unlike on other general 12.11 beta driver editions witch make this section of settings crash upon click in CCC)
