I did a clean wipe, advanced, deleted every partition and selected the whole disc.

It would have saved me some files if you would told me that I need to format the whole drive first. I did a cleanup in cmd and converted the drive from GPT to MBR, then was able to install Windows 7. All good now, beside some lost photos.

I am highly considering buying this laptop, however reliability upon arrivan and lifespan are a must to me.
Im really confused as I see alot of negative feedback on the 7970m and some negative comments on the MSI's build, what can you guys tell me about this? here I made a thread where Im pondering betwen this and a sager, I would appreciate all feedback:

Any1 tried to disable powernow in the bios ? I tried to disable it but i could get into windows anymore, continues reboots ...
-
Honestly, not trying to be bias here, GX 60 will give you the best bang for the buck.
Especially with the new 13.1 driver, this thing flies in most games. ALSO, this is the BEEEST laptop speaker I EVER heard, I can't imagine how our siblings the GT series with Dynaudio would be. -
Yeah I will also say that the Audio in this machine is crazy, the strongest and clearest audio I've ever heard from a laptop. Its just as powerful as our 2.1 system for the 60" LED TV.
It also has the possibility in the future with hope from AMD to have a better CPU in the machine. Aside from that its a great machine I've had no complaints except that I miss the media controls that the GX740 had but that's a personal thing I have to get use to.
If you plan to run Win7 A few of the FN buttons dont work and a few of the buttons up top like wifi, screen switch, cd eject. Though I dont run any MSI branded software like S-bar or whatever that might help it to work.
The best way to figure things out is just go by 3dmark11 scores of the three laptops you're looking at.
As for the build quality this laptop seems to be a bit more rigid compared to my GX740 which wasn't that well built.
MSI warranty is pretty good I had a crack on my LCD case of the GX740 and they replaced the whole thing.
I will say this though they dont seem to listen to multiple request because I just got my GX740 back and I gotta send it in again there paying for it though. -
Thanks for the input guys, still Im concerned as I see alot of people having issues with their 7970m gpu, or is it only on the sager models?
Im also wondering how likely is it for this product to come DOA? I've stumbled upon mixed reviews and to me is extremely important for it to come working well as sending stuff back and forth it's really a huge issue to me.
Im also wondering: what's the average lifespan of these kind of laptops?
Thanks in advance guys
-
I'm actually not sure what kind of issues people are having....
if you're talking about Enduro, it was solved longggg time ago, in fact I never had any issues with Enduro or the drivers at all since the beginning. I do have to say one thing bothering me is the brightness control.. = =
From this GX 60 owner's thread, I don't think any single one of us got a DOA, personally my hinge issue was resolved by pinching the piece together with my own hand ( instructed by my reseller).
As for lifespan I really don't know... this is my first higher end laptop. But what I do know is that with the MXM GPU, you can definitely switch out the GPU in the future (modification might be needed), and as for CPU we are all crossing our fingers. =\ -
For the Windows7 users: How did you resolve the drivers issue with the USB 3.0 slots ? Did a screenshot of my Device Manager, there seem to be 5 missing drivers: http://i.imgur.com/xFML8zl.jpg
-
Im in a sort of problem, I don't know wich's the best combination for autoCad, cs6 suite and some gaming performannce:
i7, 660M, 8gb (NP6350)
or
A4600, 7970M, 8gb (GX60)
Any suggestion?
Thnx! -
Is it really so hard to look for AMD chipset drivers?

I was in the same boat as you a few weeks ago. I did all kinds of research for a laptop in the $1K area and there were a few others I was considering but none seemed to have the graphics grunt this one does. I almost went with the Sager as well, but some friends a few years ago purchased some MSI gaming laptops and I was impressed with the performance, build quality and the bang for the buck. Intel i7 laptops might be a bit snappier but for this price point you can't beat this machine. I would say the biggest gripe I have is the HDD speed (vs SSD) and brightness cannot be adjusted with non MSI VGA drivers. Both these issues are correctable. You will be happy with the GX60.

Saw a post today about the new desktop apu's having the same socket (fm2?) As trinity. So i think there is a good chance that the mobile richland apu can be put into the gx60. Having high hopes here!
-
hey there
I'm a proud new owner of this beast of a laptop, so here I am to welcome myself...
Stupidness besides, admit i've read most of the 81 pages. I know most about SSD installation, drivers issues, OS, enduro and all that stuff, but I was really wondering a single question
What should I do first on first start?
I know it could sound dumb. I mean in terms of what exact drivers should i update, programs i should install to get the best performance/admin of the resources, and all those things kinda " woah, if only I knew this before".
I think could be helpful for nerdy newbies as me.
After that we should return to the socket discussion.
Thanks in advance!! -
My roommate has the dynaudio in his GT780 and it's the same - he just has different speaker grilles.
-
So I decided to go nuts and take it all apart last night, learned a decent bit. The Keyboard LED headers are there, and the MSI back-light controls install and work fine. I'm going to pop my roommates GT780 keyboard off and see if the headers are live tonight, and if so I'm ordering a GT60 back-lit keyboard from MSI (confirmed with MSI, we can order these direct). The "foil-mod" definitely applies here, there are cooling gaps that I fixed with - of all things - the non-conductive silvery-looking tape out of a 500GB Seagate external HDD that I scrapped last night. I'm seeing a 1-2 degree temp drop across the board under load, there's 2 more gaps I have to do and I'll update with more. I got the two outer ones, with the biggest gappage. The other two are in the corner right next to each other.
As far as build quality, these aren't the janky whitebooks of yesteryear (I have one of those), they are built solid (the bottom case cover that cracks so easily has a metal liner, the hinges are beefy, the chassis is rigid and solid, etc). The sound is phenomenal with the built in subwoofer.
Screen switch used to just turn off the monitor (even with external HDMI attached) but now does nothing, but registers as a button press, same with eject - registers but does nothing, and I feel like that used to work too. After parting it out last night my wifi-switch light no longer lights up - which I like since I don't like orange and the button didn't work anyway in windows 7. I'll revisit the wifi-light after I swap keyboards tonight, I'm not concerned, wifi (obviously) still works and I think I just didn't seat the ribbon cable all the way when I put it back on. -
well there was a guy who got his without the dedicated graphic card, that's quite nasty
Anyone else has any idea regarding lifespan? -

If the rest of the MSI machines based off the same shell are anything to go by then so long as you don't bash it around it should last years.
-
The 660m is sucking pond water compared to the 7970M for gaming and if youe cad/cs supports GPGPU acceleration, but the i7 (guessing 3620qm) overpowers the A10-4600M in strictly processor based tasks, that do not use any form of GPU acceleration. That said the A10-4600M alone is crazy powerful for gaming, with 13.1 drivers I would be surprised if it wasn't at least in the same ballpark as the 660M.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's a level down from the 660M especially when it has GDDR5.
-
That guy is an exception lol, he got trolled by msi, in fact I'm not sure what really happened, not sure if he brought it back
-
man I was all set to get a sager np9170, saw this notebook and was like hmm still better than my pc I use to game. Cheaper therefore can get it, toss a 256gb plextor ssd in it, get a razer orochi + kabuto, and get bunch of games.
if go other routes would limit getting any extras or none at all, which I need to take in account because well I do want some of these extras..plus every video of gameplay on it on you tube shows it runs just fine for me...seems like a great deal..now just to wait on the irs to do its job... -
Could you maybe make an noob tutorial for the LED keyboard replacement while you are working on it (with pictures
) ? I want one too, but am a chicken to do it without a tutorial.
-
There is a video of how to take apart the keyboard for gt 60 over at the gt 60 owner's thread, gt60's build is pretty much identical to the gx60
-
I recall reading a review in the last couple of weeks - read a lot so I'm not sure which site produced it - where they compared the performance of the 680M vs the 7970M, and when it came to AutoCAD...the 680M sucked. The 7970M stomped the nVidia card in to the ground (double the performance or more, from memory) because apparently, when it comes to mobile GPUs, nVidia doesn't care one bit about making theirs work well for non-gaming purposes.
While the 680M may beat the 7970M in some benchmarks, when taking non-gaming performance in to account the 7970M is clearly the superior card by a long way, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper too.
I know your original question was about the 660M, but given the 680M is a long way ahead of the 660M, well...I think you can draw your own conclusions there. -
Will the unlocked BIOS help with my PSCheck problems? And if so, can anyone post a download link if that's possible?

There is a large performance hit incurred including compute orientated units in your GPU, extra transistors that provide no benefit for a normal user.
The original plan seems to have been go all out with GK100 and release GK104 as a gaming orientated GPU. One issue being that GK100 was non-manufacturable in any reasonable quantity and was never going to be suitable for mobile use.
So GK104 is stripped mostly clean in high precision units, they don't exist on the chip so there is nothing for a quadro to activate.
It remains to be seen if the refresh will bring a compute orientated mid range chip along with GK110 but it would be very niche as most would want to stick with the gaming chip for lower cost and higher performance and lower power consumption. -
So guys, Is there any chance to get our cpus up to 3.2ghz as the beautiful advertisment said?
-
it does jump up to 3.2ghz time to time, but only on program that utilizes single core. On multi-core programs max is 2.7ghz, however I notice for any stress test program such as wprime, my cores only locks at 2.3, in fact it starts off at 2.69 then slowly drops down and locks at 2.3
-
Thanks @monolm and @sublime
As for the notebook, I'm thinking of spending a bit more and go for 7970 with the i7, in other words, NP9150. I think it can hold normally 2 years.
Will se what happens on february. -
I'll snap some pics when I try the swap, it's basically going to be a test fit for now until I actually order one. Putting it on hold for tonight, pounding headache and aspirin aren't helping, so I'm thinking tomorrow mid-day hopefully. My primary goal is to find out if the headers are even live.
-
Seems about right. I'm still blown away by how beefy it is for an "integrated" card. Thinks like the Xi3 Piston (rumored steambox), PS4, etc running on the AMD APU platform are seeming more and more feasible by the day.
Though after a quick Google, they seem to no longer be using the A8 and are now with a Bulldozer 8 core.
The PlayStation 4 Has A New Controller, Fancy User Accounts And Impressive Specs (So Far) -
today my laptop arrived. I've tried dead island and runs quite awesome. Such a deal.
I updated to catalyst 13.1 via amd's driver recognision tool, didn't get the brightness issue... Not sure if common but fine anyway. -
The brightness issue may be some other conflict. Maybe a certain network driver or WOL, or USB items, it could be anything.
-
Anyone having WIFI issues with Win 7, I used the drivers provided on the website but they dont work I believe I had to go find the right drivers. Anyways My Wifi seems to DC from its network every few hours or so and it wont connect to anything else unless I disabled and re-enable it. Sometimes I gotta do it multiple times for it to work again anyone know a fix?
-
I have placed my order on Gentech now
-
I am getting very annoyed by the brightness issue.....
Not that the brightness issue that's bothering me, heck, if everyone that has Win 8 and have this same issue then it'll be fine.
BUT, right now out of everyone with Win 8, there are about 20% of the people that DO NOT have this issue with the new drivers...WHY!!!??!?
I Googled my butt off finding solutions, NO LUCK... I even called MSI today regarding this issue, they say this is problem with AMD (which I know, but was hoping they have a solution), sadly the only thing they could recommend is downloading the driver from their website, which is the 12.10....
WARNING: just a heads up, DO NOT use driver sweeper on WIN 8...... you'll end up with an unlimited reboot, lucky I was able to go into safe mode... almost had to reinstall windows.. >.< -

Have you tried the Windows 7 10.0.0.221 driver version?
Drivers for Atheros AR1111 and Windows 7
Windows 8 10.0.0.221 driver
Drivers for Atheros AR1111 and Windows 8
Probably the same driver for both W7 & W8 -
Did you get the stock wireless card or a upgraded one... I made that mistake and had to fire up another computer to get drivers for my upgraded Killer 1203...
-
Im gonna try it now for Win7, I didnt upgrade my WIFI card just used the drivers from MSI but hopefully these work.
Cheers! -
I just noticed among the details on the gentech pc site that the HDMI port says: HDMI 1.4, 60Hz/120Hz output 1080P, 3D Ready
can anyone tell me how is this 3D ready feature? I mean Im sure the display is not 3D but does this means if I plug it on a 3D compatible TV/monitor I can stream 3D content to it?
to be honest I just noticed it, I wasn't aware of it until now. -
Correct. The screen is not 3D, the HDMI 1.4a port supports 3D TV / Monitor at 1080P 24hz /eye or 720P 60hz/eye.

A Killer 1203????
I use this same Atheros driver for an 1103 on windows 8 Pro.I find the performance of the card better than with the W8 driver from Killergaming.com
I don't own a GX60 only trying to help with driver info. -
Ok, I got my GX60 back from RMA.
Just like I thought - it was powerbrick problem, namely my powerbrick suddenly died. Now it got replaced with a new one.
I see that they unscrewed the GX60 to check, if there was a inside circuit hardware problem ect.
I hope that now GX60 will work fine
Time to test those 13.1 WHQL drivers with PSCheck forced on 2.7 ghz.
*on a side note - can someone endorse CPU stress testing program? I want to see how much I can undervolt A-10 while on forced turbo with 2.7 ghz. Default voltage I get from PSCheck is 1.100 V on each core, I would like to see if I could lower the voltage to say 1.050 V and run stable whilst that. -
Wifi card is still ed every 5-6 hours It loses connection to the wifi router, I have two routers setup and it wont connect to either or any other network.
I have to disabled the card, connect to a network then it drops signal after 10seconds and I have to disable and re-enable again.
This is my 2nd laptop from MSI and there really starting to me off, I wanted nothing but to endorse this amazing laptop but its pissing me off with these errors and application stopped responding errors.
I've done all the test known to man and all my hardware comes back clean, I've re-installed windows 4 times and still no fix.
Ive sent my GX740 to MSI for RMA 2 times now and both times its come back more broken then it left....Im really starting to second guess MSI forever!
Anyways if anyone can help me solve this wifi problem thank you! -
This could be a hardware issue...bad soldering job/bad connector ? I'm just guessing here.

Stock wireless cards are generally low end so advertized prices can be kept low.
Make sure you uncheck the" turn off to save power" in the wireless card power management in Device Manager>Network Adapters
MSI is putting the Killer 1202 as the stock wireless card in some models. This is a very good move.
I've had connection issues with wireless cards that were the stock cards is a few notebooks that I have purchased even though my router and Internet service is top of the line. They were Realteks and single band 150Mbps Intel. An Atheros AR9285 was a dog.
The stock wireless cards are usually very easy to swap out for a higher quality card but adding a 3rd antenna inside the lcd housing is a bit more work if installing an Intel 6300 or Killer 1103 and you want the best connectivity.
All wireless cards are not created equal.
The easiest swapping is putting in a better 2 antenna card that's dual band and 300Mbps like the Killer 1202 or Intel 6235
In wireless networking there's nothing guaranteed.
The router and wireless card needs to be configured correctly.Distance, walls, floors, cordless phones, microwaves, bluetooth signals, channel, channel width,Internet Service and large metal objects are just some of the things that can effect your wireless connection.
Your router should be set to WPA2 AES security to perform best in W7 and W8.
Use port forwarding to open ports for torrenting and online gaming.
I suggest installing the free inSSIDer program to select the best channel and to monitor your connection strength.
Start out with the notebook in the room with the router to monitor your connection strength then walk around your location with the notebook in hand to find the best connection strength locations and the worst ones.
My Killer 1103 with 3rd antenna has never suffered a disconnection in Windows 7 x64 with 4 different dual band Netgear router and this MSI notebook is 10 meters from the R6300 router and has 2 cement walls inbetween.
I've owned a few different MSI notebooks without any hardware issues. -
Yeah I dont know if its my ty luck or what, but I also get problems the GX740 was my first MSI and it was fine for the first 2 years then it started to go.
Anywys Ive never had wifi problems with a notebook no matter how bad a stock card is, I mean its kinda unfair that every few hours sometimes every 2 hours I have to disable and re-enable the card.
Anyways I gotta ship this GX740 back and if it returns in working order I guess ill ship this GX60 back to MSI also.
Never ending cycle of RMA's !!!! -
I had something similar happen to an old laptop, almsot exactly the same issue, has to disable restart, enable and in a certain way for it to work, then it would stop working a few hours later. Here is what I suggest, try a USB WiFi adapter, like $10 for a cheap one. Install it and watch the same thing happen, which will prove its not a WiFi adapter problem. I never did figure out that old laptop, didnt try too hard or reload windows because I already had a new laptop. It could have been a Windows issue or an application software conflict. I don't know. If you reloaded Windows, maybe its not properly recognizing something in the chipset or you need to load motherboard drivers, or maybe a BIOS issue?
Does your GX60 get really hot, or you use it on a bed or blanket or something like that?
