batmeat that may be your only option dude, it sucks to hear that buut, thats the luck of the draw sometimes, what id say is to possibly reflash to your older bios if possible, but the next best thing is to try and use memtest x86 and run the tests, i forget which option it is but itll stress your cpu and memory and basically push it to its full potential and tell you if its the processor or the ram possibly, if that wont even work then yes its a big problem, otherwise you can try a tool like mhdd which will run through your hard drive and sata controllers and check for problems there, (all bootable from the cd =] ). Give em a googlesearch and see what you can get. Otherwise dude for what you prolly picked it up for, id say just prolly keep it for the extra parts, these notebooks are selling like hotcakes and are prolly best to keep for replacement parts, or at least the extra batters 17'' lcd screen laptops with high performance gfx cards dont like batteries, especially 6 cells unfortunately ( you msi, why.....) and you can figure a nice lcd like these fetch at least 125, the battery 50-60, the gfx card (lots), and misc components. Even if mine died, knock on wood, id keep the parts and get another, got a sweet deal $400 flat for an ID2 (YAY MEE).

And Speaking of Arctic Silver, yes its on there now and temps are quite nice, my computer seems to like it better than the waxy stuff Msi gives us, games stress it nicely, haven't gotten rivatuner on yet so i cant monitor temps ingame but i promise those soon, idling while typing its sitting at a cool 40c/43c/54c, (core0/1/core ambient) which is a very nice temp for a throttled fan, and mind you my processor is a tad bit angrier than those nice t9's and p8's most of you gents are rolling with. and for the gpu temps are staying cool idling at 54c. Id say the biggest thing i like about my arctic setup is the Arctic-Clean stuff that I got again this time around, it takes the waxy crud off very nicely and quickly might i add, leaving you with a nice shiny core to throw some as5 on. i left the thermal pad on the northbridge, as its doesnt really get hot.

Also i can add my testament of gskill's 4gb kit to the rest, as working really nicely in my machine, xp unfortunately, as well known, detects only 3gb, which is fine by me, and i guarantee ill snag win7 as soon as it hits the shelf, timings of this ram are actually really nice for 800 speed running a little bit faster than normal, though you wont really notice it, 5/5/5/13.

As a last and significantly worrying/annoying thing that i noticed about this laptop, mind you I am a CFM nazi, is that the intake for the fan, which is a blower, is nearly being choked by the intake on the bottom of the laptop, which is "D" shaped, using only Half of the possible area for an intake, I'm tempted to dremel it out and add some intake to the cooler.

Also, the p1 key, anyone know how to program this in xp? all the drivers on my disk are for vista, and not very helpful, as well i can confirm the eco button doesnt really work on my laptop in xp.

Hello I just bought one of these put in a 320g HD 4g of ram T9600 seem's to get stuck on a black screen saying Press Tab to Post or Del to go to bios. I have gotten it to go to the next screen and it say's all the info on my T9600 and my 4gigs but I can not go past that spot. Pressing F11 and F12 do nothing at all. I don't have any other processor for a laptop ( First laptop ) is there another way to update the bios or what should I try? I have the black and gray one w/o the turbo option.

Well, it recognise your cpu so there is no need to flash your bios at this point.
    Maybe start installing an OS?
If you still want to flash your bios and firmaware, you can use zfactor's guide
of making a bootdisk off a usbstick: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=246530
and put the bios/ firmware on the drive and go from there.

Yes I've pressed F11 and F12 neither will do a thing. Like I typed before it seem's to be stuck their :( So what would be a cheap one that would work anyone know ? I really don't want to spend alot more on a CPU just to swich it out after.

Button right under the power button. Should be green.

Make sure there isn't an exclamation mark in devices or it is an HP/IBM only card.

Yeah, I'm a bit jaded atm ordering overseas.

    My last 4 purchases:

I ordered a 5100 OEM....seller (China) said it wasn't an ES....yup, an ES. Works fine, but that's not the point. At $20, it would cost more to send it back (which is required for a refund) than not.

Ordered 2x 5350's.....both were supposed to be non HP/Lenovo (IBM), yup, one of them was the wrong card (Hong Kong). Seller was very apologetic. Sent it back, and seller is going to credit me the cost of S&H and ship me a new one.

Ordered a QX9300 overseas, chip arrived with bent pins and poorly packed (small envelope and chip in anti-static bag. NO protection what so ever (Ireland).....

Ordered a few 1722's....one shows up DOA (Hawaii...ok, this one just isn't continental USA). Shipping it back is ~$30 which I won't get back.

Problem with it is the S&H costs to return them and wait times can be massive.

electro, sounds like youre gettin screwed hardcore.

As for wireless cards i have another option outside of the 53 series, i can safely confirm that my intel 3495ABG wifi card works without a hiccup in my 1722, (it was a gank from my gateway). so i assume any gateway wifi cards shouldnt have the problem, or at least this leads me to believe.

As for shipping and stuff, i hear ya dude, i live on a military base overseas so getting people to ship here first is retarded, secondly if somethings broken, i have some pretty meaty shipping costs to send stuff back. Not to mention the retardedly long ship time (took a month and 7 days for my computer to get here from colorado). And now that its here i find my 8800GTS has been bouncin around in my case and its cap is all jacked up so i may have an interesting battle trying to get a refund on that, (i really don't like shipping insurance anymore, the hastles retarded (been arguing with UPS for 6 months about a ps3 that was damaged in shipping.)

Ok, quick question. I've got a MSI 1722 barebones coming in the mail in a few days. I want to order the following 1.8" Samsung SSD which is SLC and is the same drive as the 500 dollar OCZ and G.skill/samsung 2.5 inch.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147056

I have a converter that switches it from mini sata to regular sata connector, but the problem is the drive will probably be loose in the drive bay on the laptop, right? So is there any way around this, any comments on that? Also, does the MSI 1722 have a 3.3v powered sata internally? I assume yes. (It's part of the spec for sata, but some mfg skimp).

Great find, although out of stock until late april. Maybe I'll just buy the SSD for now and get the adapter later. Hard to pass up the Samsung 64gb SSD SLC when it just rapes every other drive less then $500 in price. I bought the crucial 64gb SSD SLC for about $10 more then the Samsung and it has a 5 year warranty, only problem is from what I've read the 32gb samsung of the same type has horrible write performance (basically it doesn't perform like an SLC even though it is one). Trying to get the egg to cancel that order.

    Can bios 1.0 N run QX 9300?

    Vista installs ok.
But at final reboot (vista installation)
Windows loading screen keeps on running endless.

Starting in safe mode it freezes at crcdisk.sys

Tried both 32 & 64 bit Vista and had same problem.

XP wouldn't even install: blue screen error

Isn't there a way to update bios with the qx9300 installed? since I dont have another socket P cpu.

    Thnx in advance

    Setup:
    MSI 17221 ID2
    2 x 2 GB OCZ PC6400
    WD 320 Scorpio
    Intel 5300

It updates fine. I updated a 1722 ID2 with the newest (1.0S) Bios with a QX9300 installed from the stock 1.0N it is delivered with via a USB flash drive and then the firmware to the newest (4.29) and Vista installed just fine.

The first link on my initial post here is to the ID2 BIOS 1.0S.

Edit: Updated links on main page to various BIOS/Firmwares, since the old links were broken.

KWAKTWAN - I get exactly the same problem as you with Vista. I think it is the AHCI driver causing the problem. I then tried Win7 and it installed fine.

Try switching off AHCI in BIOS and installing XP, that should stop the blue screen

The 1722 ID2 Barebones, while functionally the same as the GT725 and GX720, has a different bezel for accessing the buttons across the top.

Make sure to update the BIOS and Firmware (Page 1).

lix yes i have gotten all speaks working, though i must say the quality is pretty terrible, you're not really missing much, if you're having an issue getting em to work goto the realtek site and download the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers, as for getting all speakers to work, i believe its just a matter of running the realtek audio control panel and setting your speakers to 4channel or higher, mine work fine, though i cant say i really use my laptop speakers too much when i have a bangin sound system next to me (2 satellites, and dual subs 8in 120w/12in 220w)...

I will say that realtek is doin well with their sound quality on their hardware, i just wish msi would have put some speakers with a bit more oomph into a laptop that deserves it this much.

Ey guys! Here are the pictures of my 1722 and some system information. I would love to hear from the 1722 Guru's what they think about my notebook.

    Cover

    Layout 1

    Layout 2

    Panel Buttons
    Eco Button
Turbo/OC Button(looks like the IE icon)
    Web Cam
    Bluetooth
    Wifi

    3DMark non OC

    3DMark OC'd

    WoW FPS Window Mode

Ok here's where the guru's could help out most.

As you can on this SS the system info detects I have 4Gb of RAM even though I'm running a 32-bit OS. Then when you look at the CPUZ and DxDiag, it doesn't say the same.
System Info 1 (btw this isn't on OC)

Ok, next would be my GPU. As we all know 1722's comes with GF9600m GT which is 512mb. If you look at my SS, you'll see it says 1799mb. Is that fine? Should I bring it down to 512mb? If so, how?
    System Info 2

This SS is when the system is on "turbo mode" if you can see, the core speed only increased by 300. Should it be that way? Why doesn't the system info pick up the OC speed of the processor?
    System Info 3

the only think i can think of for the graphics is that some sort of turbomemory is enabled, though my expertise with vista is a bit limited, id say first of all ditch the oem drivers and grab the latest from nvidia, thatll prolly fix alot of , as well as add nvidias new physx crap which i turned off after i figured out its crap, but the new drivers should (as they always do) increase performance and prolly remove the gfx crap. If anything man check the nvidia control panel for info, its possible that 3dmark is just having a case of the retards for whatever reason.

an interesting note to add to those who are curious about the turbo button and xp, they dont mix very well, as i have upgraded to the latest, and i can say that at least with my processor, they dont like each other very well, i pressed the button and lost all control of my laptop, usb, touchbar, trackpad, everything execpt the power button, and i had to restart. so the moral of the story is, be careful with that button on the newest firmware, thankfully nothings too angry

acutally now that i think about it, theres a pretty good chance that since you are running the 32 bit version that it may be messing with the ram count, i recall something about 32 bit versions only being able to detect certain amounts of ram. try running a program like photoshop that accesses the ram directly, it should be able to let you know what the deal is, or for that matter dont freak cause one program says something different, try a couple and let them check what the ram is. =]

32-Bit XP and Vista can both address up to a total of 4gb of memory. That includes Video memory and any other componants that have memory.

Vista 32 use to tell you how much addressable ram there was and I believe one of the updates a while ago changed the way it reports it to how much you actually have. As for the video card memory reported by DX, that's just how much memory your video card will work with when you play games. You physically have 512Mb of ram but DX will also use your motherboard memory as well.

So for your 4Gb of memory in your system, Vista 32 will not address part of that ram if your other componants use memory as well. The video card has 512mb of ram on it already, so that brings your addressable memory for you RAM to 3.5gb. Some sound cards have memory as well, such as some high-end X-Fi cards with 64mb of ram, will also knock it down. If you own Vista 32 Home premium or business, you can order a 64-bit version cheap and if you own Ultimate if should have come with one already. OEM versions don't qualify and you need to buy a new license.

If you use a 64-bit version of Windows, you will be able to use everything. There is a list of limits with each version of Windows somewhere on the net.

Yeah as far as I know, 32-bit systems only reads 3gig of ram. If you want the system to read more than that, you need a 64-bit OS. I asked the guys who set this up for me and he said about the bios update. 1.0S.

You can always utilise those unused 1GB memory as ramdisk for things like cache, pagefile, IE/firefox temp file.

I used "Gavotte Ramdisk" to setup mine

Here's Microsoft article about why it's like that. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us

Basically means, that the 32-bit system has to work with a 4 gig total of memory space and in order to utilize your video card or any other componant memory, it has to be mapped into that space. That's why it doesn't use your whole 4 gigs of RAM. It's a limitation of the 32-bit system.

64-bit versions of windows can handle between 8 to 127 gigs of RAM depending on which version you have.

Here is a link for how to tweak your 32 bit OS to use 4Gb memory. It's for advanced users though. Never try it, because I have 64 bit OS. If somebody tries it please write results. I'll be glad to know is it working?

    Hi, all!
I have to ask something about this laptop. Is there a driver for the LCD? Yesterday I've noticed that the screen is flicking, I didn't notice it before, I don't know is it like that or appeared lately. Checked the refresh rate and it is set to 59Hz. I can't change it due to it's using default mictosoft driver. Somebody knows what driver it needs, or what is the LCD to check for a driver? Thanks!

genna try a different bios version, after flashing to latest, my monitor was detected as well as some other random pci bridges, im using latest firmware and 1.0s now. as for drivers try downloading newest driver from nvidia website, that should help, its a beta, just remember to disable nvidias stupid physx knockoff, it rapes your gpu performance and should only be used for dualgpus.

also can i get a list of peoples peak temps for their gpus, i'm kinda spooked that my gpu is reaching upwards of 80c on load, and has steadily increased from the temp that it was before, anyone else getting temps that high on their gpu? it seems that eve is the one game that stresses it the most strangely enough, as cs, lostplanet, and bf2142 dont seem to get it up that high usually thresholds at about 70c or so, but it seems eve goes the extra mile getting it up to 80 where it peaks. the temp readings im using are with rivatuner, a program i highly suggest to those who are curious about watching their gpu temps, as well as how much gddr is actually being used for renderning. as well as many other things.

    automatikjack,
well I'm using latest of everything - EC - 4.29; BIOS - 1.0S and nVidia 179.48 Vista x64 Beta. Just where is this physix thing you talk about. I'm kind a new to nVidia GPUs (ATI fan :)). any other suggestions? :)
About your quetion for the highest GPU temperature - mine I saw it ones it was 83C (this is after I've OCed it - see GPU link in my sigature for info) - this was highest ever seen. I was playing Crysis for 4 or more hours. I think this temperature is fine, because if you see BIOS settings the card is set to turn off @ 105C. Ofcourse I changed this value, because it seemed to me very high, I reduced it to 95C.

Auto I tried to use nTUne and my settings where 630/1085 ran it with 3dMark06 for hours and got a score of 6k+ using a t9400. Played Assassin's Creed and check the temp. highest was 83. Then after that I saw artifacts while playing so reset the setting to it's stock.

By the way I used HWmonitor / nTune Monitor to check the temps.

    @ACID
Check what % of batter life do you have. I think it's a feature, when it get's fully charged it would stop charging even though it's plugged in. It will start to charge again when it reaches a certain amount of battery life. I tried to unplug mine and let it reach 94% and when I plugged it in, it started charging again.

It's like with the charger of cellphones now. They stop when it reaches full so the battery won't be over charged.

thx xen and genna, i suspected that this gpu just runs hot like the 8 series, id like to find a way to control the fanspeed of the blower so i could keep things cool, i really dont like cool and quiet, id rather max fans and keep things nice and chill. good to know for temp information. Anyone else who clocks their cards higher lemme know i'm curious of performance, though as previously stated i dont like how that one ddr3 module is half naked.

Acid, what do you mean, as in a blinking light indicating no charge, if thats the case man then its possible that you just got a bum battery dude, it sucks but that happens, the same as any other component, just hope that it isnt the computer itself. googlesearch the battery model number, you can get batteries, either 6 or 9 cell, 6 is the standard. if you can find a pinout diagram you can test it with a voltmeter to see if its even alive at all, but ONLY if you get the pinouts, shorting LIion batterys is a bad idea. its also possible that the acpi is messed up somehow, try a reinstall, im sure that somewhere theres an article about that, i think i had it happen before, or try battery doubler or notebook hardware monitor, check and see if they actually see the battery at all. thats a good indicator if your batterys just a dud. good luck man.
