    @ Gina

Try to reset your GPU and test if the flickering still continues. If not I'll try to find a solution for it. :)

alright so who has payed with the ctrl-alt-insert combo, and what results have they gotten? So far what ive noticed which is helpful for those few thats tweak their machines certain ways, is with 1.0s you can change your ddr speeds (667/800/auto) is what ive seen so far.

the main thing that im curious about is gpu powersaving, theres a pci-express powersaving option that im tempted to play with, has anyone tried this or any of the other options in the northbridge/southbridge?

yes it should work for everyone i know 1.0n supports it as well as 1.0s, its a bios option, basically anytime after entering the bios, hit those keys and itll unlock a special set of items on one of the pages, its got alot of great tools and items for tweaking the laptop, check it out, lots of interesting stuff to do in there.

Nope it's not working for all, it's only working when you are using the MSI BIOS and not when using the barebone BIOS.

The ctrl+alt+ins works just fine on the barebones bios I used it even before I flashed to the new 1.0s version.

Actually i hate to break it to you reparou but it actually works with ID2's also with factory bios, mine is living proof. Shipped with 1.0N and that dandy lil trick worked. My 1722 is probably closer to the gx720 in all reality than the others, ie the colors, and the overclocking button, all that good stuff. i will be grabbing a copy of vista today and prolly will install it sometime soon to confirm the overclocking feature functionality, as well as playing with my full 4gbs of ram.

Correct BIOS 1.0N barebone version is with OC function after CTRL-ALT-INS, but OC will only work when you have the touch panel with OC button.
Then please be informed when you update the BIOS is will remove the OC function from the BIOS.

So Automatikjack the info you placed is correct, thx for pointing.

Just to fill with some more info. I have same ID2 and the OC button is not hidden. After reflashing with the latest firmware for it -> 4.29, the internet explorer button becomes OC button.
I'll check this Ctrl+Alt+Ins combination is it reveal even more OC options or everybody is wrong :) and it is the same as Alt+Ins combination.

Which one did you buy? Most mini-pci cards will work, but you may have bought one made for HP/IBM only which will install, but you get an exclamation in device driver.

Also, make sure you turned it on via the Wi-Fi button. :)

If you use Vista update it to SP1. It will see all 4Gb of memory, but you will still be able to use only 3Gb. If you want to use all of them you must put x64 bit OS.
If you use Win XP udate it to SP3, but it will be the same as with Vista.

    Hi,
as I changed the Bois and the Firmware acc. to the fact that my camera did not work. Fine, the camera works now :) but now the P1 (personal program bottun right above the camera button does not work.

Before the Bios and Firmware change this button stated the Web-Browser - in my case Firefox, even without having installed any System Control Manager (SCM). But now - with the right B&F and with the installed SCM (the icons of Camera, WLAN, Bluetootth, .. appear) I can't get the P1-button to work. If I press it a little window with thress sections pops up telling me (in german, my translation):
    +---------
    | Please enter the program to open (or start?)
    |
    +----------
    | Open (or Start?) the actual program (button: Cancel)
    |
    +-------
    | Choose program to open and cklick "OK" (buttons: Delete OK Cancel)
    |
    +------

But there is no option to enter anything and if I start a program - hoping SCM will recognize this - nothing is changed.
So P1 now doesn't do anything and I can't configure it? Is there a file (path?) where I might enter the program to start

I have installed Windows 7 beta 64 bit - could this be the reason? But I can set to run programs compatible with Vista, XP, 2000, .. which doesn't do it either.

Anybody here, whw knows the trick?
    But

    just solved it.
I pressed the button saying (in german Abbrechen which means =>) Cancel and a tiny filemanager opens and let me choose the program I want to start.
    So I think its only a translation-problem.

In english, do you see cancel or choose or what?

    Thanks in advance, Carl

Yeah, I encountered the exact same thing, but with a 5350. I ordered two. One was right (Toshiba issued), and the other was an HP/IBM, so I shipped it back and got a replacement sent.

If the auction didn't list it as HP/IBM and it is their fault, have them send you a swap.

you also need to make sure normally when flashing a bios that the himem manager files are not included. this can prevent a lot of bios' from flashing properly

i have a few realtek g cards kushy if interested. if you are in the usa 12$ mailed to you first class in a bubble envelope. these work great if you only need g.

The msi recorder software doesn't record audio, however, the hardware is capable. Just download Debut Video Capture software (freeware), and you will be able to record audio and video with the ms-1722. It works good, heres the dl link http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html

I have a quick question that I don't recall seeing the answer to. In both CPU-Z and GPU-Z my PCI-E graphics slot is running at 1x, not 16x. Is this a power-saving feature, or is there something wrong? I have the latest Intel chipset drivers and Nvidia laptop drivers installed. I can't remember if it's always been like this as I loaned mine to a friend for the past several months.

i have read all 68 pages based on the setup of my viewing and it has bin wonderful... my brain feels like its ready to take on a 1722...

    - electro has recommend extremeprocessors or someting of the sort for cpu...

    - i know that elpida 4gb seems to be the best in the 4gb per stick arena... though i only looking to get 4gb kit.

    - i guess most of yall still looking for optical drives or prolly decide to usb install...

    - the turbo button comes with red and black one (ID2)... thats not a big deal for me as i dont overclock...

    - i guess the question on everyones mind is can we have a cpu compatibility chart...

i can say form what i have seen is...

    - P8xxx
    - P9xxx (bios update required)
    - T75xx (based on the stepping)

electro and others correct me if i am wrong and can anyone someoe tell me if a T7250 works....

Extremeprocessors has great prices, good delivery and won't sell modified (BGA) processors.

For 4GB total (2x2GB), G.Skill is still my goto place for DDR2 sticks here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156

The issue with optical drives is the bezel/faceplate looking "pretty," and matching the 1722 ID1, as these will work just fine:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118017

Yes, the turbo button/functionality is limited to the ID2.

P9XXX, some of the newer P8XXX and the QX9300 all require a BIOS update (assuming your unit comes with the 1.0H variant or older).

A T7250 (2ghz, 65w, 800mhz) should work, as its big brother T7500 2.2ghz worked fine in the various 1722's I BIOS updated with it when I borrowed it from a Dell D630.

It is near impossible to track down some of these parts, then you have to verify the Heatsink is compatible. I do wish MSI would offer the GT725 barebones, but ah well.

Same price for both, but Expressitemz is selling the WSXGA+ version (1650x1080) versus alborz59 selling the WUXGA+ (1920x1200). All things being equal, get the WUXGA+ chassis.

Also, alborz uses FedEx which I prefer over UPS.

Plus, Alborz has been on there 2yrs longer and has over 300 more feedbacks at 100% which is pretty impressive.

The GX720 (1722-ID2) is pretty much identical to the GT725, except the GT725 has the 4850 and a slightly beefier Heatsink on the GPU.

Good, solid, LIGHTWEIGHT chassis. I was comparing my bud's 17" Macbook Pro to my daughter's 1722 today and they both feel near equal in weight in my hand. I whipped out my shipping scale, and the 1722 tips the scale at ~7.3lbs versus the Macbook Pro's ~6.65lbs.

Just got my gx720! (ups took forever). Is there a way to determine if the laptop is new enough to have the updated bios without actually installing a cpu and finding out the hard way?

I think putting in a cpu is the easiest way to find out... since you can't even get into bios without one.

I was hoping that maybe with the serial number or something on the box will tell me if its new or old.

I only have a t9900 cpu. I don't want to install it only to find out that I need to get a new cpu to do a bios update.

If it is an ID2 (Black w/ red trim), it most likely has a newer BIOS (but you will still want to update to 1.0U and EC Firmware 4.29).

If it is an ID1 (Black with silver speaker bezel), there is a strong chance it is 1.0H, and it may not recognize your CPU.

Then again, it depends on what CPU you plan on installing.

What's the model number listed on the box, or if not it's listed under the battery.

It came with two small black strips (one's a little bigger then the other), and the installation manual does not say anything about them. Any ideas what they are for? I will have pictures up tomorrow.

EDIT: Anyone want to comment on the default thermal pads? I don't want to replace them if I am only going to get a small decrease in temps.

My opinion, don't change the thermal pads only do this when going for the Quad Core CPU.
The small strips are for the cover on the front on the bottom of the LCD and on the outside cover in the middle of the LCD.
Also just extra info, make sure to upgrade the correct BIOS and the EC Firmware version.
I will upload the latest version with rapidshare and let electrosoft know this so the main page can be updated.

Is the bios upgrades the same one's at msi site? They both say "4.29", but they are listed with different dates.

4.29 is the EC firmware. It hasn't changed apparently.

    1.0U is the BIOS
