that really sucks, technos, however dude, you got a quaddie, its not like you really NEED to overclock, (though i know thats never the correct answer to this problem![]()
One thing i have to add is that the new SCM does indeed add all the cool little pictures and images that pop up when you have it installed on xp, unlike the previous versions that didnt work at all on xp, from what id seen. though i have to say im pretty jazzed my p1 button works now. Huzzah!

how come nobody ever mention this before? I thought i could clock up to at least 2.5 ghz? Thats n00by. is there any way around it?

Thanks for the info re: e-sata Automatikjack. I do plan to use e-sata so will let the list know my experiences.
My OS install is finished-ish. T7700, with an Intel 4965AGN wifi card. Everything else is is pretty run of the mill.
My sleep light is on.. constantlyAlso, I used 800mhz RAM, but I dont seem to be able to select 800mhz in the BIOS. Is there a CTRL+F1 type hidden menu? I will update BIOS & firmware, perhaps this will fix these.

Technos, it is in the thread if you read through the last few weeks. Bane was asking about it days ago where I said the QX9300 only OC's to 2628mhz.

did anybody try setfsb or clockgen?
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
@ cole, yes theres a ctrl+inst command that will give you the "super secret" msi menu, where you can tweak the hell outa your laptop, theres all sorts of scary stuff in there,
as for the sleep light, the only thing i can think of is its prolly a side effect of programming from the older bios days, if you recall machines had one status light that was for power, sleep and whatever other states, with the only other led being the hdd access led. my guess is its the led carrying on that same programming from the led.
@teknos, no i dont think anyone has yet, however last time i checked clockgen was down wasnt it? -
If you check in the manual (page 32), the sleep light is glowing blue when the laptop is on, blinking blue in suspend mode, and off when laptop is off. So the sleep light is functioning correctly.

hi guys i have a small issue. my front right speaker doesn't work (no sound output, but my 3 others do work (back right, back left, front left). How do i fix this?
-
Well got my lappy up and running. Anyone try Windows 7 64 bit and have driver issues? Cant get my Intel 5300 to engage.

Although the correct question may in fact be: "How many drinks have you spilled on your laptop?" -
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
like i said darth, its an old bios thing from desktops back in the day, they prolly just didnt bother changing it any,
@ tecnos, do you have the realtek software installed? the audio manager in there is great, i will say though man that this laptop does have somewhat poor speakers in the sense of decent laptop sound, however the sub makes up for some of it, though treble at higher volumes is a definitely nogo.
@boomer, win7 works like a charm on my laptop when i was dualbooting, im thinking of dropping xp altogether for 7, check your drivers, if you acccidentally got the 32 bit drivers it wont work right if any at all, grab 64 bit drivers, you should be good to go, also check connections if its a new card, and since its a beta, update your os even if you have to connect with a patch cable to your router, any potential upgrades from windows side can help you alot. -
Its looks like I was another victim of IBM/HP proprietary 5300 even though the seller stated otherwise in the ebay add. The seller was great though and instantly refunded my money.

Anyways, has anyone tried Ntune with the gx720? -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
thought about it, but rivatuner is a bit of a better suite in my opinion, it has all of the oc options, and also has a statistics server so you can track your temps, fps, load, the amount of video memory being used for what applicatons, and have an ingame display or even if you use the G15 have the info sent to you keyboards lcd.
Honestly i didnt even know ntune still existed, but if youre curious about ocing the gpu, its been done by at least one other person on the forum, they got it up to 9700 specs, but they took it down cause it was acting up i think.
you also have to consider that issue of one of the ram chips being poorly covered being the weakest link in your oc and possibly a failure point due to a lesser cooling ability in this laptop than a desktop with dedicated cooling per device. -

I got my wireless running by installing a Broadcom card from my old Compaq that had the famous "no wifi" problem experienced by so many HP/Compaq laptop users. I knew the card itself was ok but figured it also had the HP lock on it. To my shock I booted up and it self installed under Windows 7.
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
hey thats cool darth, ive used it before, its got a lot smaller footprint and the inerface is straightforward with the ocing, almost like coolbits back in the day, i remember it did its thing well, i just liked constantly monitoring my card, i'll take a peek at ntune and get back to you on how well it works with the card,it looks like nvidias kinda lacking on its updates for it though, its almost two years since the last revision so im not sure how well itll play with the 96. i just liked riva cause its usually a little more up to date and universal for all graphics cards. instead of using ntune and ati tray tools every time i have a different gpu.
my only concern is the drivers for the card are like this or last month newest, but that shouldnt make too much of a problem either way.
now the real question since we are talking about ocing programs, and before we even concern ourselves with them is, who here has tried one of the custom driver packs floating around the internet, i know of like two or three sites one being whatevers hosted on Guru3d.com, or one or two other i cant remember but can be googled. I'd like to see some frame gains for this little beast of a card, thinkin we may have ourselves a decent chance at another hearty brother to my buddy the 6600gt from way back when.
@ boomer, nice dude, broadcoms always been a good buddy of mine for wifi, love what i got from it, often times they use the atheros chipset, which usually has a pretty hardcore little utility attached to it, either being broadcom made or the atheros standard flavor, it has more options than you'll ever consider using from changing freqs, to monitoring the activity on all of the 12 channels, used by wifi, its pretty cool to just sit back and watch, pretty colors, sweet graphs and whatnot. a network nerds dream.
catch my drift, get a little more vitality coursing through its veins before we think of tempting it? -
When it comes to wifi Im actually pretty hardcore. Ive flashed more wrt54g's then I could shake a stick at lol. This post is coming to you via a 24db dish up about 50ft on a tower hehe.
I had thought about trying Ntune myself but wanted to get a bit of time to run the new build and make sure everything is stable before hand. -
Everyone wants to buy a 4850, Maybe one could be bought from alienware, there only like $240.00 each. Not sure if they will work.

You have to call alienware, I seen it over in the AW forums, let me get the link to the thread:
Re: 4850's Finally out for the m17
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i just called Alienware in the U.S, the cards are available for upgrade right now for 450$. you don't have to send your system to them.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=399576&page=14
The $450.00 is for 2 cards so I am guessing one will be $225.00... -
There mxm 2.1 if i recall.
And you need to have an official AW serial.
Anyone know of a dissasembly guide? i want to remove the touch pannel to get to the speakers, one of the left ones is crackling along the top board -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
@cat like ten pages back we had a full disassembly guide posted for the 1722, if you cant find it, pm me and ill try and ill send it to you.
-
When I get my AW I might buy 2 4850's and resell them for a profit..

Your getting an m17x though.

Well finally starting to play around with cpu overclocking. Went straight to the 24% oc and stable so far at 2969mhz with the P8600. Ran 3dmark06 and results were5525 3DMarks.
-
Nice run on the overclock there boomer, thanks for directing me to the guide elec.
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
interesting oc boom, i got just short of 5k marks when i did a stock test using a t5550, im kind of curious about the overall i'll get from my new proc.
hey what was your stock score compared to your oc'ed one, im curious to see what percentage gain therell be, i need to rebench mine here in a bit. -
I just ran 06 with no oc and got a 5357. Also tried Ntune. It BSD with windows 7. I cant even get it to uninstall either.
-
Small problem. My front right speaker isn't working, even when i screw with the realtek settings, nothing will work. You think its a dead speaker? How would i test it for sure (reseat a connection?) Also, does anybody have a tv tuner card for the GX720 they don't want? And what kind of antenna fits in that connection on the right? And still we haven't found a way to overclock the Q9100?
-
Ooh, i have problems with my speakers too technos, front left though when running in a too basy enviroment, turn off dolby stuff (except for movies, it doesnt bother voice really).
I planned to re-seat the speaker but one of my main clips on the underside of the main faceplate is too tight to be moved :S.
Let me know if you decide to toy around with speakers tech. -
To verify the speaker itself you would have to unplug it from board and check it with an ohm meter. Im not sure what the speakers impedance is and it may or may not be marked on the back of the magnet, but most likely its either 4, 8, or 16 ohms.
-
I think there all two watt sats. I also believe there screwed down.
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
cool so an extra 200 marks, not bad not bad, as for the speakers, yeah i noticed the upper left misbehaving, however it seems to be this is a commonplace problem, i imagine msi cut corners to try and save a bit, its fine by me, i just use the spdif, problem solved.
speaking of audio though, im not sure if i mentioned all of what ive discovered so far, it looks like the crab has graced us with dolby digital 5.1 and pro logic II for sound output, as well as the standard linear pcm, however we do not have dts unfortunately. -
Yeah, the machines have come equip with some nice hardware i think its just interference from the power components, (some have the whine etc)
Its a shame, optimising base levels and such are so good on this machine but the speaker crunches at too much pressure -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
true, i miss my gateway laptop in terms of sound, i just sold it recently, but it had the best speakers ive ever heard on laptops, loud and not tinny, with plenty of bass, unlike laptops nowadays with overpowered headphone drivers for speakers..... makes me very sad faced,
'
im suprised that they only opted to give us 48khz for output in digital on this machine, i was hoping for 64 or 96, seeing as how they decided to "make" this laptop with surround in mind.
speaking of the interference, have you ever noticed like a weird eletrical sound when you have speakers plugged into your laptop or any others youve had, when running power, ive noticed this with several including this one, where whenever theres significant load its a constant sound, and only occasionally when idle, like interference from power, but when on battery it never happens, im guessing its just an unclean power problem, but thats still strange for laptop. -
Yeah i do have that problem, although it really started after a laptop i was watching movies on next to it decided to randomly blow on my, now when on AC it no longer responds :S
Another downside to our machines is, if you like using right hand USB mice, and love to have big speakers blasting from your machine, THAT BLADY wire gets in your way because it sticks out about two inches hehe.
Cooling is great, have to keep bringing that up lol, a 17" with one fan, muahaha is all i have to say, i know ATI arent cool!
In my experience, the free speakers you get with some Sony Erikson walkman phones have some of the best output ive ever seen in my life, for such little things (although i have never heard a toshiba with Harmon Kardon speakers or whatever they are strangely named)
Strangely louder and bassier then my laptop, i may find out power specifications for them and see if they would run comfortable in my machine (may attempt to remove the top row speakers)
Tiny little sats, will measure soon -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
thatd be an interesting mod, though itd rape battery, but seriously battery gaming is ideal but unreachable for sustained sessions.
Harmon kardon speakers are actually really nice, theyre in the same category with altec landsing, and the first to have the shiny concave speakers like from what you see with those little speakers, toshibas with those speakers put out really well, nice bass and good sound, however toshiba makes the mistake of not using nice audio hardware and using soundmax, (why god why), to drive em. if we do things like that, we need to stop footing around and drop a creative chip in there to drive those bad boys. or a decent respone from the crab. it kills me to see that kind of stuff.
how much space do we have under those bars? its tempting, but you also have to consider the power draw, and voltages and all that stuff.
im starting to think just strapping my laptop to my sub will be about the only option i can get for decent sound quality.
harmon kardon does alot if not all the speakers for macs, the clear 2.1 system was harmon kardon, as well as the internal speakers on all the imacs, and whatnot, they're acutally a pretty good company. -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
I don't know what you guys are talking about, these speakers are the best on any laptop I have ever used (dell e1705, hp dv5t, hp dv4t, macbook, etc).
-
Haha darth, were not saying there bad, they are beaut speakers on these machines granted, but we are discussing other speakers of the same size etc, there are a few competative speakers out there
I love using powerful function + natural base level 4 at volume level 50-70 for movies, in some cases the base travels down into the floor and i can actually feel the fain vibrations on my feet -

conn im pretty sure the 1722 model is generally discontinued, the 725 is the new bright and shining star, amongst other things, such as the rampant theft of these laptops.
As for the speakers, darth, yeah theyre good, just not as good as they could be, for msi to have put all this awesome engineering into this machine and then skimp on the speakers is confusing, sound is good, prolly a 6/10 overall, seeing as how most notebooks score a 4 or so, and my acer about a 3.5, this machine does well, but my old gateway for its compact speakers scored like an 8.5 with rich sound, bass, and volume without distortion, with the top of the line speakers for laptops, being the ones with the 2 inch drivers such as the toshiba quosimo line, as massive as they are... theyre great, but at the same time rape your battery to no end.
as a given this whole conversation is irrelevant cause i use the optical out for a surround system, i wont have that same option when im deployed, and there i will get to know their weaknesses and stregnths quite well. The quadrophonic sound was a nice touch and an interesting idea, ill give msi that, buuut, id rather just of had two nice drivers pushing good midrange sound, than having tiny speakers for straight treble and a little midrange for a sub to cover the inadequacies of the midrange to low.
i mean this machine should have the same sound as the "theater or media center laptops" since gaming grade is beyond media, as the higher end. who knows i may just pick up some nice sony monitor headphones. and hey you cant blamea guy for wanting to make an exceptional product even better right? =P
oh btw, cat, any luck at seeing if those drivers will fit? gimme the good news man -
