I tried a 180W Targus PSU in the past and it made no difference and peak pull was the same as the stock PSU under load.

But I will say it was ice cold to the touch at all times. I would opt for an undervolt, but depending on how the power is distributed and mutually independent, undervolting may not solve the GPU issue.

 i wish i knew this before i blew $70 bucks for it. Oh well, hopefully something magically will happen and it will work.... I guess having two power bricks isn't a bad thing.

Anyways, I have discovered that the gx720 and gt725 do in fact use DIFFERENT motherboards. The gx720 has pci-e 1.0 while the gt275 uses pci-e 2.0 Who knows what else is different.

I want it to be a surprised when I post my mega-thread, but it should be obvious. It only cost me 200 bucks :D Screw the 280m, I ain't paying 500 bucks for such a marginal improvement. Besides, i am using 1680x1050, not the higher rez.

They are both the same motherboards, I had this verified through MSI, I also owned both the GX720 and the GT725 and swapped GPU's and everything was a go..

they are different, or at least the PCI-E is different. If you don't believe me, look at all the GPU-Z screenshots for the gt725. They all show "PCI-E 2.0", and I can confirm that the gx720 only uses "PCI-E 1.0" Of course there is no performance difference, but it is still a difference between the two. v1 and v2 are completely compatible with each other, so saying you can swap cards is moot.

Moot? The 4850 runs in the GX720 without any problems. I sold my GT725 to my brother but still have his 1722, I will swap them in a day or 2 when he comes over and take screen shots and prove to you that it works..

Moot = "of little or no practical value or meaning"

There are two different versions of PCI-E. Generation 1 and a Generation 2 (Generation 3.0 has already been announced). The main difference between the two is that v2 doubles the bandwidth (0.25 GB to 0.5 GB). However, no card uses that much bandwidth, so there is no real world difference between the two. ALSO, they are both compatible with each other. Of course the gx720 can use the 4850, but it does so using pci-e 1.0. No performance impact at all. BUT it is still a hardware difference between the gt725 and gx720.

I just got my Win 7 upgrade option product key from from MSI. I noticed
it says on it "Windows 7 Home Premium 32". I was hoping when the actual
upgrade disk arrives it would come with the option to install the 64 bit version
but this makes me think not. Dang! What if any drivers did you have to
download to go 64 bit & where would I find them? All the drivers for this
laptop on MSI's site say 32 bit. I see no 64 bit drivers there.

MSI sent me the upgrade for the Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, but you can actually contact the Program Team and request for a different version. I told them I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and so they ordered me a new upgrade for Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

    https://windows7upgradeoption.com/ContactUs.aspx

I'm not sure if it's going to work if you ordered your upgrade already though.

Are you saying the drivers MSI includes for this Laptop are 64 bit compatible
even though they are only listed as 32 bit? That would be cool, or possibly
Windows Vista 64 or W7 64 install includes all necessary drivers for this laptop.
I know that typically 32 bit software should run fine on a 64 bit OS but that is
not normally the case for drivers. It is usually important that the drivers be
written for 64 bit to run properly on 64 bit OS.

@ keitai - I just got my eSATA docking station in & decided to give the
Seagate drive one more chance by seeing if it might be detected through
the external eSATA dock but no go. It does spin but BIOS still doesn't
detect it. It just shows "No eSATA detected". I'm curious as to what
BIOS your GX720 is running, just on a long shot that maybe there is an
issue with my BIOS & the Seagate.

Its mostly likely a cable issue, make sure the esata cable is plugged all the way in and be careful to not move it around because I noticed its really sensitive to disconnection.

BTW, I'm using a Vantec Nextar 3 external enclosure and I'm using the Fujitsu 320gb hdd from my GX720.

When you swapped the 4850 into the GX720, did you benchmark it and make sure it ran fine under GPU load?

I wonder how it would fair under OCCT or Real Time HDR, since Tomshardware indicated the 4850 would throttle back under extreme load in the GT725. If the GX720 is having a voltage problem potentially, OCCT or RTHDR would probably reproduce the throttle issue or really shine a light on a potential voltage issue.

it's 2.4ghz. It's the second best cpu for notebooks (qx9300 being the best).

If anyone ever needs a 9600m replacement, I have one for cheap.

I would keep it until you are absolutely sure the 3870 is working 100%. But yea, 150 is cheap compared to others. I am trying to sell mine for $100. The only thing that worries me is the backplate seems to be un-removable, which could be a problem when installing in non-gx720 laptops.

the only other card you can do an easy swap is the gts 160m, but i promise you that you will not be able to find it. the 9600m gt is the best nvidia card for mxm-II. You can find other nvidia cards, particulary on ebay, that are more powerful, but will require some modding of the heatsink.

Nice, I see you are discussing the possibility to change the video card. I haven't read a lot of previous pages ... but I want to ask: Did someone knows where I can find the heatsink of MS-1722 ID3 (GT729)? I want to buy one and to change my GPU. Thanks a lot.

your best bet would be to try and find a service manual for the 729 or contact msi and ask them for the part number of that heatsink, then hit up ebay or google.

just got word from msi after contacting them, they wont be doing win 7 drivers for our 1722. This ticks me off, as this system ive built isnt even 6 months old. Here is the conversation between MSI and myself:

me: I have an msi-1722-ID1 laptop. I am looking for windows 7 drivers(32bit) as im going to update my OS to windows 7 on this laptop. Could you link me to the windows 7 drivers for this model please? I cannot locate them on any of msi site. Thank you.

MSI: I am sorry to inform you that now windows7 drivers are in test stage. After msi finishing tests, msi will provide them on msi global website. Please pay attention to msi global website periodically. But not all the models have Windows7 drivers.Would you please let me know your marketing name like GT725,GX720?So I can help you to confirm whether MSI will provide the dirvers of that model.Thank you!

    MSI Global website:
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodpage1&maincat_no=135

    Best Regards,
    MSI Laptop Technical Support

me: hello and thank you for your reply. The model would be GX720

MSI: I am sorry to inform you that MSI will not provide windows7 drivers of this model.I advise you not to install windows7 on your laptop.Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience.

    Best Regards,
    MSI Laptop Technical Support

me: I just built this system in march, it isnt even a year old. Now you are abandoning it from being able to be used with a new OS? Why is it not being supported?

MSI: I am sorry to inform you that the agreement is decided by MSI product management and the sales. In future if MSI will add the model which can support windows 7,and MSI will put this information on MSI global website.

Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience.

    Best Regards,
    MSI Laptop Technical Support

this is the most awful support i have ever seen. EOL before i even have something for 6 mos????

lol, you can still use windows 7. There's nothing special about "7" drivers. Just use the Vista ones.

I'm going to be installing 7 x64 in a few days.
