    @ Darth Bane,
What you mean with: You have better chance to win the lottery? You mean that no one will sell me the heatsink? Anyhow I try to find one and I will inform you here for the results. :)
What I want is to change the GPU at least with HD 4850. I also noticed (as of pictures I reviewed) that with small changes the heatsink of HD 4850 can fit to GTX 260M, witch I already found in one shop. I might try my luck with that one. After I'll inform you about any BIOS locks or any other incompatibilities if there are any. :)

I ran into a problem, The 3870 I ordered does not come with a back plate on it. How will I be able to bolt the heatsink on. MSI said they dont sell the back plate for the GT735 so now I am stuck. I need some ideas?

first thing i did with this laptop is check win7 compatability, it works like a champ, win7 is really looking good, even put it on my desktop, my old opty 165 likes 7 x64 very much, cruising along.

As for drivers, you really dont have to worry about msi drivers, i never really even used anything from them for drivers cept for the scm, nvidia videocards arent plauged with the ati issues with proprietary drivers, so you can use the most updated ones from the site, as for everything else, i assure you, intels new chipset will definitely support it, and as mentioned before, one of 7's key design points was backwards compatibility with drivers, i.e vista drivers work fine for anything that may not make it, though highly unlikely.

As for the ram, gskill ram is a beast, anyone whos curious, with my proc im maxxing the 24% oc stable with my ram now running at a screamin ddr 1000, with the same cas timings and all that good stuff, man i love this ram....
now only if there was a way to tighten the timings in the bios.

keep boosting this beast as far as itll go, and it keeps wanting more, love this machine... cpus now at 3133 or so.

    Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5100

Working excellent with no issues. Connects fine to my home router - Linksys
WRT54G. Full signal strength at oposite ends of the house. Detects my
neighbors wireless network at about 2 bars signal strength when I'm at the
oposite end of the house from him. Also seems to pick up adequately scanning
for other networks within range when on the road.

You can install any size (mine's a mini wireless intel 5300)

My targus 180w is coming tomorrow, or it's supposed to be. If it doesn't, I am going to go postal at the post office.

    @ Automatikjack
You are right about the OC capabillities of this machine. Also my MEM is running fluently on 24% OC -> [email protected]; DDR 800 @ 990. You can see the picture @ my signature. I forgot to post the clocks of the memory, but soon I'll correct this. :)
    @ dimartino21
You can use half or full size wireless cards. You need to buy it, it does not come with the laptop. I use Intel 5300 and I'm very pleased with it.
    ---
And unfortunately I had no luck with the e-mails I've sent asking for GPU heatsink ... :( No body sells them for now.

The Mini-PCI slots on HP/IBM laptops are wired slightly different than every other laptop and require a modified card to work properly. If you install the HP/IBM 5300 adapter in a non HP/IBM laptop, the card will not operate properly.

Just pick up one of the plethora of standard 5300 adapters on eBay usually $17+

    That's what it came with. I have a GX720-032US, not a bare bone 1722.
This comes already loaded with wireless, optical multidrive, P8600 processor,
memory etc.. I don't know what size the card is as I only looked it up in devise
manager. Not being a bare bones, it came with a 3 year warranty & I don't
really plan on upgrading/tampering with any internals that may void my warranty.

    I just have a quick question about a certain GX720 model. A GX720-224CA. Here's the link to it: http://pccyber.com/?v=product&i=NB-MSI-GX720-224CA

I can't find any information on this particular model on the MSI website. I'm wondering if anyone has this particular model and if it would be significantly different than what a regular GX720 might have?

What's the resolution on these models btw?

I have some sad, sad news. Even with the 180w adapter, the 9800m gt does not run at full clocks....

cobra, I am very interested in knowing if your 3870 will work at full speeds. If it does, I might just sell the 9800m and get a 3870 (or maybe a 4850 if nacro5 can get one from alienware).

ATM, i am bios flashing every minute trying to find the maximum clocks.

Don't give up just yet, this is a actually a common problem when it comes to upgrading to unsupported mxm cards. Nightwalker ran into this problem when he upgraded his c90p. Try following his guide. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=316079

I tried overclocking the "3rd" level, but Windows didn't like even the most smallest OC. I don't see how "tricking" it will accomplish anything.

    The first 3870 I see, I will most likely buy. I am even thinking of just getting a different laptop :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I would overclock all the modes to extra clocks and increase the voltages to make sure it doesn't work at all.

doesn't work. I set all other modes to full, but the card simply stays in 2d-mode, even when gaming.

yup, as soon as windows boot screen was done, Windows died.

Would the motherboard bios have anything to do with this? I highly doubt it, but I am using the older 1.0s instead of the newer 1.0u

Well the other thing I've noticed with gpu upgrades is you kind of have to stay in the same brand for them to work properly. Which is why I'm surprised the 9800m is giving you so many issues. If the laptop isn't giving you a insufficient adapter warning I think you can exclude that from the list of possible problems.I don't think its a issue with the bios but updating them might work. You might also want to try rolling the bios back to a earlier version if thats possible. What voltage's are you running the card at when you try to change the clock settings? Also can you post any screen shots with gpu-z as well as how things look in nibitor?

I've tried adjusting the voltages and nothing works. The 9800m gt should work because there's a smaller msi notebook with a 9800m gs.

As soon as my heatsink arrives I will put this together and let you know. I hope I dont run into this problem. I did hear the 9800m GT has that extra HE tab for certian power requirements. That could be a reason it wont work right.

Interesting Darth... I never got to really test my 9800m GT when I put it in my 1722.. I didnt have the right heatsink and ran into heat problems which caused it to shut down... I believe it will work but there is some kind of adjustment that has to be made.. I am not sure but someone here at NBR should be able to help you figure it out..
As for myself, I just got tired of trying to upgrade and just bought another laptop.. I dont think the 4850's from AW will work in the 1722, I believe the tabs are diffrent.. I could be wrong. As of now I dont have the extra funds to inquire about the cards.. I just hope you manage to find a solution to this problem..

I bought 1722 barebones, last month and just got around to buying a wifi 5300 card. It installs fine, but will not find my wireless network? This is my second card, first card did the same thing? Before I return this card I want to make sure I am not doing something wrong. Any thoughts?
    Thanks Tom

Seems a lot of people have problems with the 5300 and 5100 wifi cards thats why I put a 4965 card in mine. Can you give us some additional info about your laptop like what OS you are using?

Darthbane: I have no idea what they did to make the 9800m gs work without the HE tab connected to anything. I can't quite remember for sure, but I think the m15x worked without connecting a HE tab as well. Maybe if you try flashing a 9800m gt bios from a alienware card? Is there a way to tell if the card is running slave or master card mode? Maybe even try flashing the bios from a 9800m gs card.

The 9800m gt did come from alienware (at least the guy shipped it in a anti-static bag that was labeled "alienware".

I don't think flashing the card to the 9800m gs bios is a good idea because they are two completely different cores. The gs has 64 shaders, while the gt has 96 shaders.

edit: Updating to the 1.0u bios did nothing.....

What about a slightly bigger power brick along with yet another reflash?

Or using nvid tool to oc?

the power brick is 180w, that should be MORE then enough for a 45w quad and a 65w 9800m gt.

the only way I will flash to a 9800m gs is if someone guarantees me that it is compatible and will NOT kill my card.
