What I meant to say is dell says these cards are 4870s but they show up as 4850s (or something like that I forget), thanks for the info, but I already have it covered. I just purged the whole situation from my memory because it no longer matters, 50 or 70 she's still like 5 generations old

Well my ebAy sourced like for like replacement works fine, and I have sent my original for reballing.
    Back to X16 is welcome.
As I still use it I look at upgrades it's easy and relatively cheap to find a good CPU, 8 GB ram is around but not cheap, an SSD would be nice for gaming, it's just the GPU which holds the rest back.
So still going hard after six years again with a thorough clean very often.

If my tweaker roommate didn't drop mine or whatever they did to it (long story) itd still be running, but since the hinge is buggered I just have it sitting off to the side, albeit still fully functional

According to MSI, this SKU is completely EOL therefore no parts were available anymore.
Check on eBay or NBR marketplace and see if you can find it.

That would be my guess. These computers, though awesome, are outdated and an obsolete screen ratio. I'm further bummed because I have a very lush panel and it had amazing color.

I own MSI 1722 ID2 and I wanted to do some upgrades , so I read all posts but links on front page doesn’t work , can anybody tell my if topic :

If you're interested in the i7 version of the 1722 (AKA MSI-1727 / GT740), please go here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=435164

    still exist ?

Also I need newest firmware and BIOS , so if anybody could send it to me I would be grateful ;-)

As far I understand the best graphic card that I can upgrade to is 4850 , will this model fit in my motherboard : http://www.aliexpress.com/item/ATI-...5870-HD4870-Graphic-Card-DDR5/1388840444.html ?

What CPU will work with 4850 better ? Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 CPU 3.06 GHz or X9100
6M Cache, 3.06 GHz , one has a lower TDP but other has more cache ?
    Thank You in advance
PS : Dollar is going up and Cyber Monday I soon I want to make my decision as fast as possible

This is a very old product and parts are very scarce. Have you checked with MSI directly on availability? If MSI doesn't have it then try eBay, otherwise no more.

If not eBay or MSI, maybe the NBR Marketplace or local sellers (Craigslist or the like).

I was wondering if anyone has the recovery discs for this laptop and if so can you make an iso image of them and find a way to upload them to me some how?

Wow, your GX720 is still running after all these years. :)
Hopefully someone can send you the image, but if not you can always contact MSI support for those (service charges may apply).

I appreciate your help. This saved me big time. However I am not looking to buy anything. If someone has the discs laying around somewhere and is willing to make a copy of them for me thats great. If not The drivers you have found and the utilities Work just as well. I have windows 10 64bit installed on it as we speak. So I thank you again. Everything seems to be working flawlessly

Honestly friend, not much. its nearing 9 years old. Core 2 Duos are pretty heavily outclassed performance wise by other offerings. SATA II limits bandwith performance, and slower ram types with a cap at 8GB + the old Nvidia 9600gt or whatever it was means little for gaming performance. Not sure how the used laptop market is where you are, but I'd price it based off of that. CL here shows many i7 laptops for $250 with much newer specs, quadro gfx, usb 3.0 etc.

Mine is maxxed out with the specs in the signature and is still kicking as a TS server but badly needs an OS reinstall. My ex roomates (the dirty lying tweakers they were) dropped the poor old gal and destroyed a hinge and usb port, but she isn't ready to go quietly.

GT735s have been seen on eBay but only in damaged/not working condition. I wont lie and say I'm not curious considering spare parts are very difficult to find.

One last bit of irony though, the hellish performance of all the new bargain bin (junk) laptops out there are likely still a lot lower than this laptop, since they have the same sales model of using crippled celerons and base level intels in new laptops.

Im sorry to hear that. That sounds a lot like my XPS M1530 I had. I literally had it for over 5 years when the gpu finally died. I do enjoy these older laptops. They are built to last a lot longer than laptops now days. I would like to ask if you have a recovery partition on your hdd. It must be the OCD in me but I love having original OEM Software for laptops. I dont know why lol.

I still have my GX-720.. In almost perfect condition ( small crack above usb ports on LHS ).
I got it out of a rubbish bin, missing its hdd and ram .
    Upgrades i've done :

CPU upgrade to a Quad Core QX9300
GPU upgrade to ATi mobility 4870 512mb This one ---> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/For-ASUS...677332?hash=item4b03c34a14:g:mBUAAOSw41xXPBeS
    HDD upsized to 500Gigs

    RAM is next...

I still use it regularly and it rocks ( for its age ). It runs Tomb Raider 2013 pretty good on low settings. Keeps the kids happy. :)

Automatikjack is correct... it still runs rings around a lot of bargain bin ( junk ) laptops.

Just thought i'd share some info... cheers

    Mine is still going, after:
a ebay replacement 9600M GT Graphics card as the original was only going X1 instead of X16.
I added a 240GB SSD to speed up switch on.
A new DVD drive cheap standard type,
I must change the RJ45 & USB panel as WAN has stopped working since a lightening strike.
I put in a Intel AC 7260 WIFI card it went from 30Mb to 45.....

I agree with automatic these 2GB RAM cheap jobs are barely up to surfing and running the OS.

I narrowly missed an allegedly perfect one for 70 euros....worth it just for spares, another on right now with a corner slightly damaged screen at 120 euro.

I have however just noticed I am on 1.0G Bios where there is a H and even a modded 1.0S version to run Quads...

On my next clean I want to renew the thermal pads as I've never done it - has anyone an idea of what thickness I should use?

Depends on brand and personal opinion which can be nearly anything. (Think how no two people will put condiments on their sandwich the same way). There is definitely some guidelines to follow.

IC has a great guide here http://www.innovationcooling.com/application.html

Clean the old past off best you can with a lint free cloth, rubbing alcohol will help remove the old crud. Make sure to use the highest purity as it does contain water. Some people like coffee filters to clean most of the goop off.

I use arctic clean as it dissolves and pulls out more than you think it would. Lastly, make sure everything's good a d dry when you're done.

    Two more things,
    1. What kind of paste do you have? What's it made from? Pastes like arctic silver are supposedly conductive to some extent and may not be a good idea for exposed processors with no integrated heatsink.

    2. More is better than less, not reaching all corners of the chip can create hotspots and damage your processor. If you are not sure you're doing it right, apply some, assemble pc, and take it apart again, you'll see if there's any naked corners. Don't be too concerned if it doesn't immediately drop temps, most pastes have a cure time.

I was talking about the thermal pads on the VRAM and a few other places. I think I must get some decent paste as my wife's old C2D idles showing 52...

Not a clue, you might be able to peel one off and measure the outsides, they're pretty cheap on eBay, bought a stack of em when I was preparing the upgrade to the 4870. Also stuck a few small ram sinks on the back for added local dissipation, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you do a similar mod to what I did previously. Any custom gpu upgrades may be worthy of modding the voltages.

As it stands, my laptop was not able to support itself under full gpu load on battery and would shut off if it was unplugged during gaming, however would run fine on battery during normal use outside games.
