Still rocking mine daily at work. On a side note does anyone have a motherboard for the multiple 17" laptops that use this same board? I have a like new 1722 ID2 1920x12000 that just needs a motherboard.

I still have mine. It's been good to me aside from the cracked screen bezel and a couple of dead pixels. I still love it though!

Boards are hard to find boomer. There's still a few complete 1722 id1s floating around out there, but I don't think you want to pay $600 for a bare bone laptop just for the mobo.

Speaking of that, anyone know if there's any extra screen bezels floating around or perhaps those little rubber bumper things that cover the screws?

Hey guys, need a little help with the notorious DC power jack. I know tons of people have the issue, and that you should solderer it versus replace it, but I am wary of just cracking open my gx720 and rummaging till I find the DC jack. Does anyone have anything close to detail oriented instructions, maybe some pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I heard that the ATI Mobility Radeon 3850 Heatsink fit for the 8800M GTX card too.
    Is it true?

Please make a photo of your current heat sink. I will try to find solution. Maybe I have the same or 2 heatpipe version as well.

Your current heat sink module is for small vga card and it is not compatible with big vga card as 8800. I should have big heat sink on stock.
You need heatsink in the middle:

    Hello there.

I'm looking for a spare motherboard (MS-1722), because the northbridge is dying on mine.

Anyone in EU would have a spare one ? Or at least I'll be grateful to know a place where to buy one...
About any incoming question, I don't have money to get a new laptop, or even a used one.

    Thanks for reading.

Hi. I need some help solving an issue with speakers in a 1722. I haven't used this laptop in a long time so I don't remember if it worked correctly before. The thing is that sound is not working right, i searched a lot and tried several configurations under windows 7, windows XP and Ubuntu, but the problem is the same, very low sound level, only subwofer sound, doesn't recognize 4 channel speakers... As it happens under different OS, I think it is a hardware problem, so i tried updating bios and EC with no results. If anyone could help that would be great. I don't know what else to do. Thanks in advance.

    Hi.

Did you check the cable connections on the motherboard ?
Do you have sound on the out or headphone lines ?

Recently I replaced the old thermal paste in graphics card and processor and I didn't see anything strange or a cable out ot place, so I think every connection is fine, but I will check again as soon as possible. The headphones line have the same problem, i plugged in my stereo speakers and the sound level was lower than normal.

Thanks for the quick answer, This is the only active forum thread of this laptop that I found.

Try to update the Realtek Audio controller to the newest version.
High Definition Audio (HDA) R2.73 (7161) WHQL

Note: Remove existing driver first, reboot, install the new driver, and reboot again to allow the driver to be installed correctly.

I just installed windowsXP and downloaded drivers from realtek webpage, but nothing seems to get any better. I had the same problem in ubuntu with alsa and pulseaudio drivers.

I have located the ALC888S chip, cleaned around it with compressed air and checked connections with motherboard. Everything seems fine.

I just realized that the headphones out is not woriking. No response, no sound in headphones and internal speakers don't mute. The line out instead, does work, the realtek sound manager software detects that something is plugged in and mute internal speakers, but the sound level in headphones is very low.

The strange thing is that it's not a complete failure but a severe malfunction.
That's why I think there's probably a faulting solder somewhere, or, worse, a dying component.

By the way, why are you re-using this laptop ?

It had the power plug of the motherboard broken and a few days ago I managed to solder it. I thought this would be a good laptop for multimedia purposes beacuse of its nice 17'' screen (it is the WUXGA non-glare version), 4.1 speakers and TV tuner. That is why fixing sound is essential.

Is there any chance to locate the faulting solder (if any) and repair it or the only solution would be to replace the whole motherboard?
Or a cheaper solution if this exists would be a mini-PCI sound card in which i could plug the internal speakers, but I don't think this could be possible.

You can find a USB sound card which can solve your problem.

Otherwise, it may be very tricky to find the faulting solder/component if not visually apparent.

It's my daily computer, because I don't have the money to buy a new one.

I do, the bezel is falling apart, but she's going strong. I tend to use her for media and maybe other games on the side. I'm tempted to make it into a retro gaming laptop. All the cncs and stuff that require old unsupported protocols. It still irks me to this day that it wipes the floor with my sager when it comes to sound quality and doesn't need an emulator to make the sound quality passable.

You need to find someone locally or on eBay that has the right soldering gun for circuit boards. Then they could just replace the jack outright. Is the jacj physically lose? If not you may be able to use a small brass brush or cotton brush with contact cleaner and then get in there and retension the contacts. I did that with my old hp and it helped.

    Hello guys,

First post to say hi and thank you for all the info in this thread.

I still use my GX720 every day for hours, hell I still game on it (Project reality - mod for BF2). It runs a 23" 1920X1080 second screen and is regularly cleaned.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (6.1.7601)
    Architecture: 64-bit
    Current Culture: French (France)
    Motherboard: MSI MS-1722
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz (Physical: 2, Logical: 2)
    Memory: 4,00 GB
    Page File: 4,00 GB
    .NET Framework: 4.5.1, Runtime: 4.0.30319.18444

    Display Information
    -------------------
Display Device(s): Generic PnP Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
Generic PnP Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    Display Mode(s): 1824 x 1026 (32 bit) @ 60 Hz
    1680 x 1050 (32 bit) @ 60 Hz
    Driver Version: 9.18.13.2702 (327.02)
    Display Memory: 512,00 MB
    Multisampling: 2, 4, 8
    DPI: 120 (125%)

I am still happy with it, although twice in the last year its had some odd won't POST fault after being moved.

I even think of upgrading bits:
    GPU

    CPU

But I am too inept and scared of BIOS things.....

So another is still going and has created an MSI for life fan after 6 years of gaming and pron.

Heh pron. Good choice of cpu, but good luck getting that gpu to work. You have a much better chance of getting the 5870 to work, although that will sill be a stretch. You might want to find something that is an msi card for starters.

After having read this whole thread I can see that now, your config is the only option, and even that with the difficulty of finding the card and HS.

I have ran GPUz and discovered my 9600 is running at 1x only, I ran a 3D Mark 06 and got 2700, so clearly a problem.

I have ordered a S/H card and will see if that returns to x16, if so I will send my old card for reballing.

Is it safe to assume your broken bezels come from your screen change?

On a final note when I bought this machine like you it was a 59Hz, and as I only play Project reality a BF 2 mod I was annoyed. However as I bought it from a local decent shop they sorted it out without changing the screen.

Dell cards usually work well in msi systems. They have a similar ec setup it seems.

Many DELL cards generally are rebadged Atheros or Realtek cards that's why they work on different systems.

I guess I should have specified that I was talking about my Dell 4870/4850 (I still don't really get which one it is) that replaced my 9600gt.

I did want to mention that you will need an msi brand heatsink for an ati card. The nvidia card won't mate up correctly.

I see, you can launch the AMD Catalyst Control Center to determine the actual hardware.
Or you can provide hardware ID under Device Manager then we can try to configure out what you have.

GPU-Z should be able to tell you the info you need too (clocks, shaders, memory type and width etc).
