In case anyone is wondering, the laptop in question is a GE75 Raider with RTX 2070
-

-
 Definitely the RTX2060, good choice.
-

 Thanks all for the input!

This system specification for GS65 with RTX looks mighty interesting..

Thing is I have been a Dell user since long and have bought my rigs via friends in US and got them here (I live in India). Dell is awesome with international warranty and support (after ownership/warranty transfer).

I was using a 1070 based A15R3 and just sold off as I couldn't just lug it around anymore, it went out for a decent price.

Question is, does MSI have any provisions for the same?

Anyone having ideas or experience, please validate!
-

 Thx!
Could you please tell us especially about the battery?
It's my last criterion to buy it or not... I am a bit afraid of the power consumption of the rtx 2060Last edited: Feb 1, 2019

My GS65 2080 MQ is in the city - picking it up mid-day. No review coming, but I will get impressions out ASAP. I have an early 2018 GS65 1070 MQ to compare it to.

EDIT: got it! Much better than my 2018 GS65 in terms of rigidity and flex - none at the wrist rest spot which was what bugged me about my 2018.

How's the audio? Same as last year or is it a little louder?
-

Wow that’s good to hear. Looking forward to some benchmarks and thermals.
-
This was the deal breaker for me as well. I purchased another brand that had easier upgradability because the slots were accessible just by removing the bottom of the case. I could have performed an upgrade but when doing so and having to remove the mother board I am certain that if there is an issue MSI would void the warranty because I went into the internals and made changes. I didn''t want the risk of this. Maybe there is a design element in inverting the motherboard but I am sure we are not alone that this is a deal breaker.

Power consumption of the RTX2060 is a concern vs what?

 TGP (for laptop cards):
 RTX 2060: 80-90W
 RTX2070MaxQ: 80-90W
 GTX1060MaxQ: 60-70W
 GTX1070MaxQ: 80-90W

These are the standard ranges, each manufacturer adjusts depending on the thermal envelope/cooling capacity of each model.

The only lower power option is the much lower preforming 1060MaxQ.

For me I really like that the GS65 RTX 2060 model is so much cheaper than the GTX1070 but performs better or same. Only loss is the 2GB of memory but the 2060 has faster DDR6 and better futureproofing/architecture anyway so it's a wash.

I'm really excited especially about the GS65 RTX 2060 and would love to hear more feedback from people about temps and noise on it in particular. With the more solid body, if it also runs a bit cooler and quieter, it definitely wins over buying a GTX1070MQ model laptop for me.

Especially if it has decent performance and runtime on battery.

 Thanks,

Not only cheaper, I think the performance of the 2060 is on par or sometimes better than even the 2070 max q. It's definitely a good deal for those that want a new laptop but don't like the premium prices for the 2070/2080 max q.
-

 Nice dude!
 What GPU did you get?
I’m finishing up writing my review right now so it’ll be cool to compare benchmarks and stuff

He mentioned 2080MQ so I assume you are both around the same. I look forward to your review. I am mostly set on buying a GS75 myself so I want to properly compare it to the Gs65 to see if there only changes are the size/dpad or anything else
-

 Yup, 2080MQ.

Ordered from HIDEvolution and just opted for the "standard" 1TB as a 2nd SATA storage drive - received a WD Blue 1TB ( https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0B/dp/B073SB2MXT) - not bad. The 32GB RAM "standard" upgrade for $150 ended up being Kingston DDR4 2666 modules (9905703-008.A00G) - also not bad.

Just installing stuff now, including 3DMark. Should have benches soon.

The trackpad is much improved but still kinda crappy compared to a MacBook. The gestures do their best to emulate but they will need some serious getting used to - and not really worth getting used to for someone like me who has an MBP 13" for a work laptop. Ah well, not bad for in a pinch or on planes. I will go back to my Logitech G305.

I spec'd out the 2060, 2070 MQ, and 2080 MQ at HIDEvolution - all things equal it was only about $150 more for the 2070 MQ and a big jump from there (like $800) for the 2080 MQ. So I get the "complaints" about the 2070 MQ versus the 2060 - but the pricing is very, very fair.Last edited: Feb 1, 2019ixixmmx likes this.

I don't think there is another laptop on the market that compares to the one one a Macbook but that's why I always have my G Pro Wireless when I travel.
-
Well mine has been delivered and brought in will be testing it tonight as I get off work. Now the model I have is the RTX 2060 with the the stock TIM. I will be replacing it over the weekend but will first take temps with the stock config then stock + undervolt and then either monday or potentially later in the week next week a aftermarket repaste + fujipoly thermal pads + undervolt.
-

Nice. Looking forward to your results. Mine is still in the processing phase. Which thermal paste are you going with?
-

I am still in the return period for my 2018 GS65 8RF with the 1070MQ, and I'm thinking about upgrading almost solely for the better trackpad. The one on my unit is pretty terrible, and in fact bows up above the palm rest in the middle. Would the 2060 be enough to have similar performance? I know there aren't very many numbers out there about the 2060 vs 2070MQ, but I'm wondering if it's worth the $300 upgrade.

Edit: Also concerned about the VRAM

3DMark runs...no undervolt, all stock - just Dragon Center custom fan profile.

 Great temps:

So I usually go with Thermal grizzly! But I also have a big thing of MX-4 so it'll be between those too.

Wow those temps are great! Glad we can set custom fan profiles as well, I haven't owned an MSI before only the Razer Bladeixixmmx likes this.

Are these temps with stock voltage?
-

sk3tch, did you undervolt the CPU?
-

I changed absolutely nothing - except the Dragon Center settings. I updated the post to reflect that. This is also LM + Fujipoly. But I must say - my 1070 MQ GS65 had that too - these results are outstanding compared to that model:

Fantastic results man, It's amazing how far thin and light machines have come in terms of performance. Dannemand, toughasnails and sk3tch like this.

I wouldn't worry, the RTX2060 is like a stronger stock 1070, so it is better than the 1070MQ and close enough to the RTX2070MQ that depending on the game it might just be faster than it haha. The 6GB should not be much of a problem, and if it is, it will be on specific games, seldom, and something a simple dial back in a setting or two would fix. Don't worry.Dannemand, toughasnails and Audiall like this.

Those are about the same temps I get with my 1070 Max-Q with LM+Fujipoly pads. Nice results!
-
Seems like the two extra heatpipes this gen are really helping out.
-

If it's the temps above - that is the 1070 MQ with LM + Fujipoly. My old GS65 is about 5C higher or more with the same LM (and it is not an age thing, as those results are from November, when my LM was about 5-6 months old).
-

 Those temps are amazing.

Wow, so the 2080 MQ actually runs cooler?

 Yup.

This 2019 GS65 is like another class in terms of quality...and I loved my 2018.

Btw guys, it doesn't help me up here in Canada, but BestBuy USA seems to have the GS65 RTX2060 16GB 512GB model on for $1999 USD + tax for some reason.

I had thought $2099 USD for 256GB model was the going rate.

Sorry for the late reply, got home late from work and didn't get a proper chance to run anything since I was having problems with windows updating. Regardless here are my stock results for now.

MSI GS65 Stealth 8SE (RTX 2060): After 2 consecutive runs of Superposition 1080p Max

Bone stock / No undervolt / no aftermarket TIM or pads

edit 1: Other first impressions, the keyboard is better than their other steel series I have used, the top of the chasis is definitely sturdier as well. Audio while lacking bass no longer is too quiet I feel. Overall very impressed

edit 2: I should also note the ambient temp here is slightly cooler than normal room temp at around 62-65 degrees FahrenheitLast edited: Feb 2, 2019

Amazing. Looks like the need for re-pasting isn't even there - and you still have undervolting as an option in your back pocket. MSI knocked it out of the park this year with the GS65 revisions. ryzeki likes this.
-

So with an average consumption of 47W the battery would last a bit less than 2 hours I guess...

 Thanks for the test!
-

The battery was never meant to last in gaming.
The 8+ hour claim is for productivity use only.
Plus, the battery would cripple performance because it cannot supply the necessary amperage and voltage at high loads over long periods of time.

I was actually very impressed as my previous Razer blade would hit much higher temps in the same test. I think the additional cooling heat pipes really help normalize temps here. Now my only question is how is it when RTX is on and the other half of the gpu is awake, I don't have BFV to test and am definitely choosing Anthem in the promo for free game this laptop qualifies for.
-
Thanks for this, so 2080 max-q is 80W, 2060 is 70W. How much slower it is, could you repeat some of the @sk3tch tests and post scores?
-

But is it really working the 8+ hours in productivity use? Or is this just good publicity?
