Nice to know this, I was under the impression the 9th gen wasnt worth it because, while it had increased clock speeds, it had higher temperatures and not much gains to justify.
If it is not to much trouble, would you mind mentioning some of the key benefits of the 9th gen?
Perhaps I'll consider publishing mine on marketplace and picking up the 9SE when it goes on sale in eBay.

I wouldnt recommend getting the late 2019 9xx series just for 9th gen. I just happened to get a deal on a used one off ebay for below $1K (no damage) and just went with fine tuning it.

Personally I'd wait for next gen

The price of the GS66 makes me cry on the inside...

from what ive read and seen by having both in hand...mught be me being crazy...9th gen deck seems stiffer....also may be the reaosn why its bout 200grams heavier......9th gen...at leats mine has some of that thermal reflective film under the deck in the postision were the ssds and ram go....maybe it a coincidence and all have it but the pics ive seen of 8th gen dont....9th gen doetn have the rivet causing the ribbon cable of the kb to break.....there's some for ya
-
Thanks for this, and Regarding the rivet, this was addressed in laptops manufactured after, I want to say, 2018/05 (2018/07 it was definitely fixed 'cause that's the one I bought).
Perhaps I'll list mine for sale and try and grab the new one, one can dream!

Id say save up for gs66 thats my plan anyways assuming it is what i think it will be,,,,which is pretty much my wishlist for what the gs65 should be....better thermals, better battery more power
one thing im on the lookout is the heatsink design i recon it might be the same exact layout as what we have now with better fans.....if this comes out to be true we might be able to swap in those new fans into ours.....wishful thinkingLast edited: Feb 22, 2020 -
In regards to the later 2019 Gs65, it is quite sturdy in comparison to the 2080mq 8xx version I initially used at the start of 2019. If anything, no creaks under regular use and handling.
I do however want the GS66, but the pricing for 300Hz and more makes the total around 3.1k USD from what I remember reading. Hopefully it becomes way more affordable after a year and with ampere.
Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk -
I agree with this observation as i experienced the same when handling both models....also its what ive been saying for a while....i do not have pricing info on the gs66 where did u see it? i have a 240h scren now and iunless the ampere version of the 2060 is crazy amazing i dont see 300hz being a factor unless its like 800nits or something.....i was expecting grabbing one in the sub 2k range if not i have no problems waiting till half of 2021 to get one as ia put the bestbuy protection on mine for 3 years so i have no issues keeping it longer than this year onto the next worst case ill update video card on my desktop first.....also wan to get an ultrawide at some point so not spending on a gs66 is fine for now.....i have other machines i use more often so its not a priority....LoneSyndal likes this.

Pricing came from a friend who has worked at MSI US and Corsair. Whether or not the pricing will hold upon release is another story.

I reckin it should be more inline with where the gs65 was at launch which started around 1800....im thinking eventually get in on a sale or BF for 1600 or less which is what id be waiting for.in the meantime im pretty happy with the gs65.....i would again love to see if i can put those newer fans on it
-
As long as the price dips below 1600USD for a 240Hz/2070 equivalent or better, I am all up for it.

As per Svet. Looks like the settings on the 9xx series MSI GS65/75 are hardware locked. Decided to hell with it and applied conductonaut (extremely fine mirror layer; no excess) to my system to end this issue once and for all. Temps cap out at 74C after 2 hrs while playing TD2 at 3.6GHz on all cores (I cap TD2 at 75 FPS because RTX 2060 wont be able to do more than that stably on a 240Hz display).
-
What settings were hardware locked?
-
Yeah which ones..mine just doesn’t let me go under 26 on the multiplier in bios but I can set it fine in ts
-
Ah I see, yeah it doesn't let you go below 26
-
Cpu flex ratio cannot go below 26x. Any possible edits can only be minor modifications like switch fcn key swaps. Potentially can brick laptop if attempting to overwrite the locks since it may require flashing hardware too.
Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk -
The 26x lock was on the BIOS updates. I had flashed mine back to an older one to remove the lock. Also there is a softmod way of getting around that I think that was posted here before which involves using the intel xtu app.
Edit: Mine was for the 8000 series so not sure about the 9000 series. The 9000 series might actually be hardware locked. Sorry. -
Not sure why, but silentoption from time to time would trigger the GPU to turn on (white LED turning orange) and would drain battery life. Anyone know a way to stop it from doing so besides restarting the app?
-
Try to put it to use iGPU (if possible).
-
Already had that on. It still triggers the dGPU mode and kicks fans in after a certain event (not sure which, I've only been using MSWord and Dev++).
-
Anyone having flakey USB port issues? Sometimes when my Audeze Mobius are plugged in, audio craps out and performance visibily drops for a second.
Update: isolated issue to the cables. Both cables for my Audeze Mobius were faulty and after swapping to a higher quality cable, no more issues. That faulty cable would cause machine to freeze when my headset bugs out and stops being recognized.

BIG EDIT: 8SE version, I apologise for the confusion.
@eyek @eurodj101 @Kevin@GenTechPC , I can finally confirm that I have found a 90W VBIOS with the mDP working for the 9SE (RTX 2060).
VBIOS is found here.
Guide used is below - The only thing I did different was uninstall and reinstall latest Nvidia Drivers after restarting post vBIOS Flash.
Notes: I was unable to get my mDP to function when I was flashing different vBIOS, I tried three different VBIOS back to back and then decided to go back to stock and still could not get it to work UNTIL I uninstalled and reinstalled Nvidia drivers (I used DDU).

Wow that's awesome. Were you able to tweak the function and do some benchmark? Perhaps this can show you whether the upgrade works or not. Thank you.
-
The 2nd screenshot was only posted to show the TDP value, it doesnt accept unsigned VBIOS, so while you could tweak and save it will never let it flash. I have not benchmarked yet. I was only interested in getting mDP back. I may download Firestrike later and test (recently reformatted and only have productivity apps installed).

Definitely interested in some benchmarks see if its worth the hassle to flash.....But its nice we finally have a fully working bios!!

So around the same performance as the previous ASUS 90W BIOS I listed with the non-working MiniDP.
OCed with the following BIOS Tweaks
TDC:
- CPU Power and Performance: CPU VR Settings

- IA AC/DC Loadline = 1
- VR Current Limit: 928

STOCK (80W) -No OCs: 13136 FS Score
NOTE: Not at all scientific, I took the results of one control I had saved from when I first bought the laptop.
The current FS Score is just the top I got off max of 2 tests. Funny how its the 2nd highest I have ever gotten. I have reached 16XXX+ but could never replicate it.
Current ambient temp (Google Search) - 28C, fans on max 150% CPU/GPU, laptop back is elevated with small laptop stand.
My intention with this post is just to communicate that it provides the near the same if not equal performance to the previous 90W VBIOS I listed from ASUS where the mDP did NOT work.

You reckon then now that everything's working its worth it? -
I am not sure how much of a difference you will get with games. It helps for benchmark.
Temps were around 85°C on GPU for me.
I want to say it's nice to have, free upgrade. But not indispensable.
Sent from my BLA-L09 using Tapatalk -
Seems easy enough to try if not go back to stock
-
Oh man! 85C on the GPU is hot.
-
Im sure he could improve onit

Yeah I'll monitor and will probably need to repaste.

Is it possible for Firestrike to report false temperature readings? For instance GPU max temp shows up as 87C in firestrike during the physics test, but neither HWINFO nor MSI AB record temps that high, so unsure who to believe.
Anyone have a similar experience? -
What does AB say and what does hwinfo say?
-
i reckon id give this a go soon
-
Firestrike graph says 87, HW & MSI AB say 70ish.

thats odd but seems fine

Dang, after two months of intense backpacking and such, I can tell my unit is bowed. Not a returnable condition sadly. Anyone know if I can just flatten it with a few books or something? Not very keen on replacing the entire chassis this early in the cycle.
Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk -
Mine did that aftr a few dissasemblies put some weight on it over a day or two between two flat RC setup boards and that fixed most of it, i think the mobo is part of what gives it a bt of structural support andd when taking it out it just sags abit and does that. They improved on this on the gs66 so sucks we hve to deal with it....hoefully i can get a gs66 on sale at some point
-
Can confirm MDP works with Oculus Rift S, also i cant get new those FS scores, dunno why i know ts workign ok cause in gme i see the core clock hit the power limit warning in AB and i have bout 150mhz more core clock on average than before but cant seem to get to 15kLast edited: Apr 1, 2020 -
I was only able to break 15k after the BIOS edits.
Sent from my BLA-L09 using Tapatalk -
I did the same bios edits and still not there...im on a 9se maybe its my undervolt?
-
I recall scores could vary if plugged into monitor. A maybe wrong though, might have just been a coincidence.
I did not have external monitor plugged in.
The 9SE BIOS is locked isn't it? I know the GPU ASPM setting gave me another 400ish.

no idea wherever to find that do u know?

It is in one of the unlocked section. If you can unlock yours I can try and give it and post exact location.
