After six weeks of owning MSI-GT683DXR-423US, now see message to replace battery. It has never charged up past 83%. MSI gave me an RMA and wants me send everything back on my own dime, which means being without notebook for a few weeks. Is this a common problem? Seems like they should send me a replacement battery and when I get it, send the "bad" one back. Or they should send me a loaner notebook (yeah, right). At this point, it almost makes sense in gambling on battery as problem and buying a replacement because at least I would always have one as a spare in case that wasn't the problem and it is the charging unit instead. Any thoughts, including best place to buy replacement battery if I do? TIA!

sounds like the 512Mb one is not so good...
Thanks for your help -
While I realize that this is not going to be an option for most people, (because this is an outdated method) I thought I would throw out there how I flash the bios just the same. I find this method to be the easiest, at least for me.
I hook up a USB floppy drive and a USB flash drive to the laptop. The floppy drive has a traditional Windows Boot Disk in it, and the flash drive has the bios files.
I boot from the floppy drive, and then at the command prompt, I type b: to switch it to the USB drive. (your drive letter for the USB drive may vary) I then type "flash.bat" without the quotes.
It then flashes the bios. -
Does this thing have switchable graphics? I keep getting conflicting reports about that.I'm current;y pondering whether to get a dv6 quad edition or the gt683...
-
no it does not
new raid set up

ok guys. i need someone to help me get something cleared.
first thing first. i used to get very high temperatures on my gpu:
up to 85 stock clocks
up to 92 720/1735 oc
now, i thought that my GF ruined my computer. we were gonna see a movie but then we had to leave so she just closed the laptop (doesnt auto sleep) and put it in the bag. after a couple of hours the bag felt weird so i looked and laptop was on and it was SUPER HOT. omg i burned i thought...
cheked temps, they reached 98 or more...
NOW the interesting part. after this happened temps are now:
up to 77 stock clocks
up to 82 720/1735 oc
LOL. did she fix my computer instead??? -
Either that or the GPU isn't reaching its full potential anymore...make sure to run some benchmarks just to be sure.
-
Nope, everything good. i even score 3521 on 3dmark11 with 700 overclock. what happened??
-
could it be that the hot temp help spread around the thermal paste thus making if more effective? =)
-
I'm not sure, but I've heard that baking older GPUs can bring them back to life in a sense.
Or what dragon said -
-
I'm going to go with this: The thermal paste on your GPU decided to "spread the love"

Just wanted to post my experience with this laptop. I recently ordered this from newegg, I guess my friend motivated me by getting an Alienware. After doing some research I found this seemed like a better set-up as I didn't want a 17" screen, and the only other option from Alienware was a 14". In my short review:
Pros:
- The screen is awesome, don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. I haven't seen a laptop with a comparable viewing angle or quality before.
- The sound is awesome, I've had previous laptop boasting their sound quality, but these speakers are the real deal.
- FOLLOW THE ADVICE IN THIS THREAD FOR OC'ing! My performance went from 2496 (with turbo) to 3469 in 3dmarks 11. Noticeably better performance in Starcraft II
- Keyboard itself is well made, separate buttons for each key, love the feel
- Can use a laser mouse in the bottom right side of keyboard, works great (some laptops are too reflective)
Cons
- No backlit keyboard
- The fan is loud when on, but it keeps the components cool and if you're not doing heavy processing/gaming just keep it off and the computer is silent!
For anyone whose curious about OC'ing, I used nvidia inspector tool posted earlier in the thread and also the custom .inf file posted by Keith1341, thanks! This is by far the best laptop I have used, and would highly recommend it. -

Hi! Im quite new here and recently found this laptop. I haven't found much reviews nor youtube videos about it.
My question is should I choose this laptop over the msi GT780DXR im from sweden so the price diff is very big.
The GT683DXR costs: 2 165,79 USD
The GT780DXR costs: 2 496,97 USD
The only thing i was wondering is if the keyboard on the gt 780 is worth the price diff or will I be happy with the gt683?
Engadet didnt like the keyboard much, what are u guys opinions? -
Unless you cant live without backlit keyboard otherwise you should be fine. I was turned off by its size difference though, compared size by size its significantly larger and heavier.
-
You dont know where to find any rewiev on it? -

Here you go! PowerNotebooks's Channel - YouTube
This is the previous GT683R but is the same shell and it shows the lights in the dark about 2:30 in. -
-
Kinda cool but not worth the extra dimension and weight IMO. The backlit keyboard and the larger screen, better looking back cover, thats what it attracted me personally.

Had order an MSI GT683R-242US a while ago - got a great price on it $1,379.88 with free shipping. Anyway - I was really happy with it until I tried to hook it up to the network via RJ-45 ethernet port. Wireless router on otherside of house and when the microwave goes on is screws with the connection - so I have a hard wire drop to the router. Big surprise the RJ-45 was connected to air - check OS for connection and BIOS and nothing was there. Oops shipped it back and decided I would like something with a little better quality control decide to look into Asus or Clevo/Sager. Leaning towards Clevo/Sager right now.
-
Umm i dont really undestand what you meant but not sure you will get better result with other brands on that aspect

Wireless signals are reliant on 3 things:
1. Router quality
2. The environment
3. The wireless adaptor
If you have some cheap free router going through several walls then you never had any hope with any card. -
Now, back to being professional, get a better router... -
Hi, does the GT683DXR with the GTX 570m model
have a barebones model for me to assemble?..
Thanks.. I was once an MSI user, thinking of coming back, maybe! -
currently only the 17" barebone have GTX570M, you can wait until mid November . Or buy the one I'm going to put up for sale soon
-
Hmm? Which one?
PM me!
I'm kinda interested.. -

It is however so rare that it will probably never happen to you again in your lifetime regardless what brand you buy...but don't think that is an indicator of poor quality with the MSI brand.
As for your wireless connection, I agree with the others who have replied here, blame your WiFi router or just the condition of the structure you are in, not the laptop or its WiFi card. -

Browsing the XOTICPC site I see the GT683DXR-603 now has the i7 2670QM as the stock CPU.
MSI GT683DXR-603 - Xotic PC - MSI Gaming Laptop
I make this post for those that maybe didn't know this already! -
It's been up on other sites for a few days.
-

Yes, most MSI resellers, including PowerNotebooks.com, have had it for a little while now.
However I don't know if the Intel® i7-2670QM is actually worth $50 more than the Intel® i7-2630QM. The clock speed is only 10% faster, and you can't really see any difference in daily use unless it is about 20% + faster, and even then it is only nominal. -
Hello.
I'm new owner of GT683DX and i have two questions :
1 - How to change P1 program?
2 - Is there any way to make key shortcuts ( FN + some keys ) working in other applications then windows desktop? E.g. i'm watching movie in fullscreen and want to turn down the volume using FN and can't do it.
Thans mates! -
2. keyboard shortcut work in any application, example: watching movie in vlc player and i can perfectly use fn+right to increase volumen -
not working with media player classic, it will adjust the volumn inside the program instead.

The program to rebind P1 is on the website with the drivers.

-
What are the normal running temps for the graphics card? Mine runs over 80C during any game.
-
79 - 83 OC 720 core -
-
I am thinking of buying a cooling pad for the laptop. Do you guys think it actually makes a difference? And if it does, which one should I buy?
-

-

-
Nope just download and run it.
-
is it all working? screen brightness adjustment?

Yes you will have no problem and even gain a little performance boost depends on game you play.
-
