If you downloaded the 285.38 notebook drivers from the nVidia site, please use the inf file I have attached. I modified it for my 683DXR, and it has brightness control and full functionality.

Just remove the .txt extension from the end and you should be good to go. :)

    Hi Guys,

I used the 700/1400/1800 OC using MSI Afterburner. I was playing BFBC2 and it crashed after a while. Now I know that BFBC2 is known to have issues with Afterburner, so I was wondering if anyone uses this overclock to play games for long durations? Or is it just to check the limits of the card?

I am using the 285.38 drivers.

ive used this OC over 3 hours in bfbc2. i was not necesarry since stock runs good, but i wanted extra smoothness because i was testing the HBAO feature.

anyways, driver were 285.27 which i personally think they are better than the 35, even score better 3dmark11. so i played and OC with msi afterburner with no problem whatsoever. temperatures went up to 90 C, but thats because i havent change thermal paste yet to IC DIAMOND.

    thats that

EDIT: BTW thats overkill in memory hz... try lowering to 1735

I game at those clocks for long durations, but those clocks may be a little high for your card. Try downclocking your memory to 1750 and see if that helps.

The performance difference between 1750 and 1800 is next to nothing, so you probably won't even notice a difference. :)

Thanks for the replies Keith and Flapo. :)

I lowered it to 675/1350/1750 and ran BF3 for about an hour without any problems. Are these settings good, or should I make any other tweaks?

Also, do you use some other form of cooling? Will the OC hurt my card in the long run?

How much better did you score with the 27 drivers? I tested the 38 drivers, and didn't see any difference in scores...they were maybe like 10 points difference? I ended up going back to the 27 drivers because I was having the broken brightness controls. Btw, my stable clocks were 700/1400/1650, and I was getting p3400 for 3dmark11. Vantage was like 13,300.

    Hey guys,

I'm contemplating buying a GT683 (still not sure if I should go for the R or DXR. Maybe even a GT780), but I have a few questions first.

Does the touchpad suck? I've read a lot of things that say the touchpad on these and the GT780's is really bad. If it is bad, is there an easy fix? (Aside just plugging in a mouse)

How's the keyboard? I've read mixed things about this too, some saying its too squishy, others say its top of the line.

Is the 570M really worth it? The DXR is $180 more expensive than the R on Newegg

    Thanks! :)

Although i use my mouse most of the time but whenever i have to use the touch pad, i dont enjoy it so yeah it sucks. Sadly theres no solution for it.

The keyboard is fine, though I can use some backlighting.

GTX 570M is way better than GTX 560M, its more than worth it.

That's a bit disappointing to hear, as I'm quite frequently in places where a mouse is rather impractical (couch, bed, etc). :(

I have the GT780dxr and I don't have the touchpad or keyboard problems. It might be luck, but I guess there's always some amount of risk that something may go wrong. I mean, the keyboard does have some flex to it but it doesn't bother me at all. I wouldn't say it's squishy by any means. If you're concerned about gaming, the 570m is a good investment...especially if you're more into the newer graphics intensive games.

My preference is to use it on a desk because it's not exactly the smallest thing. Also, I wouldn't want to block any vents underneath. It might be ok with a hard portable surface, but would still seem too obtrusive. Some have complained about the touchpad being jumpy or unresponsive at times, but as I stated in a previous post, I have no problems like that.

But for me the mouse-pad is quite responsive, works fine. Have't tested for games, but for normal use is really enough...

Hmm.. so are my odds pretty good for getting a touchpad that is usable?

Also- Would anyone recommend the GT780DXR over the 638?

    Hello Everyone!

I took some time and read through this entire thread, looking for a resolution to a few specific problems of mine. A few of them came up, but it would be great if someone could help me out a little bit.

1.) Is there anyway to use the full potential of my GPU on battery power? I don't really care that it will use my battery fast, I just want to have the option of playing SC2 on battery with more than 15 FPS.
2.) Can anyone who has disassembled the bottom of their GT683r give me a quick rundown on how to change a hard drive? I know which screws to remove externally, and how to pop off the back plate, but when it comes to the hard drive cradle I have no idea and don't want to break anything or remove anything I don't have to
3.) What would be the best way of clean installing windows 7 on an SSD once I have installed? Would I have any problems if i just removed one of the 500GB drives, installed the SSD, booted a Windows 7 install disc to install on the SSD, then format the second drive in Windows for storage?

Thanks for any input, I look forward to being a part of this community :)

If you don't plan on moving the 780 on a daily basis, I would highly recommend the gt780dxr. The 638 is obviously more portable, but in my opinion, has a slightly less efficient cooling system because it is more tightly compact.

Yeah I wouldn't be moving it too much too frequently, thanks for the recommendation! Though from skimming both threads it seems like the 780's are a bit more prone to mouse issues? Then again the thread is 4 times as long lol.

One last question before I poke into the 780 thread since I imagine this would apply to both; the 12GB models, are they 3x4GB or 2x4GB+2x2GB? Thanks again!

    1. Your battery will not deliver enough power to run at full settings.
    2. If you have your bottom cover off you will see one hard drive is held in with a hard rubber stopper, and the other with a bracket with only one screw in it. Remove that screw and pull it out. There will be 4 more screws holding the HDD into the bracket. Remove them and swap in your SSD, reassemble.
    3. It is best to take both hard drives out (just pull the rubber stopper out on the 2nd one, and then pull the hard drive out) before installing your OS on the SSD. Otherwise it may, and probably will, install your OS to the magnetic drive and you will have to start all over. Once installed but the 2nd drive back in.

    Thank you very much!
Is there anything special to removing the back plastic cover? In the videos I watched it seemed pretty flimsy and I don't want to have to force it too much.
And that's too bad that you can't use full GPU power on battery, is there any way to get a little more juice from it or is my only route to lower graphics settings?

Just take the screws out and lift at the thumb slot. You can use a plastic knife to slide away from the slot until the first clip releases and the rest will come off easily.

What frequencies do people use on overclock? Right now Im using 690/1380/1730. Should I lower any further or is this a stable option?

And another thing, does a cooling pad help much?

Edit: My temps tonight ran upto 87. Is that ok?

In what circumstances did you run up to 87?
Usually you should not worry up to 90.
Cooling pad is always an option for a warmer environment of the notebook.

Wow, that's an insane temp decrease just from thermal paste. I never saw that kind of improvement with AS5...granted, that's all I have experience with. So IC Diamond could potentially lower temps 8C on the GT series notebooks?

Ran upto 87 while play BF3. To apply IC Diamond Id have to send the laptop back to the reseller right? Really don't think I wanna do that.

And are the overclock settings good? Or any changes needed?

No need to send it back, u can even do it urself if u have some kind of expertise in the area.

overclock setting can be taken up to 720 core if u like (1735 memory).

Thanks for the reply. I have never opened a laptop up. Always been a desktop person. But as you said, if under 90 is fine, then I will leave it at that. Only BF3 needs an OC, all other games run just fine.

For me, BF3 doesn't need OCing...but it obviously gives better fps if I do. While OCed, I'm running 700/1650/1400.

Yes, it is normal for the AC Adapter to get very hot, almost too hot to hold, but not too hot to just touch.

For those of you that have been waiting for MSI to post a bios update that addresses the issue of the laptop wanting to boot from a USB flash drive instead of the hard drive if a flash drive is connected, they finally posted a new bios that addresses it.

I know I've been waiting for it. :)

Even though I believe both versions are the same, I'm going to post separate links for the GT683 and GT683DXR bios below with a copy of MSI's description of changes. Please be sure to only flash the bios if you are comfortable doing so, and to flash the bios that is applicable to your model - IE: Raid or Non Raid and GT683 series or GT683DX series

    a. Fix OSB Logo error.
    b. Change Boot priority.
    c. Add CPU micro code.

¿Just a little question, the GT683DX model is the same as GT683DX R?

The BIOS update is posted on GT683DX home page, but on GT683DX R there is no download at all... :(

    confused...

    Thanks for the tip.

I beleave i will notice something, cause sometimes the laptop stops at boot when the external USB3.0 HDD is connected and on.

I'll upgrade later (can't do it now, cause the windows upgrade sotfware don't work on windows 7 64bits) and post the results.

I think it's for the MSI boot screen that shows up at startup. Sometimes the boot screen acts like the resolution has been turned down and the F11, DEL, Recovery startup menu options on the bottom left gets hidden because it's out of view.

Lurking on this thread a few weeks ago convinced me to get the GT683DXR with the 570m ( and send back a gimped asus G53SX). I've been using the stock drivers and most games run well. Except for BF3. Every time the browser game thingy tells me to download the updated 285.38 drivers but I can't find them for my card. People here seem to be playing the game with the same machine I have. How do they do it ?

I just followed that guide since flashing in windows is not an option :-??. Download the unetbootin file and let it format the flash drive then put the bios file into it.
Then boot up the system whil pressing F11 to choose boot via flash drive.
