Thanks mpmonroe88 and Donald for the confirmation. Just wondering if Msi has plans for a refresh on the Msi Gt68x Series come Ivy Bridge/Kepler, and if so will they incorporate backlit keyboards into their 15.6" lineup like clevo is doing with the Clevo P150HM? Im just a huge fan of the Gt683dx series and would rather get it or its successor as opposed to the crippled ASUS G53SX and the plain 1 hdd Clevo.

First Post ever. I'd just like to say that this board is awesome. I just got a MSI GT780DX and I love it. I'm looking forward to OCing the 570 soon.

This little machine looks sick! :D

As I've posted elsewhere, I'm grabbing one myself. ^_^

Yes, you've convinced me to drop from this monstrous 18.4" machine down to a tiny 15.6" machine, without losing anything that I would want mind you. :D

    Backlit Keyboard
    Matte Screen
Twin HDD Bays (This was the biggest turn off for me with the 15" laptops)
No problems with Sandforce SSDs (Clevo doesn't work with Sandforce very well, if at all...)
    Native 1080p
GTX 570M (apparently can be flashed to a higher voltage. :D)

I mean, The ONLY thing you can potentially dislike about this is that it's small... I've always liked a big machine. However, this matters not as I've found the GT683DX-840US to fit more than enough of the criteria for me to like over the next couple years. :D It's a fair boost over my i5/460m I thinks... :D

    @ imglidinhere

The Gt683DX-840US doesn't have a backlit keyboard. Try the GT7xx models for the steelseries backlit keyboard. Alternatively you can wait a a month or two till the introduction of Ivy Bridge/Kepler and see what the 15" and 17" models bring to the table with refreshes. If you can't wait though Msi is probably your best bet for value/features.

The MSI 15.6" models will still not have a backlit keyboard even after the Ivy Bridge refresh, only the 17.3" models will.

    Quick question:

Got the laptop a few weeks ago - swapped to SSD, repasted the CPU/GPU. Runs great except....except it has a crappy wifi card. I'm looking to upgrade to a 6300, but I'm not sure how to get to the old n-130 to remove it. I've found the posts that state it's under the speaker/touchbar but how do I get it off? Anyone able to give more details? Does it just pop loose or do i need to remove the bottom screws to access it. A simple walkthrough, or just verification that all I need to do is use a screwdriver to pop the speak bar off, and I would greatly appreciate it. Just don't want to break the laptop forcing something.

What I did was remove the screws at the bottom as I wasn't sure if any of the screws held down the touchpad/speaker. Once that was removed just use a flat head and gently wedge it in between the right side where gloss and matte meet. You can do it on the left side too. Then it's a matter of applying a small enough force to snap it open as it's held by plastic tabs. One important thing to note, there's a ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the mobo near the mid section. So be careful and don't pull too hard where you end up ripping out that cable. Also, make sure you extend the monitor all the way out as the touchpad/speaker section includes part of the hinge.

    My computer just came in!

A couple of questions. It has the 570M. Looks like it did not come with Afterburner pre-installed.

What are everyone's recommendations on getting the most out of this machine graphics-wise? I'm mostly going to be playing SWTOR as of now. Should I download Afterburner? Stick with just the NVIDIA control panel settings? What are the optimal settings and procedures everyone is experiencing here?

This is my first foray into doing this sort of thing, so help is very appreciated!

Congrats on your purchase, its an amazing laptop and it has one of the best (if not the best) cooling system on a laptop today.

While afterburner is developed/sponsored by msi its not pre-installed, download it and intall since its a great tool to oc and monitor gpu usage, clocks and temps.

Don't forget to game with the turbo button on since it will increase cpu and gpu(575Mhz) speed to stock.

Regarding Swtor it runs great on the gt683 BUT it has an issue (at least for me) of low Gpu usage, till now i havent found a solution for this.

Thanks a bunch! I'll make sure to download afterburner, then.

So you're saying SWTOR does not make use of the full capabilities of the gpu?

On my laptop no, ie: it runs @ stock speed but since my card is oced to 785 mhz, it would give me some decent fps boost.

Its not a hardware problem though, there are tons of people having this issue with some users having top grade desktop hardware.

Dont worry though i still get around 20 ish fps on fleet (with 300+ users on it on the highest eu sever).

Thanks. I ran SWTOR for the first time today for a while. I was averaging around 58 fps with no overclocking, just TDE running.

One thing that did concern me a little was that my GPU temp was averaging around 80 C. My fan kicked up quite a bit rather consistently. I was expecting better when I added in IC Diamond in the order for this one. Is it something I should be worried about? Do you experience the same thing?

Did you use the cooler boost? Without it my laptop heats up really quickly while gaming. Never reached 80c with the cooler boost even when the card is oced.

Try using the cooler boost while playing swtor(which is known to heat gpus) and see how it goes from there.

A decent cooling pad can help you shave off a few degrees if your really worried, although you seem to have only slightly higher temperatures than average. Ambient temperatures play a role (mayhap your Texas home is a bit warm in March?), as does the quality of the IC Diamond paste job, and let's not forget luck. A cooling pad should allow you to overclock (when you decide to) without worrying about your temps at all.

Thanks. Ambient temp at the time was 28C. I certainly hope I got a quality paste job!

Looks like I'll be investing in a cooling pad.

Yesterday while i was playing prototype, the temp go properly over 80 and the game freeze for the first time ever o_O! Is there any good cooling fan for MSI GT683R ? Because during Spring break, I think i will overuse this computer.

Well this is due to poor optimization of the game for pc,,,same goes for Left 4 dead too,,,they tend to heat the laptops or even desktops more than the latest demanding games like BF3, witcher 2 or crysis 2,,,So dont worry about that.turn cooler boost on btw.
And if the game is freezing try turning turbo boost on and keep the laptop connected to the charging,as it seems battery alone isnt sufficient enough for the graphic card to run at its capabilities.

Got this laptop (gt683dx) for a week now as a replacement for my acer 5750g with ati 5650.
Only thing I was worried about was keyboard, but my new lappy has firm keyboard, flexibility of keyboard is even less than on my old acer. Overall build quality is really good, so really happy.
Cooler boost gives me 10-15 (celsius) less that on normal mode. Just a note my acer was going 76-79 degrees on cooler pad and gt683dx goes max 76 celsius and 65 celsius on cooler boost for bf3, swtor, syndicate, skyrim and risen2 beta on max. This is for stock paste. However, asics quality is only 80,29%, but will see how it goes in overclocked mode
Maybe will repaste it in couple of months.
I think it is good idea for everyone to get cooler pad, especially for summer. My old hp dv9575 goes even higher and I always have it on a cooler pad.

It would appear that the GT60 does in fact have a backlit steelseries keyboard!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6O6JeI-HZs
Wonder what the "source" was for this theory, especially as an Msi reseller..

I need to ask these things
.Should I leave NVIDIA overclock at startup
.Should I open Cooler Boost through all the game way
.Is the temp 64 good enough while running game (Batman Arkham City)

btw I got cooler pad today and dont even know why when I got into Saint Rows The Third today, during intro scene the FPS turn into 16XX o_O! then when I got into the game it drop down to 34 and problem is I always play it with 60 FPS (without overclock) so any advice ? I try turbo boost but the button doesn't light up so I think this laptop has been screw and it show that it's turn on but nothing improved

    @SlickDragon
Hmm, a flame thrower eh? And so new to the forum :)

At the time of the post you are quoting that was the information we received directly from MSI. Usually, but not always, accurate.

Please also understand that not everything that MSI has worldwide is brought into the US market. A good example is the GT685DX which can be found in other markets in the world, but is only brought into the US as a barebones (Our PowerPro R 11:36 built on the MS 16F2-019) and not as a branded model.

Information distributed by the manufacturers one day can change the next, and just because it is shown at CeBIT, it doesn't mean it will ship in the same condition as the engineering samples or the mock up models shown there. See for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRXaPAS72OQ where it says in the descriptive text "We don't have detailed processor specs to share, unfortunately, and the models that MSI had on-hand at the show were simply mock-ups with older components."

We will have to wait to see exactly what comes into the US market once it arrives in late April, or more likely May, but as of now MSI is saying both the GT70 and GT60 will be in the US market both having the Steelseries backlit keyboard.

I don't see any wildfires spreading, mayhap your misreading my statements intent, which was not malicious. Clearly you were wrong with your prediction a couple weeks ago, which happens to the best of us, just know when to admit a mistake, and shirk away from the high horse of superiority that sometimes plagues even well meaning individuals.

It is known that backlit keyboards are highly coveted in laptops, and especially gaming notebooks. Many people rotate towards Alienware precisely for that reason, and thus the competitors have begun to follow suit. Asus ROG has long since incorporated them, and even Clevo is finally taking the overdue step with its new p150em/p170em. Msi trolling around and not implementing backlit in its 15.6" model when its already had a Steelseries keyboard in its 17.3" for a year was highly unlikely, and would certainly be foolhardy from a business standpoint. However as a reseller wanting to sell current models of the gt6xx, it would be favorable if the perception of the masses was swayed into thinking that they wouldn't be losing out by buying now. I'm not saying this is the case, only that to ignore this hypothetical possibility would be naivete on our part.

Perchance Msi was unaware of the plans of implementing the Steelseries keyboard a mere two weeks before Cebit, and as such the "information" was passed down to the reseller(s?). Clearly things either changed in the past 2 weeks, or in fact were in motion for much longer, and were able to come fruition earlier than planned. Either way I wouldn't constitute this as reliable information, and it's doubtful there is much room to argue to the contrary, though I suspect that will not stop some.

So far little has been revealed at Cebit regarding the GT60 and GT70, due to nda's and uncertainty of ivy bridge/nvida (kepler? fermi rebrand?) release dates and availability. The only thing relevant that the Gt60 showing has brought to the table is the backlit keyboard implementation. To suggest that that's also a conceptual and possibly misleading feature is foolhardy. It's unlikely that Msi would publicly and officially tout a highly sought after feature as being integrated, and then not deliver the goods. Those type of mistakes don't bode well for a companies reputation, and Msi will not let it be tarnished as they truly are a top tier player. As such I'm glad to be certain without a doubt that Msi will have backlit keyboards in their Gt6x line up, and I knew they wouldn't let us down.

    Wow long post is long.

All Paladin did was tell you what MSI told him. In no way is that a mistake, or maybe in your case you would prefer he said nothing?

These were mockups so we can't be 100% sure that they will ship with what we saw, we may only get backlit keyboards in certain regions (the UK don't get them in retail 783DX models!).

So don't call for him to apologise and "man up" when you are quite frankly acting like an entitled brat.

Now I know that sounds harsh, you have made some nice comments about the community and it's true that people can get on a high horse (I know I can) but you need to reserve that for when it happens.

I will not see another community die because we accuse some of the most valuable people on it of being wrong when they are just sharing what they know.

It is feasible that Msi switched plans eventually, as I noted. However in terms of making a decision to buy now or later if the implementation of backlit keyboards is important to the consumer, it would be preferable to get an answer of uncertainty as opposed to a definitive answer that seemingly isn't accurate.

I'm only requesting that future answers on sensitive topics are more conservative in their response, such as "At this moment according to Msi it seems unlikely that the Gt6xx will have backlit keyboards, although it can't be ruled out entirely and we can still be pleasantly surprised". I don't feel entitled to getting undisclosed information thats 100% accurate, its just a preferable boon.

I hold very highly of Msi resellers, as its clear that their dedication the the community is unparralled and laudable. I will have no hesitation contacting Powernotebooks or any other Reputable Resellers for my next Msi purchase. I'm only noting that they are human, which implies that theoretically some errors can happen, but ultimately that's a vastly superior status then being a faceless corporation that is indifferent to the plight of its costumers.

The fact that these valuable people are able to go back and forth with us on a plethora of matters means that the community is blessed and will prevail for the long haul. No one thinks less of them for any matter, and I haven't faltered in my trust of their competency. However if Donald or anyone feels I attacked their good work, then I apologize in advance.

He never said I know for sure, he only relayed what MSI had said.

Much like an overclocker saying "do this at your own risk" the information he provided was for you to base your buying decisions at your own risk.

If you want to take him to task for that it means next time he will just keep quiet and I would rather have the current information but be aware it may be subject to change.

He has nothing to apologise for because he was doing us a favour.

It's like frying your machine and then asking the person who posted the guide to say sorry when he pointed out the risk.

Thank you SlickDragon...apology gracefully given, and accepted.

Just remember how many words it took to put out the flame that you started with oh so few words: "Wonder what the "source" was for this theory, especially as an Msi reseller.." Your post would have been more effective, and appeared to be just helpful, had you left the sarcastic slur out of it.

You write eloquently, but you will find much better acceptance if you don't try to tell people how you want your answers fashioned, or criticize when they aren't fashioned exactly the way you want them...that is just a bit too self centered and arrogant.

Just remember kindness goes a lot further than sarcasm in this community.

OK..just got my GT683 devlivered and got it cranked up. Couple questions:
    1) Why is the blue battery indicator under the mouse pad blinking blue?
    2) Why don't my quick launch buttons work? I got the wifi on...and the LED works on occasion...but the Turbo and the Fan Boost wont do anything?

Are there drivers I need to load?

OK...never mind I got the quick keys working. :D
Now I just need to know if the blinking blue battery light is normal.

Also...even though it's plugged in the battery icon in the sys tray says "Plugged in, not charging"???
    What the eff???

    Thanks.

    Hello,

    I ordered the GT683 841US.

It has a 750GB hard drive.

The search function for this thread doesn't seem to work. Can some please tell me the exact make and model of said hard drive?

Also, I read in this thread as well as in the MSI specs that the GT683 comes with a 150w power bar. The Newegg product page says 180w. I think it's actually 150w, but how does this matter exactly?

    Thanks!

They usually use Western Digital 750GB 7,200RPM drives, but not always.

It should come with a 180W AC Adapter.

Thanks! Do you know the exact model and specs by any chance?

Another question: What's the max amount of DDR3 1333MHz RAM it can handle with the 2670QM? I'm seeing 32GB on MSI's site and 16GB on Intel's specs for the CPU :s

It will support 32GB as long as you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.

Paladin is actually incorrect. The Intel specifications page says specifically that it cannot use anymore than 16gb. This is also stated on XoticPC's website when you're customizing your laptop.

well according to me ,,its because u have not placed the battery right(or there is some problem with ur battery if u r very unlucky),,,cuz it blinks blue when ur battery is almost totally drained or if u running the laptop without the battery, directly through power,,,,,
And like in ur case the battery icon will show "plugged in,not charging " when there is no battery in the battery compartment to charge,,,
    hop this helps.
