Perfect. So do I. What you do in order to change the DPI is scroll up to the top right corner where the Wrench is for your settings. Scroll down to where it says "Zoom" and choose your DPI level. I have found 120% looks perfect on 1080 displays.

@jrwingate6, what do you think of these two

    GX660, 15.6" 1366x768, i5-520, 8gb, 500gb, hd 5870 1gb gddr5, $930
    GT683, 15.6" 1920x720, i5-2410, 8gb, 500gb, gtx 560m 1gb gddr5, $1150

GX660 chassis is also the same with GT683, do you think that the $220 price difference worth it?

    Hello,

Gaming system noob here. I've pretty much decided to purchase the GT683, but I'm torn on the choice of screens.

What is the difference between the glossy screen and the 95% NTSC Color Gamut Matte LCD? Does the latter have any significant advantages? Is it worth the extra $100? I have decided to not go with the standard matte screen and upgrade to one of the other two. So what are the pros and cons between the glossy and the enhanced matte LCD?

Also, what are everyone's thoughts between the 570m and 580m? Is the difference worth the heft price increase or is it negligible? Mostly going to be running SWTOR as of now with possibly expanding to other games in the near future.

    Thanks everyone!

What do you think about this?

    MSI Barebones MS-16F2:

    15" Full HD 1080p display
    CPU = i5 2430
    GPU = GTX 570m
    RAM = 8gb DDR3
    HDD = 750gb 7200rpm

    Full Price Shipped $1109

You could also upgrade this system to a i7 2670 if you want and it would bump the price to $1258. The i5 should be good enough for gaming though. The GTX 570m blows both of those cards away by a mile.

The 95% NTSC Color Gamut Matte LCD (AU OB156HW01 V4) screen shows many more colors and they are incredibly vibrant. It is also a brighter screen with better viewing angles. Once you see one you won't want anything else, so if it fits your budget I would say go for it :)

To all GT683 owners, hi and good day to all of you :)

I have a question, do you play on 1080p or do you lowered your reso?

Someone told me that playing on 1600x900 on 15.6" is much better than 1080p because 1080p is meant for 17" gaming.

^__^ No, that is not true at all. Full HD (1920x1080) works well on either screen size.

Really depends on your GPU to be honest, and the framerate you want since gaming in 1080p is very demanding.

    Hi everyone!
I'm new to this forum and looking for some help. Got myself a GT683DX recently.
The problem is while playing Crysis 2 the game looks only ok on FHD but on 1366x768 it looks blurred for some reason, although on my friends laptop (some ASUS model, don't know exactly) 1366x768 it looks nice - both our screens are 15,6" and 16:9. And I noticed also that there is no option to put 1600x900 resolution although the screen aspect ratio is 16:9?

Laptop screens only look the clearest when they are running at their native resolution. The same thing applies to desktop computer monitors as well. It's just a characteristic of the technology. That's why 1920x1080 looks clear on your display and why 1366x768 does not. Anything below 1920x1080 on your display will look more and more fuzzy the lower you drop the resolution.

Most likely, the reason your friends display looks clearer at 1366x768 compared to yours is because his display has a max resolution of 1366x768. Screen size and aspect ratio will have no bearing on clarity, only the native (max) resolution.

Thanks! So even though it is an anti glare it is still better than the regular glossy?

What about the 570M vs 580M? Worth the $300 difference? Mostly going to be playing SWTOR as of now.

Ah thanks alot. So I can stop searching for solutions on the web. But one thing remains unclear for me why I don't have the option to switch to 1600x900?

    EDIT*
Oh and what state is more energy efficient, windows default power saver or the turbo battery mode on eco?

1600x900 is not a default resolution. its a custom resolution and while ur desktop may support it, many games wont. the original resolution, or default perse, is 1440x900 also known as 900p, which is a 16:10 resolution.

turbo battery mode is the same as power saver, when u touch turbo echo mode windows enters power saver. its the same. i would recommend changing from eco mode since its all just a touch away.

@meaker : hi meaker, since u already hve gtx 570m, if you still remember gtx 560m, this is the score i can pull out (rep me if it beat the hd 5850/5870 heavily overclocked or the highest of gtx 560m u ever seen). peace :D

most game supports 1600x900 but the screen itself doesn't (for desktop display), maybe thats wat he meant

When it comes to Glossy and Matte, it comes down to personal preference and usage conditions. If you use your laptop a lot in rooms with windows or areas with bright florescent lighting, I would suggest you get the matte display. If you usually use your laptop in areas lit with normal household lighting then the matte display is not necessary. There are pro's and cons of both. All things being equal (same display/same gamut), the glossy display will always have a higher contrast ratio, darker blacks and more accurate colors. This is due to the matte film placed over a anti-glare display. It works by diffusing light from outside sources but inherently, it also diffuses light from the inside (the backlight). Glossy displays also come in handy if your the type of person who likes bright vibrant colors. A common misconception is that all glossy displays are said to have eye popping colors. While they are capable of eye popping colors which some like, the eye popping colors are due to improper calibration. These people usually have the brightness/color/contrast jacked up to 100%.

I don't know if you remember or not but when flat panel TV's started becoming popular, most all of them were matte displays. TV manufacturers did this because most people complained about glare (especially when watching from angles). As time went on, technology improved and the glossy film changed. Most TV's made today (especially the high end ones) have glossy panels due to color accuracy and being able to achieve a higher contrast ratio. The glossy film today is a little different from the glossy film earlier this decade. The glossy film today is able to diffuse some sources of light (not as much as a matte film) and some can diffuse more light than others such as the glossy film used on Samsung's high end TV's such as the PN59D7000. They call this special glossy film (Real Black Filter). In the fallowing link, scroll down to where it talks about the Real Black Filter and you will get a better idea of what it does. Hello All,

I recently bought this machine, and overall im really happy about the performance of this baby.

I was talking to a store rep from i bought the laptop, and he told that if you have an i5 cpu you cant upgrade it to an i7 cpu since it use a different mb.

Anone knows if this is true? can a gt683dx machine with an i5 cpu be upgraded to an i7?

    Cheers.

Does anyone know if MSI has different heatsinks for i5 CPU's?

My laptop came with an i5, and the copper seems much cheaper than the copper on the GPU heatsink.

I know the shape of the heatsinks are the same. It just seems like there'd be a reason for them using much cheaper copper on the CPU heatsink than on the GPU heatsink.

The i5's have much lower TDP's, so they'd have the option of using cheaper heatsinks for the i5's than the i7's.

The CPU heatsink is made out of lighter copper that seems to hollow; when compared to the GPU heatsink:

My 16f2 came also with i5 and what you say is totally rationnal. However, I honestly don't see any difference between my gpu and cpu copper heatsink.

As long as both my gpu and cpu are well cooled down, I'm happy! :)

Just get a 180W adapter with 5.5x2.5mm power tip (Li Shin or Targus), it's definitely enough for 6990m/580m.
I modified my power tip with my 220w adapter to make it work with my 16f2 just to make sure I have enough power to game with high clocks.

My CPU runs at about the same temps as my GPU, maxing out around 86°C or so at 3.2GHz and ~70W.

But I expect my CPU to be at least 10°C degrees lower than my GPU, so that's not cool enough. And if I ever do find a way to overclock the multiplers, it won't be nearly cool enough.

So I was thinking, if this CPU has double the TDP of the i5, I should make sure this heatsink isn't one designed with only i5's in mind.

If the copper on your GPU and CPU heatsinks looks and feels the same, then that's definitely different from mine.

Let me double check tonight, I definitely see what you mean as when I disassembled my Asus G73jh, I could notice the very poor quality of the copper they use for their heatsinks...incredibly light, look very cheap, it doesn't surprise me why the cooling was less efficient in the asus than mine in the 16f2 even though there were 2 separate fans..

But If I remember well, the cooper (cpu/gpu) in 16f2 looked very similar if not identical, but worth double checking.

@paul : is it really enough?let's say i have 570m with overvolted and core 835mhz. can it supply?coz with this 560m, the cpu sometimes throttle to compensate my 150 watt PSU.

PS : got the heatsink for gx 660R (ati 5870m). is it fine for gtx 570m?
now the hardest thing is how to get a gtx 570m mxm T__T

Hi guys. New here. I have the GT683DXR and think it's a fantastic gaming laptop. Quick question though. Has anyone had any issues with the screen all of a sudden freezing? It never happens when gaming, but when i am doing something simple like checking email the screen will freeze and while the touch buttons up top still work, nothing else does. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't do anything. The only thing you can do is power it off.

It doesn't happen much, but it has happened a few times this week. Thought I would check here if anyone else had this issue.

    Hi Guys,

New to the forum but have had my gt683r since 8-4-2011. I am having trouble with my ac adapter. I am not sure if it's a short in the cord or where the plug goes in to the laptop but it has to be a certain angle to charge. Anyone else have this issue yet. Just started on me a few days ago really annoying. Does anyone know of a website to order a new power supply? I am hoping its not the plug on the laptop side.

To date it never happened to me, but it happened quite often on my old Asus N80, never tried to find a solution since it was old. It was pretty frustrating since you couldnt do anything you had to siwtch it off.

Hey guys - an update to my MSI GT683DXR notebook screen -

I was whining about those microscopic grids on my default screen that came with my notebook. Donald suggested AUOB156HW01 95% NTSC 15.6" gamut screen.

Just installed it today and boy it looks fantastic. The screen has very bright colors and I think it also has a light source on the top as well as the bottom.
The color inversion is not as bad as the cheap TN screens. All the microscopic grids are gone~~~

This notebook is now perfect for me :)

If your screen was as bad as mine, do upgrade your screen! You won't be disappointed!

The bonus is that their customer service at powernotebooks is top notch. :)

Hi everyone. Exactly a week ago, I bought my new GT683-R2. I paid 1.875 US dollars/1.182 ponds/1.425 euros including TAX.

Along with the laptop came a very nice backpack. Fits the laptop exactly and has excellent padding inside-out to protect the machine. There was also MSI Superior Gaming Mouse and a coupon to download Dirt3.

I couldn't pay another 250 dollars to get the SSD version or pay another 1000$ to get GT683DX with GTX 570M.

I play Flight Simulator X, WoW, SCII, CoH, NFS:MW. All the settings maxed out (the highest the game allows. i.e.: ultra if there is. with Full HD) I get 60 or more FPS with VSync.
BTW: I haven't updated any drivers yet. Everything is stock. Except Nvidia, driver version is: ForceWare: 295.73

I have some questions about the chasis/body build quality and drivers.

    On my system:

    1. ICONS: lower right corner of the hdd light under the touchpad doesn't light. The icon does not completely illuminate. The other icons (bluetooth, wi-fi, battery, and sleep) light completely.

    2. LEDS: when you look at the front leds, the right led fits in its housing perfectly. When you look at the left led, I see a black plastic. it doesnt fit in its housing perfectly like the right one.

    3. TOUCHPAD: there was a tiny gap between the upper corner of the touching area and the silver plastic frame around the touchpad. I pressed down the silver plastic frame all aorund and the gap almost completely dissapeared. Probably it wasn't sticking well. probably the assembler at the factory neglected it.

Do you have any problems like these? With what I've paid, I've been expecting a flawless piece of equipment. Am I being too picky? What do you think?

    My final question is:

Live Update 5 program suggests a driver update for Realtek Audio driver but the thing doesn't install it, saying that the update doesnt apply to my hardware. Is this a bug?

Thanks in advance for your replies! Cheers! :)

    Specs:Intel i7-2670QM 6 MB 2.20 GHz, GTX 560M 1.5 GB GDDR5 192 Bit, 1.5 TB HDD RAID 0 (WD Scorpio Black 750GBx2, 16 MB 7200 RPM), 12 GB Nanya Elixir PC3-10700 RAM 685 MHz (4GBx3) 15.6" Full HD (Glossy LED)

Greetings NBR, I have a couple questions that I'd appreciate help with:

    1) Do any of the gt680/683/685 Models come with a backlit keyboard, or is that limited to the gt783 variants or Msi1761 Barebone (with optional steelseries kb) ?

    2) Also if i ordered a gt683dx from one of the top resellers and customized the processor to a 2960xm, would it automatically have bios overclocking enabled ( I assume not sadly)? At the least would programs like throttestop have unlocked multipliers? I've read of members like 5482741 having had problems overclocking extreme processors, and the risk of not having fully unlocked Cpu overclocking is worrisome if I'd shell out top dollar for the upgrade.

The reason I require an extreme processor over either a 2670 or 2760 is due to demanding emulators like Pcsx2 and Dolphin, where 4ghz+ on all 4 cores is necessary to to maintain full speed on the most demanding games. With that said graphic cards aren't a huge priority and the 570m should suffice for high internal resolutions.

Assuming that the Xtreme processors can be overclocked without hassle, would the IC Diamond thermal upgrade thats provided allow 4ghz+ overclocks while keeping reasonable max temps under full load ( 85c< ) without the need for additional repasting/modifications (including changing the 180 Psu that comes standard)?

Would greatly appreciate input from Gt683/Gt783 owners or any of the venerable Resellers, and will +rep for the enlightenment!

no point getting an xm processor for the MSI you can't overclock it you can on a dell. Running xmp profile ram allows a 4% increase and that's about it.

570M is a good card and can be overclocked quiet well you will see max around p16k on vatnage for the 570m

Appreciate the helpful response James, even though its disheartening to know that I'd be forced to look at a non ideal "solution" such as the behemoth sized and overpriced m18x, or the m17x which would require a manual upgrade to an Xm Cpu. Both of those options also lack an ideal Gpu like the 570m, as the 560m is mediocre, and the 580m/6990m are overkill for my needs.

I guess if no acceptable current gen options are available i can wait till later this year when Ivy Bridge finally gets released, and the top gaming laptops get refreshed.

I will be ordering the GT683DXR-603 today from powernotebooks. Going with a bump up to 16 mb ram and an SSD as my primary drive. Decided to stick with the glossy display as I am more comfortable in that while doing Photoshop work. Hoping the 570M will be just what I need in BF3 and SWTOR. With the upgrades it's coming up to about 1670 USD with the cash discount.

I appreciate everyone's help here! Especially Donald, who first answered my question here and then helped out on the phone. I WILL be coming back to them for future purchases.

I don't believe they come with backlit keyboards. From my research, I found a couple of barebones builds that offer backlit, but that's it. I've done a lot of research and checked out reviews before settling on purchasing this system. Most seem to be happier with this keyboard rather than the Steelseries offered on the GT780.

The 17.3" MSI GT78x series (MS 1761) is the only MSI model series that has a backlit keyboard either standard or optional. There are no 15.6" MSI models with a backlit keyboard.

For 15.6" with a backlit keyboard look to the ASUS G53SX-DH71, or the about to be released Sager Ivy Bridge models.

I just pulled the trigger on this laptop with the 2760QM chip. Finally decided I didn't need the 17" screen and the financial saving was significant. I bought this lappy pretty much exclusively for Diablo 3 and the extra portability is needed because I travel alot. It looks really good too.
