I'm still on stock drivers at the moment, and added a custom resolution of 1920x1080@120hz which is what I assume you did. I don't know if Win7 aero uses vsync or not, anyone else know? Using Windows+tab I can get over 100 according to fraps, but without knowing if vsync is on or off it doesn't help much.

I did notice that the "monitor" tab in device manager does show 120hz as a valid option too.

I tried the Heaven benchmarks that came on the machine since I'm still copying my Steam folder over so I can't try any real games. It didn't like the custom resolution for some reason and always reverted back to 1680x1050, so that may not be a good sign, or just could be some wierd issue I happened to come across with heaven.

I will test a real game as soon as my copy is done. I am intrigued by what I've seen already. If by some miracle our displays will do 120hz I will be extremely happy, and really surprised.

    *******************
    Update
After messing around a bit I found out that adding that custom resolution/refresh in windows made tha 1920x1080 disappear in ALL games. So while it looked like it worked at the windows desktop (or maybe vsync is disabled in aero), I could not even test it on a single game. I had to remove the custom mode just to get back to 1920x1080@60 and re-enable it in my games and verified all was back to normal. I also tried 75hz in there just for the heck of it.

I don't understand why it lets us enable it, and it passes the test when creating it. Who knows, but I have given up on it actually running at 120hz. Oh well, it was worth trying :)

So I guess I will end up returning mine :( After talking to Donald at PowerNotebooks.com, I decided that returning it would be the best thing. I'm now back in the market for another laptop, but I haven't decided if I will still go with the GT683DXR.

One thing is for certain, if I order anything from here on out, it will definitely be with PowerNotebooks.com, as Donald and the crew there are pleasurable, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful from beginning to end. I definitely recommend anyone thinking about getting this laptop to order there, as Donald told me this was merely the second problematic MSI laptop he's dealt with since starting business with them.

I decided to try another game after reading your message. OK now I agree, there is something to this.

I am able to play Battlefield Bad Co 2 with vsync on and when I played with settings (except I had to leave it on 1920x1080, my custom 120 hz res) I could get 100+ fps. I turned vsync on and off in game, and verified it is working. I could see tearing when off and ZERO tearing when on. So I take back my initial resopnse above. I do think we are seeing 120 hz for real. Wonder if that means we can view 3D on our displays? :D

It acts goofy, as the first 4 games I tried I couldn't even pick the resolution, but when I tried just now with a 5th game it worked. Weird.

Just tried Alien vs Predator, also get 100+ FPS with vsync on and verified no tearing.

yah i have nvidia 3d stuff so ill try to hook that up tomorrow after work since i have to wake up at 4:30 am to get rdy for work. But yah this is weird but also looking at nvidia control patern there isnt any option for 3d so maybe these are 120hz but not 3d. which i will still be very happy with since 3d does get annoying everyonce in awhile

Hey guys, just got the 683R. I noticed that when I unplug the power and start playing games, it's not using the card to it's fullest potential. I will drop frames from 40fps to 15fps. If I plug in the power cord, it jumps back up. Do you know where the setting is to keep the card running at full speed? I've tried changing the power settings to High performance but still no good.

It could be that the 570m does not run at full speed on battery, not sure. I looked around and the only setting I saw was was the pci express "link power state" in the advanced power settings, but I don't think that is going to help.

I plan to game when plugged in, and when I'm on battery I want to save as much power as possible so it goes for as long as it can. Like if I take it to work and don't bring the power brick I'd rather get a few hours use (no games) than one hour on full power.

I'm not sure if it works, but you can try this out. Still should play games while being plugged, otherwise battery life will be very short lol.

could someone post some temps on the GT683R,from the reviews it seems the GPU and CPU are well cooled but it gets quite hot on the surface,in the upper case.

Hey guys, I've been watching this thread for a few days. :)

And am very interested to know if these (MSI GT683DXR-423US)-as listed on ebay - machines are 3d capable in terms of the screen that is. ?

Also what does the 570m corrolate to in desktop terms.

Is ebay a trusted and secure way to go about an import?

Sorry for all the questions, im new and want to make sure im getting the right machine as im all the way from south africa :) - so importing all the way!

    Appreciate any help.

The stock screen isn't 3d capable, and I haven't seen resellers offering it. I'm not sure of the perfomance of the 570m, but it should do fine and it looks like it's gonna OC well.

I'd recommend buying off a reseller, some in the usa will ship to South Africa I believe, ebay isn't the best to buy electronic stuff.

I'll take this one since I came across this info (think it was from notebookcheck.com). The 570m is similar to a desktop 550TI or a 560. I haven’t gotten into overclocking yet but keep in mind there is a ton of room to overclock with low starting clocks and low temps overall.

The 570m at stock is most similar to an underclocked Desktop GTX 460 768. (with twice the GDDR5)

Multiple people have moved the clocks up to full desktop GTX460 768 clocks and beyond by just moving an overclocking slider.

Note please, comparing a mobile GPU vs a desktop GPU is a tad tricky, as most desktop GPUs compared have OC'd 4GHz i5/i7s behind them whereas mobile GPUs have mobile ~3GHz stock clocked i7s.

Desktop 550TI is much closer to the 560m due to the lower shader count (192). The 570m should out-perform the Desktop 550Ti based upon GPU potency alone.

Desktop GTX 560 (not the Ti) is close, but has noticably higher clocks and 256-bit memory as compared to the 192-bit of the 570m.

its a bummer about 3d as its nice to have a beastly machine thats awesome as an entertainment machine.

It is a very nice machine with only a couple downsides from my perspective. It’s feature rich with a good sandy bridge I7, tons of ram, plenty of storage, USB 3.0, very nice screen and of course the GTX570m. It’s got great battery life, 3 hrs or so depending on settings (many gaming laptops are closer to 1 hr, maybe 2 at most). LED’s are a nice touch, as is the turbo button for people that don’t want to screw with overclocking, and the extra fan setting is nice too.

It’s only missing one feature I wanted, backlit keyboard. Another feature it’s lacking in 3D screen. Preliminary tests seem to indicate it can do 120 hz refresh, which is not common on laptops (need more people and more test first to absolutely confirm). All found in a 15” form factor for well under 2k. Good bang for the buck.

For owners of the 683R, is there a way to make change the font size of windows without adjusting the dpi? Like in the old windows where you can select the actual point size instead of choosing 100%, 125% or 150%?

Those scores are exactly where they should be, except the graphics scores are usually 7.3 at stock settings. You must have yours overclocked to get 7.4

No, the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M w/1.5GB GDDR5 is a good 13% or so faster than the 560M.

iam ending up returning the msi gt 683 dxr-423us. The thing is insanely powerful but its a bit to flashy for me. To many different colors on it. I trading it in for a sager 8150 that has a 6990 8 gigs which i ll trade out wit h1600 ram also its the same price for 3 times the speed in video power. Other than it being to flashy for me this laptop is amazing. Dont let this move you away from buying it. If you like the looks then this laptop will do almost anything you throw at it. Just a blacked out sager with a 6990 is sexy and will do just that much better. Also i noticed earlier on my screen i hve a little bit black plastic at the top of the screen under the camera that over hangs over the screen a little bit. It looks like not all the plastic got removed from the black frame when this was made. Cant remove it without damaging the screen.

Hi, Noob here. I just got my GT683DXR and i was wondering if there were any updated drivers for it from Nvidia? On their website it shows driver updates for the 560M as well as the 580M but It just says none found for the 570M?

    Is this normal?

The looks I cannot argue as its subjective.. but same price?
    -The lowest 8150 with a 6990m that I found is $1800.
-The lowest 683DXR with similar stats to that 8150 except GPU is $1500.
(you can get discounts like student and cash-only, but they can be applied to both)

The 6990m is faster as its one notch better... but its not even close to 3 times faster.

The 570m has another additional bonus... it runs frosty in comparison to the 6990m which at stock runs 10 degrees hotter than the 570m highly overclocked (Kenshiro style).

In my case, I have to wait, but for me the 8150 loses out due to not having that second HDD bay without removing the Optical drive.

I really wish the 15" MSI barebones unit would come out with a 570m.

KP and I may have argued the positioning of these chips but they are all going to come within a few % of each other to the point where paying large sums is just not worth it.

Options like SSDs, bluray players and ram become more important along with preferences for design.

It's a shame there is not a barebone for the 683DXR for those who prefer the design.

Anyone is running the new 280 drivers??? there is a thread where the user reports the FAILURE of the turbo button, when updating to drivers 275 and up and therefore eliminating the option to overclock the GPU.

    Someone experiencing this??

EDIT: just to clarify: i know the turbo button doesnt actually overclock, but it needs to be on in order to overclock manually from msi afterburner. the prob is the new drivers disable turbo feature.

Then use Nvidia inspector. Lets you overclock any profile (including 2d lol).

Lets you properly clock the memory too.

My turbo button works fine with the 280.28 drivers. Works both with and without overclock.

The only issue I have found, and I haven't confirmed it's due to the drivers or not, is my screen brightness control sometimes works/sometimes not. It was stuck on lowest the other day and it was drvining me nuts. Now it's stuck on high so not bothering me as much.

I have heard of some issues aswell. but have had none with a nvidia 555m. so it maybe has to do with the 570m/560m. will test later.

Ok, so this is defenitely a TDE software error. perhaps an update from msi is needed. did the brightness control prob occur before 28?? in that case rollback to the 280 betas and see if it fixes it.

what i care of a driver is increase in performance, stability and u should also have a look at temps in full load since they vary from driver to driver.

    thank you

I could be wrong, but I beleive that may be stock vs stock clocks. The thing is I've heard the 560 is clocked much higher by default and does not overclock well. Compared to the 570 that is clocked much lower by default and overclocks very well. That could widen the gap by quite a bit more.

id say much more than 13%. still 13 is alot at stock clocks. with some overclocking this cardo will run as good as the 485m and still run cool.

so yeah, its that good. still less than the 580m but definitely best performance per dollar

For what it's worth, when I run my 570m at 700/1400/1800, it's faster than my 485m at stock.
