After skimming around for peoples thoughts on other options I found this pretty interesting tidbit.
I'll give this a shot for one more repaste but it's gonna be annoying having to wait a whole week to know the result.Jonathan Dubois and Vasudev like this. -
Question: So i decided to send in a warranty request to MSI. While I have achieved no throttling temps, I just can't get past the fact that 3 of the 6 core temps are registering 15-20C higher than the other 3 when stress testing. If all six core where within 5C I would be golden since the 3 lower temps never exceed 80C.
Anyway, anyone have experience sending a unit for repair in the US. Do they do a good job? I was so careful when I did the repaste to put everything back exactly as it was which was a lot (pieces of tape, routing the wires, etc) I get worried they won't be as meticulous.
Importantly, what would you suggest I do before sending it out (I have not received a reply yet, just getting ready). Should i undo the undervolt and uninstall Throttlestop? I assume they need to login, how do I clear my password? My thought was to run the MSI backup I made AFTER creating a system image. This way they receive the unit as it was out of the factory and when I get it back I can restore the image.
Any advice on what I should do before sending for repair assuming I do?
Thanks! -

If it passes burn-in tests by MSI RMA then they will most likely return the system back to you as is.
You should clear the password for them to log in but they also use their own test HDD/SSD to factor out any OS issues.
So if there's OS-related issue and MSI RMA sees that they don't have issues with the stock OS except customer's then they will ask customer that if they can wipe the OS or not. -
Can you help me understand "burn in tests" How do you "pass" i.e. would a 20 degree difference in core temps under load be considered passable? Thanks

You have to be able to make a case out of a problem which is not allowing the system to run normally.
When you do, they may actually swap the processor out. -
Hmm, my thought is it is related to the heat sink not a bad processor. I suppose 3 out of 6 cores preventing me from playing games without throttling on a gaming laptop would qualify as not running normally. We will see. Thanks
-
I sent mine in to HIDevolution who sent it to MSI for repair. It took 3 weeks to get back. I’d say MSI does a great job IMO.
It also depends on who you purchased the laptop from.

Try to reseat the heatsink if you want, if that doesn't resolve it then have MSI check it. -
Did any one encounter any problems while shutting down this laptop?
I was trying to intall ubuntu, disabled secure boot and fastboot, created some new paritions etc, played around with the ubuntu setup, but never actually installed ubuntu (dual boot)
Now whenever I try to shutdown the laptop, the screen goes black but the laptop doesn't actually shut down, the fans are on, power delivery through usb ports is on (the laptop cooling connected to it pad keeps running) and the white light stays on forever.
I have to shutdown by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.
Any fix?
Thanks,

my battery were charging properly but idk why it started making a problem, when the battery hits 99% it never goes to 100% but it continues charging so this means the battery overcharging itself and i dont know why and from where this problem came and dont have any ideas of how to fix it! will be very thankful if someone which such experience tell me what to do! thanks ( my laptop is msi gs65 as the forum name is
)

Use AIDA64 to verify battery life and wear level. -
Hey,
I updated the bios to the latest not much problem with daily usage but my idle temps seems to have increased after that and the fans kick in more often.
Has anyone experienced the same?
Can I revert to the old Bios? If yes, is there any extra steps I need to do or its same as updating to new Bios?
Thank you! -
This arrived in the mail!!! Will report back in a few days. Maybe I'll get around to it tonight.

Without surrounding thermal pads. I removed the 3 VRM pads and the 2 mm pads above those (the ones over the black component over the R22s components.)

Not 100 scientific but I did my best to keep it static and kept reusing the same 2 sheets.
This is with me bending the retention arm up on HS. (Rightmost arm)
The best I could get were these last two photos.
GPU with all its pads. And CPU with top pads removed all on new pressure paper.

Some early performance numbers for RTX 2080 Max-Q
Take these numbers with a grain of salt since he didn't run the same loop with each test.
When compared to a 2070 with ray tracing on, it has similar performance.
https://www.hardocp.com/article/2018/12/17/battlefield_v_nvidia_ray_tracing_rtx_2070_performance/4
So, for now, i'm gonna say it SEEMS faster than a GTX 1080 and about the same speed as a desktop RTX 2070.
Personally, I'm happy with that.Last edited: Jan 16, 2019 -
Day 0: (Repasted and removed thermal pads just north of the CPU die (3 VRMs and the 2 CM strech of 2mm pads covering the little black components above the 3 R22 components)

I fully expect my GTX1080 performance from the Max Q 2080, accounting for reduced performance due to power limits/clocks, and additional power limits for being max q. It should, in theory, have better 4K performance which is good.Falkentyne and JRey like this.

That’s what I’m expecting as well.
I wonder what the overclocking performance will be.
The RTX 2070 Max-Q and 2080 Max-Q will come with a 230w power brick (2060 will come with 180).
I’m hoping that the card can overclock closer to non MaxQ levels but we’ll see.
I was able to get my Max-Q GTX 1070 to 1645 boost at .800v.

Well, I am sending my unit for repair. I have an RMA number. This is stressful because I LOVE this machine and it is performing tremendously other than one specific problem I just can't get over. While undervolting and repasting reduced my temps and stopped most throttling, I am not satisfied because 3 cores consistently run 15-20C hotter than the other 3 under load. From what I've learned in here, this is a cpu seating problem or a heatsink problem. I hope MSI fixes it. From the recent posts from @xLima it looks like the heatsink could be my problem and his testing shows how difficult it is to get proper contact. I suppose if it comes back no worse it can't hurt to try. BTW, they initially ignored my request until I called them and told them I had reached 95C. They didn't seem to care about the variance, just the max temp but in my case if they fix the max temp, they will likely fix the variance. We will see. Gonna miss my unit. I did a full backup and will remove my undervolt prior to shipping. Wish me luck
-
I hope you get it fixed. You can tell them specific tests that show how easy it is to see the temp variance and max temp. Once they send it back to you, test it again to see if temps improved. Worst case you can learn to repaste your machine, which I know a lot of users don't want to do but this way you can also ensure a proper job.
I hope it does get fixed and returned to you asap

glad I was able to help some people with MSI's convex heatsinks and the pads lowering pressure problem.ryzeki likes this. -
Thanks, yeah, I attached a note with the return paperwork showing them what tests I ran, the temps, etc with screenshots. BTW, I did a re-paste already. It helped and I was able to stop most throttling but the AIDA test still throttled (not as bad and the XTU test did not throttle at all) and it was the same 3 cores as before the re-paste so Its clear what the problem is, the heatsink is not making proper contact or the cpu is not seated correctly. This is not an easy fix so I am not hopeful, getting the proper contact is an art as much as a science. 20C variance is temps is concerning enough to give it a go though, don't think they can make it any worse. Good thing I still have my old laptop, shipping it tomorrow.ryzeki likes this.

You think those 6 components will need thermal pads? (3 R22s components and the 3 black components above them)?
(1.5mm pads make contact but seem to affecting HS mounting pressure. 1.0mm pads do not make contact with heatsink)

Chokes don't need pads. Any paste will work instead.
VRMs I really don't know. I used 0.5mm pads on them instead of the stock 1mm pads with no problems even with a high overclock. If the pads are interfering, you could try a thick thermal paste instead. I don't know hot they run, and I have no knowledge of third party probes that can read it.xLima likes this. -
Error in Windows Update, anyone else failing to install this update or any who has successfully installed it? I am thinking it maybe a precursor to 1809.

Can you install the normal patches? What Windows build are you on now? Tried to see if you can manual install latest Services Stack patch? If you have it, it won't install.

If it isn't too much to ask, could you share how you overclocked and undervolted your 1070 Max-Q?
-
Did you also try windows update asistant? I did that on my gaming laptop from 1803 and ultrabook, on ultrabook it was even from 1603 after i did Factory reset for SSD upgrade. Save tons effort and time.

No problem. I’ll send a screenshot of my voltage curve when I get home today.

Looking at the new Cooler Boost Trinity+ design, will the i7-8750H be adequately cooled since it has only one heatpipe?

Don't expect miracles
Probably a reason you don't see these with a 8850H and RTX 2080 -
The new GS 65 is expected to be configurable with the RTX 2070 and the RTX 2080 (both in Max-Q version, obviously). Deep undervolting and repasting coming...?
Finally they designed a slim 230W AC adapter, just a couple of centimeters longer than the 180W.
In Italy I can see the RTX 2070 version is coming on 29th January, € 2500, slightly more expensive than the GTX 1070 version at the beginning (the pre-order was even cheaper).
It's heavier than the GTX 1070 version: 1,9 kg vs 1,79 kg. Bigger heatpipes? Thicker chassis?Last edited: Jan 20, 2019 -
I’ll be all over that too lol
