I've been reading through the thread and there seems to be an issue with heatsink contact with the current GS65 on the Cpu side. Hopefully that will get fixed too on the RTX GS65.

After repasting my CPU with CM MasterGel Maker Nano and refraining from benching it for 1 week I can report that the performance is exactly the same as a fresh repaste at this point in time. Not sure if benching/stressing it will now degrade the paste faster as I've seen it's done in the past but I've been told this shouldn't be the case with the one week settling in period.

I use CM mastergel maker nano and kryonaut interchangeably when doing repastes and I've never seen any degradation in thermal performance from benching or stress testing on either paste.

I can confirm Honky's finding on degradation after about a 1 to 2 month period, when bench testing was done on day 0 of repaste (granted our sample size is 2). I am still on day 4 after fresh repaste and have yet to stress test the system.

I will report back after day 7, and paste my temperatures.

I have noticed temperatures as high as 85°C but I was without aircon with an ambient temperature of 32°C.

This temperature was transient and not sustained. Overall I feel it is performing to spec.

Speaking of repasting, how does LM do on the uneven heatsink of the GS65?

Everytime I plug in headphones (ordinary 3,35mm) and then unplug them my speakers won't work. Sound is registered in the volume controller but the speakers are silent. Any idea what's up?

I faced a problem with MSI provided realtek drivers where plugging in the headphones caused BSOD so I searched the Internet and found an updated driver and my issue was solved.

I believe the issue you are facing is related to the drivers as well. Try to uninstall-reinstall or uninstall-update.

    Hope this helps!

I asked in the P65 Creator's thread as I am looking to get one. Coming from HORRIBLE XPS15 9570. Need a new laptop NEXT week, so I cannot wait for RTX.

The GS75 is a goddess beauty but super crazy expensive in Sweden, 2900 Euro for RTX 2070.

What are the flaws/issues with the GS/P65 ? With the XPS there is only issues and nothing good about it. I rather not step into the same hole again as I am in desperate need for a working machine for school. Mostly doing MS office and web surfing, but I would like to play CSGO and Pubg sometimes. I am looking at the GTX 1070 model.

Do you have S3 sleep? (not modern standby)
How's the battery life at idle and surfing the web? I can see the charging time are extremely long.
FANS, can you control them? Potentially turn them off completely?

    Power and thermal throttling?

    • GS65 2018/04 and earlier manufacturing dates have an issue with the keyboard and a rivet. It's an easy fix and if the computer is new you shouldn't have issues provided you do the preventive tweak. This was addressed in 2019-07 builds

    • With tweaks can get 8 hours of battery life - this is with PCMark8 - Office Battery Test (Requires modifying options in Advanced BIOS setting - Requieres Unlock Code) [My battery profile was not as aggressive as I could make it, Base clock is 800 MHz with boosting allowed up to 1.6 MHz]
    • You are allowed to set a custom fan curve, you can use Dragon Center (I recommend you uninstall if you plan on tweaking, undervolting) or Silent Options (Can run fans from as low as 1951 RPM @ ~43 dB to 6075 RPM @ ~67 dB (CPU)| 6400 RPM @ 67 dB (GPU) - 150% Fan speed. Not sure if OFF is an option, I think minimum speed is 1951 = 0% Fan speed, perhaps BIOS will overwrite user settings. The GPU fan MAY turn off, not sure.

Other flaws include uneven heatsink where the HS doesn't make adequate contact with CPU die resulting in a core differential that can vary from a few degrees, some users reported temperature differentials of 20°C. So 3 of your cores may run a lot hotter, hit thermal limit and you will thermal throttle. This gets better with UV and repaste, YMMV.

Out of the box this thing runs hot (the CPU) but repaste and UV lowers the temperatures by a considerable amount. If you want, you could lower temperature by disabling turbo or lower max turbo frequency and stay in the high 70s low 80s.

BIG THANKS for that :) Good to see deepsleep (S3) is supported and working.

8 hours? That is great! I mean it is afterall a 82Watt battery, Dell ships it with 97W but it only charges to 92, so the difference isn't that huge. Not many laptops have anything over 80 at all...

I believe that if fans could be turned off that would be a huge battery saver in the long run. I have no issue with underclocking in TS, but I would definitely rather avoid repaste in the MSI, as I've seen how it looks under the hood and damn it looks messy hahaha Motherboard flipped upside down, doesn't look too easy to repaste.

I feel pretty sold on this one right now. If you have anything to add, any issues that I should know of or something, let me know :)

Maybe out of the box you will get just shy of 6 hours of battery

The repaste is not as difficult as they make it seem. Takes maybe 10 minutes to take the laptop apart. I have done it like 8 times.

It’s interesting stuff but doesn’t account for driver optimizations specific to the card. I think it’s good information to use for now but the real data will come in the next week when the laptops go on sale and the NDA is lifted for other reviewers.
I’m hoping mine arrives next week since I plan to order as soon as it’s available.

The CPU fan on my build never stops, but when is running at the minimum speed you can barely hear it only if you have the head near the right side of the PC. Sometimes it speeds up, and obviously it tends to be a bit noisier if you are charging the PC. If you don't use Google Chrome bargage, it's quieter :D

The GPU fan usually sleeps if you are not using Nvidia GPU (Optimus)... When needed, it starts up and you can hear a sort of "click" when it (sorry, "they", because GPU FAN is a couple of fans) spins up.
For sure it's quieter than the XPS 9560 (and I suppose the 9570 has the same fan configuration) because I own a Dell XPS 9560 and I know its annoying cooling policy and its odd Full HD display (call Ghostbusters).

THIS! Google Chrome with 10+ tabs, the fan will Rev up and down all day long. I mostly notice when I'm working on a Uni assignment and have a bunch of tabs open, most are government websites, statistics, Blackboard Learning and Uni Intranet/Library catalogue, etc.

But you can fix this in dragoncenter???? Control and fix the fan curve??

Cause I am in UNI tooo and always have 40-50 tabs open. I can't stand a reving fan

Yes, of course, anything 40% or under in fan curve for me is imperceptible (assuming you don't have your ear next to the fins).

Okay, so just picked up the P65 Creater limited edition from the mail.

I have an hour so far on it installing stuff.

    First 3 sec impression, COOL!

But then I can see it's not entirely white. Not pure white.

It's all plastic with cheap metal panels. One even looked dent LOL but it isn't, just poorly assembled.

It's much worse than the picture can tell.

The wrist rest, all the plastic around the touchpad is making a clicking sound all the time if you have your hand leaning on it, as you do using the touchpad...

Everything is so flexy, whole case is more flexy than a 2012 Lenovo plastic thinkpad :p
Screen is the worst, OMG it is flexy and plastic, scared it will broke by just looking at it to be honest. It will brake sooner or later for sure.

Touchpad is very small, much smaller than Dell XPS15.

I only find negatives truth to be told, but there are few good things.

It looks decent, white is really cool. But it is poorly painted, you can see with the eye it is not quality painted and in case u drop it, it will crack.

The keyboard is just like the XPS, a bit mushy, slightly slightly bigger travel. But with bigger keys and the key are "polished" (no texture) so you can definitely type much faster and better on this one than the XPS. So keyboard is a big plus!!

But the layout is HORRIBLE! No media keys. And the <> button is right next to the spacebar on the right side......so you hit it everytime instead of alt gr when I want to @ or other symbols. Enter key is also half size, in Sweden/Nordic we always have fullsize, a big fast enter key.

Thermals are a bit weird. I set CPU and GPU to 0 all the way in Dragon center. So fans are running sort of quiet for the most. But the thermals, the cpu cores can jump between 70 to 90, a 20 degree difference in seconds, back and forth like a flipper game hahahah very weird. Good thing the fans are not rushing at least.

I am stuck on 91% battery, it won't charge more, says in Windows "plugged, but not charging". This laptop really feels like a power consumer so I will need full battery to get through school.

Talked to my dealer I bought it from and I have 30 days to return it if I want to, if I am careful with it. And thats what I am gonna do..... I will try it more for the next 2 weeks. But not ecstatic/pleased with something that cost me 2100 Euro/USD

Just as a comment regarding the battery: It is normal and windows will not charge the battery again until it drops 90% or below. So get used to the Plugged in, but not charging, it happens to all machines :) hahahaha

Aside from that, I think its unfair to compare it with thinkpads, specially that old. Thinkpads were plastic cases but internal magnesium alloy, making them incredibly sturdy. I would say 2015 thinkpads are the worst product they have ever put out, with flexy chassis, screen, terrible quality and thermals. I use their "workstation" class now, the P series, and it has inherited the good build of older thinkpads even if still bad thermals.

I look forward to your impressions over time. Remember that you don't have to be stuck with a product you don't like, if you definitely find it is not for you, do change it :)

Ehh I find it a bit unfair considering there is dozens of videos on YouTube, even videos comparing the special white additions between manufactures as well as the quality of the finish.

As far as the creaking palm rest, if you decide to keep it it, the fix involves putting tape on the plastic clips that fix the bottom to the chassis. I believe it's 6 plastic clips you cover with tape and it stops the creaking (this should have been addressed in manufacturing, but that's a topic for another day).

The stock fan curves are a bit lax so you may need to set a more aggressive fan curve.

Did some gaming now, a further review comes later.

Just asking, what is "safe" in terms of running the fans?
I put GPU to 130% and CPU to 120% in gaming/performance.
I can also see it running 6000 RPM's. Which seems like insane?

Overall gaming performance very impressed. getting around 80-90 degrees in pubg all medium at Erangel with average 80 fps.

What I am definitely most impressed with, they keyboard! Wow! They really really did an amazing job with it. Layout sucks, but the feeling of the keys are AWESOME!

Also, used "sharpkeys" to add the missing media keys so thats not an issue anymore :) Added prev, pause, next to F7/F8/F9 and it works great.

    Glad to hear it :)

Fans can't run beyond what the machine is designed to do, even if you put "max" fans at all. They probably work between 2000 and 6000rpms which is normal. If you use less aggresive fan curves you still will need around 5000rpms to have good cooling happening haha.

Wow, I get 1145 in Cinebench with TS set to -140mv on core and cache and capped to 3.6GHz. That together with Dragoncenter set to "performance". All that with a 85 degree celcius!

Without undervolt I get 1022 and the temps hit 91C.

Although I saw in your post Dragon center and TS should not be running together.

How do I update bios? I downloaded the file from MSI, but where do I install it? haha

The site should have the instructions, but as far as I remember from my GT73, you copy the files to an USB pendrive and then in BIOS there should be a menu option that says update bios. Choosing it will prompt you to select which drive has the update, and you will navigate your USB to find the BIOS. when selected it will tell you it will upgrade and the warnings of not disconnecting your laptop while it does, fans can be set to max speed while it updates and the laptop may restart once it finishes or something.

It is best to check the instructions on the MSI site to confirm and go step by step :)

Could't find any first, will have to dig deeper. Thanks man, appreciate the kind and fast support!! :)

Thought it was more "plug n play" hahaha the XPS you just press update bios and its done ;)

Thought I should add. Fan curve works great!!! Its dead silent for the most part. Only running for 45 second during startup. Firing up cinebench, it hits 90 degrees but still running full performance, and then the fans kick in slowly, just enough to keep the CPU going without throttling. I could had them run much earlier, but I like it more this way. If I do rendering or Photoshop it means the fans will run less.

Also I should DEFINITELY add that the coil whine is very low. It is there, I believe ALL 8750H laptops has it in some form. This one is very damp (quiet) but it still exists. Barely hearable but enough to notice. My XPS15 which I had 3 different motherboards in all suffered from extreme coil whine, like EXTREME! with the ac connected. Could be idle with browser open and it was unbearable...

So performance-wise this laptop really impress, just the build quality that isn't matching the rest...

It was mentioned in this thread that ThrottleStop changes BIOS settings when you load the software. So does Dragon Center, so while you may not notice incompatibility while running Windows, at a BIOS level they are both changing settings. While you may be making changes in ThrottleStop, you could be inadvertently undoing them in Dragon Center.

the MSI forums have a PDF when you go to the section on support -> Firmware. Not all pen drives are detected so don't be alarmed, just switch to another USB.

I think I have problems with my Samsung 128GB USB 3.1 but have no issues with my SanDisk 16GB 3.0 or SanDisk 32 GB 3.1. Now that I think of it, it may just be incompatible ( BIOS does not detect it ) because of the volume of the disk.

If you are in university and you use the PC in battery mode, its behaviour is more, more peaceful, so no problem about noise. If you put the PC in ECO mode, it's death silent. I use it in university too but I love to use it in death silence even at home, so if I'm not doing heavy tasks periodically I leave it without PSU to let it be mute. Oh, if you hate coil whine and you are experiencing it, try to avoid Turbo Mode and leave it in standard mode (this happened almost only with Chrome, again).

    Edit:

Tried Prime95 and AIDA64, hitting 91 or 92 before PL and then it's obviously a lot cooler. Just way to hot in Brisbane right now without AirCon lol. Sweating just sitting down at the desk.

Well, as some of you know, I got an RMA and sent my unit for repair. I was the one who had 25C differences in core temps and always the same 3 cores running much hotter. I did a repaste and it helped but didn't solve the differential problem. As has been discussed, this was likely due to the heat sink not making good contact with the CPU.
So my unit was received and 2 1/2 hours later shipped. This is concerning. I'm wondering if they did anything at all, that just seems too fast to take apart, change the heatsink & repaste, STRESS TEST & reassemble. I sent them a note with screenshots showing what stress test I ran, the results and even left the software on the desktop (AIDA). I'm wondering if they did anything at all. This is all the info they gave me, nothing on what they did. Ugh, guess I just gotta wait till I get it back and rerun stress tests. Cross your fingers, I love everything about this laptop if I could get my temps under control.

Let us know what they replied with. It seems like they might have just repasted the unit and ship it back.

Done some more PUBG gaming and my impression of the chassis remains.

But I am REALLY impressed by the cooling and gaming performance. Sure it´s not a desktop. But its still enough to have fun gaming. Fun which means no complain about the lag/drops and so on, I also believe it is mainly because the great 144 hz screen.

Temps are low, not extremely loud (although, using Sennheiser Game Zero). The soundcard is also very very good. Enough to power my 150 Ohm headset and that it has a separate MIC in-line, something I miss on a lot of laptops!

So as a gaming machine it is simply great. Not sure how great it is in the long run, imagine gaming 10-20 hours a week for 3 years... If the fans will hold for that long or if the case will melt hahaha

I have not uninstalled Dragon Center, so running both Dragon and throttlestop at the same time, seems to work just fine?

I have also came to the conclusion that the touchpad really sucks... The surface is so weird, like lots of dragresistance (in lack of other words). It really hurt my fingers using it for more than just a few minutes. The Dell have a glass touchpad with smooth and slippery surface, easy on the fingers.

What you think about RTX spec? Jarrod picked up massive clock difference.

Apologies if this is in another forum somewhere but the owners lounge seems a good place to start.

I've started playing Fallout 4 (I know I'm behind by a few years) . The game runs well on the MSI. I had fraps running in the background from a different game and noticed that the fps in fallout is locked at 48fps.

Its not really an issue as I didn't notice any problem with game play. It just annoyed me lol. I've done a bit of digging and seen that it is due to an issue with the 144hz screen and the fps being locked to a multiplier of that..
I also understand the game mechanics are locked to 60 fps.

Has anyone else had this issue and is there anyway to fool the game into using the full potential of screen msi built into the laptop.

    Thanks in advance

    The captain

I unlocked the framerate in the .ini file and the fps went above 48, can use frame limiter after. I think adaptive sync works too but isn't supported by Optimus laptops

    Here’s the Max-Q specs:
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-Max-Q-Graphics-Card.386276.0.html

What he saw on Nvidia’s spec page was Nvidia clumping together the Max-Q and non-Max-Q specs into one.

There will be 2 SKUs for the Max-Q variant:

    80W - 735MHz Base - 1095MHz Boost
    90W - 990MHZ Base - 1230MHz Boost

    Compared to a non-Max Q and desktop:
    Laptop (150W+) - 1380MHz Base - 1590MHz Boost
    Desktop (225W+) - 1515MHz Base - 1710MHz Boost

I’m pretty sure the new GS65 will get the 90W variant because of the included 230W adapter. I’m also hoping that it overclocks well so I can get it closer to non-Max-Q spec.

Just noticed my screen is not aligned either :/ First there is the bezel and then the actual panel. The panel has a black border around it. And the border is 1mm thicker on the down-left than to the down-right side (same goes for the top but diverse). So basically the screen is tilted 1mm :p

    Anyone else experiencing the same?

It's outdated news. Those max-q and laptop RTX specs were released quite a while ago.

Does the GS65 have a key combo to unlock the AMI bios? I tried the usual suspects with no results. Trying to avoid getting all flashy if possible.

Can anyone help me? I just got this laptop in August and I want to use my laptop to play Monster Hunter World but my CPU reaches 90 C. I'm concerned playing this game will damage my laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would undervolting be a solution? I know there are posts on this thread about undervolting but I'm struggling to find it in 325 pages of comments. Any help would be appreciated.

The system temp will be capped at 90C and will not damage your system.
If you feel its performance is sluggish, you can try reducing graphics quality settings to ease the loading on the CPU/GPU.
To do undervolt, XTU is needed to do it.

Even without undervolting one thing I noticed, and I say this because I've played MHW extensively on this laptop, is that you definitely do not need the CPU to be running at 3.9 GHz to be running that game smoothly. As a quick and dirty and without going into undervolting, throttlestop, BIOS settings, etc. try playing the game on balanced settings instead of high performance in your power options. It should allow your CPU to reduce the GHz it's running at which should reduce temps.

Anyone else experiencing a slow laptop on battery with battery power saving (green marker on the battery icon) ?

The laptop gets really really warm in my lap, although HWmonitor says 55C. The orange icon is light up? LOL, only have Chrome open...

The touchpad, when moving around the mouse cursor on the screen freezes and reacts slowly, like lagging in an online game 2008. Same goes for typing, as I started writing this post it took a few seconds before the letters popupd on screen when I had already hit a few words on the keyboard.

Windows battery says 2.27 hours on battery, from fully charged. WTF, I need at least 6-8 hours before I can get it recharged. It's draining way too fast.
And I am already running throttlestop -144mv. What else is there to do.

Is MSI Afterburner installed? Disable hardware acceleration on Chrome.
