I just watched Xotic PC's review on GT60, but I notice one thing he said in the video that I thought other wise.
He mentioned that the back cover of the monitor is a "hard plastic", I always thought they are aluminum. Which brought up an other question, is the palm rest also not aluminum then, IF that guy is correct that it is "hard plastic".
-
Disclaimer: I don't care if its plastic or aluminum since I've already decided this is the laptop for me (I've been shopping for months and IMO this is THE best deal on a gaming laptop)
That being said I would prefer a hard plastic. The plastic pieces of my gateway p6831fx look fine but the aluminum piece where the power and media buttons are is aluminum and looks a lite beat up. It scratches easy and it dents. -
Both LCD back cover and palmrest are brushed aluminum:

That's what I thought, thanks for the confirmation
I don't know about you man... but it's a fact that aluminum is really good at absorbs heat and releases heats, which every 1 degree (Celsius that is) helps for a laptop. -
Lol. Well I want my heat sinks made of aluminum
-
Thanks, I've decided to wait. I'd still prefer a GTX580/GTX675 to a GTX670 and really want a GTX680 so looks like I'll be waiting quite some time.
Have they improved the keyboard on the GT's? I've read they did something about the tactile responce and multi-key presses or was that from the previous models? -
Whether the palm rest is aluminum or plastic, I plan to do a little mod to it by adding carbon fiber skin to it...maybe about a 3" vertical "pad" so as to cover the area(s) where either palm would rest. I think carbon fiber would match the rest of the system real nice. And if not, it can be removed without scratching or gumming up the brushed aluminum.

Just bought my first MSI online (GT70) So I can't answer your question directly, but I can share a peice from THIS GT70 REVIEW on engadget.com.
-
I believe its the same for the 17" models as it is using Steeleseries again. I think its the 1st time they are putting a Steelseries keyboard in the 15" models.
The Engadget review saying the viewing angles are very bad on the GT70 screen, can anyone else confirm this? I plan to buy mine from Gentech or Xotic next month when Im in the USA. Should I upgrade to the gloss screen for $35? Also they come with a Bigfoot Killer E2200 right? Is this a descent wireless card or worth upgrading? Any other mods wroth thinking please let me know, I plan on buying the MSI GT70-0NC-011US model. Thank you. -

I would splash out on the high gamut screen because it's awesome and its the main way you interact with your machine.

Intel NDA finally down.
GT60 and GT70 come with Intel 3610QM this is a 2.3ghz cpu with up to 3.3ghz in turbo boost mode, that has integrated graphics as part of the cpu.
Uses the new 22nm fabrication process and 45w max TDP.
More on it at the Intel Site - Intel® Core? i7-3610QM Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.30 GHz) -
I'm just waiting on Amazon to show it as in stock. It's on their site, and they just added photos to it a few minutes ago. I like their 30 day return policy and $4 next day air shipping for prime members. If it doesn't show up by tomorrow though, I guess I'll pick it up from Newegg (free UPS 3 day).

No it's not. It's nothing more than color saturation that makes things look hideous and unrealistic. If you're really into that, then don't go to the link below. Dr. Raymond Soneira is the master of display technology.

This display has been measured to have awesome colour gamut (colour accuracy) along with the best viewing angles and contrast levels for a notebook TN screen.
If you are happy that the current crop of notebook displays are even covering the colours they should, then go for them. -

To get the most out of a monitor, especially a high end model like the 17.3" AUO 90% NTSC color gamut it should be calibrated and a custom color profile created.
I use an i1 Display Pro with ColorEyes software.
Display Calibration Sensor Capabilities -
I already bought mine from Amazon thru merchant J&R Music and Computers.
Got the GT60 one for portability purposes. I already sold my Asus G73 (which is quite a pain to bring around) and hopefully this beast will arrive soon enough to be fully calibrated, before Diablo 3
-
On my way to pick up the GT70-0NC-012US =D

I'm green with envy.
Best of Luck!
I'm interested to know how that old graphics driver version 295.62 is at playing new games? -
Welp, got my GT60 from Fry's today, they said they had just finished loading them off the truck! So far so good, I'm using it right now. There is a slight difficulty though, the far right side of the space bar doesn't recognize a key pres at times. I've had to press it a second time about 7 times during this little post. Ideas?
-
Did it come with the backlit keyboard?
-
Yup, just finished messing with it. Three section colors, I've got it set to full color right now! It's pretty neat. Full aluminum top and palm rest. The space bar is getting quite annoying, especially since I intend on using this for software development.
-
We are waiting for review!
-
Pics? Unboxing vids? Initial reviews anyone?
-
This space bar issue is pretty bad, and it's not just the edge of the keyboard either, it seems to be happening all over it.
As a demo, I type the following repeatedly without correcting the "missing" space bar presses, which I know I pressed. You can see it's fairly rampant. I do find it odd that it's always in the middle and end of the sentence, but not at the beginning.

Impressions: I didn't do an unboxing because they opened it in the store so I could look at it. There really wasn't much there. The power brick on this thing is huge, its literally the size of a brick, it's 6.5" X 3" X 2". The power cord going to the brick was in a ziplock bag, and the brick itself was in an open ended bag that was not sealed. Honestly, it looked opened. If someone else's is sealed, let me know. Also, there was not a screen protector like I typically see on a screen. There was a thin white linen item over the top of the notebook, but there wasn't the typical clear plastic film over the screen, like there was on the outside edge of the screen and around the keyboard & keys, and the soft touch panel on the top of the keyboard.
The sound is actually pretty good for a laptop, we were impressed. The build quality is overall very good. It feels sturdy. Plastic edges of the screen and surrounding the keyboard, with the exception of the aluminum palm rest and lid top around the glowing MSI logo.
Single large mouse button, status indicators just below the mouse button.
Bloatware seems minimal, with an option to install certain programs on first boot, relating to music and pictures. Antivirus trial from TrendMicro. S-Bar software that manages the FN key functions on startup, and a separate program to manage the keyboard backlight.
Screen viewing angles aren't bad for me but I'm far from an expert. Sitting 3 feet to the left, it can still be viewed and read, with only a slight washing out. I did a dead/stuck pixel check and couldn't find any.
Everything seems to work so far, with the exception of the space bar, which if if continues may result in a return/exchange, it's that bad. There are two backlit lines on the space bar, most taps from the end of the right 'line' results in a miss-press, but it's the main location that I press most frequently. The far left edge of the space bar results in the same miss-press, but I have a tendency to hit the middle more often on that side than the right. -
Has there been any word on whether MSI will make their Super-RAID adapter available as a part, for instance to upgrade one of the hard drive bays in the GT60 (or GT70 that didn't come with that config) to be Super-RAID capable?
-
Now I'm quite worried about that spacebar issue, as I got a GT60 as well. Can't wait to test it out!
-

Me too, can't wait to do it!
Usually there is always a way to get parts, sometimes from a parts warehouse, perhaps resellers will have access to them and be able to offer it as an upgrade. -
Msi would have to step up there quality to ever get another nickle from me. these look exactly the same as the piece of crap I am using now. I wouldn't have got a month out of my machine if I couldn't diy fix it. May as well because I had no warranty from adding a HD. Unless you really baby it your lucky to get a year out of msi. My asus g73 was rock solid I gave to my mother and am sure will outlast this gt780. Too bad the g75 didn't get the 7970m but I still wouldn't even consider a msi if it did. Hoping on the new Samsung.

I don't mind negative feedback at all, in fact I welcome it but can you be constructive and tell us what the problems you had were, and how you fixed them? Right now you have not given us anything useful to go on. -
MSI is learning from their mistakes. Why do you think they made DX and DXR models of the GT780. It's because the GT780R had issues. Samsung is looking pretty good, I say they have a lot of potential.
Lol, giving your mom a gayming laptop. -
I advise you to exchange instantly since your still under the 7-day buyer protection.
-
Hm. I am still debating between buying a 120GB 2.5" SSD or waiting a while and getting the Super-Raid Adapter and doing that. I mean, speed like that would be fantastic, but I can't imagine I would experience much difference in the actual daily use of the computer.
-
Mine will be here tomorrow! Woot! Thank you gentech! I wasn't expecting it until next week!
-
There's only one version of the GT60 (15-inch), and four GT70 versions. That is, unless you buy from something like Gentech.
-
For those of you who have the GT60, how bulky does it look/feel? I was gonna get a Sager, but for some reason I like the gt60 a little better. I go to college so I ask because when I take the laptop to the library I don't want to appear too obvious
-
Which Sager? The NP110? I was tempted by that one, but when I saw a laptop with an 11.6" screen in a store I realized it wasn't for me.
the GT60 is a little big. It's a full size 15.6" laptop, go to any store and I'm sure you can see something similar in size. I don't mind it's weight, but carrying the power cord with it certainly adds to the heft. Hopefully battery life will be decent without using the Nvidia GPU, but I've yet to test it. -
Haha no I was looking at the 9150 one xD and yeah same here I won't mind the weight because I want to invest in a slappa backpack for this and school. It seems like the GT60 isn't too overbearing. Thanks Syrch!
-
I'm okay with it, but a coworker said it was heavy for him. It does weigh in at 7.7 pounds according to the specs (not sure if that includes the power brick or not). It's not a desktop replacement, but it's not a light laptop either. I'm comfortable with it, but I won't be hauling it back and forth very often.
-
Got a GT60 arriving on Thursday from Gentech PC. Just curious how two Momentus 750GB Hybrids will do in RAID 0. Got the Killer Wireless-N 1103 card and 16GB RAM in it too. Just for giggles, I had them do a blue mod on the lid's logo.
I know I'll not get much sleep between now and then.... -
Just got off the phone with MSI tech support regarding the space bar issue. They said to return it to the store for an exchange. Since the store doesn't have any more in stock, I guess it will be for a refund.
Edit:
Also, I thought while using the keyboard that it was skipping other keys, but I figured it was just me. I had a coworker test it without me telling him what the issue was, and he noticed it skipping keys right away, and the space bar not working. -
What I meant was which configuration...or which barebone version...I want the cheapest that I could potentially upgrade to a 7970m, if it turns out the MSI can support that video card. I think the 16F2 version would be best. I've got an M4 and a 500gb drive, so I wouldn't need hdd's.
-
I've been looking into purchasing the GT60, is the keyboard issue uniform for all units? Or is it limited to specific cases? I'm going to hold off on my purchase till more info comes, if it is indeed broken on all units.
-
So far I seem to be the only one here with one in hand, so we'll have to wait until someone else gets one. I can't imagine that it's across all units, seems like a fatal flaw if it is and something Engadget would have mentioned in their review. Being able to type is kind of paramount.
-
Vicious himself seems like he's having keyboard issues
-
Is the GPU soldered or MXM ? How much does the GT60 weight ? (I'm getting a lot of different numbers..)
-
I would check on the GPU, but it would void my warranty. As far as I've read, MSI doesn't often solder the GPU and many resellers are saying it's user upgradable. My understanding is that it weighs in at 7.7 pounds, and that feels about right to me (without the power brick) but I don't have a scale.
-
Mine arrives Thursday. If I have the same issues I'll post it here....right after I go outside and yell and scream and kick some puppies around.
-
I'll be right there with you! It's so nice besides this issue.
