"I don't mind negative feedback at all, in fact I welcome it but can you be constructive and tell us what the problems you had were, and how you fixed them? Right now you have not given us anything useful to go on."

First major problem was about a week after I bought the laptop a cold solder joint developed inside the laptop at the AC plug in and would shut off. Second major problem was above the hinge on the lcd side the plastic cracked in a very bad area from opening and closing the laptop. Very easy laptop to work on with great specs and performance but the worst durability out of any laptop I have ever owned.

I am looking at the MSI GT60 and looking at getting it from either GenTech, XoticPC, or MSI directly. Which has the best deal and the best reputation? Any other suggestions?

Getting mine from GenTech. I had a lot of questions...and they were patient and always prompt to answer my emails. Great service! Prices were competitive with other sites too.

I think they use the exact same mobo this time round as both use the steel series and both have the same LED setup.

    Hey guys,

I just picked up the GT60 from Fry's in California and had a chance to open it up just now. It's way to early to say anything, but no dead pixels, I do not have a spacebar issue after typing several dozen lines (using left edge, right edge or center of spacebar...so far, but no problems). keyboard is not loud and does not make huge clicking sounds, and is rather soft/subtle on typing sounds. Battery life almost made me cry in tears when out of the box stock settings said 2:48 hrs left at 89% battery. I switched it from balanced to power saving mode and it now estimates 5:30 hrs at 86% (keyboard lights off not sure if factored though in estimate). MUCH better (for being out on the road/portable non gaming needs). I am starting to appreciate the non glossy wrist pads so it doesnt show smudges easily (good thing), trackpad is okay in only a few minutes of use, i'll need to increase speed sensitivity to it though (defaults currently).

I will try to post more comments if needed later on. Screen is clean, clear (from consumer point of view), and even in power saver mode is not dim and VERY usable. Granted it is not the raw sugar eye candy of the macbook 17" 1920x1200 brightness to the skull, but GT60 is actually quite nice in matte and text are perfectly readable at 1920x1080 on windows desktop. In fact I think I can drop the brightness down further in power saving mode and probably squeeze more time out of the 5hr+ estimate.

Assuming no glaring issues, I will be really happy to get this at 6 hr+ (i think doable with custom tweaks) battery life for say standard typing/notetaking/conferences/coding. Though I will try to test this with lower brightness (as mentioned brightness is already more than fine in 'power saving mode'), keyboard lighting off, reduced but non comprised screen brightness and no sound (do websurfing/research use) and see how long battery actually lasts, such as in conferences/classrooms.

Correction: I just did a minor windows update (I turned wifi) and restarted now says 2:56 hrs at 77%. hm.

I highly recommend powernotebooks.com while i can't speak for the others I can say from experience that this company will go out of their way to fix anything wrong with your order. They are quick to answer and help you when needed and will go that extra mile to make sure you are happy with your product.

I find it kind of weird....that no one has posted an unboxing video for the GT60 or 70 yet. I would think that even though they only came out on Monday, that SOMEONE would've by now jumped on the "I wanna be first" bandwagon.
I'll be doing a first-impressions vid of it for my subscribers (already unboxed) later next week, but I'm just surprised there hasn't been a whole slew of them as with most new systems.

LOL! Yeah...I saw it. I speak only a bit of German for one thing, though I lived there for 5 years. That was more than likely a sample without the Ivy Bridge chip. I'm talking about a real user (though you knew that I'm sure).
It's still entertaining to hear him speak Genglish.

My GT60 arrives tomorrow...no sleep for me tonight.....

Yeah...I guessed as much. Pretty much the same schtuff as shown in the 3,287 683/783 unboxing vids I've seen: power brick/cords, manuals, driver DVD, battery.

It's just I was kind of hoping they would throw in a voucher for an all-paid week's vacation for two to Hawaii....

Sure...just as soon as it arrives tomorrow. But the official weight is 7.7 lbs.

I purchased a Gt70 at fry's last night and I'm noticing today when playing grand theft auto IV or Skyrim I'm getting alot of fragments around the screen. I've done clean install of the drivers and still the same problem. i'm guessing it might be a bad card.

Does the gt60 have illuminated keyboard as the gt 70? Still waiting for the laptops to show up at local retailers but I'm doing my research.

What are the main differences between the two? I am not interested in the mssd raid setup feature as I already own a ssd that I will install in the second hdd bay.

    Hi all,
For people with GT70 with 1xHDD, what is inside the 2nd HDD bay?
Can you connect/install one 2.5 HDD, 2 mSATA? all connectors are present? none?
How easy is it to upgrade?

    Regards,

Stupid question alert! I've never owned a laptop that had a base video card and a performance video card. How do you know if the application is using the right one. When I ran the windows performance metric it seemed to give me a low score.

As I understand it, the Optimus technology on the graphics card will determine the optimal graphics rendering for the system. Stuff like Office apps, Youtube, etc. will switch to the HD4000 graphics chip on the Ivy Bridge CPU (which will handle them very well), but when high-demand games, movies and such like are initiated, the Optimus will switch it to the graphics card. Not sure if they actually can share the load or if it is strictly one or the other.
In the end, this extends battery life. You can also select options in the Nvidia Control panel as to how graphics are to be handled.

So (I assume) when you run a performance utility, it may be measuring the graphics when they are in the "low mode" rather than measuring graphics card performance.

Screen size, weight, the SSD option, and that's it. Besides the hard drives and the screen, the GT60 is just lighter/smaller/cheaper. It's got the same illuminated keyboard. Oh, and I think 1 less USB 2.0 port? But I'm not positive. Also, the GT60 supposedly doesn't have gold connectors on the audio jacks, but mine did (returned to Fry's for keyboard issue).

I think you're best off asking an MSI upgrade retailer, as us end users aren't likely to void the warranty so soon on the new systems, especially with some of the issues cropping up.

    MXM-A (practically dead) and MXM-B.

If it's standard MXM it's compatible (assuming optimus does not get in the way, but we will find that out shortly).

You can get heatsinks from different places like ebay and rkcomputers, MXM cards from the members market and again ebay.

For more exotic mods you need to modify a similar heatsink to properly match the cards (such as we are doing with the 7970M).

My GT60 has arrived! Keyboard working OK...no issues (checked all keys and space bar). No dead pixels. Freaked a little when YouTube wouldn't play, but that was because Adobe Flash was not installed. For those who are waiting: there are a few programs on the system that you will have to complete install and/or register.
I was pleasantly surprised to find they included YouCam for the webcam. Last I heard there was no program included for the cam.

Someone asked me to comment on the weight. it is definitely a little heavier than a regular laptop as to be expected, but not so much that it would be impractical to haul around a campus to use for class (wouldn't try that with the GT70 though, as great as it is).

I could use some recommendations/advice on the volume controls. I was testing it and have everything (I think) cranked up. I was expecting to get blown out of my chair, but the volume doesn't get all that loud....just at a normal listening level. I suspect there is some little setting I'm missing.

Otherwise....VERY impressed with this system so far. I will be working on a carbon fiber skin mod for the wrist pads tomorrow.

For volume controls, you might want to navigate to the Control Panel > Sound and then double click on Speakers. In there under Enhancements you should find the Loudness Equalization and maybe the Equalizer. Make sure those are checked, it does help the speaker volume.

concerning the keyboard problems that a few seem to have. Are resellers aware of this possible problem? and are they testing to be sure they are not sending any out? I know some of them watch these boards and was just curious.

Thanks for the tip...it made a slight improvement, but still not the sound volume that I expected. I thought it would be quite a bit louder. Still pretty frickin' nice sound though. I'll keep digging into the settings.

I got the carbon fiber skin from Automega...it's the "dry" black skin, not the glossy (I had a glossy sample and didn't like the way it looked on the panel).

I peeled off the big sticker (the one with all the specs on it) and put it on the cardboard envelope the skin came in, then cut it out very carefully to make a template for the corners of the panel skins. Right side is about 6.5 W and
3" deep. Left side is 3x3. Then I just drew those as a square and a rectangle on the back of the skin, then applied the template to draw in the corners so that the wide curved corners would match at the top left and right of the touch pad. Cleaned the panel with alcohol and then applied the skins.

Oh...I removed all the other stickers too, but they left a lot of glue residue. I VERY carefully put some super-glue remover on those areas and cleaned them off. I had to be careful...not sure how that remover would react with the plastic nearby. Then I cleaned the area thoroughly with alcohol.

Well i found out the problem. The fragments seem to appear when i hit the turbo button on the laptop. The overclock seems to have a negative effect. When the turbo is off, everything run smooth as silk.

Anyone else with the GT60 find the sound from the speakers REALLY disappointing? I mean its not bad but for being these hyped up 'premium best' speakers, I really find them underwhelming.

I tried the Spectre 14 with the beats audio on it, and I kinda hate the beats fad thing going on, but I have to admit the speakers did sound fairly good for that laptop and certainly have a better depth (mid range?) than what I am hearing on the GT60 so far.
