Why has msi started coming out with new sku's and the 980m with only 4 gigs was there issues with 8 gigs?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Probably for cost reasons since 8GB is not much of use on 1080P resolution, perhaps later. -
Can someone tell me if worth the money pay more forma the gt72 dragón against the 211 model? Thanks
-
@ riegz0rWould be much easier to follow up if there links provided to the tech tables itself or any offers for those versions
I´ll go with the GT72 non-dragon cause i´m really happy about the GT72 does not look like a toy
so much more "professional" and adult than earlier gaming devices from MSI, but if you prefer the dragon decals (which also look nice but ... up on everyone itself) they also look nice but the price ...
@ 980M 4Gig vs 8Gig i think thats not such a big deal breaker in cause of the Desktop 980 is still on 4Gig which is enough for all (excluding you use heavily downsampling). I think that´s enough for 1080p and a Notebook atm cause the GPU itself performs really good. So i´ll prefer a better screen over 4Gig Memory.

hi everyone
would someone be able to advise me on the process of getting a clean Windows 8.1 installation completed? The amount of malware and ad-support software installed on my new machine is crazy.
I would like to do a fresh install. I have downloaded all the drivers from the MSI website. I have a few questions though
1. I should be able to use any Windows 8.1 64-bit dvd for installation?
2. Where do I get the cd-key from? Is it a sticker somewhere that I have missed or is it built into the laptop?
3. If built in, how do I go about extracting said cdkey to use in the new fresh installation process?
Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.
Greetings from South Africa -
Actually, I went on and bought the laptop yesterday.
The model is 2QE-244RU. I've had very short timeframe to do this as it was last one in stock and today its price increased by 20%.
285M you mentioned were used by me previously, P170EM has Radeon 7970M
-
I would go 8GB over 4GB just to be future proof for few years. Shadow of mordor uses more then 4GB on ultra hd texture on 1080p. I would say its required in the future due to trend of upcoming console ports if you want to keep your texture on ultra.
My GT72 fans has a little bit of metalic screeching sound. I'm not sure if this is normal as its abit annoying. -
Wait. WHAT!
I've been busy lately and haven't been around much but when did this happen?
Are the cheaper ?
Does anyone know if or when the base model gets a IPS screen, that's the only thing I'm holding out for. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well the 980M is more powerful the 7970M in xfire so it's still a bit jump

Its almost same, just have dragons 2x 128gb m2, 24 gigs of RAM and 2.5ghz 3.7ghz boost procesoor 0.2 GHz more than 211 model worth the money?

I just ordered a GT72 2QE-415US and am wondering if I should go with one of these and just buy a crucial 512 gig m2 for 300$ but kinda stuck on the vram on gpuLast edited: Dec 18, 2014 -
I was looking for a neoprene sleeve. Careful reading of reviews showed that most 17" sleeves wouldn't fit. I found that the Samsonite Aramon NXT 17" does fit. It requires a very slight bit of stretching but there's also an internal seam or lip that covers over the edge and protects the laptop from any contact with the sleeve's zipper. With the sleeve on, it feels like a perfect fit in my Everki Lunar bag -- no slipping around. I got it for about $15 directly from Samsonite after the discount for signing up for their promotional emails. Currently $20 on Amazon. Here's a link to the product on Samsonite's site (currently out of stock):

My bad, not fluent in sager chassis numbers, just went by your signature and saw the dual 285.
-
I was looking for one too. Are you sure it fits? It has only 1" thick.
-
The laptop is slightly bigger than P170EM, but I've got no issue with the size, since my backpack ( TARGUS XL Backpack) was originally purchased for 18.4'' laptop (Sager NP8120 with previously mentioned 285Ms in SLI).

What on earth do you need 8GB of VRAM for? lol. 4GB is already overkill. 2GB is enough for pretty much anything.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this.
-
4GB is not overkill. BF4 needs 3GB Vram for ultra, and shadow of mordor needs 6GB vram on1080p. Better to take 8GB vram because of xbone and ps4 upcoming console ports. if you want to be safe for 1-2 years i'd say 8gb vram is a must unless you can settle with lower graphic settings.
I decided to return my GT72 laptop and buy it elswhere because i have one dead pixel and the fan makes a buzzing noise

BF4 Ultra @ 1080P needs no more than 2GB, see below youtube video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6swUZt1yn1k
Here's another discussion about VRAM requirement for BF4.
3gb of VRAM is enoug - Forums - Battlelog / Battlefield 4
You will need more than 3GB of VRAM if only if you do 4K gaming.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYQHPKfUnLU -
You are so wrong... Bf4 does need more then 2GB vram. The video you showed was taken on a med/small map. On large conquest map for example Zavod, vram usage goes around 2500.
Heres a screenshot i took to backup my claim.
http://i.imgur.com/gcvF2aq.jpg
Here titanfall linked to thread, 3gb vram will not be enough.
VRAM Usage in Titanfall - Overclockers UK Forums
And shadow of mordor vram memory test on 1080p...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOJwy2bjzHg
As i said newer titles will most likely require more then 4gb vram due to xbone and ps4 ports in the future. And yes on 1080p. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
3GB is definitely enough for all of the titles out there, and extra VRAM is only good for caching purposes.
Some people mentioned about caching in the posts because games can run smooth with 3GB nevertheless.
GPU can possibly hit bottleneck first before needing so much VRAM.
GPU & VRAM bandwidth are more important than VRAM amount.
This topic is frequently discussed by everyone, 980M with 8GB is still good because you can still benefit from it.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
With the MXM slot and upgradability of the machine guaranteed by MSI it should be less of an issue anyway compared to the machines with soldered GPUs.
I do agree that 4GB will be plenty for 1080p for some time though. -
By the way, the other night I also noticed 'fan boost' which startled me as I was about to drift off to sleep.
The display was turned off after 5 minute idle at that point. The fans kicked in at max for a couple of seconds first, then after some interval, revved again until I got up and closed the lid sending the laptop to sleep. -
I think most of what you say is accurate when considering games that you have experience with, but any game could have the possibility for exceeding the 4GB card. All they have to do is publish game content with more details and it will exceed it. It will come. It is already here with the applications that I am using. For example, if you are a game developer, much of the content produced ALREADY would exceed 4GB in its original source format (not published for a specific game).
In game sustained performance will depend on each game and how it utilizes system memory and gpu memory. If there are a lot of memory transfers each frame, then memory clocks and band width will improve performance only if you know this is a bottleneck. So I would emphasize your use of the word "possibly".
GPU and VRAM bandwidth being more important than GB vram. This is definitely NOT the case if you know that your application exceeds the amount of VRAM. For example if your game takes 5GB if GPU memory AND the game does nothing to deal with this, then the driver will take control over how GPU memory is swapped/paged. Many times in a high performance system, if this is a small amount, then frame rates may not be affected or not affected that much.
But if your game does nothing amount GPU memory management AND your game requires 7GB GPU memory and you run on a 4GB system, it is very possible that you get sustained hits to frame rate that would be solved with an 8GB card.
So, I don't believe that any of the statements that you make are incorrect. They just depend highly on your gam or application.
You always need more GPU memory than what you think you require. I'd leave about 20% extra minimum.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
RE: Black Screen on Boot/Restart/Hibernate -- WIndows 7.
I have done quite a few tests since installing SCM, Latest MSI software and Latest NVidia Driver.
So far power off and restart seem much more stable, but I get black screen when coming out of hibernation. -
RE: Nvidia Driver
Dear all. I recently purchased a MSI GT72 Dominator Pro - 494AU and I have a question regarding Nvidia Driver update. This is the first notebook I bought so I am a bit lost lol.
Currently, the latest WHQL nvidia driver available on the MSI website is 344.24. However, the latest notebook driver available on the nvidia website is 344.75 WHQL.
Is it safe for me to download the driver from Nvidia or should I wait for MSI to release the 344.75 before updating?
Thanks and Best Regards. -
The latest is 347.09 beta... I haven't found any problems to use always the latest fom Nvidia. Last 1.5 years I've tried 36 different ones
-
I suppose there are no such monsters - just convertibles and AIOs.
-
I dunno if there was any calibration profile for GT72 with stock Chimei N173HGE display, but here's one for you by Spyder4Pro! It'll make a HUUUGE difference in color accuracy)
Just add it to your color management GPU profile and compare it to the stock sRGB profile. ENGOY!

Indeed, had the same issue, my friend updated BIOS (if new can destroy some hardware) and it worked for him. Since this laptop cost me 3900$ i am not having problem with it ^^ until its not exceeding 40% degree of GPU and CPU
Mine, is working smooth and quite for a long long day (cache in task manager exceeding 25+ gb) but after i leave it for idle, after some times, like for 20-30 sec. the fans boost the air from the laptop like cooling itself... idk why since its already cool, but lol who knows (have good cooler)
hope it help -
I suspect it is doing something CPU-heavy when idle, some kind of optimization... Maybe Windows 8.1 has to do something with it.
-
Hey Thanks for this!
I loaded it up and set it as default profile in color management settings but I couldn't see any perceptible difference. Is there any way or test method to actually see the difference between color profiles? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's possible that when idle long enough at lower fan speeds that accumulates enough heat to trigger high speeds temporarily. -

New driver 347.09 breaks/disables overclocking for me?
Anyone with the same issue? Neither Afterburner nor Inspector lets me apply more than standerd clocks. Until 344.80 everything went well.
Best regards
phila -
On beta release? Or WHQL which is out now.
-
The difference is substantial. If you see no changes then it didn't apply. Try to manually add it in the color management settings and make it a default color profile for 980M.
It happened for me almost every time when i use custom profiles, it just won't load it up the first time. Then after reboot and changing a few settings here and there it works) -

What SKU´s are coming with the IPS display? Only the ones with the 4980?
Im between this and the G751JY, but it seems like the GT72 has less problems -
Is this normal? Also, I've noticed that it keeps switching power plans on its own, why does that happen?
-
It's normal and starts charging soon. No idea about that switching.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Sounds like you have a different plan option depending on if you are plugged in or not.un5killed likes this. -
Did you ever figure this out?
I am starting to think about this laptop.
I would only get it however with the IPS display. No way am I paying 2k for a TN. I'll spend more and get a better screen.
I am looking at the dragon edition but I do not think it has the IPS. Any links on this?
Also I really love a 9 cell battery with manual switch. I mean if you need this for school for a few hours my goodness it would be no problem to reboot in Intel graphics mode and do homework for a while and then reboot to take a gaming break. No problems there. -
Marcelosiciliano Notebook Consultant
I think im going with the gt72. The G751 has some quality problems like the poor applying of thermal paste and screen problems.
With the gt72 I will be able to easily repaste and clean the fans in case I have a problem! -
But what about TN vs IPS display???
Which one are you leaning towards and why?
...
Also to other users who paid a lot. Why did you spend so much on this instead of getting dual sli Sager or wait for dual sli alienware?
Just curious because I am looking at this laptop now as well. -
Marcelosiciliano Notebook Consultant
I would get a clevo p650sg, but I live in brazil. I'm traveling to Miami and none of these resselers accept an international credit card. So I will buy a notebook from amazon or bestbuy.
Yeah the g751 have an IPS screen and that is awesome, but some say that the TN panel on the gt72 is not that bad.
I'm leaning to the gt72 because of the easy fan cleaning, it uses a killer wireless card and not an Intel one (it has a lot of problems), its a bit thinner, switch able graphics, better speakers, better trackpad, better cooling (the g751 has quality problems with that) and more storage options.
Yeah with the gt72 you pay more for less , but it is better overall
-
Why would you go clevo over dominator? Explain...
Why would you buy Dominator TN over Dominator IPS? Expalin...
I understand the asus. That thing is ridiculously heavy. I picked one up in the store and OH MY. -
Marcelosiciliano Notebook Consultant
Well...the clevo was cheaper...and smaller...lighter.
And I'm going TN because its damn cheaper. An IPS dominator starts at 3300 -
wow so you would really get the clevo over the dominator?
I will definitely take a real good look at the clevo. I'm in the us and can order one. If i build it like I like it's about 2200.00.
I am just not sure that it has as good as cooling or enough battery power for me. -
Marcelosiciliano Notebook Consultant
The cooling is good, but the battery is quite bad -
The battery is horrible in normal mode but in Intel mode it's amazing. 2.5 hours via nvvidia, 5 hours watching movies over and over in Intel mode, and just typing in school probably 8 hours with zero brightness!

Keeping the gpu active consumes quite a bit of power, a lot of that is due to the hungry 256bit gddr5 bus.
