Well yes all sli machines are heavier and the battery life much worse. That's why many people avoid them.

    Ya that battery is horrible.

This Dominator is looking awesome though. I bet I can get tons of battery life with awesome performace.

The only problem is that if I am willing to spend 3800.00 what about SLI 980Ms?

If you will spend 3800 why not get dual sli?

Oh didn't see that before I posted.

I mean this laptop is 8.4 lbs? How much heavier is an SLI machine?

Yes I bet the battery life is horrible and what about temps?

Yes the Sager has SLI 980M for the same 3800 price.

Can anyone tell me why you choose the dominator over this?

Try to edit your posts rather than creating a new one to avoid the wrath of the mods.

Better cpu cooling, quieter idle, longer battery life, better keyboard and speakers, better display, more ssd slots, better display outputs and guaranteed upgradability are some fairly good reasons.

Nice! The only problem though is the CPU right? The Sager one you can upgrade but the Dominator you can't right?

Yeah the dominator comes with a soldered CPU. But if you buy the one with the i7 4980 i dont see why would you want to upgrade.

Is there anyway you could justify the 3300.00 or 3800.00 ones or would you get something else at that price?

Or would you get a GS60 and build an incredible dwsktop?

I just picked up a GT72 Dominator Pro 211 from Microcenter yesterday. I was leaning towards ordering the NP8652, but the need for a more instant form of instant gratification overwhelmed me.

I feel like a complete newb again since I had W7 and ATI. [..."ATI", that should sum how out of touch I am right there. ] for the last 5 years. I can't find anything. I don't know what preinstalled software I should keep. I haven't seen a Nvidia driver in so long, they changed a lot. Even with the G73 I updated the graphics driver the old fashion way. Should I uninstall->install or install over the old driver with nivida. It was asking me to upgrade, but I left it alone for now like most everything else.

I decided to install DA: I for now while I search for knowledge.

...ugh, noobishness ...please, ...somebody, give me some links so I can get it off me!

I am in the same boat as you ...

That is the same price of the NP8652 but you get 8GB of Video Card ram and much longer battery life in Intel mode. The only problem is that the GT72 is much much bigger.

Do you think you could comfortably carry that laptop around college campus or is it just to darn big?

I lugged a G73 to and from work. Will do this with the GT72 replacing it. When I was getting the NP8652, it was going to be the "base model" + 3yr part warranty, so it would have only been $1800 for me with tax later on.

    I don't know if I'd want to lug either a G73 or GT72 around a campus. The Sager is small/light enough that I don't think I'd care.

Yeah, I was OK with that. Way too many high end desktop cards with 3-4GB that are equal or above the 980m's performance [GTX 780/780Ti/970/980, R9 290/290x ..not to mention a lot of SLI/CF on single card solutions ] for 4GB to become irrelevant for just 1080p any time soon. I doubt the GTX 960 will come with more than 4GB either. The PC gaming community is usually good at workarounds when an issue arises too.

Ok, I have been loving my laptop so far, but there is one major annoyance I am having: the screen many times will auto-dim during dark scenes or when on dark webpages/Steam. I have tried to find the fix for this, but adjusting the Windows Power options seems to have failed to correct the issue. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how was it resolved? It makes games almost unplayable.

Depends on your build but it's about as big as you can get away with. If you cycle in say it's a bit big for that most likely.

Let's say I got the 3300.00 or 3800.00 dollar one. I think those are 8.46 pounds.

That might be a lot to carry around campus.

Hello, I am thinking about buying the MSI gt72QE dominator pro.

However, the model with the IPS display is not currently available in my country, and when it is, it will come with 4 x ssd disks, 32gb of ram etc, and I want the model with 2 ssd disks and 16gb of ram, which will not come with an IPS display.

I am afraid I will not be satisfied with the TN-panel of this laptop. From what I've read, there are some problems with the colours and that IPS screens are more sharp. Is this correct?

If so, would I be able to replace the TN-panel of the gt72 dominator pro with a IPS screen in the future? I know I will be voiding the warranty of the screen, but is this possible? And to people who have bought the gt72 dominator pro, how satisfied are you with the screen? And also, is there any color-correction softwares that can fix the supposed problems people are having? Will a game like Far Cry 4 look much better on an IPS screen, and is it worth the money?

does anyone know why i cant get the raid to go above 447GB ? I have a 1TB SSD & 3x 128GB drives im trying to throw in a RAID 0 (stripe) array but it wont let the raid volume go the full 1TB on the SSD (only 128GB)... ?? I don't want to put it on the SATA 2...

seems it will only use teh 128 on the SSD as its limited by drives! might have to add another 1 tb SSD lol and sell the m.2 ssd's.... overkill much

Could you point out where I can turn that off? I'm never using it on battery, save for ocassional seconds where I unplug it faster than it goes to sleep after lid was closed.
And that adaptive brightness is somewhat broken. I am currently sitting in a well-lit room, yet it keeps lowering the brightness once dark colors dominate the display (like switching to a site with dark background).
I've went and turned off the feature in all the power plans, but it persists :/

It depends on how much walking around your actually doing. [big campus or small?]

Also, how much are you going to get to game on the average day while you have it on you?

...and then there is the issue of if you'll have enough battery life for the day. [that would be an issue with the NP8652 as well]

Maybe you should consider getting a real cheapie just for note taking and GT72, NP8652 or desktop as you see fit.

I would say medium and only a couple days a week.

Sometimes I will have a long class and sometimes a short class.

Sometimes I'll have a long break Lin between.

    ...

Can anyone test out that "switch" button.

I bet with a 9 cell battery and that switch feature the battery will last like 7 hours in minimum brightness just note taking and no wifi.

I will carry the ac adapter as well. I just want or have enough battery power for taking notes and then plug in and game for breaks between studying.

    98 of 98. Bravo.
Btw, hi all. I've read this thread from front to back and I'm very excited to be joining the gt72 family. Got the 415US model coming to me from ncix. Ordered on the 27th, this thing cannot get here soon enough.
This is my desktop replacement coming from an 8800gts. I'm hoping it'll at least be a little bit faster. ;-)

A big thank you to the contributors of this thread, to the guinea pigs who are trying things out first and to the reps taking time to answer questions.

Here's a simple one for you all. For a cooling pad, should I get one with the movable fans to maximize cooling or should I just get a decent fixed fan one as the cooling is plenty sufficient in the laptop?

    Cheers!

    Hi,
I also want to say hi to everyone here, im excited as well to be part of the community ... I got the GT72 Dominator Pro - 445, I get this baby tomorrow and I cant wait. I was debating for a while what to get and what not, I almost went for a Macbook pro but at end I pulled the trigger for this beast, after reading a lot of different threads and reviews from this site most of them and others.

I never do this or recommend it. For graphics drivers, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
