    Hi there,

is there any possibility to overclock the 970M on actual nVidia drivers? So yesterday a new driver released which also did not allow to overclock anyhow (why nVidia, why ...). Maybe there´s any special tool i´m not aware of? Or an registry hack? Did 980M users got same issue?

Why: just wanna find out the max "safe" stable clocking & performance of this card (without VBIOS mod which is not yet available(??))

@ dragonwolf you can try to (backup befor everything) install new win8.1 in full offline mode without register @ microsoft during the setup, when it is finished, you will have local profile (admin) for 99% and have less stress in many situations.

    Thanks and regards

All 347.xx drivers prevent software overclock, so stick to the 344.xx !

Windows 7 has that habit (making files read-only) as well. Experienced this twice.

Yes it can be added without removing anything else for it. For best thermal performance don't put it on the reverse of the current drive, either put it to the side (or reverse and oposite side).

Unfortunately, as soon as I sign into the store for updating my apps and installing the few I bought it reverts. As I did that last restore. (When I got my MSI back from RMA for the keyboard). So I don't know what happened there.

Huh, out of the probably hundreds of times I've installed Windows 7 by now that hasn't happened to me. No, the issue I get is needing to go into 'Software Distribution' and deleting everything out of there so Windows Update will work. The services, and all that are working already. That's not every time, but only about meh... 80% of the time.

Never seen this before, could it be a file permission issue from upgrade installation?

Congrats on the order! The 211 version is the most popular of them. It does have 8GB vRAM. For the people who are reporting 4GB its most likely the software they are using hasn't been updated to recognize more then 4GB.

No, I suspect it arose when I restored a folder to previous state. Two times restored, both times noticed 'read-only' tickbox for every file/folder I came across. I could tick it off and apply, but it came back once I reopened properties.
Didn't affect my everyday work/leisure though.

    P.S.: This happened on P170EM, so it's a bit off-topic

Can you check if it does have a IPS screen with hwinfo? My friend is looking for one.

I had the same problem with some programs reporting 4GB vram instead of 8GB vram. Theres new sku's coming out in the netherlands soon with 4GB vram. Maybe some one can confirm with 4GB vram version if its really true as I heard its out in UK/Canada?

    Hello all,

I'm looking into the MSI GT72 (alongside the ASUS G751 and Dell Precision m6800).

    Concerns:

    1. Does anyone know what MSI charges for a one-year warranty extension? (For that matter: can buyers extend accidental damage coverage too?) I looked but did not find a price.
    2. Which screen (or screens) does the GT72 ship with nowadays? Do any of the re-sellers (in your experience) offer the IPS screen with 970m models?
    3. Do the GT72's hinges seem sturdier than those of previous models?

    Thank you.

I bought it on amazon with the excaliberpc reseller. I thought that it would come with the 4710hq and a TN screen, but it came with a 4720hq and an ips screen instead. Mine is the 211US SKU

Someone please tell me how to Disable the Charms menu that that pops up with a swipe right -> left on the track pad? I cant stand it and there seems to be no way to turn it off.

    Edit -

I have spent all my time trying to modify registry files, but uninstalling Synaptics from MSI and installing the generic Synaptics fixed it... go here and post #44 has the instructions.

This has been the single biggest pain with this laptop, finally fixed.

Part number for that screen is LG LP173WF4-SPF1. That's updated version of IPS that Asus put into their G751.

Makes me glad I sprung for the 980M, I figured for my gaming usage a 970M would have been good enough, more than good enough. But I decided to treat myself to the most powerful single gpu that was just coming out instead of waiting until the gpu was like 6 month or older. The 970M was an upgrade over my older AMD 8970M, and that was doing good for my gaming, other than I HATED Enduro. SLI would have been a waste for me personally. But the 980M should last me a good while on my gaming usage. Turns out more than one reason for me. Though I would still suggest the 970M to anyone on more of a budget as it is a good gpu as well. The issues they mention doesn't really affect games it seems just that one benchmark. Heck look up gaming reviews for all of the gpus before this benchmark became more popular.

    Hi Guys,

Can anyone confirm, that this GT72 Dominator pro (GTX980M) supports HDMI 2.0 or not, that means I can connect to a UHD TV wih HDMI 2.0 supportable and get 60hz refresh rate without using the display port.

I also guess the answer is "no", atm in DE forums I did not receive any replies with 970M 3GB or 980M 4GB/8GB to compare so i have no data. Also I am not wanted to hijack this thread so the following ist just for your information.

Please note, down below the bold formatted I cannot interpret, maybe this is up on DWM (stock setting is active) also there is not anything proved which claims there´s an VRAM Bug (which does not matter for 6GB version as 5.5GB full you never will have in front of "end of life" of an 970M).

This is an issue with the desktop 970, the 970M is also unaffected as the disabled rops are in a full lot, all of the memory it has access to is at its full performance.

Dedicated cards (like in the GT72) will have some vram partitioned off by the OS meaning you run out faster with benchmarks that are not working with the OS like a game etc.

This is partly why disabling aero can improve performance some times.

Feel free to try; just leave it on stock voltage and increase the multipliers. But it won't hold your OC under load because the chip is TDP/Current limited and you can't remove the limitation via XTU.

First I would like to thank everyone in this thread for great advice and constructive conversations. However there's an issue with my GT72 2QE which I haven't read elsewhere, and I was hoping that there's help out there. Whenever I'm not running programs on my computer (besides monitoring tools) and the screen goes into hibernation (set at 5 min) the fans rises to maximum level. This goes on for about 30 sec and then the fans goes silent. The procedure repeats itself untill I do any gestures on the computer. It also happens when i close the lid on the laptop and it's very frustrating. The temperatures stay below 45 celcius throughout the intrusion and the cpu load never rises above 5%. I've had this issue since day one and the strangest part of it is that it doesnt happen when I'm using the laptop or streaming radio/tv and goes into hibernation. What could be causing this?

Hey people. Just found an interesting information about GSYNC techology on Laptops with eDP monitors here.
I went ahead to the original source ( 0, 1, 2, 3) and after reading found that 1 guy claims it has worked on a MSI GT72 IPS panel
To sumz up, anyone who has MSI GT72 with IPS (is that 4K?) LG panel, could you try and see if GSYNC works on your laptop? Because if it does: a) you will get a nice feature for free; and b) this will be a proof that all these is not a BS!
    Link for modded drivers
In the video he shew that he doen't need to delete older driver and restart after installing modded one but in text instruction he recommends to
Also I don't get how he installed Desktop driver (launched the exe) and it installed on a laptop. Perhaps it's possible to mod driver and put it back in executable pack but why?..

Worth noting that anything you do here is on your risk, I don't take any responsibility and so on, I just found this information, analyzed and gave.

I use desktop drivers. I can turn on and off SLI without requiring a restart of my PC. There's lots of reasons why you'd use modded drivers. nVidia gimps mobile GPUs with drivers by default. No idea why, but it's annoying.

Also, gsync requires the Gsync module on a screen... if that user got it working, then that panel has gsync built in. There's no other way to use gsync. If most people can't use it but one guy got it working, then something's fishy. If most people can't get it working, then blah. As far as I know, 900M can use Gsync on external panels anyway. Meaker has used them, so you can ask him if he needs modded desktop drivers for it.

    Is this really the case?
I got the stock GT72 version with one 8 GB module in bank/slot 0.
Now if i add another 8 GB module in bank/slot 3 or 4 (those who are accesible under main cover) they will not work in dual channel mode?

    Hello to everyone around !
After almost 5 years I put my ALIENWARE M 17 R2 ( ATI 5870x2) to a well deserved rest ( not totally ofc ) and replaced it with a brand new GT72 2QE . All I have to say I'm amazed with the raw power of the laptop specially the GTX980 which really is a great peace of hardware engineering , well done nvidia.
Im not ATI nor Nvidia hardcore follower I rather follow the technology and what it brings to me as end user and although I have a great respect for ATI I have the same for nvida . I was considering to go with another ALIENWARE 17 however this beautiful machine caught my attention on display of a Virgin store since then I started to dig in more about my new potential laptop . truth is on display was a Dominator with 970 and I dint quite liked the 3 GB on board then a week or so later this appeared on the shelf GT72 2QE and when I saw the specification it was an instead buy right a way , at that point I didn't go specifically to by a Laptop , but when I saw this baby ..it was all don in matter of minutes , next thing I'm walking out with the huge msi TRANSPORT box ( not that fancy colored which was inside ) and of course everything that followed was all ..uooooh ..WOOOW ..AWSOME ..AMZING , packing , extra mouse and msi backpack , keyboard and laptop covers all in all I felt and still feeling like king :) Thanks MSI!

So far everything is top -notch , no problems however there are two things that I cant figure out and need some advice from you guys here .

    1. I belive thet inside of the laptop (backside) Is an empty slot for additional HDD but Im not sure I came a cross some videos where this lap was open and it shows replacing of video-card ...so I consider to put another HDD inside 1TB and make a RAID array out of them ..is this possible ? connection wise ? is everything there ? as for now I have 256 SSD RAID and one 1TB HDD (no raid of course ) if so what HDD is recommendable ?
2 . AUDIO part ...DIGITAL OUTPUT ??? now here I'm confused because in the manual it says :
Headphone out/ SPDIF-out  Used for speakers or headphones. The S/PDIF connector is also provided for digital audio transmission to external speakers through an optical fiber cable.  Connect the Front speakers here.

"The S/PDIF connector is also provided for digital audio transmission to external speakers through an optical fiber cable." how ??? I cant see an optical output ...and I don't know if this port is combined analog (headphone) and DIGITAL SPDIF but there is no way I can plug in a fiber optic cable like the one I use for my SB OMNI .
However even if it is combined ANALOG/DIGITAL output there was no cable provided which converts 3.5 jack to (digital) RCA if this is the case ..any thoughts or advises are welcome .

    Thanks !

Could someone please explain to me how the MSI Supercharger works?

From what I understand when that thing is running and you plugin a usb device, it's supposed to charge faster. Is that right or is there more to it?

On top of all that, does it work on all ports of the GT72? I have noticed a plug-like symbol on one of the ports on the left hand side of the laptop. Is that the only port that supports the Supercharger?

    Hey people.
There is one controversial information about GSYNC techology on Laptops with eDP monitors here.
I went ahead to the original source and after reading found that 1 guy claims it has worked on a MSI GT72 IPS panel
To sumz up, anyone who has MSI GT72 with IPS LG panel, could you try and see if GSYNC works on your laptop? Because if it does: a) you will get a nice feature for free; and b) this will be a proof that all these is not a BS!
Link for modded drivers OR just download this file and put it in extracted folder of nvidia driver.
In the video he shew that he doen't need to delete older driver and restart after installing modded one but in text instruction he recommends to
Worth noting that anything you do here is on your risk, I don't take any responsibility and so on, I just found this information, analyzed and gave.

You could have installed Start8 or StartIsBack or even I believe ClassicShell and gotten charms themselves disabled entirely.

Just got my 211 from Xotic with 2 additional intel SSDs and there's only one thing that bothers me: initially I had no mic response, I enabled stereo mix in the audio panel and now the onboard mic works, but whenever I plug in an exterior mic it just doesn't work?
Also, could someone which carries this beast around tell which bag they're using(the Beacon seems a little overpriced) - I like the Swissgear Ibex 17 that is recommended on the first page, but i would like a confirmation from someone that it fits and is protected.

How are you plugging in that external mic? MSI has a pretty advanced utility to handle all their audio ports, it might just be that you don't have the port mapped as mic in.

Headphones - first input towards the user, headphone mic - second input. The Realtek manager pops up to say that a microphone has been plugged in but in audio manager from windows my bars don't go up next to the device when I speak(which is also the case when i'm using the external mic, but at least that works)

edit:well it seems both mics are working fine, the issue resolved itself with a restart - although this is not the first restart - so I don't get it(but thanks anyway, Derek - as always, the guys at Xotic are quick to help)...
Now about that backpack... anybody used the Swissgear Ibex XL?
