You can also try to update the Realtek HD audio driver because sometimes a newer version creates better experience.

that link provides no good explanation. also please dont confuse people- this is similar functionality but its not exactly the same as g-sync.

    try this:

    http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/Mobile-G-Sync-Confirmed-and-Tested-Leaked-Alpha-Driver

today you can fix half the problem already, without any hacks, if you really want- just change the nvidia driver to "adaptive" refresh and that will fix any tearing when fps is way above refresh. that only leaves the "other" problem scenario of fps being way below refresh.
    vsync-nvidia.png

i personally think they will rebrand "adaptive refresh" driver setting to "gsync without the module" and then proceed to charge money to add a "real" g-sync module to a laptop display.

hopefully freesync takes off to avoid all this silliness and frivolous marketing/hardware.

Your knowledge about this tech (or more like lack of it) doesn't let you to understand what you are talking about but you are not even trying to. "Adaptive" in CP is Adaptive V-Sync while we are talking about GSYNC. That guy above already got it working BTW.
    So keep it.

Can't do better, it has been written by the guy who modded the driver to enable G-Sync.

I'm not trying to confuse anyone ! By this guy's own words, it's G-Sync, not a "similar functionality".

Here is another link showing it working : http://gamenab.net/2015/01/26/truth...using-vesa-adaptive-sync-technology-freesync/.

    Is this screen IPS?
Monitor Name: LG Philips [Unknown Model: LGD0469]

edit: it seems it is. So I paid for 4710HQ and the TN panel and I got the 4720HQ with the IPS panel .YAY! Thank you MSI and Xotic! BTW, you guys should update your config page for the 211 (that is, if you can get a confirmation from MSI that all these models will have this)

I really regret not just paying for loaded RAM now :-(

I don't understand why, when assembling the computer, the manufacturer didn't fill the inaccessible RAM slots first and leave the ones on the top of the motherboard open :-( The idea of completely disassembling the motherboard to add the last two RAM sticks seems so daunting to me. I am scared to death that, even with a video to guide me, I will end up messing something up. Siggghhhhh.

So far that is my only complaint regarding this otherwise amazing machine.

Typically MSI does install the RAM in the hard to reach slots leaving the two that are easily accessible from the main bottom panel open. Have you opened up the bottom panel to verify this?

Yes. Almost the first thing I see when I open the case is two bright G SKILL stickers staring me in the face. I bought the machine from ibuypower, they must have been the ones to do this. :\

IPS vs TN panel, is the difference in response rates noticeable during gaming? I saw the TN listed as 8ms response time vs 25ms on the IPS panel.
I prefer the IPS panel for static screens but in gaming how much difference is there between these 2 panels in terms of motion blur/ghosting?

Will mainly depend on your level of gameplay. If you're doing so casually, not trying to compete or anything along those lines, you probably won't care about the difference. If competitive playing though that can be the difference between winning/losing and so a lot players opt to get every advantage they can get. I know I personally can't tell.

Correct, don't break anything and the warranty is still valid. The stickers are meant to deter the lesser qualified of people who may not have any business opening up and doing those sorts of things.

If you get an SSD as standard you will have 4x m.2 slots (Gen 3), 1x 2.5" (Gen 2), 1x optical (Gen 2)

You could replace the optical bay with a caddy to fit 2x mechanical HDDs if you like.

Please note that the ODD bay's SATA speed is SATA II (3 Gpbs) but not SATA III (6 Gbps).

    @dvojjnov
You also can watch this video:

to build in a 2nd 2.5" HDD or SSD by using one of the SATA III ports from the 4x m2 SSD bay, just some cables required (see video) but i will not recommend this - but maybe nice to know for somebody who need 2.5" HDD or SSD instead m2 SSD or ... whatever.

I think thats the better option (for peopole who will use and hold the internal optical drive or add an additional 2.5" SSD which they already have), else for an mechanical HDD an SATA II port will be good enough cause mechanical drive won´t come over 250MB/s read/write atm :)

I would recommend to buy some m2-2280 SSD´s instead (ok, the price tag is little hard for those, i´m from the EU and 250 bugs wanted for Crucial M550 m2 512GB drive, on the other side a Samsung 840 or Crucial MX100 512GB 2,5" will cost 160 bugs instead :(

    Questions:
    a) I´ve got hard Sound Stuttering in G.R.I.D Autosport and cannot fix this by audio drivers, anyone else or any solution/workarround?
    b) is there any alternative VBIOS available for the 970M/6GB or any "hacked driver" for OC (newer revision)? :D (never ending question)
    c) I recognized "tearing" on my TN panel, but maybe this is up on Battlefield 4 cause other games look "better", any recommend actions from driver side to fix this (i´m not really in this, may VSYNC make sense?) maybe i mixed up any option here
    d) how can i change the font for this forum here, the new font since relaunch is really hard to read :) (not the font for my text, the font for all text´s, instead using greasemonkey or any other plugins)

    Regards

    b) OCing has been shut down since R347. Nobody knows if it is disabled in R346.87 leaked by ASUS. Perhaps with modding inf you can have OCing. Someone installed it here but didn't tell about overclocking ability.
    c) - install RTSS for setting a FPS limit or do it in general profile through Nvidia Inspector or Nvidia CP;
    - Install D3D Overrider (for 32bit systems) or AMD Radeon Pro for both 64 and 32 bits (also may contain FPS limiter) for setting up Triple Buffering VSync.
This will be not the actual TB vsync but very close to it.
    d) try to change themes in lower bottom corner. Click on the Xenforo Theme.

To be exact Nvidia has bricked OC for Maxwell chips, my 680M overclocks fine via MSI AB with 347.09 and .25 drivers.

Yep so it seems they have black listed the maxwell chip overclockability in newer drivers :(so i´m still in hope of that MSI or any "hackers" will provide a different vBIOS soon for affected cards

    Cool i try :)

if you want a modded vbios or bios, for your msi notebook , try the official msi forums. there is an admin/mod there named SVET who can mod your bios or vbios for a couple of dollars over pay pal.
he is legit, i have had him mod my 16f3 bios and the 680m and both work as expected. he can hardcode the +135 and whatever else, into the bios, so you dont need to software OC after that.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?board=51.0

same guy maybe able to provide a tool to allow you to do your own vbios mods, but those can result in non bootable system if you set the clocks too high in the vbios

Nice @ DILLGAFF much thanks for this information.

I would prefer an software possibility for testing first over a BIOS mod as i think before "hardcode" any clock and voltage settings, you must test this and it must be water proofed stable in each situation / also must check out if the "hybrid power" will not cover too much peaks. A dream would be + 10 or 15 % more clocks (maybe 20) and same or less VCore for GPU. In theory, the "GPU speedstep" will still run or (via multiplier or whatever)?

Agree, too much Clock and voltage will brick the chip but i think if there is just "little to high" and system run slightly unstable, if you have iGPU from the i7 it wont be hard as you´ve got no iGPU as option, cause who ownes a second MXM matching in the GT72 :) or flash a different vBIOS without so much trouble arround (i remember my 5870M and flashing msi vbios ˆˆ)

    Greetings

In my country (europe / germany) MSI said no problem i can add m2 SSD´s and replace HDD and Memory as i will.

Also sems here it´s regulated due that the Retailer where i´ve got the item from, should follow up if manufacturer claims "customer can replace some stuff by it´s own" <- if they´re not abosolute "newbies" and got kind of technicial background.

To be waterproofe i would ask the retailer where you get the Notebook from, if he´s ok with that it should be no problem, i guess it should be no problem, else any computer store will do it for a few bugs and you´re safe if you let "replace" parts there.

As long as you know what you are doing and don't break anything your fine. I broke my sticker putting in a 500gb m.2 ssd, then about a week later noticed my spacebar was sticking. When I requested an rma there was a form that asked if any aftermarket parts where in it. I typed in the ssd model then said I would remove it BEFORE shipping. A day later I got an rma number and shipped my gt72 (aka baby) out. Of course I took said ssd out and restored the factory ssd. It came back good as new after about 2 weeks. (New year's weekend can be bad for rmas lol.) Msi doesn't want just any one in the computer so the sticker is put there, to scare the Less computer savvy.

    I'm in the U.S.

Instead of using 1 m.2 slot and that special connector, can i just use the cable/space of the DVD drive?
nobody needs a dvd drive, or at least, an external drive is very cheap (i already do have an external blu ray burner) ?
I think about getting this laptop, with the 970M. And as i already have a MX100 512GB Sata SSD, i would like to install it besides a 1TB HDD (for data, music, videos).
How is the noise on the laptop under idle/load? I´m stuck with the choice between the GT 72 (I7 4720HQ, 970M MXM) and the Alienware 15 (4710 HQ, 970M non MXM) and buying an amplifier later.
So far, i tend to buying the GT 72, as I will use this machine as my gaming rig (as my desktop is on the verge of dying) .

@ avalance : I´m from germany too, and in germany, you are allowed to change the components without losing your warranty unless you dont damage anything (e.g. scratch the motherboard, or so).
What is your experience of the laptop so far?

I also did not require an optical drive, but I currently do not know if theres an offer for an " HDD drive caddy 2,5" for optical drive bay" which you can use instead the optical drive (many of older laptops will get further HDD/SSD space this way). Anyone any ideas if this exist for the GT72 which matches from the size almost exactly? If youŕe fine with SATA2 and "loosing" the optical drive i absolutely prefer (less stress and maybe safer).

The MX100 will then run in SATA II mode only (in optical drive bay) but thats ok for games and so on, cause access time is given and i dont know if you will recognize the seconds between 240mb/s or 500mb/s (when a bunch of small data is read...). My Crucial M4 512GB is also running with SATA II only, i can not complain about the performance (and i do not copy very large files from SSD1 to SSD2 that often).

Now some impressions from my side of perspective, just what i think about:

The noise is great in "intel GPU" mode, when I turn on the 970M (mine is not 980M) seems for me the GPU fan is slightly louder than the CPU fan is, anyone may "complain" this too. But its not that loud, its okay, but not whisper quiet. Iḿ happy with the "not high frequency tone" so for me the fan noise its really good for such a little beast, i remember other systems where it sounds like "damn i run on highest fan speed i hope my hardware will not melt" ... that is not what you will think when the GT72 fans will speed up a little, it more sounds "everything under control, i raise RPM but still all fine" sound. Check out this review in german language http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Update-MSI-GT72-GTX-980M-Notebook.128927.0.html and set the price tag for the 970M and 1 SSD ;) ...

CoolerBoost 3 (i never use that) is really loud, but if you play with headset maybe you will not recognize.

Alternatives: Please note, the Medion Erazer with 980M you will get for round about 1800 EUR too (GT70 barebone but 980M) and the ASUS GHJsomething is also equipped with 980M and SSD and 16GB Memory under 2000 EUR, but iĺl prefer the GT72 over those both. Also an good choice is MYSN / Schenker in germany, but i guess price tag will become too high (i do not know).

Or see this thread http://www.notebookchat.com/index.php/topic,49169.0.html what are my "plus" and "Minus" for the GT72 but overall i did not see any better device out now in this build quality, ASUS is also nice but I/O ports on wrong side and no GPU replacement possible. The Medion Erazer is definitely the "past gen" Barebone, not bad too, but ....last gen barebone, i did not like the style that much, maybe it becomes too loud with 980M. Also HybridPower/Battery Boost will run often due to the 180Watt´s power brick in the GT70 barebone.

If you choose the GT72 (i´ll vote for that) check also if you can catch a SKU number with I PS display and/or 4720 processor, the IPS screens, they´re are marked as WideViewAngle or something like that in the data sheets, link for this is here about to compare the SKUs (pdf files from MSI) http://msi-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&postID=837827&highlight=datenbl%E4tter#post837827

The performance with 970M 6GB is more than ok for me, so Battlefield Hardlines Beta in "ultra" 1080p all maxed out round about 45 / 50 to 80 fps and supersmooth without drops, Battlefield 4 maxed out 1080p round about 40 to 70 fps but not so smooth like BF Hardlines, Battlefield 3 round about 50 to 170 fps absolutely no problems, GRID Autosport super smooth, Bioshock2 also .. everything i threw at it runs really solid with this machine and maxed details. instead of Crysis3 (means in maxed out settings it will have some framedrops from time to time but if you lower a little its ok). If something stucks a little, lower AA and that will help a lot.

Alienware also produce really really nice products but i cannot give an reply here, I did not had those actual ones on hand, but i remember the pricetag may be little higher than the MSI one in same configuration? Else, i think that s also an very good choice (if the build quality from the Alienwares is as good as in first gen i7 notebook times).

    My pro´s for GT72:
+ 4 x m2 SATA slots in AHCI or RAID
+ replacable GPU may be usefull in future
+ design, material and haptic/feel is awesome
+ super nice trackpad, i love that
+ super nice keyboard itself (instead of the layout)
+ my TN Panel is really good for a TN
+ the Sound System is awesome, also the 3,5" Audio Jacks
+ I/O ports are not on the right side where my mouse is thanks MSI
+ the cooling solution is really good for a gamer
+ no optimus but a button (requires restart)
+ great possibility to clean or service
+ it does not always look like a gamer (or like a car) just if you want to

    My complaints about the GT72:
    - pricetag is hard (but ok for what you get for, but lot over ASUS (here in EU))
    - accessability for 2 x SO Dimm slots (if they´re not already full)
    - keyboard layout (who like this? I almost just read complaints :D )
    - SATA II for optical bay and 2,5" slot (but thats not up on MSI more on intel)
    - keyboard lights could be increased, so some configs and view angles may "blend"
    - MSI "tools" on startup are little overdressed / bloatwared
    - my optical drive got a 20cent feeling (super cheap) but yeah i dont use that

    Regards

Hi, the SKU is on the outside of the box, where the UPC/EAN code and serial number should be (nearly this sticker). Normally retailers did often not list against SKU´s. It´s also just interesting if you´re wanted to have an IPS/WideView screen, i´m not sure but i´ve heard something about that almost of the i7 4720 models will have such a screen now (i cannot verify this, it could be different too). Regarding your CPU I guess there´s an IPS screen also cause thats an much higher model. You can check this by lookup your screen in device manager and google for it.

ProductSKU: BB7498H32G1T0DB81S ...seems quite different what people reporting here .
on the label it says :
LED panel : 17.3 Anti-Glare Wide View FHD .... I supose that this is IPS ?
HW info 64 reporst the monitor as :
Monitor Name: LG Philips [Unknown Model: LGD0469]
Monitor Name (Manuf): LG Display LP173WF4-SPF1

and what about the CPU 4980 ?? I see people reporting to have I 4710 / 4720 is my CPU higher spec or older model ?

Sry for this noob questions , I was out of this for almost 4 years as I didn't follow the tech in detail while I was satisfied with my Alinware M 17 X R2

@ Display: your "anti glare wide view" means it is IPS technology (they´re just not allowed to call it IPS).

This is matching with LP173WF4 information Display Mode : AH-IPS, Normally Black, Transmissive, source:
    http://www.panelook.com/LP173WF4-SPF1_LG Display_17.3_LCM_overview_21056.html

@ CPU you have the beast from the east :D so that is an really fast mobile CPU (i´ll prefer such mobile CPUs over using Desktop CPU´s in Laptops), all others (4710/4720) just lower clocked and cheaper if you buy a notebook (but performance is also great)

Better PassMark (Single core) score 2,249 vs 1,872 More than 20% better PassMark (Single core) score
Better PassMark score 10,015 vs 7,903 More than 25% better PassMark score

Seems you´ve got upper high end GT72 version ^_^

    Gratz and regards ;)
