Thanks. So, I just checked and apparently I do have that monitor. Interesting.

Stealth update, I guess. Funny I was waiting for it to happen, got impatient and bought anyway, and turns out it actually happened.

Only Nvidia knows about the changes, and usually they do not release such details to anyone, this includes MSI. -
Kevin and Tommy Moore. You both got i7-4720s and an IPS screen ???? WOAH!
That is a HUGE stealth upgrade! May I ask who the reseller was on Amazon that you purchased through ? It seems to change daily on the page.
MSI Computer GT72 DOMINATOR GT72 DOMINATOR PRO-211 17.3-Inch Laptop Amazon Page
Today it is 17th Street Photo, yesterday it was Xotic. It seems to change alot.
So.. I am wondering if some resellers have the i7-4720/IPS and some don't.. What's your thoughts? Nice surprise!! -
hi all has anybody found online seller for the SSD: Toshiba, THNSNJ128G8NU, for doing the super raid 3
-
Anyone on the 4GB card thing?
-
Hi Ulster, mine was xotic actually.
-
Mine was directly sold and shipped through Amazon.
So yeah it's hard to tell whether everyone has them or not. Seems like it though. Just have to confirm the i7-4720HQ. -
I got mine through Amazon as well and its IPS and 4720, I called them and asked about it and they told me that sometimes they don't update their listings for w/e reason and then I ordered it and it came with the above.
-
I haven't seen and can't find this 4GB SKU over here in North America. That must be an MSI Europe thing.
-
Will 4GB of vram be enough for high level skyrim modding or 1440p gaming?
-
hello. i own this laptop and i would like to know if the Swissgear IBEX 17" backpack is suitable for it. Unfortunately i cannot get my hands on everki beacon, so im searching for other solutions
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Since it's rated for 17" notebook then it should accommodate it just fine. -
Only found it on eBay for 3x the price... I might be upgrading to new set of four here pretty quick and if you are interested I'll sell you my two
-
This is my first post... I have to admit i bought the gt72 2qe 211-us as a "hold me over" laptop until my new alienware arrived (as my previous older alienware was defective and I got a refund through my extended warranty, since they couldn't repair it). After reading up on the new alienware's and all their issues (graphics amplifier issues, throttling issue due to it shipping with a 180 w power supply, the list goes on and on), and then using this gt72, i'm sticking with it... I was concerned about warranty support compared to dell, but after reading in here i am now sure that this MSI is a better choice over a current alienware 17!
I do have a couple of questions...
1.) when registering online will I have the chance to extend the 2 year warranty?
if so, how much extra is it and for how much longer can you extend it?
2.) I currently have a 128 m2.ssd and a 1TB 7200 RPM drive. I would like to remove the 128 ssd and replace with a 512 m2.ssd and also add an additional 512 m2.ssd. When replacing / adding additional m2.ssd's do they have to be configured for raid or can they just be configured for independent drives (disks)? -
yes i will be intrested ty very much
-
i might be intrested in buying your 128gb ssd
-
Honestly, I think that any game where the resolution and settings are so high that 4GB isn't enough, will be pushing the 980M to the limit already, and you'll have to reduce settings for one reason or the other.
In a Guru3D test of the desktop GTX 970, Shadows of Mordor w/ 2560x1440 – Ultra Quality + DSR @ 3840x2160 = almost 3.6 GB VRAM usage
So even that didn't hit 4GB. Will something eventually pass 4GB? Of course. Am I glad I have 8GB? Naturally. But you have to wonder what fps the 980M would be having at that point. -
Not sure if any of you guys know this, but I was sent back my hard drive from my old y510p laptop from lenovo. I'm trying to use it in my gt72, but can't get rid of any of the recovery partitions. Are they just locked down or is there another way? I've tried diskpart, partition wizard programs and the like, but no success. Anyone know?
-
Can't you like. format and merge the volumes?
-
1. Yes if you fill out the survey you get an automatic 3 month extension. For the 3 year warranty for me it was 199.00 USD. But that is basically only a one year warranty extension for 200 dollars, so for me it wasn't worth it. I instead went with a squaretrade accidental damage warranty for three years and I think that was about 200 as well, but I get the accidental damage coverage.
2. You can configure them as independent drive disks, however if you raid 0 them they will equal 1 tb anyway and you get a performance boost. The m.2 raid array on these notebooks is VERY fast and the boot times are really quick, my suggestion... raid them. Also, you need to make sure you buy the right drives. They have to be SATA interface, 2280 size cards and M+B connector (the one with a wide tooth in the center and two skinny teeth at each end).kickback likes this. -
Thanks!!
Any suggestions on make/model for the 512 m2.ssd ?? -
I, when I upgrade mine, will go with the crucial mx200 model. I will be doing four 256mb drives in raid 0
-
Lenovos can be tricky... They do a LOT of business end sales and Government sales. So a lot of their laptops have encryption stuff on it and it might do you well to try installing it in your Lenovo again to try and reformat. Lenovo has a pretty good 010 000 010 000 pass formatting tool that will clean wipe any drive of any trace of data. If I was in your situation I would reinstall it in the Lenovo then try reformatting using their tool and as soon as it is done, pull it out and reinstall it in your new laptop.

The Samsung 850 evo m.2 500GB is the fastest around and is what I am personally getting.

You know, these cards, as awesome as they are don't do as well with higher resolution 1440 and 4k setups as the majority wants them to. That is not to say they won't run smooth, but for some reason the majority wants to max out their games on high or ultra high and run the highest resolution their monitor can handle, then complain about lag and stutter. You can game just about anything on 1440p with a high end gaming card, but you should reduce the settings to a lower level or even a lower resolution if you want a clean gaming experience. I got a friend who does competitions and he NEVER maxes out his settings. He has a high end uber card setup, but he keeps his settings on medium. He says he can't really tell the difference between medium and high when he is competing because he is immersed in game play. That makes a lot of sense to me because all maxing out your settings does is smooth out the textures and lines in a hundred different ways. For me I have even turned down the settings a few times because I felt that all the AA and other crap just kind of blurred the game up and took away some of the crispness that the game had before. Benchmarks are fun and all and it's fun to stress test CPUs and find out how high your GPU can rank out at, but that is all just measuring how long our ... Well you know. In all reality it should be about a good gaming experience. When I buy a top of the line card, I buy it not to see how high I can firestrike it, (not to say that I don't benchmark it), but I buy it so I don't have to buy another one for 5 years. And when I buy the most über fantastic cpu on the market, I buy it so my computer will remain peppy for the next 5 years. When I buy a water cooler, I don't buy one to overclock my cpu till it breaks, I buy it to extend the life of my cpu for a couple years. So really what I'm trying to say is that your 980m with 4gb or 8gb will play anything for at least the next 3 years to 6 years if you game on medium settings. Shoot look at the 680m! Released in 2012 and it STILL plays most games on high to maxed settings from 30 to 60 FPS. I know there is a lot of my opinion in there, but from my 20 years of experience with computers, in the last 10 years there has been an increasingly weird infatuation with benchmarking that has become more important than gaming itself. Nothing against benchmarks btw, they are fun and it's a blast seeing what your computer can handle, but the 980m you currently have in your lappy is maxwell architecture which was designed as a workstation solution for high end video editing and will run any game on the market for the next 5 years, so why worry about whether it's 4gb or higher? Ok I'm off my soapbox here, I just wanted to get that off me chest...
when did this happen??? I didn't know they had an evo m.2 solution... Edit: Belay my last, I did see this before. I compared the specs and they were pretty close crucial had em beat on random read iops, but Samsung won on random write iops. The quencher for me was the price... For a 256mb solution, crucial was $115 and Samsung was $135. I couldn't justify spending 80 more dollars on Samsung, no matter how much of a fanboy I am, for four drives with a 2,000 iops improvement on random write speeds. In a nutshell, I figure I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway so why spend the money. Both brands make EXCELLENT flash memory solutions and crucial has been a leader in flash memory for years so .... I'll save 80 bucks and go with crucial this time, sorry Samsung!Last edited: Apr 3, 2015 -

You can run diskpart command in command prompt.
1. Boot from Windows installation media/drive.
2. Press SHIFT + F10 to launch command prompt.
3. If using a RAID array, be sure to load driver first before pressing SHIFT + F10.
4. Run diskpart, then you can do a clean to purge fully. -

It just happend
See the anandtech review. The m.2 500GB is the pick of the set though the 500GB mSATA was not tested.

I did see it before, I just forgot, but I'm gonna stick with crucial this time unless these samsungs go on sale before I upgrade. I edited my previous post on why.

I have a few questions, I can't get an extended warranty on my new laptop, it says its not eligible. I bought it through Amazon, is that an issue? Would like to get the full 3 years if possible.
If I open the back of my laptop to install new m2 drives will it void my warranty?
Also would like to know about fan control, any way to control the fans on this bad boy?
Last question, re-pasting GPU and CPU with IC Diamond, good idea or no? and does that void the warranty? -
I had the same issue when I bought my laptop. Call the tech support number on the bottom of your laptop and tell them the issue. My issue was that the manufacture date was overriding the purchase date and MSI fixed it on the spot. Your warranty should be 24 months from the date of purchase +3 months if your filled out the survey.
Buying From Amazon does not change your warranty, that's where I purchased mine.
You can always buy a square trade warranty that is about the same price and you get accidental damage for 3 years instead of just warranty service.
Yes and no. Open your computer up at your own risk. If you screw something up in there, you WILL void your warranty. But MSI is pretty cool with modders as long as you don't screw stuff up, MSI will service the OEM products if they fail. They just won't mess with aftermarket stuff.
You can use a variety of fan control software and the dragon gaming console has a fan control in there as well, (if my memory serves me). There is also a button on the left side that will boost your fans to max if you press it.
IC diamonds CEO is a doosh and you couldn't pay me to buy their stuff. Google IC diamond and Grandmother and you'll see why I feel that way. As far as reposting with diamond paste? Well I wouldn't do that unless you have cooling issues. If your laptop is fine don't screw with it. I mean we're talking about a 3-5c difference between silver and diamond paste. I say don't mess with it till the new NVIDIA mxm line comes out and you are ready to upgrade. I am currently going to upgrade from an 880m to a 980m in the near future and I will use antec's diamond paste on both the cpu and GPU when I do.kickback likes this. -
I did look at the review just now but dang it, the mx200 wasn't benched against it. The mx100 didn't do so well against the evo, but I really want to know how the mx200 fairs...

Use Arctic Silver for CPU, IC diamond for GPU.
GPU runs hotter than CPU, so you don't need to use IC diamond for CPU. -
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your help =)
I can't seem to find any fan software, trying to use speedfan but can't figure it out. Oh and one last thing, square trade have you dealt with them before how is their service? -
My temps are great, I just wanted to know for future reference. My GPU runs under 72c but when it hits 70c it turns on full blast almost and would like to lower it just a bit. The CPU fan doesn't even break a sweat but having it go a little faster would make the GPU run a little cooler or no?
-
I´currently thinking about to add an 2nd SSD but the m2-2280 drives are so expensive, what really sucks.
Atm i´ve got a Crucial M550 512GB in it, if i add an additional 500GB drive (MX200) and go for raid, then i will loose 12GB but does not matter.
I hope the m2 SSDś will become much cheaper with the time. Goal is 4 x 512GB but not for 1000 bugs

I just love this laptop guys, what a great buy!
Have few more questions if someone could chime in and help please,
Want to know if these would work in the GT72:
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Hype...d_sim_e_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=16X5ZMHB71WA1K2D7J3P
And these I would like to get 3 more with the one I already have:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGIVY1G/ref=twister_B00U82O92U?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Are both of those ok to install and will the Original M2 work with these Samsung ssd's? -

Both of those links look like they will work.kickback likes this. -

I would get a single 512GB over those 3 128gb drives.

Sweet! Thank you =)
Meaker, I was thinking about that and maybe i'll just buy 2x512's insead, I'll just have to save up a little. When I do decided to upgrade, will I have to do a full clean install and if so where do I get a install disc/iso?
Its pretty easy to set up a raid right, I've never done one before even on my desktop I run 1x128 and a 3tb HDD.
Last question I promise, do you or anyother 3rd party reseller do Upgrades on the laptop screen? What I mean is can you replace the standard screen with a 120mzh panel? Or are we pretty much locked into the screen?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Unfortunately we do not have any 120hz screens. For liability reasons we only offer doing upgrades on computers that were originally purchased from us. -
Xotic doesn't as stated above, but I would contact the other major resellers and see if they can do it. Powernotebooks and GentecPC have been known to install aftermarket stuff for people and are also VERY reasonable with their maintenance costs both are outstanding companies that seem to really want to help people out. I would definitely ask them or if they could *cough* chime in, you might get an answer right meow!kickback likes this.
-
Totally agree with meaker I would at least go with the 256mb version. That is what I am going to do that way once I get all four in raid I will have 1TB of storage, minus overprovisioning of course... I can't justify spending 400 more for a 4 drive setup just to get 2 TB of storage just yet. For me, I will only be running OS, Games and CPU/GPU instensive programs on the raid array and all other programs on the platter drive. So I won't need anywhere near 2TB just yet and I can always upgrade in the future when new costs come down on 2280's.kickback likes this.

One of my co-workers was nice enough to inform me that constantly staring at your order status screen on GenTech's website will not actually make it ship faster.....
-
True, but I hear the F6 key makes the order process go faster...
-
Maybe Gentech took good friday off.
-
Could be, but have patience. Think about it, just 200 years ago, it would take 6 months to get something from the east coast to the west coast. We are very fortunate in the time we live in. We can get packages from the east coast to the west coast, next business day. Most priority mail packages are delivered in 2 days or less, I think that is pretty awesome and I am happy I live in a time where a global marketplace is at my fingertips...

So .... I can officially join the GT72 Dominator Pro (980m) thread because I have just upgraded my GT72 Dom Pro 2PE to the GTX 980M!!! Super excited I'll post some benchmarks below. My score jumped from 5664 to 8418 and it obviously runs much smoother. My temps seem to be good, though I don't know what everyone else is getting... I will add them below.
I repasted it with Antec Formula 7 Nano Diamond and Temps are as follows...
Idle:
4710HQ@36C
GTX 980m@30C
Intel Burn Test, Standard, 10 cycles:
4710HQ@73C
Firestrike Test Normal (Score 8418)
Full on Fan:
Fan's on Normal Shifted to Sport:
Firestrike Test Ultra had about the same temps, no use posting it...
Unigine Valley, Extreme HD setting, ran 3 loops before running bench. Temps peaked at 75C. Ran Fans at Full Speed for the bench, didn't want to cook my cpu with a regular fan profile running valley through 3 loops then benching, temps were pretty high at 75C, I was hoping they would be lower...
Benchmark:
Temps:
Benchmark Stock no modded vbios/system bios or overclocking (and I'm not planning on messin with it anyway)
