The problem is, I cannot boot into windows at all. Rebooting the laptop does nothing other than load me into the BIOS again. Moreover, my SSD is no longer listed inside the BIOS. I'm not sure what could have caused this. It was working perfectly fine last night. I left it on over night, it was not moved at all, and then this happens. Nothing I do will boot it into windows though.

If the drive is not listed in BIOS, there are only two option for you.
1st look if any BIOS entry which belongs to hdd is corrupt.
2nd remove drive and look if any other System is able to recognize it.
    Maybe your drive is corrupt.
    Hope it helps.

Nothing appears to be corrupt, though I am not sure what it would look like if it were. It looks pretty normal to me. It detects my 1TB HDD but not my SSD boot drive.

As far as removing the drive goes, I cannot do not without breaking the warranty sticker. This is a brand new laptop, so I do not want to do that. I would prefer that MSi reply to my tech support inquiry, but I only placed that just the morning so I am still waiting to hear back. I would assume SSD failure would be covered under their warranty.

You don't need a usb stick to put the bios on. Since it's UEFI, you just need to have the .rom file on your HDD or SSD and load it from UEFI, then update it and power off the PC. Power it on and boot directly to UEFI to restore best default config. In 2015, it's not 100% secure (but almost) to flash a UEFI so there is no real point to hesitate flashing the latest rev, especially if you have troubles.

I can try, but I seriously doubt the issue is the BIOS. All signs are pointing toward SSD failure.

Yep, sounds like another SSD failure, which seems to be a growing problem of late, with the Kingston SSD's. Get with your reseller or MSI.

Does anyone have a great suggestion for an external screen for my msi gt72 w/980m. I want to have a great 27" monitor while I am at home.

You can break the sticker, as long as you don't get rough and break anything inside. I broke the sticker to put in my 512GB SSD and about a month later sent my laptop in because the spacebar was sticking. I just removed the 512GB SSD and restored the laptop to factory with the stock 128GB and 1TB HDD before sending it in. MSI doesn't really care that much about the sticker so much as if you busted something inside, such as the slots or sockets or such by forced removal.

As sad to say I am now inclined to agree, if it's not showing up or anything after reboots and BIOS resets, then yeah, you probably do have a bad SSD.

Nice to know, so far I've not had issues to update my BIOS, but for future reference glad to know this. I know this wasn't probably directed exactly at me, but I do know I mentioned myself about BIOS updating so figured I would follow up on that. Thanks :)

Thanks for the help (to everyone else too who replied to me). MSi has suggested I RMA it so that is what I am going to do. Sucks that I have to pay shipping costs though, and that it, at maximum, could take 37 business days to get fixed and shipped back to me. I teach at a community college and this is the end of the semester. I have a lot of course work related items on there, so this hurts me a lot. Thankfully, I am not so dumb that I do not have some of it backed up, just not the most recent items. I might have to do some guesswork regarding some of my students' grades sadly.

For anyone who has had to RMA with MSi, should I worry about the HDD being formatted, or would they only do that if need be? I imagine if the issue is just a faulty SSD, the HDD shouldn't have to be touched, right? In any case, I suppose June will be when I am able to enjoy this otherwise great laptop again.

    Le sigh.

So today my GT72 2QE decided to freeze randomly. After powering it off, it refuses to power back on. The power LED flashes, I can hear the components attempting to power on, but it just resets and starts the process all over again.

After calling tech support, they had me try to reset the battery (flip laptop over and push a paper clip into the little hole in the bottom right) for 5 seconds. This didn't work for me. :(

    So RMA it is, yay!

Hopefully this is an isolated incident, and none of you have to deal with this problem.

It can happen :( Hopefully it gets resolved quickly for you as it seems like a definite case of repair needed (and at least investigation by a technician).

Well, I officially sent mine in yesterday; stuck on my old Dell until my issue gets resolved. Shipping costs suck, though I suppose 20 bucks for insurance on a 2200 laptop is not bad.

It is, with a heavy heart I had to get rid of my MSI. :( Financial responsibilities came first. On the plus side, someone traded me:
Alienware 14 with: i7-4700MQ 2.4GHZ, 8GB Ram, 256GB SSD, 750GB, 14" 1080p Disp, Nvidia GTX 765M 2GB, Windows 7 x64 and enough cash to cover all my bills. So I feel that despite the loss of the MSI I still did ok. If any one has any questions though, I'll still be around to help. It's been a great run, and I wish things where better so I could have kept it, but I guess not. Oh well, my Alienware still gets all my gaming done I want.

I would say: Downgrade to Sidegrade. I know I didn't push the MSI's 980M to it's max with the games I play. Heck I appearently have been living under a rock as I found out a couple of my games are frame-rate capped at 30 fps! The 770M in my Alienware 17 plays all my games that I presently own on "High" or "Ultra" at 1080p just fine. 45 fps or greater. I can't tell on some games the difference between High and Ultra, but can on Resolution, so I'll take lower settings when needed. So far though none and I'm happy. ( I ended up getting the Alienware 17 in a trade after I got my MSI, so I didn't know about the 17's capabilities.

The reason I say sidegrade is my girlfriend will be using the 14 and she doesn't really push games as much as I do. So it doesn't bother me much. The 14 is a nice laptop though and probably could do what I want it to in a pinch.

I will say this, the Alienwares yes both, have a better keyboard on them. I wasn't really thrilled about the keyboard on this MSI. It was a good one, don't get me wrong, but the typing experience on the Alienware is batter if you ask me. Even the "0" key on the numpad is a "2-key" size like it should be!

Anyhow yeah, downgrade because will nothing really compares to the 980M when mobile and using a single gpu. Sidegrade as my games seem happy on the 17's 770M, and I'm not the one using the 14. Plus I did get my bills taken care of as well. The tech in me weeps, the responsible adult in me says "you did what you needed to with a short timespan to do everything in". So yeah.

A note: I will probably be offline for awhile. I am going out of town to a friend's house where he just moved in as he needs some help getting it nice and fixed up. He won't have internet for about 5 days. I can use my phone in a pinch, but if anyone messages me please be patient. :) This may not be my last post for the day (I am in Eastern Time), but it'll be close.

I am planning to buy a MSI GT72 2QD - 1044xes ( Spanish model). Is there any way to know if the new IPS panel or old Chimei TN panel mounted ?

In specifications says : 1920x1080 Matt eDP , and MSI website listed as " optional wide view angles IPS panel "

I come from a Asus G751JT with IPS panel and the truth is that it would be a big step backward buy a GT72 with Chimei panel ( as it had in the MSI GT70 , Clevo P170SM , etc ) .

    P.D; Sorry my bad english

    Enjoy.

So my RMA status was just updated to shipping (not sure if it means shipped or it means they are about to ship it; there is no tracking number so...). I am rather impressed by the speed in which MSi has handled this. Here's hoping everything is indeed repaired. No I get to sit anxiously for my still-new laptop to arrive back to my greedy little hands.

So... I managed to grab a top of the range MSI GT72 off well known auction site for a bargain price. It comes fully loaded but the panel is TN rather than IPS.

Now my question is, who is the manufacturer and what is the exact product number of IPS panel fitted in newer models?

Has anyone attempted to replace the screen on MSI GT72?

I'm fairly comfortable with opening up and fixing computer hardware.

EDIT: apparently the ips panel is the LG Philips LP173WF4-SPF1, ID: LGD046

Would someone who owns GT72 with IPS screen be able to confirm using HWInfo?

I don't get why everyone's particularly bothered about the TN panel. In fact I find mine really really good! If anything its faster than IPS which helps for games and I'm guessing (not sure) it must be cheaper too?

After all there's always an option to plug this in an external monitor, which is going to be way way better than any laptop IPS monitor.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying TN is better than IPS. All I'm saying is if you managed to get such a cool computer at a good price. Stop trying to mod it in such extreme ways because it's probably a bad investment. Start having fun with it and if you have extra cash, get a good external monitor, which will most likely have a longer effective lifespan compared to a laptop.

    Thanks for your input.

I don't feel like replacing the LCD panel on a laptop is a huge job. You'd be surprised how easy it can be.
Can hardly call it a mod either as it would be putting and OEM part in.

If the TN screen is decent I'll keep it in.

When will gt72s with broadwell/skylake start to ship? The performance of skylake seems to be quite a bit of a improvement, and the battery life with broadwell would be a lot better.

Of course, you're better off not buying a gaming laptop like this if you're aiming for battery life, but it's always a nice addition.

Premium laptops should come with premium screens. It's that simple. MSI seems to know this.
It's 2015, time for TN panels and having to adjust for viewing angles to go the way of the Dodo.

Broadwell is June/July, Skylake even later.

Most of users probably don't care about the panel as long as price is right, but there are many users (video production, photo editing, avid gamers) who lean more on the premium quality so panel type is a VERY important factor. Besides, if it's going to be a PC that you are going to use frequently, paying a bit more will be beneficial in a long term point of view.

Just wondering. What will void the warranty? I am thinking about getting this laptop, but want to update the M.2 SSD to a 500 GB.

How are the speakers are with this laptop?

Does this laptop screen IPS or TN?

    Let me know. Thank you.

As far as I know you can open up the laptop and replace the components without voiding the warranty, unless you break something in the process.
Some models of GT72 have TN panels, some have IPS (newer models).

I accept every point that you make, other than "avid gamers". If I was an avid gamer, I'd prefer a TN panel for the speed compared to an IPS with better colours but a bit of ghosting.

Those 2~3 ms isn't noticeable to human eyes.
Besides, refresh rate is more important.
For example, Asus VX279Q IPS 27" LED Monitors, 1920x1080, 80M:1 DCR, 5ms, HDMI, VGA.

I finally bought the MSI Gt72 2QD and effectively the panel is IPS (LP173WF4-SPF1 ).
Now I have a problem with my panel .
In the upper right corner of the screen seems to be something like " ghosting " .

By displaying a static image for a period of time (3-4min are enough ) this leaves a trail or shadow visible only with light-colored background (eg default blue color windows start) and this shadow takes several minutes disappear.

There is some kind of solution to this problem or I'll have to choose a return ?

I tried to apply pressure gently to the affected corner and does not seem to solve anything.
I have also tried several videos with quick images about 2h , but the problem persists .

This is only an example. In this picture can see a shadow of the google chrome tool bar on the upper corner.

It is not normal, best to contact point of purchase for exchange, otherwise contact MSI directly if it's beyond return period.

Well, I got my laptop back from RMA. The SSD was replaced and it is working now, however, the AC adapter no longer works so I cannot charge it. This is just great.

Did you send AC adapter altogether for the RMA?
Does your AC adapter have a LED light (power indicator) on it?
