I don't think it will limit the performance of the laptop, just maybe some of the shortcut keys and the power saving features.

Hufffttt, pffftt i don't know what to say, it's so hard to find driver for brand new laptop 2015

Not too surprising since it's an OS it does not ship with.
-
It's just a special circumstance where the older OS is being phased out.

The "desktop" GTX 980 in a laptop is set for the MSI GT72.

...I've heard that it was to be soldered only, but being in the GT72 [...and SLI'd in the GT80] is there a chance at MXM?Last edited: Sep 22, 2015 -

If they keep all of these components the same then the GPU performance shall be limited. -
-
Okay MSI, you promised early GT72 owners that we'd be able to upgrade to the next generation of GPUs. Promised, with no caveats .
I intend to collect, even if it means you give me an entirely new chassis.nightingale, invertedsilence and hmscott like this. -

We've been expecting the death of MXM 3.0 for years. Well... here it is.
Once you put full on desktop GPUs in laptops, and drop the 'M', you don't just go back in the next year's releases. Cut down flagships are over imo.Last edited: Sep 22, 2015invertedsilence, Kevin@GenTechPC and Gearhunter like this. -

even with the garbagely soldered cpu's i can at least take solace that nvidia is still trying to remain relevant and break new boundaries.
I wonder how much of an upgrade the new pascal would be, as well as if the initial generations of gt72's will be outdated and irrelevant, since very well from videos it appears that manufacturers have redone the pcb and power delivery.
i eagerly await if i can legally get a new laptop from msi's promisesinvertedsilence likes this. -

You would expect at least a similar increase as the 580M to 680m.

As Kevin from GenTechPC was saying - the processor could become a major bottleneck. What about power delivery? MXM bandwidth? All these things could come into play of messing up the 1080m's performance. -
thegreatsquare Notebook Deity
Power delivery is a larger problem, but hopefully the smaller 16nm can aid in mitigating the power differences. My biggest concern for the longevity of the functionality of my 980m is Nvidia's asynchronous shader issue, so Pascal brings some hope that it will be improved. It is possible that even a "1070m" would be better than the laptop 980 if hardware support for AS is improved in Pascal.
...I wouldn't mind a new CGN 1.2 on 20nm/16nm option either.invertedsilence and nightingale like this. -
Hmm, maybe I'm wrong, but I thought on some of the articles I saw had the GTX 980 actually on an MXM card. It looked a bit bigger than the 970m/980m. Not sure if this is a pic of the MXM card for the GTX 980, but Anandtech says it'll be available in MXM format.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9649/nvidia-gtx-980-in-notebooks
Eurogamer has the same pic and also is saying it's MXM:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-nvidias-next-laptop-graphics-chip-is-gtx-980
If you get a GT72/GT80 with one of those babies in it, it should be able to handle nearly any upgrade (heatwise anyway) for the foreseeable future. -
Another question, slightly different topic.
How portable would you say the GT72 is? In size and weight, how does it compare to a GT60? -
Prostar Computer Company Representative
GT60
15.5"(L) x 10.5"(W) x 2.1"(H)
7.7 lbs
GT72
16.85" x 11.57" x 1.89"
8.4 lbs -
Right, but it's much more so than the GS60 vs the GT72 I'm currently considering. I know the GS60 has it beat. The question I'm trying to figure out is can I live with the bulkier laptop.
Sounds like add about an inch to each dimension and a pound, and that'll give me the idea. Thanks! -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yup, it's like Hummer vs Corolla comparison.

Hey!
So, my new GT72 Dominator Pro landed a few days ago and so far I love almost everything about it. I do however have until Tuesday to decide on whether to keep it or if to use my regret buy option, and let me tell you why I am considering it.
The colors on the screen look very dull. I have read just about every topic on every page on google and I can't seem to figure out if I have an IPS display or the TN panel.. so:
Do I have the IPS screen or not?
Regardless of which angle I view the screen from it doesn't invert the colors or change the picture, it all looks the same! I was thinking that perhaps I have the IPS display but with a bad color calibration (which I have read lots of people are having), or maybe I simply have the TN panel and there's nothing I can do about it besides returning it..
Moreover, googling on the exact name of the laptop generates nothing at all.. Underneath it, it says MSI gt72 2qe-647NE and on the sticker on top it says GT72 2QE Dominator Pro.
I am going crazy here... What do I have? And in case the color calibration is wrong, what do you recommend?

Marcus -

Does MSI have a changelog resource for BIOS revisions?
I see the current is E1781IMS.314 which only shows a change of "Modify system BIOS Major/Minor/Family version"
I am on .310 so it looks like I could be a several versions behind 314 so I'm curious as to what changed in between them.
I know the typical rule of thumb with BIOS updates is if everything works fine, leave it alone, but I am curious if there is something I am missing between the revs. Thanks! -

Yes, that is an AH-IPS. Same panel as my 1442US has. Everything I have read about that panel is they are quite good.
What calibration tool did you download? -
Not even MSI themselves could help me out, so you you can't imagine how much I appreciate it.
I used the MSI True Color from the utility downloads page. It comes with a few calibrated presets of which 2 worked really well.

I recentlly bought a MSI GT72 2QE 1817UK, the cooling is brilliant but the fan vibration noise at idle really get on my nerve.
When the laptop is at idle, the vibration noise comes from the cooling fan (I believe it's the CPU fan, but not 100% sure) generating very loud vibrations, which is unbearable especially during the night time. Pressing on the top of the keyboard (where the speakers are), especially on the left side, the vibration sound will be dramatically lowered and the laptop becomes very quiet.
GT72 owners, I need your help, could you help me check if this is the same on your laptop (I do wish you have a very quiet machine) please.
Thanks in advance. -

sRGB and Office when I am just browsing the web and/or writing documents. Haven't tried anything else on it yet -
I think the true-color app on the MSI website is a new version from Sept 25 compared to my pre-installed version, I might put the new one in for kicks.

Question: Can the 980M of a NON G-Sync model drive an 144 hz external monitor?
I am thinking of getting one or two external monitors for use at home and I'm not sure if 144hz is an option. Any reason to go over 1080p? I don't want anything bigger than 27" and anything smaller than 24". I suppose more Hz is more important than bigger resolution, correct?
Haven't bought a monitor in a while so I'm kind of lost regarding recent technologies. Ideally I would like to avoid noticeable ghosting. However, I'm not sure if going for a TN external monitor is a wise choice nowadays.
Any suggestions? -
When I put the m.2 SSD in my 2QD I noticed a 2.5" bay next to the existing HDD, but no port that I can see to hook it too. Is it possible to hook another standard 2.5" drive in that bay short of doing really elaborate modifications?
I would like to pick up another 1TB or maybe even a 5400RPM 2TB just for bulk storage, but not keen on doing anything really significant for modding especially since it's still new and in warranty. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes via an m.2 sata to standard sata adapter and splitting power from the populated 2.5" bay.
-
Meaker, you guys sell those adapters? Are there any issue with splitting the power?
I saw a video online how to do it and it didn't seem too hard. My main concern (besides the power issue) was getting the wires to lie flat so there wasn't a bulge on the bottom.
Or if we buy a laptop from your shop, can you prep it ahead of time to make it a drop-in addition? Or could I send the drive out ...Last edited: Sep 28, 2015 -

With new models i can play csgo with the screen at 75hz or 100hz? Thanks

Finally I bought a Msi GT72 2QE with cpu Broadwell , but I have two small problems :
1º, I have a lot bleeding in the upper right corner . Maybe it could be improved by reducing the pressure of the bezel ?? As I can remove the bezel ??
2º My unit only includes 1TB HD , and have acquired a Samsung 850 Pro 512GB 2.5" .
I've done several tests , and read and write speeds are very low ( 280 / 260Mb / s ) .
I checked the BIOS is in AHCI, chipset drivers are installed, and have executed chipset tweaker SSD , but the speeds do not improve.
Someone knows what can be the reason? -
Sounds like it's in a 3Gbps port. I have the same drive in my GT60 and I made that mistake.
Also be sure to update the firmware and optimize the drive with the Samsung software that came with it. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
2. The secondary bay only provides 3Gbps therefore SSD should not be installed into this drive bay. -
Only M.2 bay is SATA3 ??
How can remove the bezel ? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes the 4 M.2 ports take the 4x SATA III channels that the chipset can give.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
For M.2, since all of the high speed ports are designed to go there thus why other ports are slower. If you want to benefit from SSD, first you will have to buy M.2 version of SSD such as Samsung 850 EVO. -
Is there a modded vbios for the 4gb version of the 4720hq ips models yet?
Also, is there anything I should know about my vbios before I try to flash it? -
The Problem Is That I have much bleeding . I never see this quantity in another laptop .
With slightly you reduce the amount of bleeding would be satisfied.
And now I Have another problem...
Playing CS:GO about 15 minutes to suffered complete freezing 2 times , having to force a shutdown with power button pressed .
Past A complete test Furmark + Prime95 stress for 1 hour and WHOLE The system was stable .
I found in the MSI forums another people with random freezing with the GT72 i7 Broadwell .
Has anyone else with this problems? -
You Sure That the main bay 2,5" is SATA2? It is very strange found a sata2 bay (except in the optical drive) .
From the MSI GT70 2OD or AW M17x R3 I did not see a bay SATA2 on main Bay..
If I apply a little pressure on the corner or the center of the screen is Substantially reduced bleeding , so I think It could be solved by adjusting the pressure of the panel.
How can I remove the Bezel ? By making lever with a credit card would be enough? I do not see any screws . And I have not found any video or picture about remove the panel.Last edited: Oct 2, 2015
