Ah, Yeah a lot of reviewers said it only fits in the large compartment. i was sold when i saw the dedicated sleeve but i read the reviews. IF i were to buy that bag and not use the sleeve compartment, how protected would the laptop be?
Would the corners steer clear of the zips? Bottom padding sufficient?
I'll be traveling to uni 5 days a week via cycle so I have no clue if the large compartment would be sufficient

Yeah it's a great bag. Solid as a rock. Well protected notebook. Loads of pockets for mouse, gamepad, mouse mat and power pack and a weekend away worth of clothes.

Hmm, I might consider it then because of the price and the quality of SwissGear. I was skeptical about using the large compartment since people have said their GT72 doent fit the sleeve compartment, but since it fits (the large compartment)i guess it's fine. Thanks for clearing it out.
Is it fine if you can send a picture of the laptop in the large compartment? :D
I want my £51 to be well worth it

1st pic, just placed in large compartment
2nd, to show tightness of zip
3rd, to show how close zip is to edge.

    Still can't complain for a tenner :D

I personally recommend the Solo ACV700. It is very affordable. The main compartment is massive and it's padded from all sides (even the zipper side). Also, I have more pockets than I know what to do with it.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, fits snuggly in but on Amazon.co.uk it's only 1 pound less than the SwissGear which has a lot of good reviews about their quality. I will let you guys know which one i do get in the end

I ran benchmarks for about 3 hours with an overclocked 980 and I think my battery went from 100 to 96 over that 3 hour period. Personally I feel that is something I can live with.

I will say though that the 230w adapter did get a bit toasty!

One question as to the GT72s units (and I assume this is the same on the GT72).

With the m.2 drive slots, I noticed the two preinstalled nvme SSD had thermal strips that connected to the heat sink.

I had two normal m.2 ssd drives (850 evo and a Corsair) that I wanted to add but no thermal strips to attach to the heat sink. Would it be dangerous to run those without thermal strips? I don't remember ever having thermal strips on my clevo unit for those drives. I know those nvme drives run a lot hotter.

Quick question: I have the GT72 with 3 x 128 Toshiba SSD's (RAiD0). My restart times are 11.26 seconds to shut down and 11.14 seconds to start to windows welcome screen. Is this as quick as expected? I only ask as I've just put a Crucial BX200 240GB SDD in the Mrs's laptop and it boots as quick (possibly fractionally quicker) as my GT72.

    Hi,

    I have a GT72 2QD Dominator. With GTX 970m and the G-Sync enabled screen.

I know that the GPU can be upgraded to the GTX 980m, has anyone done that? How difficult is the process? And is it worth $900?

Also, is it possible to upgrade the screen to a 3K or a 4K display by any chance?

    Warm Regards
    Andrew

I don't recommend spending the money yet for 2 reasons:
    1. The 980M doesn't (officially) meet the minimum requirements for VR.
    2. Pascal video cards (GTX1080/1070) are about to be released for the desktop. It's only a matter of time before the mobile versions are released. Performance wise, you're looking at double the performance (at least according the non-mobile benchmarks) for the same price as what you're paying today.

Hey, you make some great points,

Another question though, is that, would my laptop be able to handle the newer cards? And will they even be interchangeable with my GTX 970m?

I'd say so because the interface on the new 1070/1080 still use PCIE 16x just like the 970/980, so I'm not expecting any drastic changes. It will probably still use the MXM 3.0b form factor. Power consumption wise, I assume since Pascal chip is smaller (14nm I think?), it won't be an issue powering it on mobile versions.

There's always a chance I may be wrong, but I think it's worth the wait. Don't you?

Yes, it definitely is worth the wait, if things go south, can just upgrade the the 980m anyways.

Their official site does say this though:

"Newer GT72 models featuring the GTX970M/GTX980M in their turn will be upgradable to future graphics generations in 2015"

    so thats promising lol

Even if you can't upgrade to 1070/1080, at least the prices on the 980M will be much cheaper than it is today.

So i got the GT72 6QD (Finally) and i gotta say, it's such a treat. The keyboard is pleasant. the GTX 970m is ridiculously good, compared to my gaming desktops GTX 750. I updated all my drivers and etc. The laptop spoils me with the stunning LG G-Sync display.

I just have a slight issue with Steel Series Engine.
I uninstalled the old one and installed the new one which has cloud functionality and etc. But after restarting the laptop, SSE doesnt detect my keyboard (It's lit only white).
It says 'device not connected'. On device manager it shows Steelseries PS/2 keyboard.

Any fix for this? This HAS happened to me before and i resinstalled the Engine, but if this starts happening after a restart, which isnt very often, it would be quite annoying. Any firmware update for the keyboard? I have restarted and shut down the laptop multiple times. Dont want to lose my infinite configurations i made per game, I dont trust the 'beta' cloud sync.

    Cheers!

    GT72 6QD Dominator

First, when I initially got this notebook, Dragon Gaming Center showed it idled about 35*c. Now, in the same scenario, 2 months later it seems to idle more in line with 45*c. Earlier this week I was rendering video in PowerDirector and I saw it was up to 85*c. The fans were still at idle speed, so I hit the button to bring them to max, and after a minute or so, they were at about 70*c. Is this normal behavior? The fan won't come on till it gets even hotter than that? How about that idle temperature? I have it on Balanced power plan, Energy Saver shift mode, and eco off monitor profile. I have a 2nd monitor plugged in with HDMI and the GPU is at 44*c, and the CPU is at 49*c

Second, where do you guys source the GPUs from for these? I searched a few weeks ago and couldn't find any.

Update: Steelseries Engine still malfunctions. This normally occurs when the laptop is put to sleep. Any idea how to fix this?
Also, does anyone know how to make SS3 start up before logging in? Having some light while entering the password would be pretty handy tbh.

I'm running the latest SS engine 3. On return from sleep or hibernate, the lights remain off for between 30 seconds to 5 minutes. They always come back on though

I think there's something wrong with the latest SSE driver. I never had these (device not connected) issues in the 1.5 years of the default driver, so I went back to the default driver from the installation disc. Bam, everything smooth.

MSI has released a new GT73S with 2 GPU configurations, a 980m SLI and a 980 single GPU, that looks a lot like the GT72S model.

    It also has a 17.3" 120hz screen.

This is the only video currently available showing the GT73, please jump to 00:54 to view it.

With MSI / Asus setting shipping dates for Maxwell GPU laptops in late August, it doesn't sound like Pascal mobile laptop GPU's are coming any time soon.

Oh man that 120Hz screen! Wonder if it's compatible with the original GT72.

GT73 with SLI 1080M might be my next laptop.

got my gt72s dragon. purchased from ibuypower but man whoever did the software test was a little bit of a dunce.

wifi/network crashed and caused bsods. i look in windows logs and sure enough, there were issues logged there before my laptop shipped to me but no one looked.

It would be odd for Nvidia to have already made their Computex presentation days ago, with no mention of Pascal mobile for laptops, announce/release Pascal laptops immediately after the show.

Days of selling the current Maxwell CPU laptops to the dealers and users interested in the latest info, making purchase decisions for product to be delivered in Late August, and then release Pascal?

It would make a lot more sense to release Pascal before the show and use the show to demo and sell Pascal laptops.

    From Monday:
"It looks like Nvidia already presented at Computex 2016, today, and there is no mention of Mobile Pascal for laptops."
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...00m-series-gpus.763032/page-331#post-10267035

If Nvidia releases soon after Computex, they wasted the show talking about the wrong things :)

Hmm, that's a good point. I wonder when they plan on releasing it then. If for some reason they don't release it this year, then thunderbolt 3 might be the alternative (assuming the egpu enclosures come down in price).

You could build a desktop with a 1080/1070, or to save money an RX480, and game on through the drought until Pascal laptops finally ship, we get user reports for each one, figure out which has the least problems - best price/performance, and then purchase wisely.

It doesn't need to be an expensive desktop, just enough to power the Pascal/Polaris desktop GPU :)

I admit, when I saw the price on the Polaris card, the first thing I did was calculate the cost with an eGPU. It's still cheaper to get a Razer Core + RX480 then it is to buy a 980M and it's probably faster too.

The Razer Core is taking a pretty big performance hit off the top of high-end GPU's, so take that into consideration.

You'll get much better preformance with the TX480 native.

You can share your files from the laptop if need be, otherwise keep it as a gaming desktop and keep work on your laptop.

Can't find the link easily right now but someone out there did a benchmark on thunderbolt performance with video cards and saw a 70% - 80% performance output. I'll keep trying to find it. Even at that percentage, that's a lot better than a mobile video card.

That's about right, we have several Razer Core threads here, with people reporting Core performance numbers, check them out.

You are making the wrong comparison, you should be comparing performance of your new GPU native and on Core, and see how much you are losing, not if it's still faster than your laptop.

That $500 for the Core can build a nice support environment for your new GPU, also known as a desktop.

The worst performance for the Core is playing back on your laptop screen, so take that into account too.

Either way, desktop or Core, you need an external screen.

Hmm, so this isn't the original link but based on this, the difference is minimal between a desktop and the Razer blade. He did mention that this party support for non-Razer laptops is very poor right now. http://www.ultrabookreview.com/10761-razer-core-review/

In theory, it should just be a driver update.

That's true, but the reason I'm interested in the core is because the video card is replaceable. With a desktop on the other hand, you're limited to what the motherboard can support. Now, I will say that either way, both the core and the 980M are way out of my budget. I expect that Razer won't remain the exclusive egpu provider for long and that the prices will become more reasonable.

Some of those numbers seem believable, but many do not, at least based on every report seen from real users getting the Core and using it with their Stealth / Blade.

Like I said, read through the forums here to find user reports, here is one:
    • Heroes of the Storm
      • Desktop - 80-100 fps, staying mostly in the 90's.
      • Blade 14 - 60-90 fps, staying mostly in the upper-70's.
      • Stealth - 50-70fps, staying mostly in the mid-60's.
    • Overwatch
      • Desktop - 80-90 fps, staying mostly in the upper-80's.
      • Blade 14 - 70-90 fps, staying mostly in the lower-80's
      • Stealth - 60-80 fps, staying mostly in the mid-70's.
    • Doom
      • Desktop - 130-170 fps, staying mostly in the 140's
      • Blade 14 - 90-120 fps, staying mostly in the 100's
      • Stealth - 30-50 fps, staying mostly in the upper-30's

And, there are more, as well as links in posts there to external comparisons. The one you posted is listed and discussed too :)

Driver updates will help, but it's always going to be a loss over the eGPU that doesn't need to be experienced if you use the GPU natively.

I don't understand the fascination of forcing all computer usage through a laptop.

Having more than one functional computer makes more sense to me, especially when a laptop needs service or is busy doing other things, the desktop is there to keep you busy.

Networking computers together to share files is extremely easy, and single computer licensing of apps/software isn't an issue with Windows apps / games, Steam lets you install and run on multiple computers, no problem.

No sense filling up your laptop with games that will only be playable when connected to an eGPU, why lose all that disk space and carry it around with you??

That's true, you could rely on game streaming and/ or resource sharing via a desktop.

Also, I admit, I haven't read any of the threads you mentioned. I've been hoping for an mxm upgrade instead. :D

I'll have to do some catching up!
