The only way would be to find another one of your model, and run BurnRecovery on it to backup it's recovery image, that should work.
The other way is to RMA your laptop to get MSI to reinstall your recovery image and recovery partition.
IDK if MSI are still loading Windows 8/8.1, or if you would get a Windows 10 image. You would need to confirm when setting up the RMA with MSI.

So, I just pulled the trigger on the MSI GT72S Dragon Edition(coming from an ASUS RoG G751 w/ 970M). I just couldn't wait for Pascal Mobile anymore. I'll probably just go for a Graphics Amplifier when the time comes for an upgrade(looking at you, 1080Ti). For the owners, how is the MSI GT72S treating you so far?
-
Mine is exclusively for games and sits on a desk most of the time. It came with a Toshiba 128GB M.2 NVM SSD which I upgraded to a Samsung 256 M.2 NVM. The system has been fast and reliable. No issues so far. -
Nice! Mine is pretty much going to be hooked to my 40-inch TV most of the time. I just wanted to buy a new laptop because my 970M is already showing its age. -
hi I've updated the fw on my gt72 2qe to the latest on msi site, is it possible to downgrade the fw to the previous one, my temps have risen since installing it, if it is possible does any one have it, i forgot to make a note of my previous fw number

This is a great laptop, probably the top of the 17" heap, from a quality standpoint. -

anybody updated to the latest BIOS ver (E1782IMS.114) ? If so did it install without any problems or hitches in the process?

what does the latest bios change?
and xeonorth, all my issues were software related. just took 2-3 days to fix it all but all my complaints to IBP fell on deaf ears. -
Latest bios description says update microcode

Tried to flash the G-Sync Bios over the non-Gsync model. Did not work, PC was booting fine but screen stayed blank, same issue with external monitor connected. Reflashed the correct non-Gsync-Bios using Remote Desktop.
It did fix an issue I had when using the Displayport Connector. The display was not recognized from cold boot when using the NVIDIA card. -

Then you can make a Macrium Restore boot flash drive, copy the image to it - picking the right sized USB Flash drive to fit it - and you can restore from that flash drive to recreate your machine image.
You can also image your other drives, but your gonna need a big flash drive.
You can also restore from USB / external stored images - they don't need to be on the Macrium Restore boot flash drive. -
@hmscott I'll give it a try in the coming days. Any help, i'll let you know.
So with this backup, i can also restore if I upgrade my OS SSD yeah?
Cheers for the link regarding the backup software.
Also, is it possible if i can use an 8gb flash drive as a boot drive for Macrium Restore & Keep the backed up image in an ext HDD or Disc? -

Needs win 8/8.1, old driver, a LG screen. What are your specs?
See this post for more info. -

can anyone please answer my question a few pages back

However, I don't see why they would give us the slots and make them unable to support connecting devices. If I have time to teardown a few systems and move all the drives into my MSI perhaps I'll try powering them up all at once and fill all the slots. -

@hmscott
This is my 128ssd with OS. What next? From backup task should i select the first or second option?
Also, i'm guessing Recovery is where the stock windows recovery is installed.
I have set the compression to high as you had told me to do so a few posts back. Sorry for being such a noob -
Use "image this disk", that creates the image file that you save on the flash drive or external USB disk.
The compression setting is part of the dialogs that you follow to image this disk, so be on the look out - IDK where you set it already - perhaps in the settings there is a pre-setting for those options.
FYI - not for this task, but if you ever want to clone SSD to SSD:
"Clone this disk" lets you clone one drive/partition(s) to another disk, and Macrium Reflect will "resize" to the destination limitations - you go partition by partition to set the destination size - so you can clone to a smaller or larger disk/ssd.
You should be prompted to build the recovery flash drive at some point - I think it asks at start up the first time, but is also an option in a menu, and it might ask again when you create an image file - which you are about to do.panzer06 and AngryPeanut like this. -
Yeah, i was browsing around in the settings and i came across "compression level" I set that to high.
And to specify the options, Which one should I do?
"Image selected disks on this computer" or "Create an image of the partitions required to backup and restore Windows"
You had mentioned about backing up partitions that are in use so i'm guessing i select the "Image selected disks on this computer"
And so i had attached a screenshot so you can let me know which partition should be unchecked before backing up -
@AngryPeanut Received the Solo Backpack. I gotta say, thanks for the suggestion. Well protected the laptop compartment is! I just hope the bag lasts me for a long time, looks like there is strain on the straps when loaded

Do you see the screen image you posted? Look at it carefully.
There are 2 blue "options", one says "Clone this disk", the other says "Image this Disk"
After clicking on "Image this disk", you get a pop up dialog that asks you to select the destination folder as the next choice, pick a folder on another disk - other than the one you are going to image
Use the Advanced option in blue at the bottom left of the dialog that popped up to set the compression; you can leave the rest of the options at defaults.
Then follow the instructions, make your selections.
It will take days to do this if you keep stopping for every choice... just try things, and/or read the documentation. -
Hello guys,
i want to ask you, if is possible the change of GPU in the model GT72S.
If i buy this model with GTX980M shoul be possible to change with GTX980?
I do not know if the ac adapter is enough or the cooling system is same...?
Thank you -
Is it a must to restore the backup because im a bit nervous in case i end up with driver issues/OS issues
The last thing i want to do is RMA because I live 16 hours away by flight from the US so there's no chance of me sending this beauty back to XPC -
You would do the restore test against another M.2/2.5" drive
This is easiest to do when you are about to upgrade, the "test" restore is against the new storage device, and you keep the originals on the shelf for use later if you RMA, or when you want to sell the laptop - you get more $ selling the upgraded components independent from the laptop.
The Macrium restore software lets you delete any destination partitions and overwrite the partition layout from the backup image.
You need to create the Macrium "Rescue" flash drive *NOW* so you have it to do the restore if you have a SSD failure - they happen within the first month or so. Be Prepared.

You would test the restore with the original storage out of the laptop, to preserve it - you would replace it back in the laptop after the restore test.

The other kind is where the internal storage gets corrupted and a chkdsk scheduled at boot doesn't work...
Create a Windows 8.1 (or 7/10) installer flash drive, and boot on that to use the Windows Repair function.
Good to have around for boot problems - bad driver install - and system files corruption that isn't disk corruption related.

the one under firmware on msi site, not the vbios
-
Hmm, i dont think you can downgrade from that. Best bet is to contact MSI Support first -
Yes you can downgrade the EC firmware. Some here should be able to help. If not, svet on the MSI forums knows how.

No experience? -
You will be able to upgrade to some form of the new Pascal 1080/1070 mobile GPU's after they come out. You will need to be patient while the new GPU's ship in new laptops first.
The Pascal MXM GPU upgrade kits will likely come out 3-6 months or more after the initial shipments of the new GPU's in new laptops.
If you are in a hurry, sell your current laptop and get a new one with the new GPU's. That's the quickest route to running the new Pascal laptop GPU.Last edited: Jun 13, 2016
