What did you do to have the fan curve like that? Mine is different in Advanced.

Interesting, maybe we have different versions of DC.

I have the exact Same issue. The First and the Second bar are above each other. I send my Book to Service cause of this an other Little issue.
I can Tell you what it may be, when i have Mine back -
I have this issue few times. It is only appear, when i Use the Turbo Mode on dc and Switch to eco. In the tab OC on BIOS the Settings are reset to 0. you may load default Settings in BIOS.

I've had something like that. I press the power button, it lights up. After a second or two the light goes off. Another second it lights up and boots normally. That's happened several times.Shehary likes this.

Well today I called it quits with my computer. I had been having the problem with nahimic and synaptic crashing. MSI had me update bios and EC. They then told me to restore the computer. After restore it would not boot to windows. Just endless restarting with the MSI logo. So I'm returning it and going back to the walled apple garden prison. Thanks for the help everyone.

You probably just got a bad unit, as restoring back to out of the box configuration should get you stable, at least until Windows Updates gets a hold of it
Before giving up, considering this is a new foray into another world for you, maybe give the model another chance with a new unit from the same reseller or another one before giving up?
We have all had our share of DOA hardware, and stuff that fails soon after unboxing, it's called infant mortality, and can be due to lots of factors, not least being shaken and jolted thousands of miles of shocking travel
Apple isn't going anywhere (pun intended), so you don't have to rush back, they will be fine without you.
If you do decide to give it another try, please do come back and let us help you through any issues you might come up with.

Hello all
First off, thank you to everyone who has posted info/findings/reviews in this thread! - it was all very helpful in making my decision to pick up a GT73VR 6RE (017)
I received it yesterday and everyone is spot-on about how great this machine/series is.
Except for one thing, there's an almost metallic/medium-high frequency noise emitting from inside that I believe isn't the fans as I can hear both at the same time.
It has been present from the moment I first booted up the computer and has remained thus far, it's more audible to my left ear than my right.
At first I thought it might be normal as it would reduce in pitch when I select eco-mode in dragon center but when I select comfort-mode it returns to an uncomfortable frequency.
In eco-mode the cpu clock reads 1.29ish/ghz & 0.76ish/vcore while in comfort-mode the readings are 3.17ish/ghz & 1.16ish/vcore
Has anyone else experienced any similar noise?
I apologize if what i'm describing is normal operation as the last computer I had was a 2004-Toshiba laptop which was mainly used for web surfing and was for the most part very quiet.
I've performed the windows 10 anniversary update & installed the newest version of Intel XTU, i'm still on the 369.09 nvidia drivers & I've also left fan speed to auto-mode in dragon center.
Other than that I haven't adjusted any other settings.
I haven't played any games on it yet, i'm waiting for doom to finish downloading so I can test if the noise will go yet-higher.
There is also a GT72VR with a 1060 I have access to and it doesn't produce the noise my laptop does whatsoever
I'm thinking it's cpu related but i'm worried it could be coil whine from the gpu.
Hopefully i'm just overreacting as I really like this laptop and would hate to have to return it as I would have to send it back to amazon and wait longer for a new unit to compare.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!Last edited: Dec 8, 2016 -
As you said the noise was present when you first booted the laptop, means out of the box, suggesting to ask re-seller to replace the unit.
I'm using using this laptop for almost 2 months, it's totally quite in idle mode and only fan noise while gaming, no other noise or sound ever coming from laptop.
you said noise is more audible to left ear then either it's CPU related because CPU is on left side and GPU on right side OR may be it's coming form one of the speaker or woofer, woofer is also on left side.
but again, it's the problem out of the box and no one here ever said anything about noise problem out of the box (except pitching sound coming from fans), so don't try to look under the hood and just send it back to re-seller.
if you want to try something, try updating the BIOS and EC firmware other then that it's not a software issue more like hardware issue. -
Go to Control Panel, Programs & Features, look for Dragon Center, you can see the installed version next to it.
-
I found this video thanks to you mentioning about a pitching sound coming from the fans...
...and it is just about exactly the same noise I am experiencing.
Unfortunately a return/repair is in order as it is unbearable to listen to in a quiet environment.
The upside is that i'm only about an hour away from the southern california msi service center so it might be quicker if i initiate a warranty repair with them rather than risk receiving another similar unit from amazon.
Thanks for your help Shehary! -

My GT73 VRE 017 comes in a week or two, my bro already got it and I told him to test it out before he sends it to me (stationed overseas), this is going to replace a GT72 w/ 970M xD! Can't wait! Debating on whether to get an additional nvme for raid. I do have a 250GB SSD M2 at hand and a 960GB SSD for the rest of storage/games.
-
Sorry to hear that. Good luck with your macbook.tonuzzi, mp_ts101, DukeCLR and 1 other person like this.

Lol, I should have known that.
I have 1.2.1610.2701 -
I second everything @Shehary said. This noise is a rare occurrence in this machine so it's a defect, people here have sent theirs in to have a repair done and it took 5 weeks, during that time nobody at the MSI repair center could tell him about the progress. This wasn't a cheap laptop and you shouldn't have to deal with the hassle but if you do please let us know how your experience went.
Welcome to the forums.

When I bought min I added a higher capacity SSD, the same drive went on sale for black Friday and almost got one to put in RAID and even though it was $79.00 I just couldn't pull the trigger as it's already a fast machine, I wasn't convinced I would notice a difference. I load multiplayer games on the SSD and single player ones on the HDD, I just want my maps to load. If I could go back I would have splurge on a 512 ssd instead.
Good luck with your new machine. -
Depot repairs take weeks. Amazon's best feature is their return policy. They will ship you a replacement before you even send the old one back so if you have prime you could have a replacement in as soon as 2 business days.
You're much better off doing an exchange IMO.Atma, hmscott, mp_ts101 and 1 other person like this. -

Hm, that's the 1070 though, and it doesn't show the GPU power draw.
Also, can you try using Imgur? NBR's attachment system is kinda wack right now.
Thanks! -
I went ahead and asked for a replacement from amazon, thankfully it went through with an estimated delivery date by next Tuesday!
Thanks for the input as I would've most likely went with the service repair otherwise.
I had it in mind that amazon would've wanted to receive the unit I had before sending me a new one.
...and at least now I have the weekend to gather some benchmarks to see how this units cpu and gpu will compare to the new one.Atma, hmscott, DukeCLR and 1 other person like this. -
Try to run 4K or higher?

Excellent, thanks for the screenshot! I see a max power draw of 180w and this seems in line with the founders edition's 180w cap.

Are you on stock thermal paste and using auto fans? -
yes stock thermal paste and auto fans.
also, couple of page back, you asked if ram latency change from 17 to 15, what will happen? Well yesterday I did change the latency from 17 to 15 in Bios and laptop boot normal and didn't notice anything.....
-
Better ram performance, though this is a very minor thing.
Check if you can actually sustain the CL change from 17 to 15 using Memtest86. -
Just a small advice regarding chaning notebook latency and overclocking:
Make sure windows is not updating anything when you do so. I had the rather unpleasant experience yesterday that I was testing different overclocks and voltage changes, which of course I was not sure they were stable. Between clicks, reboots etc, windows started updating, and it got stuck on a boot loop with an unstable overclock, constantly crashing. If that happens, enter BIOS and set everything to default.
Luckily windows ended up reupdating and booting fine after a couple more boot attempts, but it is something to take note on when going to make unstable changes on your machines.
Same applies to memory overclock. I would suggest you familiarize with CMOS reset and opening up your machine before attempting to lower CL ratings, as you might not be able to POST or reach BIOS with an unstable change.custom90gt, ThePerfectStorm, Atma and 5 others like this. -
Just ran firestrike
When set to sport the score was 12347 & when set to turbo the score was 14375 which seems in line with the 13xxx~14xxx (for the 1070) i've seen posted by other users here.
Both were run with the fan setting on auto & nothing else changed/default DC parameters.
Still on the nvidia 369.09 drivers that came pre-installed, i'll be ddu'ing later for the updated drivers and re-run FS to see what I get.
Doom looks fantastic with all settings set to Ultra and runs amazingly so far, I believe I averaged around 70~80fps according to the steam fps display.
Making the jump from console-exclusive gaming is a world of difference
If most games of the same graphical quality hold up the same/near the same i'll be a happy camper!Last edited: Dec 8, 2016Atma, hmscott, Tyresian and 1 other person like this. -
Wow this is the only laptop that's kicking both the 6820HK's and 1080's butts, without having to jump through hoops to get the temps lower.

Just wanted to step in and say be careful ordering one of these from XoticPC via Amazon. I thought I would save myself some time and order this way instead of waiting for a reseller to ship but it appears they are reboxing used or refurbished units and selling them as new via Amazon. The one I opened this afternoon was taped all over, full of packing peanuts and bubble wrap in the box and the lid was nicely dented. I just stopped and put it all back together for a return.
I've used XOTIC PC directly for several Sagers in the past and had only good experiences. This was a disappointment, so if you see a base 017 model show as back in stock suddenly on Amazon via XoticPC, this is probably what you'll get.
-
That's a bummer, good thing you returned it as it is not cool to have bought a new computer and receive that. I believe it is better to deal directly with resellers to avoid this, but I can understand that sometimes it may take more time.
-
As a note: I changed the title of the thread, seeing as there are several owners here already discussing things

I think this is the one I had in my Amazon cart a couple days ago that went out of stock before I pulled the trigger. Sorry this happened!
I ended up ordering from Newegg and it should arrive tomorrow!mp_ts101 likes this. -
I have a little issue with Dragon Center about the CPU fan curve. I tried to use Advanced mode but I can't adjust the fan curve properly because the missing bars are above the first bar. I can't use Auto fans because it keeps the GPU to 63-65C and it gets loud. One week ago auto fans mode was great CPU and GPU stay 73-75C and the fans were very quiet.

I'm just new to this forum, and I'm also a new GT73VR Titan (1070) owner

So you will probably read more from me next weeek (I HOPE

I read a bit of this long thread, found this quite helpful especially for that G-Sync information

You say you've have good experiences ordering directly from Xoticpc in the past? I'm on the verge of ordering one of these laptops from their site, but still have some concerns.
