I've been told by a GT73 owner, that the 120Hz screen does not have good viewing angles, that it has the color shifting you'd expect from a TN panel. Can anyone confirm?
Also, what is the Hardware ID?
-
which is the best screen to go for:
the 4k 17.3 Ultra HD (3840 x 2160), IPS level panel Besides a 5ms response time, the 120 Hz refresh rate
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-nvidia-gtx-1070-gaming-laptop-lt-24p-ms.html
or
17.3 FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS level panel 120Hz Super smooth display
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-intel-i7-6820hk-gaming-laptop-lt-249-ms.html
I've taken this info off the overclockers.co.uk website -
I'd rather run super max settings with high fps at 1080p, than compromised settings at 4K.
-
I hope not. This is the one I'm leaning towards getting with a 1070. I wish there were more reviews. It's a little over my budget already and I don't want buyer's remorse.
-
It's an AVHA panel, much better response time than IPS, but not quite as good technically.
He says it isn't bad at all, just not quite as good as an IPS. Says it kicks the dirt out of TN still. He was exaggerating with his initial impression.
I'd not worry about it. Were I buying one today, I'd still take the 120Hz 1080p, over the 4K option. -
Thanks Kevin. Think then I'll go with this one

Great, was only waiting to have this feedback to jump the gun.
Now just have to wait for some retailer to have ot here in Portugal... It will take a while most likely. -
does the 4K panel have a IPS panel?
and does it have 100%NTSC and 100%AdobeRGB -
only auo 4k b173zan01.0 will give you that spec
no panel is 100% color coverage, company puts 99% to avoid legal issues -
Can anyone comment on how recent MSI 4k laptops have handled upscaling 1080p? Is there any noticeable blurriness, or is it pretty much seamless?
-
All 4k panels I have seen do not scale 1:1 and are blurry at 1080p. Dont opt for a 4k panel if you mainly plan to use 1080p.

It's a pity they don't speak proper English. Not very reassuring when you are about to spend over 2000 pounds.praetorianx and hmscott like this.

Until the underlying technology changes, running an LCD below its native resolution will always result in blurriness and lower IQ.
-
To be honest, the post is not very different than some posts over the forums
But yeah, since MSI is Taiwanese they probably wrote that with too much excitement before proofreading it with a native english speaker.hmscott likes this. -
It's pretty disappointing that they can't implement the extremely basic method of simply pixel-doubling 1080p to scale it to 4k. There should be no real technical obstacle to a 4k screen perfectly rendering 1080p content.

Sure, 100% fan mode cools best when benchmarking, but I wouldn't game or do daily work loads with "Cooler Boost" = "Max Fan" = 100% fan speed
"But when we click the “Cooler Boost” key on right side of the GT series notebook, or we enable “Cooler Boost” function form Dragon Center UI, both fan will boost up from 3400rpm to 4900rpm, that makes the CPU temperature drop to 72 degree C which was 12 degree C less than AUTO mode, the GPU temperature drop to 76 degree C, which was 9 degree C drop.
So in that particular example, temp for CPU was 84c and GPU was 85c, which aren't really high enough to need "Cooler Boost" or "Maximum Fan Noise Decibels".
But, it's a nice drop to look forward to when the CPU / GPU are bumping into the 90c range.
-
Hey can anyone tell me if the Msi gt62vr with a 1070 has high temps on the gpu? What are full load temps for the cpu and gpu after an hour or two?

So does this has 120hz and G-Sync both?
This maybe differ as country? I am in S.Korea and korea msi branch says GT73VR does not have neither. (120, gsync)
So they import cheap version display.
But other country's situation is different? Are there country or site that has GT73VR with both 120hz and gsync? -
According to GenTech PC, yes it has both.
-

The version avaiable to GenTech PC in USA has both. I've asked to the MSI rep in Portugal and for this first wave we don't get it here, maybe later. Damn it... Clevo it is!

The sub-model numbers are applicable to its respective regions that's why you couldn't locate them in your country.
Also, some regions may have better specs than the other depending on PM (Product Manager) decisions. -
Do you know when GenTech will have these back in stock? I see they are for pre-order now.

Is it just me or is the shot of the SLI version missing the GPUs entirely...looks like there is nothing there below the heatsinks.Last edited: Aug 25, 2016Atma likes this.

We still have some GT73VR Titan Pro-003 in stock and the rest will be here next week.Atma likes this.

That's cooler boost technology for you. It is incredibly cool because one of the GPU is fictional.
But yeah, it seems the shot is missing the actual GPU.hmscott, James D, Atma and 1 other person like this. -
If Asus and Alienware had s-x their child would look like this GT73. Not my favorite.
Nah, it's just VR means that one GPU is virtual while second is real. -
Thanks. What is the battery life on the integrated graphics? I for one would like to be able to do more than gaming if on the off chance I need to take this somewhere, write up some documents, browse the web, and what not on the intel chip. How long would the battery life in this kind of normal use with dGPU turned off?
-
Actually what I want is get gaming laptop and moving around and use it anywhere I want, cafe, department store, or even outdoors, etc that has no power plug.
So are there external battery pack that can support these sort of gaming laptop's power? 19.5V, 16.9A (or more A) maybe? At least 6~8 hours more can take me anywhere quiet place. -
So, about this model (GT73VR), GenTechPC sells 120hz and Gsync, but Xoticpc sells 120hz but not Gsync?
If this is true, GenTechPC's GT73VR is currently most cheap 120hz+Gsync laptop in market?
And how is 120hz+Gsync actual usage feeling when gaming or working? -
This
Reading from the first post: maybe it's not yet implemented for now, but it's capable of having it in the future.
Should ask Xotic about it. I cannot assume that all 120Hz is able to have G-Sync. Some retailers might not have it.
-
Where did you guys buy the laptop? I don't know where to buy a GT73VR-017.

So I finally got my hands on one of these beasts. 1080p screen 120hz with an nvidia 1080. Simple question as I never owned one of these "desktop class notebook gpu" laptops before.
Basically before I would go to the M series in nvidia's driver site to download new drivers. Given this is a desktop class card does that mean I should download the desktop 1080 drivers or will there be a separate laptop 1080 driver set releasing later? -
Haven't bought it personally, but Gentech, Xotic PC and HIDevolution sells this unit and are among the more reputable sellers of MSI laptops, I feel based on my experience reading this forum. I have ordered from Gentech personally in the past for my MSI laptop and they seemed more hands on and personable (I exchanged multiple e-mails with one person during the whole process) when compared with Xotic PC - my experience only.
-
Good question
The 980 desktop mobile driver was under the Notebook section.
Try the notebook section first, put in the Windows version, etc, and see what comes up.
Download, safe mode ddu uninstall what you have, then install after rebooting into normal mode, and run some benchmarks - take notes.
Then download the desktop version, safe mode ddu uninstall, install after rebooting into normal mode, and run the same benchmarks, and compare to see if there is any difference.
Some in the past have said that they had better results with the desktop drivers, IDK how it shakes out now
Please come back and let us know how they compare!Atma likes this. -
Please let is know what you think when you have time. How's the fan noise? How's the light bleed? I've just about made up my mind this is the one I want. Where did you get it and how long did it take?
-
They are same actually
If the driver version is same, then you are downloading exact same file. They are in separate section because sometimes newest version doesn't come certified to work with mobile Geforce.
-
You win the prize, good job

Thanks for the info guys would love to do some tests but sadly looks like my gpu died.
Been playing rocket league, doom, just cause, and dues ex all day. Temps for the gpu never exceeded past 83c and the cpu capped out at 80 so it wasn't overheating. Started GTA V and 5 minutes into the prologue poof purple checkerboard. Forced a restart and the device refused to boot. Did a system restore via the built in msi backup (stock drivers and all) and it still refused to boot. Basically after the msi logo I get some lined artifacts and then the screen goes black. It goes into safe mode so it must be the nvidia gpu since it stops nvidia drivers from running.
Guess I just got a lemon when it comes to the 1080. Gonna contact the reseller I bought it from on Monday and ask for a replacement. Hopefully it will go through without s hitch I really loved this laptop the performance and display were amazing.

QC is the only reason I haven't jumped on MSI bandwagon yet. And my local retailer tells me the same thing -90% of their service claims are MSI. Damn it. I really dig this new chassis and features for the price.hmscott likes this.

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear that. Please let us know how the return process goes and and additional information on the failure. Sounds like waiting to pull the trigger for a MSI laptop may be a good idea.
Before it failed what were your general impressions of the screen and gaming performance.hmscott likes this. -
Well that's sad news. Sorry you have to go through the whole return process. I hope it's not something that's going to be common with this model.hmscott likes this.

I'm hoping to go look at a gt73vr with the 1080 tomorrow so hope its not everyone.
mobiousblack - hope it gets fixed.
Harks10, like to hear some feedback on yours when you get it. -
Thanks for the kind words guys don't let my experience deter you from this laptop I've owned many msi laptops before this one and they were fine. Guess I was just unlucky with this one.
The gsync 120hz screen was amazing, definitely made me less homesick when gaming on my trip as I have a 100hz ultra wide and 165hz 1440p display back home. Colors were great and response time was awesome.
As for performance, the 1080 chewed up anything I threw at it. Deus Ex max settings with only AA turned off and fps was above the 65 range. Rocket league isn't a performance hog so constant 120fps. Doom ran at a constant 120fps with all settings on max and Vulcan turned on (didn't bother testing with Vulcan off).
And what little bit I got to play of gta before my card died (lol) it ran very well (didn't have an fps counter turned on).
I'm hoping that my reseller will just send me a replacement given it died day one and I'm a long time customer with them. Well see how it goes tomorrow.Last edited: Aug 28, 2016DukeCLR, chris_101, hmscott and 1 other person like this.
