Ok I'm straying to think msi might be better for me .. what about fan noise

-
Since msi have bigger heatsink, the fan will spin at lower noise to have the same cooling effect.
Keep in mind also that msi fan will have lower pitch noise compared to alienware.
You also have the option to toggle the full fan speed on msi if you overclock like crazy, I believe this is louder than the alienware but I can't confirm. -
Which would you pick

whichever one is cheapest
you can also haggle with dell -
The msi is 100 less but dell has 512ssd

they seem to be very close to each other
I'd rather take the aw17 and have a better resale value later in the day that you sell it -
That's !! That's what I'll do !
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
The AW whole tripod heatsink fiasco at release for all the AW's will likely be brought up by the buyer at sale time, which could mean you will need to knock a few hundred off to sell it.
What I am saying is I wouldn't count on an advantage in value long term of the AW over the MSI. I think both will be close enough that it doesn't matter, or the AW could be at a marked disadvantage. -
Hmmm that's a good point as well ..

I believe by now at this point msi has become a contender along with Alienware in terms of name prestige, so the point of resell has become void as they will be worth around the same. Then if you consider the fact of the faulty Alienware cooling system it becomes a much harder choice to recommend the Alienware to anyone.

It also needs to be made widelyy known, that all of the 1440p screens have this issue:
I personally wouldn't be able to stand looking at that for more than 5 minutes. -
Yikes !!! Is the gt73vr screen TN or ips I saw some one posted on amazon it's really a TN
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkhmscott likes this. -
GT73 screen is not the 1440p TN, it's a chimei 1080p TNhmscott likes this.
-
It's TN, but might literally be the best TN panel I've ever seen, in a laptop.
The viewing angles are very stable, the colors are vibrant. I've had them side by side, and it's obviously superior to the IPS in my previous GT72.
I was worried about going back to a TN panel, but this one has far exceeded by expectations.kennyman, nightingale and hmscott like this. -
The screen on this laptop is better than my external 24" monitor. I love it!
-
Another plus with the MSI is that you won't have to repaste it to get good temps. The Alienware basically requires user modifications to reach its full potential.
you can OC the GT73VR out of the box to 4.0 and temps barely break 70. -
That's great !! Should one nervous about warranty?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
The warranty coverage is good. You get a 2 year warranty plus 1 year of accidental damage coverage included. The downside is that you have to send your laptop to the repair center for work.
Alienware only comes with 1 year warranty but you have the option to purchase up to 4 years. And AW will come to your house to service your machine.
It's really a trade off I think. Personally, I think the initial quality of the MSI is better than AW but the long term it's hard to say at this point.hmscott likes this. -
I'm definitely impress with the specs of this machine. Specially the cooling and the results from that 1080p 120Hz/5ms ChinMei TN panel.
2 questions:
1-It is possible to mod and place two 2.5" 9.5mm Hard Drives? I can see there is space that it's meant for another GPU MXM card, thinking of a workaround to mod another 2.5" drive...
2-Did somebody tried to use a Thunderbolt to USB adaptor or hub, to plug a wired mouse on the back? And.. does it work properly? Meaning no noticeable input mouse lag? -
I'm considering between one of these with a 1070 vs. one with a 1080. Money isn't really a big issue. I'm more interested in the heat and noise difference. Is the 1080 version a lot louder and produce much more heat?
-
So I submitted a support ticket asking about the clicking sound from the fan in sport and turbo modes. I said it doesn't make the sound in confort or eco and they responded almost immediately saying that is an indication of an defective fan and issued me an RMA.
I think it is silly to pay to ship a computer to them for a simple fan replacement when a new fan will cost much less than shipping.
Will MSI ever ship parts out?
And if not, does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement?kennyman, spoonjaffa and hmscott like this. -

Regarding the 1st question, the answer is no because it doesn't have any extra SATA connector.
Regarding the 2nd question, let's wait for others who had experience on this to answer you.

Have you checked with them directly on this? Since MSI is the manufacturer therefore the best place to obtain parts is from them.spoonjaffa and hmscott like this. -
3 options at this time;
Send for RMA
Ask for fan replacement from MSI (they must have it)
Wait for fan spare which not available anywhere as we speak
GPU Fan picture here and model is PABD19735BM and must be N369
CPU Fan and Model is PABD19735BM and must be N370

I removed my fan to clean it the other day so if you happen to get a fan then it's an easy fix and would seem to be much cheaper then sending it in.
-
You could try to plug the other HDD in some way to test it.
-
The other HDD appears to have a soldered SATA connection, but I'll investigate.
However, I have a GT72 and a few other notebooks around my place...I could certainly try to borrow a cable from elsewhere.
Worst case scenario, you can get an adapter for the M.2 SATA slot to convert it to a full 2.5" SATA connector if you really want another HDD.hmscott, Nomad, DukeCLR and 1 other person like this. -
Alright, I'm going to say I think this is possible. I ripped open a GT72 and pulled out the HDD cable. It fits perfectly into the 'HDD2' connector right next to the empty expansion bay. Unfortunately, the cable is too short to actually get a HDD to plug in without stressing the cable more than I would like to. Picture attached below. I'll see if I can find a longer cable from another machine at work and try it again.
I just tried this with a cheap USB-C to USB-A adapter I found in my desk. It works great. I cannot perceive any difference in latency on my G700s (in wired mode)

Yes I got the number to their parts department and they said that they would ship me a new fan from their warehouse overseas once they had one available. Fingers crossed that they can find one!

Can someone tell me if the default msi gt73vr titan pro-202 comes with a single 512gb nvme card, or two 256s? I keep seeing conflicting answers from people. I'm just talking about what comes stock.

Excellent!
512GB PCIe NVMe (512GB X1). -
pulled off CPU heat sink for re-paste and found 3 scratches visible and can easily feel them
-
I will update tomorrow what I did with CPU heat sink but the question is should I ask MSI for replacement ?
I am open to suggestions to buy thermal pads, applied thermal pads are worse even if apply bubble gum will be better quality and will do better job......
Choices are
Phobya OR Fujipoly OR Thermal Grizzly OR Gelid
what should be the thermal conductivity 7W/mk or 11W/mk or above.....?
I applied MX4 on both CPU / GPU and temp drop only 2 to 3 degree, have ICD but will not use it for now and going for Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, just need confirmation that it's non metallic right....? like MX4 easy to apply easy to clean no scratches.....
@Mobius 1 Something for you, you wana map the Thermal Pads, here for GPU, size of all pieces of thermal pads are 1mm
-
That's bad, can you set up a parts only RMA for the heatsink?
The arctic thermal pads on amazon is very affordable and has great flexibility to squish onto the heatsink.DukeCLR likes this. -
Note sure but I did lapping the heatsink and scratches were not deep so with little effort they are gone, can't take the risk to put it back with scratches it may scratch the dye too.
I ordered Thermal Grizzly and Phobya, yes Arctic Thermal Pads are cheaper but I bad experience with them
BTW, did you notice something in GPU snapshot, there is something missing in it, when you map the thermal pad, you will find out
I love this laptop but I will not buy again from MSI, with this much bad QC, visible scratches on heatsink and still they used it.Last edited: Dec 19, 2016 -
Is is the two little components on the edge of card not being covered by the thermal pad?
-
Hi everybody! Longtime lurker, but I just got my 'new' gt73vr today and checked the SMART attributes on the hard disk and ssd, they both show high power on count (400+) and had about 8-9 hours of power on time already. Did I get a MSI 'refurb' sold as new?
SSD stats show approx 900+ GB of host reads and 200+ GB of host writes.DukeCLR likes this. -

How was the packaging? was it in a retail box, brand new and from MSI directly? These are the pics my bro sent me before he tested it then shipped it to me (i live overseas).Attached Files:

Yea it shipped in the brown MSI box with the MSI branded/logo'd tape. The inner box/retail box had the same black circle sticker on it. This is actually my second one. My first one came the same way from a 3rd party retailer on Amazon that is listed as an official MSI partner on MSI's website. Came the same way but inside an extra box like yours, MSI brown box with colored product box on the inside. Except that one had a puncture hole in the MSI brown box that went into the accessory box. Noticed that the warranty sticker was already cut on that one so I had to return it, as it also had about 7 unaccounted hours and 70 power on count. I am curious, if yours is still relatively new, can you check the smart attributes on your SSD and HDD?
-
Third replacement arrived today.
Fingers crossed for a good one.
Its funny you guys mention the warranty sticker. On arrival of the first 2 (faulty) machines the warranty sticker had been broken.
How do I tell if this thing has been powered up/used before? -
One way is install the NVMe SSD tool for boot drive, run it, check it's smart detail, you will find out how many hours the drive has been used, read and write data detail, possible failed shutdown counts, will tell you that your laptop has been used before or not.DukeCLR likes this.
-
HWmonitor will give this info I believe. It should give you smart data and battery wear level. There's bound to be some usage from factory testing but not much.
-
Hmm, wonder if it actually needs a heatsink?
-
At first, I thought so too but later I checked and the chips with missing pads are identical same as the small chip at very bottom which has full length pad, may be pads are too small to apply or too tiny and they lost it or MSI thought why bother and effort, we are not paying the 3 grand for this laptop, we are just selling it......

quite concerning, I really wonder what components are those
