initial models have Samsung drives but later I see Toshiba drives too, as brand is not listed
I also got Toshiba and swapped it with Samsung SM950,
I will suggest to buy base model (do all the upgrades by yourself), either you will get Samsung or Toshiba, if you want faster drive (for gaming and software) buy a new one you have option to add additional PCIe drive, that's what I did, OS on 128GB samsung, games on intel 512GB, software on m.2 sata and rest of the junk on HDD.....![]()

That is the model I have... I will check for you when I get a chance...at work now.

anyone knows what USB Boost & Storage Boost do if enabled in DGC or these options just show off.....?

I think all they did was cause problems with some models, I have never used them, hmscott likes this.
-
supposedly they caused both the USB controller and HDD to be constantly on use, at 100% performance so when they were needed, they were "faster". The problem ended up causing worse performance as it kept both controllers busy and consuming CPU cycles for almost no benefit.
Recomended: don't use it for the time being.custom90gt, Dannemand, Atma and 1 other person like this. -

Yeah, I would maybe turn them off as well. Unless you maybe could get some benefit out of that feature, which might be pretty few people, I would just turn it off so it doesn't cause any potential issues. -
I agree. I purchased the base model. Now probably waiting for the Samsung 960 Pro to be available.
-
Earlier those options came enabled by default, and it took a time to figure out where the performance glitches were coming from - lag in games and video playback, it turns out those performance boosters end up slowing things down preparing to do the boost - during "idle" times.
You can certainly play with them, but the "fix" for performance glitches after finding these XBoost settings was to turn them "off".
As time goes on it might be worth turning them on 1 at a time and test to see if they behave and actually help rather than hurt overall performance.

Did you add your own thermal pad on the SSD heat sink for your M.2 SATA drive? If so, what thickness did you use? I have a SATA drive I want to use but the heat sink only has pad for where the two (2) NVMe drives go.
-
Yep yep and 6 to 8 core intel cpus for the mainstream, AMD Ryzen. Its the main reason I tried not to spend too much on my purchase. Volta + more cpu cores.
Hopefully it works out lolDukeCLR likes this. -
Yay! Happy days! When I sent my laptop to MSI to have my bezel fixed (which wasn't), they told me they also updated the bios and EC firmware. I was looking today and noticed that wasn't true either. I updated my bios and EC firmware and it broke my raid setup. I had to set it up again and reinstalling windows now.

Very interesting, I have the vr73 titan pro with the gtx 1080 and with the nvidia GFE optimized settings I cant get over 88FPS avg with a 376.33 driver. DX 11 @150% res scale and all on ultra. I do have the 1080p screen 120Hz but I would love to know what others score in BF1 with GFE optimized settings and std notebook settings.
Origin in game is off and and so is vsync, Gsync is off as well.
Fire Strike score is 15225 w/o any OC whatsoever. I love high fps, thus the screen choice but I really thought the device would easily do 120hz on.
New here anyways, so if I need to post some more info, lemme know. If anyone amongst you scores 1ooHz and more on GFE optimized settings pls PM me.
CheersDukeCLR likes this. -
Well that wasn't too bad. When I set up my raid the last time and restored from the MSI restore usb I made, after windows did all it's updates I made another restore usb. That one was the normal windows restore so this time I didn't have to go through the anniversary update and I still had all the MSI drivers and apps. Last time I'll be updating bios though ... unless it gives me 3000 more points in Firestrike.
-
I will have to check my settings but I dialed my settings down at some point, I read somewhere about "competitive" settings and I just had to try them out and as it turn out I don't mind sacrificing eye candy for a solid 120 FPS, I am fairly sure that I was getting close to 120 with everything maxed out though so in a few day when I get back on my mobile beast I'll try to dig up those graphs and see, some are posted earlier in the thread. The resolution at 150% is the only thing that jumps out at me, as being different. Your 1080 should be blowing mine out of the water.Atma likes this.

Well, I have used the Nvidia Gforce Experience optimized settings for my device and the funny part is, that I have 80% GPU load at 1.8Ghz clock and stuck at some 88hz.
here is the log from MSI AB
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B700gr2H8SMvN1FVT3Z1Q3FxajQ/view?usp=sharing
Whats weird is the almost 100% CPU load which I had on my desktop 2600K only some 60% max. Maybe the CPU is the bottleneck,. Again, anyone who can test this and record a log with BF1, that be great. Thanks

Has anyone else noticed drop in Battlefield 1 performance after latest update??
Mine used to run at 120fps 98% of the time now it drops and gets stuttery. -
I stopped using GFE and uninstalled it, I don't use the recording function and I like to control my own hardware settings, I don't miss it . I now do manual driver installs and I unselect GFE and the 3D drivers, I also check the box that reads "clean installation". I would be sure that you are in the turbo mode in DGC as well. I haven't trie BF1 at full settings in awhile but I have a week in the crash pad coming up so I'll try to do a test.

watch out. your raid setup can gets corrupted as with mine

i got my MSI GT73VR 6RE yesterday with a gtx 1070 and a 1080p 120hz screen in denmark and as previous stated it has G-sycn
Thank you all for the information in this thread it been alot of help.
pretty much removed all the ****ty stuff GFE, dragon center and such
and installed the right OC tools and monitor programs and without OC stock nothing i did 13000 in fire strike but with a stable OC at 4.1gz and GPU at +250/600 i did a 15708 score max temp CPU was 65degrees and GPU was 75 degrees so i am more than happy with this awsome machine
i still have to try one of those ICC files for the screen to get a better wiev og it but there will be time
i dont know how to upload pictures yet sorry -

Impressive results! You basically bridged a price gap of 1200CAD with some OCing. These are exactly the values I get on stock settings with the gtx1080 version.
Well done and you should be happy.

I'd agree, you got some good results and temps look good too. Just curious, what programs are you using for OC'ing?hmscott likes this. -

Hey all,
Finally bought myself one these bad boys with a 6820HK CPU and 1080 GPU.
Never saw one in person until I received mine. Beautiful machine and very well built. Pictures and videos don't do it justice.
Love the notebook and really want to keep it but I have some concerns and questions for you guys:
- I am watching a blu-ray on it at the moment using PowerDVD 16 and the CPU is 57°C and the CPU fan is running at 2400rpm average. Ambient temp is around 22°C. Are these temps and fan speed normal for a simple blu-ray playback?
- The CPU fan on the left side of the notebook (as you look at the screen) makes an annoying whine when the fan goes above 2000rpm. It sounds like a distant grasshopper chirping in the background as I watch a blu-ray movie. Is this a common problem? I have a few days left in which I can send it back to retailer for a replacement but if it is a common problem I would prefer to send it off to MSI to get repaired.
- It takes the notebook around 1 full minute to power down. Is this normal? The screen switches off immediately but the keyboard lights, light indicators etc don't turn off for another full minute. Is there a way to improve this?
DukeCLR likes this. -
57°C @ 22°C ambient not normal, I watch movies too and CPU temp never cross 50°C @ 25°C ambient
Try watch the movie on VLC player and see if there is a difference in temperature.....
pitching noise @ 2000+ RPM from CPU Fan is a factory problem (Many users have this problem), you can sent it for RMA and MSI will replace the CPU fan.
I have same laptop and shutdown time is 10 to 15 sec max where mostly I don't bother to close all the running programs and let the windows take care of them.Last edited: Dec 29, 2016DukeCLR likes this. -
I used MSI afterburner for GPU and intel extreme tuning utility for CPU I will eventually play with the bios settings for the CPU as I hate to rely on programs that have to start up during boot for the OC to take placeDukeCLR likes this.

I have tried watching the blu-ray on vlc as suggested and I am getting the same temperature and fan readings, 57°C @ 22°C ambient and 2400rpm average fan speed. I even raised the notebook off the table I am using to ensure good airflow below notebook but no good. A notebook this powerful shouldn't be so taxed by a blu-ray playback should it?
My CPU core clock is showing as 3.87GHz. I have not overclocked the notebook in any way since i received it as I am using it at stock settings out of the box. So why is the CPU core clock running at 3.87GHz even when I have no programs running?
I just want to know is all this unusual behaviour for a notebook with 6820HK, 1080 GPU, 512GB SSD, 32GB RAM and ambient temp of 22°C. It is an expensive notebook and therefore I want to make sure the one I receive is working properly. -

@firies2000 ies2000
Have you set up dragon center? You could be stuck in some kind of turbo mode which would hold your CPU steady, I'm not sure what to expect watching a movie but those temps seem high. As said before the whine from the fan is a know defect in some models, I think you could get MSI to send you one if you are comfortable replacing it yourself. If you send it in be prepared to pay for shipping and be without your laptop for weeks. The only time I get long shutdowns is when Windows 10 is updating, I guess be sure it's finished doing all of the updates, I think it take a couple of days and does them in stages if your don't force them. I would suggest trying to do other things on the machine and see how it works, run it through the ringer and if it;s not living up to what you expect send it back to the vendor for a new machine or a refund. The RMA process through MSI seems tedious.Last edited: Dec 30, 2016 -
Great comparison, I was so fortunate to get the MSI for 1915$ as a guy sold a completely new unopened box and invoice for the original purges, he had just got it back from RMA and he had gotten the AW in the meantime
as he could not wait.
He got the MSI November 4th at 2835$
it's the gtx 1070 with 2 128m2 ssd in raid and 1tb 7200HD so I just saved 920$

It appears after installing the newest bios E17A1IMS.10A i no longer am able to use headphones in the headphone port.
Nahimic no longer gives the small popup allowing to choose what i just plugged in. Further, no sound comes from the headphones although it appears sound is coming out as the nahimic audio sound bar still moves animatedly as if volume wascoming out.
please help if possible. I have tried reinstalling realtek and nahimic to no avail
Edit: the first port to the left (if viewing the laptop from the left side) works as a headphone plug, although i dont think thats what it was meant for. I would still like to find a fix to the headphone plug if possiblehmscott likes this. -
Good video! Some of the tests are a little subjective but he does show the main problem with the Alienware and that is THERMAL THROTTLING.
Yes, 99c might be within specs but when it forces your pc to slow down and impacts performance then it's an issue. I'm so glad I returned my Alienware and got this MSI. -
This PC ROCKS!! Keyboard is solid, hinge is strong and steady, lighting is even (minus my slightly dim / and * keys on the 10-key, but hey if I realllllllllly wanted I could order another keyboard, eh?) Props to GenTechPC for giving me this shining specimen! It does have CLLU, and on auto fans I got this firestrike. No OC on CPU or GPU.
-
whats the CPU / GPU temps with CLLU...????
-
About 65-70 C for both. I only had the dragon center open for temp monitoring.Atma likes this.

Fire Strike Test @ ambient temperature 23 @ Fans on Auto @ Sport Mode
IC Diamond on CPU max is 61
MX4 on GPU max is 78 (MX4 will be replaced by Grizzly soon...)
What's your ambient temperature....idea...?Last edited: Dec 31, 2016 -
I've not opened the case to have a look at the fans at that RPM. Someone else commented that if you get the squeaking noise then you can adjust the fans rpm range so it never happens, not ideal but then neither is sending it back and waiting weeks for two fans to be replaced. Some silicon grease should fix the fans, right?
-
If you are going to take it apart to grease it you might as well ask MSI if they will send you another one, the you could just replace it. I'm not sure where the noise is coming form but if its coil whine then grease would not help.Atma likes this.
