It is a "study" sim so there is a pretty steep learning curve. But when the vive works it is pretty amazing.
I fly for a living so have a good frame of reference and having the vive on really gives a sense of presence and motion.

I think we need to see some more temp reviews of the i7-7820hk...the few reviews I have seen of the i7-7700k show it having higher temps than the i7-6700k at similar frequencies. If similar results are seen with the i7-7820hk vs the i7-6820hk then it may be a good time to get a deal on the previous generation (or wait until later in the year to see if there are any gpu upgrades) since it appears the performance benefits are negligible.

Also, what is the general consensus on the necessary amount of RAM for gaming for the next 2-3 years? Is 16gb still considered to be quite enough or is the thought that it may now be worthwhile to move to 32gb?

Are you saying the 7700HQ is OC'able, or just that the base clock is 200mhz higher - so you automatically get a little boost?

Could this increase in temperature be due to higher base and boost clocks, basically a slight OC?

Undervolting is mandatory to get best temps - basically reducing the voltage to the minimum needed for stable operations. The base BIOS settings for CPU voltage are too high for stock CPU operations, so the undervolt makes a big difference for everyone.

Some say undervolting isn't the right direction to go, you should add voltage and go for as high an OC as you can, but those guys have portable air-conditioners as laptop stands, so be aware your experience with ambient temps won't be the same and an undervolt is a better solution for the rest of us :)

I meant the 7700HQ has a higher base clock so you get a bit of a boost for your buck.

The review on notebookcheck of the GT73VR 7RF with the 7820HK recorded a CPU temp of 90C vs a CPU temp of 80C in the GT73VR 6RE with the 6820HK. Now I don't if the difference in temps is also contributed from the 1080 in the 7RF vs the 1070 in the 6RE or maybe the paste job wasn't as good in that particular 7RF that was tested.

Could be variance in manufacturing too, some assembled heatplate TIM mating are better than others.

That's a big jump though, hopefully undervolting can help enough, avoiding repasting.

Could be a numerous of things, it could be kaby lakes memory controller on the die, could be the 6820HK using 16GB vs 32GB of ram on the review.. could be the cooling, but over all trend I've seen on the desktop reviews have been kaby lake hitting higher frequencies and that 5.0GHz has been maybe a 75-80% success again based on silicon lottery so the laptop counterpart may be able to oc further vs. skylake.. another thing is the slightly lower power consumption.

If it's on stock then you're going with a 2700-3600 (boost) vs 2900-3900 (boost).

90C is pretty toasty though, that was at 4.0GHz also. I will be leaving my GT73 6820HK at the factory OC of 4.0GHz and be completely fine with 80C at stress levels. I'm only interested in having a crack at the witcher 3 maxed out (1080p) and modding the hell out of skyrim SE when they finally release the SE script extender. The 1070 should be up to the task. I will be playing with OC levels with the 1070.

Maineiac12 how did you get MSI to send you a new fan to replace your existing CPU fan?

I love my new GT73VR but the CPU fan in mine is making an annoying grasshopper-like chirping sound when the CPU fan goes above 2000rpm.

I can send it back to retailer to have it fixed via MSI but that could take weeks. I would much prefer to have MSI ship me a new fan directly and replace it myself.

Is it difficult to replace the fan; is it just a couple of screws and a wire connection like? Does replacing a fan yourself affect the warranty?

register your laptop on MSI website

go to Support, open ticket regarding your fan issue

MSI will reply and ask you to speak with customer services / parts and accessories department, they will provide the number in reply too

call that number, keep the support ticket reference number handy, once you provide the support ticket reference, they can see your ticket, just ask them to send you the CPU fan, which is left side fan...

    that's all.

It's very easy to replace CPU fan, remove bottom panel (5 screws), remove CPU fan cable, (be careful and be gentle with cable) 2 screws for CPU fan to remove. slightly lift the CPU fan up from side where it's cable connector on the MB and when you have enough room, just pull it towards your own direction, do not pull the CPU fan straight up and watch wireless adopter cables too....

No replacing or upgrading or cleaning, or re pasting will not affect the warranty unless you break any thing.....

I have quite a few hours playing TW3 maxed out with my Gaming OC 4.1/+100/+150. Temps stay below 80. you should do a bit better with your 1080.

I pulloed the fans out to see how cleaning them would be and they are fairly easy to access, back cover off, remove a few screws from a fan cover place the two final ones to remove the fan. The tiny wire seems a bit fragile, I also remember being able to put it on backwards so snap a pic of the plug before you pull for reference.

What? Is this true? I read there is a warranty void sticker on the GT73 from newegg and I have been debating if it's worth voiding or not. My version only comes with a 128gb ssd so I wanted to upgrade it but not at the cost of my warranty.

Would this be the same for MSI Canada? I don't know if that is a stupid question lol

I have a 1070 also. That is good to know about the temps! Can't wait to hook it up to my 55" and game away

can break and still have warranty cover if you don't break anything inside yourself

also easy to remove without breaking if you have a hairdryer and whatnot

warranty sticker is just to remind you "If you break something will not be covered in warranty"

Tested MX4, IC Diamond & Grizzly Thermal Paste on both CPU / GPU, currently Grizzly TIM and temps are very good as compare to stock thermal paste.

Changed the HD heat sink stock thermal pad to Arctic Thermal Pad

Changed GPU stock Thermal pads to Grizzly minus 8 pads

Changed CPU stock Thermal pads to Phobya Thermal pads

You will be good, just don't break anything.....

You can actually open a ticket with MSI to ask them if breaking the seal voids your warranty and they will reply that it does not, so long as you don't break anything when upgrading or cleaning. Doing this even gets their response in writing for extra piece of mind! ;-)

Witcher 3 completely maxed out does require a GTX1080, as even that can sometimes drop to the 50fps range although most of the time hovers on the 60s. With a bit of tweaking in just a setting or two, you can easily shoot FPS up :)

Particularly, disabling hairworks gives a huge boost!

I posted a screenshot of the response from MSI where they said it was OK to break the sticker, I think UK MSI confirmed it but who knows about the Canada, lol.

As far as playing on a 55", if it's 1080p would you get thew same FPS and temps?

Hey everyone. I just ordered the gt73 pro 4K-479 with the kaby lake 7820hk, 4k ips screen, gtx 1080. How is the screen on the 4k version? Doesn't it support gsync? I chose msi again this time cause they seem to have the best cooling and OC capability. Hope I made the right choice. Thanks

@Cerreta28 applied Grizzly LM, here is the post, he never revert back with the snapshot and temps.

My suggestion, do not apply LM on CPU, why not?

Applying LM on CPU may or will drop the temp to 10 degree (more or less)
CPU fan spin according to CPU temp, drop in temp means less fan spinning, may be somehere between 2400RPM to 2800RPM or even below 2400RPM
    ohhh. that's good....too good.....right...less fan noise....temps are good

what about the GPU vram heatsink which also cool down by CPU fan and if CPU fan spinning less means more heat on GPU vram heat sink

with LM defiantly you will get low temp on CPU but may be end up frying GPU vrams.....just a food for thought....

    Svet say

Donation min: 20 euro thru paypal

    System bios can unlock

Video gpu bios cannot unlock due to flash protection

If you have a hardware flasher and can desolder the gpu chip he say it's possible

Is the kaby version widely available yet?

Dammit... For $100 more than what I paid for my GT73 with the 6820HK and a 128gb SSD they just released the new GT73 that comes with the 7820Hk and a 256SSD on newegg. I think I can send it right back to them without extra fees. Is it worth the extra $100 for the 7820HK and 256SSD?

Thanks for the replies about the warranty sticker guys. Sets the mind at ease knowing I can install parts/clean the fans without voiding the warranty.

on the cpu side, theres no difference really 7820hk and 6820hk as we have discussed on this forum and other places, However, as the ssd size is much bigger i think it may be worth the extra 100

agree with @nightingale, CPU around 3% improvement but with cost of higher temperature too.

Most probably MSI will send you Toshiba 256GB SSD with new GT73VR 7RF, you can buy one from ebay somewhere between $100 to $150 and add as an additional drive....more space......

    Here found one @ $100

    I suggest buy this one @ $95

Hey guys , I had the choice between the Alienware 17 with the 7820HK and qhd screen with the gtx 1080, or the msi gt73 4K with the same exact specs but with the 4K screen. Which is currently the better model? I still have time to cancel the gt73 order on Amazon.

Following Is what I read in different threads on NBR

    Alienware 17
CPU uneven core heating problem (if dell haven't fixed it yet it need re pasting and adjust the tension arm so heatsink sit properly also may need to change the thermal pads)
Screen Bleeding Issue (which you can fixed by removing the screen bezel and adjusting the pressure of bezel)
    GTX1080 has some power limits
Disassembly and cleaning the fans take effort and time
    Aftermarket good sale value
    Excellent built quality
No Feature to cool the laptop instantly

    GT73VR
Cooling works great out of the box (may have CPU fan noise issue, MSI will send you a fan which you can replace by yourself)
Screen bleeds but not as bad as Alienware and MSI says TN panel screen does have some light bleeding
No power limits on CPU / GPU
Easy to remove bottom panel and clean the fans (easy re pasting and upgrades)
Aftermarket sale value not as good as compare to Alienware
Somewhere between good and excellent build quality
Cooler Boost Titan Feature to cool the laptop instantly

Comparison can go on and on but as GT73VR owner, I'm happy and no regrets at all.......

I saw a GT73VR-003 with GTX 1080 at a good price in Amazon and decided to buy it. I received it 3 days ago but I was finally able used it today. The first thing I did when I turned it on was a backup recovery image and I updated Windows and drivers. I ran AIDA64 to test the CPU and Heaven Benchmark to test the GPU. The temperatures were OK. CPU at 4.0GHz stayed at 75-78C and GPU +100/+200MHz at 77-80C. I was playing Battlefield 1 for an hour when I suddenly saw strange artifacts on my screen. I ran Firestrike and it was worse. Also, the CPU fan has a very annoying sound at around 2000 rpm.

    Here is a video:

I am still waiting for his results. If the gpu/cpu are cold therefore the heatsinks are cold, therefore all those chips will be cold since the whole heatsink system is cold. Besides using 14/17W pads will cool them no problems, maybe even minus 8 pads. otherwise iunlock and mobius1 and all the LM users (clevo & AW) are making big mistakes. and LHZ team are just uselsss being here? i wished iunlock would get a gt73vr and show us how its done. his on top of his game and knows his sh!t. otherwise he would not recommend AW owners to destroy their laptops to use LM magic. whats the point of team LHZ?

Nobody said anything about turning off the fans. when the whole system is on load, fans will be in use, therefore no such thing as idle fanless vrams blowing up. I use custom fan. And I happen to turn off my fans to a fanless system on eco mode. aslong as the heatsinks and pipes are cold. there is nothing to worry about. for the beginners, just use grizzly kryo, that will get you 2nd best cool temps. if you want tier 1 temps. LM is a must - with top fujipoly 14/17W pads its proven in the AW systems.

there is such things as advanced mode fans or silent mode. so fans spin at certain temps u adjust acording to what you like them to be. low temps then u push up the percentage. its all custom stuff.

I had this same strange problem (green circles and shapes) only in fire strike test GPU +200/+350MHz but not in gaming ever and I fixed it, I suggest not to OC GPU when doing intense gaming and your room ambient temperature above 26 degree also keep an eye on GPU temperature while gaming with OC GPU and make sure it's temp don't stay long above 85...

you can use DGC dashboard on mobile to monitor the temps if you have android or ios

The above suggestion is not the permanent fix.

The above problem is only confirm with GTX1080 but yet not confirm with GTX1070.

as far CPU fan noise issue, this has been discussed many times, please read last 3 or 4 pages for proper solution of the problem.

I agree with that. Heatsinks are there to dissipate the heat from the surfaces they attach to. If the heatsink gets too warm fans will spin up to cool it.

If the vram gets hot heatsink will pick up the heat and that will have impact on cpu temp. Cpu gets warm - fans kick in.

agree with you but @kennyman reply to my post was not about how heat sink works.....

you are wrong, GPU vram heat sink has nothing to do with CPU heat sink, CPU fan or CPU temp and also GPU vrams have no heat sensors and no fail safe and if vrams get heatup, they can't kick any fan...just...phuuuufffff

First of all, AW and GT73 cooling systems are totally different, how...?

AW laptop has one piece HeatSink for CPU/GPU and Thermal pads with 2 fans which shares the load and this theory of yours "If the gpu/cpu are cold therefore the heatsinks are cold, therefore all those chips will be cold since the whole heatsink system is cold" will work on it

GT73VR laptop has 3 separate and independent heatsinks, one heat sink for GPU with one fan which only cool down GPU Chip (Left side), one heatsink for GPU vram and one heatsinsk for CPU and 2nd fan (Right side) which cool down both GPU vram and CPU Chip so this theory "If the gpu/cpu are cold therefore the heatsinks are cold, therefore all those chips will be cold since the whole heatsink system is cold" won't work here....

Using 14/17W pads with LM and saying the laptop has perfect cooling system.....really.......all that money in millions spent on R & D every year just to make better cooling system, why they are wasting time and money, they can just tell end users to spend $50 on pads and $15 on LM and ship us the laptop with heatsink so we can install them.....

iunlock and other fixed cooling problem with AW laptop, my respect for them but does GT73VR has cooling problem....big time No....

If a company launching a laptop (clevo) or suggesting to fix the laptop heating problem (dell) by using LM, means the laptop cooling system is nothing but piece of junk....LM is after market upgrade not something you get a laptop with and says I've extremely good cooling system OR later you must have to use LM to fix the heating problem....solving heating problem...not upgrading or making the cooling system better.....

GT73VR has one of the best stock cooling system which can be excellent with LM but AW or Clevo can't compete with it...their stock cooling system failed and LM seems like the only option for their cooling system to work and keep the system cool under load.....

I didn't say anything about turning the fans off at all....my suggestion was all about not using LM on CPU, instead can use Grizzly Kryo and use LM only on GPU and change the GPU thermal pads, can go for phobya but Grizzly minus 8 are extremely good, flexible and good thermal conductivity @ 8w/mk

If you look at my above reply, the pictures of heat sinks used in GT73, you see 3 separate heat sinks where GPU vram heat sink totally dependent on CPU fan and CPU fan speed and air flow only dependent on CPU temp, if low CPU temp means low fan speed means low air flow....

if you will watch following video @ 11:30 onwards you will see the temps after 3D mark test and see when the guy measuring the temp on left side, it's GPU vram heat sink temp around 43° which after the test not during the test where also keep in mind that the laptop has stock thermal paste not LM on CPU and fan spinning high....and if LM applied, fan will be spinning low and temp will be higher on GPU vram heatsink.....

Also vrams have no temp monitoring sensors and so as no fail safe as like GPU / CPU if overheated but on other hands vrams not tends to get too hot as compare to CPU / GPU dye but if MSI design the cooling system like the CPU fan has to cool down both CPU and GPU vram heatsink, they also spent huge amount of time and money on it and they are not stupid too and their must be minimum airflow needed to keep the GPU vram heatsink to get cool and keep the vrams not get heated....apply LM on CPU can bring the CPU fan speed low and under load there are high chances GPU vram heatsink may not get enough required air flow due to slow CPU fan and can cause vrams......phuuuuffffffff.........hope now you get the point......

GT73VR has 3 seperate heat sinks so I will suggest....

GPU heatsink only covers GPU dye and has independent fan to cool the heatsink, so if apply LM on GPU will drop it's temp and drop the fan speed...highly recommend this.....

Change stock thermal pads to minus 8 (I used minus 8) 11/14/17W can be used....higher the conductivity doesn't mean it will keep chips cool, it only means it will transfer the heat from chip to heatsink faster...highly recommend this....

Apply Grizzly Kryo on CPU and let the CPU fan spin above 2400RPM so it will keep doing its job to keep cooling the GPU vram heatsink.....

With Grizzly Kryo on CPU, ambient temp @ 24, OC 4.1Ghz, temps barely touches 60 while gaming.....what max you can ask for.......

lolzzz...I know and I ain't using it, already used minus 8 on GPU and Phobya 7W on CPU...totally satisfied highly recommend only minus 8 for both CPU / GPU, when used minus 8 on GPU it's like pads are made for it, heat sink sit evenly without any pressure applied......

3 strips of Grizzly minus 8 size 120x20x1.0mm enough for both GPU / CPU and at end some spares left if done right.....

some people think higher conductivity means cooler chip but it's just misconception, higher conductivity only means faster heat transfer....despressing the heat and keeping the chips cool is job of heat sink if passive or heatsink & fan if active cooling system....

The openings on the sides, blows or aspires the air? And those in the back?

The 120Hz display is an IPS or TN? I'm told there is no IPS 120hz true slab?

    your screen is :

Opening on sides and back blow the hot air, air intake is in bottom, from the mesh holes.....

It's TN and 100% TN panel, not IPS, it's just advertise "Display Like IPS" and TN panel is close to IPS.....

Sorry for the late response the liquid metal didn't drop my temps much I think I applied it wrong so I removed it and put normal thermal paste. My MSI screen went bad so they're in the process of replacing it(new egg) I have been thinking about getting the SLi version does anyone think it is worth it over the single 1080

I have been using that app and temps never goes above 80C. +200/350Mhz its a very high OC. I wanted to test Firestrike with +100/200MHz because I was planning to use that for 24/7 but I still can see the green circles and shades without OC.

    couple of questions

whats the nvidia driver version....? you can check it in nvidia control panel.

did you update the laptop to the latest bios...?

after cold boot (let's say laptop stayed off for more then 30 mins), run the benchmark and do you still see these green circles on GPU stock settings (No OC)

did you have any additional hardware attached while benchmarking e.g external usb hard drives WD passport etc (flash drive, mouse doesn't matter).

I only saw green circles / screen blinking (not flickering) when OC the GPU @ +200/350Mhz once

    - I have tried using v376.33, v376.19 and v375.63 and I still see the green circles.
    - I just updated to the latest Bios and I still see the green circles, screen blinking and shades.
    - Yes, I still see the artifacts. I woke up this morning and I ran Firestrike with and without OC and the problem persists.
    - No, only my Razer deathadder is connected.
