I cannot find the reference forum / thread (couple of months old), a user reported OC MSI GTX 1080 Card fried while gaming and before the card die, showed green circles and squares and later spark on the card and phhhuuufffff.
Try one last thing, run the benchmark with cooler boost fan option and see if the issue persist.
Green circles, squares, screen blinking only caused by VRAM Clock Offset values and you said now without OC you are seeing green circles in benchmark test you need to contact MSI
sorry to give you the bad news,

The display 120Hz on GT73VR is this reference ??

Quick question - is a repaste for the gpu and cpu heatsinks worth the effort?
-
The good German Notebook Enthusiast
Do you see that stuff in 3D apps only or in Windows environment as well? I had something similar which I could trace back to stereoscopic 3D setting being always on in the nvidia control panel. Probably not that easy for you but at least a Lil chance.

Personally tested MX4, ICD and Grizzly Kryo on CPU/GPU against stock thermal paste just 4 to 6 degree drop in temperature
one user bought from re seller with ICD re-paste and posted the temps, no big difference, just 2 to 3 degree drop
another user bought from re seller with CLLU and posted temps and after seeing the temps I seriously have doubts that either re seller didn't re paste CLLU or no noticeable difference.
another user re pasted Grizzly LM and said no big drop in temps and said may be he done the re paste wrong....
at this point nothing is clear that re paste worth the effort or not.....
I'm waiting for grizzly LM, have to import it (not available in my country) and i will test the LM on GPU only and post the result but it will take time....

What happened to your screen?

Yes, the 72 just doesn't have G-Sync.

Would you guys do 1080 or 1070sli

1080 all the way.
SLI support is so bad these days, the heavy tax the SLI SKUs carry won't be worth it. -
Ok great is the 7820hk worth 300?

I would advise that you pick the 1080.

That's what I'll go with burying to figure out if I should do 6820hk or 7830hk is 300 price difference

The 7820hk is not worth 300 USD more than the 6820hk, IMO.

Sorry gentlemen if this has already been asked and it buried somewhere in these posts...but what is the exact Kingston memory that is being used in the GT73VR? I want to populate the open slots with 16GB more and don't want any conflicts. Can you find them on Amazon? Thanks again in advanced....

Thank you Shehary! Saves me a lot of time and lot of reading....(even though I plan on blasting through this whole thread one day soon.) Just purchased a MSI Gt73 VR with 1070 from Best Buy...love it -
you are welcome, should read this whole thread, loads of precious information, user experience and OC / benchmarks / temperature information.
First thing you must do is create factory restore backup on flash drive, 32GB drive required.
also you can use HWInfo64 tool to get all the hardware information of your laptop....
excellent and best performance laptop no doubt in it.
enjoy.....
-
I think you're the first person to report buying from Best Buy. Did your store have it in stock or did you have it shipped?
Also, what is the build month from the sticker on the bottom? -
Great shots of the parts, I would also love to get some sort of guide to replace the keyboard.

To answer your first question I originally had bought a Alienware R17 with the 1070 from Best Buy and of course, had the infamous high temps and all those well documented problems with it....so I came to this forum, started reading on the MSI GT73VR, and returned the Alienware towards the end of December and exchanged it for the MSI GT73VR with the same 1070. The sales rep at Best Buy had to order it as they don't carry them in store but it was shipped from Best Buy and I had it 5 days later delivered to my door. I am an Elite Plus member at Best Buy so I got free 2 day shipping. It has worked great out of the box. Came with all the same specs as the normal Titan-017 model from MSI. No gimping on any hardware level ordering through Best Buy. Love the 120mz screen too and the supported G-synce. And the best thing...it....just....works....right out of the box. Alienware....well you all know the stories there.
For question 2, I will get back to you on that later when I am around my laptop again. This whole working for a living thing is stopping me at this moment
-
I'll contact my seller to return it. Here is a video playing Battlefiled 1
-
I posted way back about uneven lighting, it could be due to a spill that occurred but it could also have been like that and I only noticed it when somebody else post a picture of theirs. It's really a minor issue, if it turns out that re pasting may be a good idea when warmer temps some around then it's something I would look into.

So my GT73 1070 showed up today. A few annoyances. 3 LEDs on keyboard won't show orange, yellow...etc but will show green, blue and red. I don't know if I'm overly sensitive but I'm hearing some kind of noise that sounds something like a very faint miniature low frog croak, lasts about half a second and it repeats every 2-5 seconds. Haven't figured out the trigger yet. Dragon center is kind of annoying. When installing nvidia driver 376.33 the screen flickered and went black and never came back on so I waited 30min and restarted and everything was fine and 376.33 installed just fine, just found that weird. Updating drivers is annoying and should be made easier, I feel like this was much easier with my asus G75VW in finding if all the system drivers were up to date. I still have to browse through the MSI drivers on the site to see if I need to update anything. I updated the audio/nahimic and dragon center so far.
Other than that I've just been waiting as software and games install. I downloaded Furmark and prime95, will test this week. Sound is very impressive. No backlight bleed either. -
I had the black screen issue when installing video drivers and then I started using the custom installation with the clean installation box checked and the problem went away. There have been a few around here that have had some sort of fan noise, perhaps that could be the trigger for your noise.

Put your ear right up to the fan exhaust and listen. I have a similar noise coming from the left side of my laptop which would indicate the CPU fan as that's the only moving part on that side.
Curiously, I can make the noise go away by selecting the "power option" in the dragon center shift menu. -
Thanks! You and I were in the exact same boat. I had an AW17 from Dell then another from my local Best Buy but returned them for the MSI. I got mine from Amazon because they didn't charge sales tax in my state when I bought it last month.
My build date is October 2016 and I ordered it in mid December.kennyman, DukeCLR and captaincranium like this. -

I checked my build date last night for ya and mine was the same...October of 2016 and I ordered at the end of December. NO complaints so far. I have since installed a Crucial MX300 1TB M.2 as my boot drive that I already had, did a clean Windows install on it and changed out the Killer wireless card for an Intel 8265 that I ordered off Ebay. The ONLY thing that might be an issue is I am starting to hear that low fan noise from the CPU fan but I have opened a ticket with MSI and am going to have them send me another one asap to replace it. Otherwise appears to be running great.
Question Maineiac12, where was your warranty sticker located on the bottom. Mine was NOT over any seams, it was a small one directly over the middle screw hole on the bottom and I had to puncture it to open it up.
Also, can anyone answer a quick question on G-Sync....I know it is buried somewhere in this thread but do you turn on G-Sync in the Nvidia panel and turn OFF V-sync in the in-game options? First time owning a G-sync panel. That is what I have been doing and everything seems to be running buttery smooth but wanted to make sure. Also, when I reinstalled windows (I made a backup USB image first when I first started the system), I didn't install True Color. What exactly is the best ICC color profile to use for this system that users have posted. Saw this mentioned as well but can't find it so far in the threads. Thanks a bunch everyone, this forum is great!Last edited: Jan 10, 2017DukeCLR likes this. -
Turn Gsync and Vsync on in NVCP and turn Vsync off in game, that seems to be working for me anyway. The Vsync defaults to let the "use the 3d app" mode.

Thank you....didn't know you had to turn off V-Sync in the NVCP too...
Really wanted the 1080 but the price difference between the two units through Best Buy were $2099 for the 1070 cardhttp:// www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-1tb-hard-drive-128gb-solid-state-drive-aluminum-black/5580312.p?skuId=5580312 ,
or $2799 for the exact same one but with a 1080http:// www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-1tb-hard-drive-128gb-solid-state-drive-aluminum-black/5580305.p?skuId=5580305 .
Couldn't justify that price difference just for the upgraded graphics card....if it was around $2500 I might have jumped but not $2800 -
I meant turn VSYNC ON in NVCP. OFF in game, my bad.
-
the major difference beside core clock / memory clock difference is the vram, 1070 has samsung vram GDDR5 but 1080 has mircon vram GDDR5X with double the bandwidth capacity so proper over clocking can really boost the GPU but for that need vbios to be unlocked.....which seems at this point is flash protected and cannot be unlocked.....
-
if there is a noise coming out of CPU fan, don't send it for RMA, you can get a fan from MSI and they will ship it to you, you can replace it by yourself....few page back, I posted how to claim the CPU fan with steps....will save you the one way shipment cost too.....hmscott likes this. -
Amazon and B&H have put the 1080 version on sale for $2599 as of today. That's still a $500 difference...
My warranty sticker was in the top left corner across the seam by the nvidia logo sticker. Not covering a scre hole but was broken when I removed the cover.hmscott and captaincranium like this. -
Question for 1070 owners - is anyone using an external monitor above 1080p?
I'm considering getting a 2560x1440 external monitor and I'm wondering if the 1070 will be able to drive it at decent frame rates.hmscott likes this. -

Shehary,
Yeah that is what I did. I opened a ticket under their web page with what the problem is and that I wanted one shipped to me and I would replace it and MSI sent me a email response today with my ticket number and a vague response saying to "Please contact MSI customer service representative Tom at [email protected] with your notebook fans ordering inquiry. Mon-Fri (9:00AM-5:30PM PST)"
No phone number or anything...is that normal to start this process off?Last edited: Jan 10, 2017hmscott and Kevin@GenTechPC like this.
