Thank you I will try those suggestions. I already had Xboost USB/Storage stuff off but will try the newer Chipset and IME drivers on the MSI 7 series and see if any luck. Oh yeah, I did all of this with a clean Windows 10 install prior. Will post if I hit jackpot in case anyone else is having issues
Speaking of that, can someone try and transfer a large file from a external USB 3.0 drive and see what their average MB/s transfer speeds are and post them? I have nothing to compare mine too so maybe my speeds are just "normal" (hope not and hope its a driver issue) -
Chipset / IME drivers updated (from 7RF support page) -
@Shehary
How do my temps compare to yours?

Last test result Grizzly Kryo vs LM...after that I didn't run any test
@ 23 / 24 room ambient temp @ Auto Fans (Fire Strike Test)
GPU 2 degree higher as compare to LM
GPU Idle = 38 / 39
GPU Stock = 75 / 77
GPU OC (both clock / ram) = 77 / 79 (never touch 80)
CPU 7 to 9 degree higher as compare to LM
CPU Idle = 38 / 39
CPU Turbo = 70 / 72
CPU 4.1 OC = 71 / 73
- Are these temps normal? For 7th Gen Yes but still high as in Turbo mode, an hour of intense gaming will make the temp reach 90 for sure.
- Are these core differentials an issue? Anything above 2 or 3 degree difference is an issue, The core with high temp will be the first which hit the boundary line.
Turbo CPU max per core: 83 / 76 / 85 / 80
lets just assume if the difference is 2 to 3 degree then
Turbo CPU max per core: 79 / 76 / 80 / 77
- Should I exchange the laptop or try a repaste myself? You can re paste and if it makes the difference, keep it, if not return it, re paste will not do any harm (LM is another story) but on other hand you will know the reason to return if re paste won't fix the uneven temps / lower the temps...
Keep in mind, once you unscrew the CPU heatsink, thick thermal paste is the only paste gives your the result and helps core temps close to even where MX2/ MX4 type paste totally useless.
IMO, after comparing the temps, your laptop temps are high....

I also found out that when running prime95 test, if USB drive is connected, it start disconnecting and reconnecting by itself...so defiantly current issue with USB ports....
actually what MSI do is, use the hardware as it which other manufactures like intel provide them and don't bother to optimize it, you can check this by installing Intel Driver Update Utility and see the result. where as the other manufactures like Dell, they optimize the hardware for maximum performance....
GT73 is an excellent laptop and does what it suppose to do out of the box...few sacrifices can be made... -
How much higher were your temps with stock paste?
If it's not throttling and kaby just runs this much hotter maybe I'm fine? I looked at notebookchek's review of the 7820hk and they got similarly high temps with theirs too so I'm afraid an exchange may not gain me anything but my time in shipping it back and setting up another new pc. LOL -
personally, i don't like HDD temps go above 50, idle temps CPU / GPU go above 40, under work load, CPU not above 55, intense gaming (1080p Ultra setting) GPU not above 80 with OC and CPU not above 75 with OC...and with Grizzly Kyro I achieved that....now I have this itch to use the LM to bring the temps more down but I have to wait for LM to reach me, not available in my country...have to import it...
higher temps in benchmark not problem, as bench-marking and gaming are two different scenarios, in firestrike CPU hit 73max but while gaming it stays under 70 where GPU hit 79max but during game does go to 79 but mostly stays at 75...
Grizzly suggest the spread method, I tried it and not satisfied with temps so re paste again with pea method, pea method drop the temp 1 to 2 degree as compare to spread method....
give it a shot and re paste with Kryo, again re pasting will not hurt anything....
be careful with thermal pads on CPU
if get chance take some snap shots, wana see what changes MSI made with 7th Gen.... -
a message shown after restart, new dragon center update available to download, on support page, there is no new version, so downloading the update and installing.
Update:
Installed new version of DGC is 1.2.1701
CPU 6 bars issue not fixed (still first 2 bars over lapping), no idea what else it fixed.....hahahahahaLast edited: Jan 17, 2017Atma likes this. -
Speaking of speakers... has anyone ever taken theirs completely apart to see how the speaker is fastened to the chassis? I'm wonder if they use a screw or just some tape. My speaker popped loose after a couple hours but it didn't come that way so I'm wondering if an adhesive maybe just gave out or it wasn't screwed in all the way?
I fixed it by shoving some thin foam under it but I wonder if that's a long term solution. It seems silly to return the laptop just for that reason... -
Some one was saying something about who has the balls....
Updated the EC Firmware from 17A1EMS1.107 to 17A1EMS1.108 (Downloaded from GT73VR 7RF support page), proof is below, update on your own risk....6 CPU bars issue fixed...
EC firmware update method, run the ECWIN.BAT file as Administrator...follow the onscreen instruction...let the process finished, wait for laptop to shut down completely (very important: wait and so all lights turn off), Than power on the laptop.

about speakers, fixing with foam is good idea here this post pictures will give you the idea that to reach the speaker you have to disassemble half of the laptop.... -
Hello guys....just thought I'd peek in to say hi. Going to be digging into the GT73VR and unleash this thing...

oh boy right on time, i was looking for an in depth review for this beast since there are going to be some good offers with the skylake now that its being refreshed with kaby lake and i really concider getting it . And alas the allmighty @iunlock is gonna give us his lights , what a timing indeed . I hope for a comparison between the aw 17r4( i believe they are kinda same specced?) and why not the 775dm3 clevo machine (ofcourse the cpu is desktop vs laptop but nontheless i believe its gonna be great for the rest components and the serviceability)

I'm working on tuning it as we speak....I must say, wow this thing runs rich haha...but that's okay...
Right now 41x is rock stable and I'm actually under volting at the moment. Crazy I know....usually it's having to go up at this range.
I should be able to get some good mileage out of this...
Stay tuned...Shehary and ThePerfectStorm like this. -
Would you guys be so kind to do some leg work for me. Actually you may already know some of this stuff right off the top, however...
Is it a known issue for the CPU to throttle down to ~33x when running OCCT? I have it OC'ed at 41x and when running some benches it stays locked at 41x, but when running OCCT it drips way low to ~32-33x ....hmmm...
I run several CPU tests of all sorts in order to get a broad range of taxing in on the CPU, but for some reason it's not liking OCCT.
Could you guys list some known issues to get me up to speed real quick? As it'll help me with my angle of approach.
Thanks -
-
There are many known issues (specially CPU fan noise issue) with this laptop but none ever reported by any user saying that if OC above 4.0 it throttle down, many users locked it at 4.1 either with DGC or BIOS and CPU remain stable,
also if running prime95 test on stock clock and if a USB 2.0 / 3.0 drive connected with laptop, the drive(s) start connecting / disconnecting, seems like usb ports running out of power.
also this laptop kind of hybrid, it also use power from battery and drain it to 90% (may be a MSI feature to extend battery life) and then start charging again...
also in some cases, if running benchmark like firestrike while battery charging you will not get good score / performance. -
-
Rebooted and I get the update prompt again. Weird... -
I'm fairly certain it's standard MSI hybrid power. If it's the same implementation as last gen, keeping it under max load will drain it slowly down to 30% at which point it will throttle the components to their stock TDPs until the battery is charged or you unplug and replug it above 30%.

Hmmm... Okay so it looks like there's an override happening in the bios. In some apps the clocks stick, but with certain apps like OCCT it dips down so there is a known conflict there.
I'm still testing things out to hopefully resolve this, but either way I'll proceed in running the usual benches and see what happens. -

I too will be getting this Laptop when i can find the balls to get it . just waiting on offers , I.E the accessories pack like backpack, mouse and headphones or just a backpack will do .. as i had it with my faulty GT73VR 6RE and it made it more worth the price .
