someone mentioned about low pressure of HS in laptop, I agree, question is
if pressure increased (let's assume if pressure can be increased, let's say 10% more) is it safe...? -
Is there any performance benefit to 32gb or 64gb vs the stock 16gb for gaming?

I always go for the max RAM though for bragging rights
I also setup a RAM Drive as a temp download folder to not put a lot of wear and tear on my SSDs in addition, the more RAM you have, the more Windows can cache in the background for faster access
but for games, it's not gonna matter -
A factory stock GT73, is the default 16GB of RAM installed under the keyboard?

Hello, all
I drove about an hour each way today to get my hands on display models of the MSI machines. They didn't stock the GT73VR, but they had almost all the other models in the series. I've got some questions for owners based on this, because right now the GT73VR is my front-runner, with the GS73VR is second choice (probably).
First, the GT display units they had showed terrible audio during YouTube playback and Unigine Valley benchmark runs with sound. There was really audible crackle in the speakers. Is this normal, or is it an artifact of the stock Nahimic drivers and other MSI bloatware? I'd say it was a cracked speaker, but I heard the same thing on three machines.
Second, given the GT73VR's size, what do you folks recommend for a backpack? I looked at the Everki Titan, which is wonderfully made but is slightly oversized for the GT73VR. But the Everki Stride, though rated for a 17.3" laptop, technically is too small by about 1.5 cm in two dimensions. I need to manage my new machine during airline travel, as carry-on, so I need to keep the backpack close in size to the laptop. Will the GT73VR actually fit into an Everki Stride, or do I have to get the Titan and try to squish it down at the top? What other packs do you guys recommend?
Third, I've read the posts about display banding on the 4K panels. I need the 4K for my CAD work; is the banding bad enough to be a serious concern? Is banding a warranty-exchangeable "defect", or do all the 4K models have it?
Fourth, I'm planning on buying with a 2 TB Samsung 960 Pro NVMe SSD. Will the GT73VR push the NVMe at full speed (around 3 GB/sec read, 2.5 GB/sec write) on large sequential files?
Thanks for your input and suggestions. -
I also had a weird one once that after upgrading the BIOS the IMEI info wasn't updated, so MSI sent me a custom set of instructions on how to force the update of that area only with bin with only that data.
MSI is pretty cool about helping you keep from sending in an RMA based on firmware, if it can be done.

Note that Asus, Abit, Gigabyte, EVGA, and some I am not remembering at the moment have done this too, for laptops and MB's. Just ask nicely, and state your need specifically and clearly, with technical details so as to make the request unambiguous.Kevin@GenTechPC and Shehary like this. -

I use the Everki titan with my GT73VR and I love it. The compartment isn't too big and it has a strap to hold everything in place. Plus it has tons of storage for the power brick and other accessories. If you buy a skylake model, right now some resellers are including an MSI branded backpack for free.
I have the 120hz 1080p screen so I can't talk about the 4K.
I have an 850 EVO and 600p SSD and those aren't as fast as the 960 pro but I've not heard anyone complain about speed reductions. The laptop has 2 m.2 nvme slots as well as a single m.2 sata slot and 2.5" sata drive.syscrusher likes this. -

Oh, and I've owned the GT70, GT72, and GT73, and have never experienced audio crackling.

They were still selling the GT70 at the time, so I'm guessing they skipped straight to GT72 nomenclature, to differentiate it as the much newer, more premium chassis.nightingale likes this. -

I'll bet the audio problem I heard was because the store updated Windows but not the audio driver.DukeCLR likes this. -

I also transported on top of the above, an ipad, a shield tablet and an Epson projector. That was when I was traveling with the kids to Germany.
Love the backpack very much.

I've updated EC firmware and yea the fan is a tad more chirpy as the CPU gets to 1800 rpm when is nearly 50 degrees. Think I may have to repaste if I ever get in contact with MSI uk support about these chirpy fans and maybe they send me replacements!Last edited: Jan 22, 2017hmscott likes this. -

My jury is still out on whether to opt for "performance" or "mobility", but if I go with the GT73VR, I'm almost certainly going to invest in a new pack for it. I actually have a Targus that is large enough, but it's really *too* big and is from the olden days with a "luggable" system.DukeCLR likes this. -

It is very durable, the handles are sturdy despite the heavy weight of the laptop with the charger, it doesn't feel like the handles are going to break if you hold it from only one of them. I have walked in light rain as well while having the backpack on and the laptop wasn't wet so that's another plus point.
Speaking of storage, you can store your entire room in there (not literally) but you have so many pockets / sections it's super roomy and convenient.
PS: It costs an arm and a leg but hey, it's the best out there and this beast deserves nothing but the best.hmscott and syscrusher like this. -

I looked at a number of bags yesterday, including the Titan. The Everki I thought were the best-built out of the 10 or more brands this store carried (it was a whole aisle, two sides -- quite a selection). My only reservation about the Titan is whether it will fit under an airline seat in coach class. (I work for a small company that treats its people well, but some of our customers are big companies that treat everyone except executives like cattle. And the few remaining US airlines are godawful in every way they know how.) -
This may be a silly question. I went to msi to check fro updates on my 6RE but msi does not list the product now. All I can find it the GT72 6RE and GT73 7RE.
Do I just use the 7RE? Other than the kaby lake specific driver. -

I see guys bragging they got a $XX backpack that "fits great", when it's made of thin non-padded material that offer no "bounce" protection to the laptop.
Make sure you can afford to get a well protected laptop bag before you purchase, so you aren't tempted to get a cheap bag only to damage your brand new laptop just by "setting it down" a couple of times on hard surfaces.
The mass and energy contained in a swinging bag holding 30lbs of stuff is enormous and if transferred to the laptop in some cases will physically damage it.

I would open resource monitor during a time when you are most busy in your normal routine and see just how much memory you are using. Unless you know you need more than 16gb, it's unlikely you'll benefit from the $100 upgrade.
However, if you are like @Phoenix and need to have a big e-peen, then by all means... Get as much RAM as possible!Spartan@HIDevolution and hmscott like this. -

Onother question. When you do first backup, is it for windows aswell? More than 17gb
Etc if i would need to reinstal windows, would it work? -
I´m selling the two toshiba nvme ssds. 256gb is not enough for me. Now, my question is, will it be better two samsung 960 evo 256gb in raid or one 512gb? Will i feel any difference in performance? I know that 512gb will be more future proof, but that is not my concern, as i dont need more than 300gn ( I have a nas for everything else).
Thank you! -
