I know it sounds silly, but as I shot the front cover, since removed the two screws, but it is very hard to pull, I'm afraid to break

You don't "pull it", you "slide" it to the right, then lift it up.

So I have been looking into the crashes and I have found a pattern (I think). My computer will crash within 20 minutes of startup every OTHER startup. I'll start it up once, do stuff for about 20 mins at max, and crash. I'll start it up again, no crashes occur until I turn it off and start it up again, then the cycle repeats. Anyone have any ideas? The crashes are pretty annoying and I need help finding a fix.

1) Use the 353.62 drivers. These are the last stable set that don't cause crashing for (most) people. This is the driver set that I am still on. I don't get any crashes with this driver.
2) Use more recent drivers, but on your first boot, at the logon screen, select reboot (instead of logging on). Then you should be OK.
Personally I cannot be bothered with option 2), so I am sticking with the 353.62's for now, until Nvidia sort their lives out and give us a driver set that actually works properly! -

This will probably be the most uninformed question I have posted but I'm slowly counting down the days before I can place my order and I'm torn between adding extra/better ram or extra PCIe solid state space. I really don't think I will need more than 500 GB in the PCIe slot for gaming so I am leaning more toward extra ram to help cut down on load times and for minor video editing but I can't seem to find much information regarding performance differences between 32 GB of DDR4 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory and 32 GB of Kingston HyperX Impact Memory Kit DDR4 2133MHz CL13 SODIMM (4 x 8 GB for both). Could someone help improve my knowledge? I thought the brand and type of ram really didn't matter but the bang for your buck depended on the MHz level you added. Is there really large performance difference between the two types?

Lower latency ram will provide better throughput of data, however DDR4 gives you a lot of bandwidth and speed already so the difference wont be huge. The ram is likely to be cheaper to upgrade in the future.

Hi all,
I've read the past 100 pages or so, and hoping to get some feedback. I was very big into the latest and greatest in PCs way back, but stopped around 8 or so years ago so bear with me and my ignorance a bit. I built a desktop recently, and have been loving it. Just one problem, it ties me to the computer room. The significant other is understanding but I don’t want to be that anti-social…but I also want to play some games. That got me looking at laptops, something to supplement my desktop. If it’s just to move around the house, a larger size is probably a plus. I found the GT80, and love the looks of it. Mechanical keyboard is a huge plus, as is the positioning of the keyboard. I’m thinking this will be used at a table, and having the keyboard at the edge will make for a more natural position coupled with a mouse.
Here’s where I need some feedback. I’m looking at the SLI-002 model, but are any of the older models better? From what I’m reading, the newest iteration from Intel is not always the best. I’m looking at some SLI-009 models with the 4980HQ that seem to be good. I think they’re missing the latest 3x4 pci-e M.2 connector though? SLI-002 is at the top of my budget, so I think that’s the right model but want to hear opinions. I think I have Haswell, Broadwell and Skylake options to choose from. With the amount of money, I want to futureproof as much as possible. OC maybe down the road? I value cool and quiet over 10% in FPS though.
Next, my concerns with the GT80. It’s super expensive, so I want to get it right. How big of a deal is not having G sync? I hadn’t heard of it until Saturday, but now it seems like it’s the best thing ever (if you read about it online at least). I’m okay with the 1080p resolution, that means more life out of the 980m’s to me. No G sync isn't something I can change or upgrade though..
Speaking of which, the SLI-072 with desktop 980’s is out of my price range. But I have read articles mentioning the 990m? I know there’s always going to be the next great thing around the corner, but I feel like the 980m has been around a while? Again, just my perception doing a lot of research the past week, I’ve been out of the game for a long time.
Next, sound. How loud is this thing going to be? IE wife is sitting 10 feet away on the couch, is it going to sound like I’m running the vacuum cleaner if I’m playing a new big title game at whatever settings it wants to default me to?
Finally, value. The Dominator 72s looks nice. The Asus ROG looks nice. Heck the Alienware looks nice. But no one seems to have anything that compares to the GT80 that I can see. The next closes seems to be the newer high end dominator which you can get with a single desktop 980, but it’s only $300 less than the SLI-002. The many faces of Clevo seem to the more recommended than the MSI, due to desktop CPUs and GPU options. But they don’t have that wow factor for me like the MSI do, and if they offer an SLI option I haven’t seen it. And so I have really set my sights on the GT80, but just want some outside views from owners before I spend this kind of money. I’m less worried about a better option existing, but more worried about a newer GT80 being out sooner rather than later.
Sorry for the novel, thanks all! -
FYI - the Support Pages for the GT80 are back to normal, all the individual downloads are back, and MSI pulled Live Update
For example, my GT80 SLI-263 Broadwell - Win 10 x64, Win 8.1 x64, Win 7 x64
http://us.msi.com/product/notebook/support/GT80-Titan-SLI-GTX-980M-SLI-5.html
I also got a reply from MSI, very cute:
"MSI Tech. 11/23/2015 Hi Scott, please remove "Live update" utility. This utility as described is for our desktop components ?motherboards and video cards" only. thank you"
They say nothing about returning the download areas back to normal and removing Live Update as the only download available for the GT80's -
So where is the wireless Lan card located? It's not visible on the top removable tray or the bottom... anybody have a pic? Wanted to upgrade it....
-
ok, nevermind, I found it (after voiding my warranty which wasn't needed). Its located in the very back behind the screen. you remove the back panel, which isn't held down by any screw I believe and the wireless card is right there. Hard to pull out, but you can do it without having to remove the whole stinking mobo. I put in the newer killer wireless 1535 card.
-
Please post photo's, external / internal where you found it.
And, please let us know if you find any improvement in the 1535 over the 1525 -
For RMA, do you send in the hard drive as it is or do you recommend deleting data? I guess you delete sensitive data at the least.

One person has already reported that MSI erased their disk and installed the new Windows 10 OS when they sent their GT80 in for RMA.
What I usually suggest, in general for RMA, is to put in all the components your laptop came with originally.
Most of us upgrade the memory, the storage, the OS, and although there is nothing wrong with doing that - it isn't the same configuration the vendor promised to support.
So I usually keep all the original components I replaced so that if I need to RMA I have them to put back in the laptop for service.
You would remove your drives/data and replace it with the original drives and OS install before sending it for RMA.
I hope your RMA is short and successfulLast edited: Nov 24, 2015hoofhearted and Midou like this. -

Not having GSYNC after using it didn't seem to make a staggering impact, here is why. In most cases you will be able to hold 60fps in all games at all times so you will be synced to your panel, its only the times that you are not synced that you could tell a difference and during that time the differences would be seen when your screen was tearing. The other piece is that they run at 75fps instead of 60 by default but the GT80 panel will over clock to 75 or 90 fps pretty easily. In result this is a double edge sword situation, is it cool to have sure but is it a deal breaker? Not for an SLI 980m machine in my opinion, for a single 980m yes I think it would have more weight at this point due to less power putting you in the situation of less than 75fps more commonly.
How loud, well I am going to be blunt here. If you play games that stress the machine its going to get pretty excited and sound like a dust buster, it has 2 large 12v fans that can turn a high rpm so its not quiet by no means. There isn't anything you can do other than run the silent option along with Shift Green or Comfort mode to keep noise down but this will reduce the performance which might work for your needs during those times. The more power you use the more heat it will generate and the harder the fans will run as that's whats left over from it.
To compete with the GT80/GT80s right now the only thing in my book would be one of the clevo models such as the P870DM-G but there is no 18 solution that is dependable at this point. For a quick tip I would suggest staying away from Alienware as their name doesn't have the value it did in the past. If you purchase a skylake machine you will not be able to overclock the GPUS either for a while as the vbois is not unlocked and can not be until its released.
If you are looking for a good used GT80 to save some money well mine is up for sale as its the GT80-009 and is a proven contender.Zero989 likes this. -
Is shutdown always a true "shutdown"? The reason I ask this is because when trying to analyze the various NVidia driver related crashes, I tried following some advice I received on these forums -- Use shutdown and not sleep or hibernate. However, when I did a shutdown, then a reboot, I still get a hard freeze after some time. But when it crashes, and I boot after that, I get a good long run without crashes. I tried controlling these two scenarios and noting timestamps looked in Event Viewer to trying and make some sense of this. When I did the clean shutdown then boot, I noticed in the event viewer, EventID = 42, Source = Kernel-Power, General Message: The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Application API. This occurred during the shutdown sequence??? However, after a crash and a hold-the-power-button-in reboot, I don't get this (system does not really get to do the shutdown sequence).
Anyway, I am either trying to fix this or I am going to try and see what MSI support says as, I want the newer NVidia drivers to keep up with the newer games, and expect not to have to deal with these things when spending this much money on a machine.
Also, I opened it and replaced harddrives. However, I still have the original SSD m.2 pair that the machine came with the OS and such still on there. Being that I teared there little warranty stick over one of the screw hole, will this be an issue?
Also, FYI, I made a powershell script to help me track these issues as well as compare behaviors of other machines:
Code:$Query = @" <QueryList> <Query Id="0" Path="System"> <Select Path="System"> *[System[(EventID=20001)] and UserData[InstallDeviceID[(SetupClass='{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}')]]] or *[System[(EventID=6008)]] or *[System[(EventID=4101)]] or *[System[(EventID=1074)]] or *[System[(EventID=131)]] or *[System[(EventID=42)]] or *[System[(EventID=41)]] or *[System[(EventID=30)]] or *[System[(EventID=27)]] or *[System[(EventID=20)]] or *[System[(EventID=14)]] or *[System[(EventID=12) and Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-General']]] or *[System[(EventID=2)]] or *[System[(EventID=1) and Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Power-Troubleshooter']]] </Select> </Query> </QueryList> "@ $events = Get-WinEvent -FilterXml $Query ForEach ($Event in $Events) { # Convert the event to XML $eventXML = [xml]$Event.ToXml() Add-Member -InputObject $Event -MemberType NoteProperty -Force -Name DriverVersion -Value $eventXML.Event.UserData.InstallDeviceID.DriverVersion Add-Member -InputObject $Event -MemberType NoteProperty -Force -Name DriverDescription -Value $eventXML.Event.UserData.InstallDeviceID.DriverDescription Add-Member -InputObject $Event -MemberType NoteProperty -Force -Name Data -Value $eventXML.Event.EventData.Data } $Events ` | Select TimeCreated ` , @{Name="EventID" ; Expression = { switch ($_.Id) { default {"$_"} }}} ` , @{Name="MessageData" ; Expression = { $DriverVersion = $_.DriverVersion; $DriverDescription = $_.DriverDescription; $Data = $_.Data; $Message = $_.Message; switch ($_.Id) { 20001 {$s ="Install $DriverDescription $DriverVersion"} 14 {$s = $Data} default {$s = $Message} } $s -replace "\r\n", " " }} ` | Out-GridView pause

The easiest test is to stop using Sleep/Hibernation, and see if the problems go away.
But, with Shutdown being a problem, there is likely a problem with Hybrid shutdown - all shutdowns with Hibernation and Fast Startup enabled are not "real" shutdowns.
Try disabling Hibernation, which will also disable Fast Startup. I also uncheck Sleep as an option in Power Control Panel - Set what buttons do - you will see it.
Do this after disabling Hibernation:
In a cmd window started As Administrator:
powercfg /h off
Then reboot, shutdown, and see if you find improvementhoofhearted likes this. -
I can confirm this works for me on Windows 10. As long as I remember to never put it to sleep when walking away, there have been no issues for the past 2 weeks.

also the problem that i cant update the nivida driver for somehow
anyone can help me with this ?
thanks in advance -
As for the freeze... can you download and run HWmonitor, MSI Afterburner and Intel XTU to monitor your CPU usage, speed and temps as well as your GPU usage, speed and temps? Depending on how the freezes present themselves, I have a hunch it is the HDD. Some HDDs have this particular situation than when they spin down to sleep due to low usage, then they wake up, they cause that 1 second freeze. This issue is present on my old GT60 and was present on my Asus N550 because they used the exact same HDD, I believe it's a type of western digital.
My titan does not have this issue though, but I am running an older model.
If it is indeed the HDD, we will find out with HWmonitor as it prevents the HDD from sleeping by always polling its temperature. -
-
Everyone experiencing the issue with nvidia drivers. I am currently testing the, well now obvious but previously confusing, situation with the drivers causing freezes, crashes etc. I always new it had something to do with shutdown instead of restart, but never ocurred to me to disable sleep and fast turn on (disabling hibernation and the actual registry). Turns out this might have been the main cause of the crashes.
I am still testing with the latest 359.00 drivers, but so far I haven't crashed. If this turns out to be true, then this means anyone with fast turn on disable won't have problems. Which means this explains why only some people have it. I think.
I have a good feeling this time. Thanks everyone that chimed in with both your concerns and issues as well as constant advice on sleep, and testing done.hoofhearted, zfwjs and hmscott like this. -
