It's easy to keep bumping up the config/cost, I would stick with the 2x one for now, and not get the cheapest drives - stick with the WD drives.

Whatever you get, make sure to get the latest firmware / software from the support site, and read up on their forum for any problems and how to solve them.

You will get better support from the vender site for the products you get than here.

Netgear $159 at Fry's on sale on Amazon for $99, maybe Fry's will price match?

    Hello,

I am going to buy the msi gt80 with the GTX 970m SLI configuration. Due to money issues, I cannot get the GTX 980m SLI. I wanted to know if I can upgrade to the gtx 980m later without having to change the HEATSINKS from the gtx 970m SLI configuration. Anyone know if the heatsinks are different or the same? Can I use the 970m heatsinks on the 980m?

My best experiences have been with WD blacks (the most recent drives in my VAIO VGN-AW270Y), & most recently WD reds (designed for 24/7 use)...I used reds in my HTPC build. WD REs are what I used for a raid 6 configuration server for my previous employer. In my opinion, REs are superior, but they are usually more expensive.

The original had a USB 3.0 version, they did not stay in production for THAT long though.

I think they are releasing a USB2.0 version because some USB2.0 device extenders do not play well with USB3.0.

Anyone have any idea to my question earlier about if the gtx 970m SLI heatsinks work with the gtx 980m SLI heatsinks when upgrading?

It's a long discussed item, and there are no between model upgrades in this generation. No 965m => 970m => 980m => 980 Desktop GPU SLI.

If you get a single GPU model, you can't upgrade to an SLI model.

The only upgrades promised will be to the next generation GPU's. 2 generations is what MSI told me about the model I purchased. The 980m / 970m / 965m / 980 mobile desktop are all the same generation.

IDK what the current models promise for upgrades - I would inquire with MSI support asking what the upgrade policy is for your specific model.

Also, IDK if MSI will offer just 1 upgrade - the highest one - say a 1080m SLI to all, or if you will get like upgrades - like for you it would be 970m SLI to 1070m SLI.

IDK how MSI will work the new 980 SLI model upgrades, if it will need to wait for a Pascal "desktop" GPU, or if you could do a 1080m SLI upgrade - it's a mystery.

It's all a mystery until the Pascal upgrades arrive :)

Aw man, that sucks. So then I cannot even upgrade my 970m SLI to 980m SLI? That sucks balls

Honestly, the expense of moving up within the same generation outweighs the benefits of the slightly better cards. Hence the saying "buy the best you can when you buy". Until Pascal comes out, your 970's should be just fine. And maybe even after...

I am sure they would work but it is not worth it. Better upgrade to pascal when it launches :) 970m sli is plenty powerful :D

Well I hope the 970m SLI systems can upgrade to the 1080m SLI instead of 1070m SLI (Just using 1080m names) lol.

The 970M was offered as upgrades to the 870m and 880m users and the 980M is offered to them and the 970M users. We will have to wait and see what happens next gen.

    Hello,

Can someone help me out here? I'm in need of help! I did a clean fresh install of windows 10 on my gt80 titan. I tried to install the nvidia driver for the gtx 970m but it keeps saying cannot detect compatible GPU? I check my device manager and under Display adapter it does not show 2x gtx 970m it only shows the integrated CPU graphics. I tried msi vga driver and nvidia 970m drivers but it doesn't read my gtx 970m SLI gpus. Any idea how I can get them to be detected?

You have to switch to nvidia, I believe it's the button right under the power button. Then reboot.

Yes, when switched it won't show the Intel but should show the nvidia gpus instead. Get everything else installed just now.

Thanks guys! I stood up until 6am trying to figure out what's wrong since it's my first gt80 with the button switching graphics cards. I had to install SCM First and then pressing the GPU prompted a reset and afterwards it showed the 970ms. Got me worried all night! But now I know. :)

Hello, I am in the market for a kickass laptop and I was looking into the Titan sli-002 but I noticed it only has an hdmi 1.4 display port... the SLI-072 should be able to handle hdmi 2.0 right, but I looked at the specs and it is also has an hdmi 1.4 port... why?

it should be a better system right am I missing something? btw sorry if this is a noob question...

It's a mystery why MSI didn't upgrade the HDMI to 2.0, and why did MSI drop 1 of the 2 Mini Display Port outputs?

It may be because they added the SuperPort USB 3.1 + Thunderbolt 3.0.

If you need HDMI 2.0 and/or more DisplayPort connections, you might check into docks / dongles to convert to HDMI 2.0 and additional Display Port and VGA outputs.

Here are examples, untested, mDP / Thunderbolt to HDMI 2.0, looking for a USB 3.1 ended solution as well - that's why MSI should have left 2 mDP connections :)

Cable Matters® Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt™ Port Compatible) to HDMI Male to Female Adapter - 4K Resolution Ready
    http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters®-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-Compatible/dp/B00K0UDJFI/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1451024443&sr=1-2&keywords=hdmi+2.0+thunderbolt

Make sure they support 60hz if you need it, many don't say or state explicitly 30hz. It may be that a DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 conversion won't support 60hz...

    USB 3.1 + Thunderbolt / mDP solutions:
    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=computers&field-keywords=hdmi+2.0+usb+3.1

It's going to be hit or miss using dongles for Mac's on PC's, but sometimes it's plug and play, and worth a try.

TB3/USB 3.1 docks announced, not many/any shipping/available. Keep your eye's out for them coming out in 2016.

    OWC USB-C Dock Pre-order
    https://eshop.macsales.com/preorder/OWC-USB-C-Dock/

A nice review of TB2 Docks, follow to the manufacturer sites for announced / pre-order TB3 Docks.
    http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-thunderbolt-dock/

Native Thunderbolt 3 will support 2 x Displays at 4k@60hz. Will they be TB3 Displays, or mDP Displays supported?

I laugh at all of those that bought a cooling pad. You spend the money on a fine cooling laptop,Which you can even control how it cools, that cools itself with its nice powerful fans and cooling system, yet you need a cooling pad. This gave me a good laugh for the day. 001 SLI owner here since launch, windows 10 upgrade, and still no cooling pad needed here. Keep wasting your money on that useless garbage. Not only that why even bother buying a Titan if you're going to buy a pad.

Do you have a titan? If yes then you know how much is noisy the turbo mode,
If using a cooling pad can avoid us using the turbo mode then why not?

I have some hight temps with my gt80 that's why I ask for a cooling pad, another way is repasting, but I think it will not gives any plus.
In a previews post i think there was one guy, who use the HAVIT 2062, that gives him -10 c if im not wrong,I asked for more details but until now nothing.

I think that the Cooler Master CM Storm SF-19 v2 is probably a very good bet for getting those temps down...with 2 caveats.

!) Not out yet, so kinda speculating.
    2) For full functionality you will need to plug in its' power adapter to an AC outlet, so not so portable.

I am not familiar with the HAVIT 2062.

The cooling pad for me is a way to elevate the laptop and present the screen at a better angle for viewing.

The GT80 cools itself well enough, so a cooling pad isn't needed for me, but I live in a cool northern area.

If I were in the south where it is hotter a good part of the year, I might appreciate the additional air movement over the chassis to help reduce the case temperature.

The cooling pad also helps organize the space and routing of cables. When I take the laptop away, the cooling pad keeps the cables in place and space reserved for the laptop's return. This can be important when sharing the space with family members :)

If anyone is looking for a way to transport this beast, I have a solution that is working very well for my VAIO.
The case is an Explorer military grade unit that is currently on sale here:

    http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RXWNZW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

I took out the foam inserts and added at the bottom for accessories, power supply etc.:

Then, on top of this I added two of these (upside down) for holding cables accessories etc.

Then the panel for holding papers schematics etc (this is perfect for holding 13x19 printouts (without folding) that I get from my Epson Stylus Photo R1800), and also has pockets for holding...you guessed it, more accessories.

Then, the soft case for holding the laptop and cooler...I ordered this without the dividers since i ordered the dividers separately.

In Addition, I added this Bag, which has a slot on the back that slips down over the handle of the case and allows me to carry...you guessed it more accessories, drinks, and lunch!

It's perfect for some, but for me I would like the center section to raise up to elevate the GT80 screen.

From the single video available on youtube.com, the SF-19 V2 doesn't do that. I might still check it out and figure out a way to raise it for viewing. It would be nice to have the laptop sides rest on the tray, instead of hanging out over the edge - but actually - it's not been a problem.

This video shows the SF-17 elevation starting at 2:10

I agree, I will probably find or make a solution that will give me a proper angle and comfort level with the keyboard in the field, although I will probably use a wireless keyboard when in the office.. :)

I am in Texas!(Dallas)...It definitely gets hot here! In addition, my wife likes an ambient temp around 80 degrees Fahrenheit...A little stormy tonight, but i have battery backup.

For me I have learned over the years to not use the built in keyboard and trackpad, as keyboard liquid spills and food damage by someone are inevitable :)

After replacing keyboards in a number of family laptops, I decided to push the food and people particles away from the laptop / keyboard and use a wired or wireless keyboard / trackpad / mouse, including carrying a keyboard/mouse with me in my laptop bag.

Since then I haven't replaced a single laptop keyboard, and at resale all my laptops are like new. It's a visible difference to buyers.

For the GT80, raising up the laptop with a stand is going to preclude using the built-in keyboard comfortably, unless you build a ramp for your arm / hands to rest on - the keyboard lip is already high enough when flat.
