I have some questions about the GT80's system restore function. First things first: yes I made the restore discs on DVD and USB (USB is much faster). I figure, OK now I'm set. If need be, I can restore the system to its out of the box configuration. I have the GT80 263 SLI. My plan is to wipe everything and install Windows 7.
Now I'm looking at Disk Management and I'm a little confused. I was under the impression that the recovery partition was on the 1 TB drive, and indeed there is a 19 GB recovery partition there. However, there is also a 600 MB recovery partition on my first SSD along with a 300 MB EFI System partition and the OS partition (note: I have the RAID 0 disabled). Here's my drive layout:
1) What is the 600 MB recovery partition for--does it need to exist?
2) Is the 19 GB partition on the 1 TB HDD needed any longer since I've already made the recovery USB/DVDs--can I delete it?
3) Once I wipe everything and install Windows 7, I assume MSI's F3 restore function will no longer work--true?
And finally, what's up with the EFI System partition? I figure the EFI System partition works with the UEFI BIOS, but beyond that I don't know much. Pardon my ignorance here, but I'm upgrading from a nine year old system--there was no UEFI.
4) Is the EFI System partition necessary?
5) Will the system boot without it?
6) How is it created--by the BIOS or Windows or...?
7) If I were to replace the two SSDs and install Windows 7, how do I recreate the EFI System partition on the new SSD?
Thanks for any and all help. -

There might only be 2 x M.2 slots active in the new GT80's... I hope they keep all 4 active, but the specs don't show that, so you could be limited to 1TB now or 2TB after 2016 release of the 1TB M.2's.
Hopefully prices will continue to drop and make the M.2 PCIE x4 price on par with storage size.mason2smart likes this. -
best part of pcie and sata combination over only sata combination is that, backing up image and restoring image will be blazing fast. since DMI 3.0 is 3.6GB/s read AND write capable as long as chipset can handle it, while backing up image DMI will be constantly reading at high speed, and backing up onto SATA raid 0 which is writing at say 1500MB/s.
now if you only have 4 sata in raid 0, when read you get 1600 and write you get 1600, but doing read and write sata can't possibly keep up and performance on that end is a huge difference. may as well go ultra high end if you know what im saying.
aside from that theres also other benefits, such as samsung might release rapid mode with raid 0 950 pro capable, or getting much faster load time in games. since i do a lot of video encoding, and also large ram disk I can take advantage of fast sequential speed. when it comes to vmware I can just have them on sata so it doesnt slow down my main OS and software.
i guess its how one would distribute their work load to achieve max performance out of the hardware. -

Yea there's one at gentech as well... But it is the 002 model. My parents want to order it within the next two weeks so I can get it around thanksgiving break (my present for good grades this nine weeks
!) Do you think that if I ask them to put in a non-finalized pre-order for the 980 sli, it will be released and ship by Thanksgiving Break?
-
Calling the sellers and posing the situation to them, they might make a pre-order date / sku for the GT80S SLI 980 for your parents to order against, then again, maybe not, but it's worth a try.
You could ask for a Parents Gift Card - good for one GT80S SLI 980 when it ships, you might get lucky and get a book of gift cards - with some "no chores" cards toomason2smart likes this. -

I was going to ask about the registration for the accidental damage warranty.... If I get the laptop custom ordered, do i need to have them register it within the first 30 days?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The gt80s is basically the skylake range and covers the other gpus variants too. Assuming it's an authorised reseller like ourselves it's 30 days when you get it. I'd advise to do it immediately when getting it so you don't forget.

Domestic we ship it, I would always reach out to the reseller first anyway for issues and they would guide you on the best way to handle it.

Hi there, I just picked up a GT80 Titan and I have a few questions. Is there some sort of a guide for when to use the different performance settings available on this computer? There are 8 of them in 3 different sets so I find myself a wee bit lost here. Here's what I'm talking about-
The ECO settings: Entertainment, Presentation, Gaming and office
The Shift Modes: Green, Comfort and sport
and High performance mode
All three settings can be used in conjunction and I'm just not sure which to use for what. -

@mason2smart yes we would. But to get the full break down of our terms and conditions for all our models go to our front page, look at the link at the bottom under "need help" and click on warranties. We clearly lay out the terms in clear English for any of our warranties so you know 100% where you stand
If anything on there is not clear to you feel free to clarify with us, but I'd be surprised if you have to. -
Found an explanation of what Microcode 13h is on another laptop model at MSI, :
"Update CPU Microcode Revision 13h.
Note For GT72 models with the 5th Generation Intel ® Core i7 Processor."
I will try it out this weekend, and let you all know if there are any problems / improvements - I have a 5950HQ Broadwell CPU. Please let us know if you try it and find any good changes.
I would assume there will be another BIOS update with the Microcode Revision for SkylakeLast edited: Oct 23, 2015 -

You will need a photo/scan of the receipt for proof of purchase to attach to the warranty form.
For me it also added 3 months to the warranty for the GT80 by doing it quickly - IDK what the time limit is for sure, it is usually 3 days to 2 weeks.mason2smart likes this. -

XoticPC are listing the GT80S with the Skylake but without he desktop 980SLI for some reason.
Anyways the price seems pretty good but I got confused on their "configuration" page because the stuff in so many options.. -
What is the status on the upgrade program that was originally promised? Has that just simply disappeared?

Since only two of the M.2 slots are connected to SATA3 in the Skylake models, does anybody have any idea if the ODD bay has been bumped up to 6Gbps?

@hmscott u know u want it, the skylake and 64gb of ram. time to upgrademason2smart and hmscott like this. -
New SSD technologies are on the way next year that might make it in to the GT80 of 1 year from now.
Also, there should be 2+ releases of new CPU's by Pascal release. The GT4 / EDRAM equipped Skylake is coming soon, and the Kabylake's with new / updated chipsets with even more PCIe lanes and perhaps an updated storage interface.
If the GT80 rev for Pascal has a enough new fun stuff it will be time for a full frame upgrade, or I will upgrade the 2 GPU's, which was the point of getting a laptop with upgradeable GPU'szziplex, ole!!! and mason2smart like this. -
I am able to run my 5950HQ @ 42x on all 4 cores, and that is a plus.
So far I am stable.
Both the BIOS/EC are updates for Broadwell, so if you are on Haswell, they are probably not needed.Last edited: Oct 25, 2015ole!!! likes this. -

My parents were angry with me for trying to put in 1tb ssd's and said i should use it stock.
Can anyone give me a reason as to why MSI sells it with only 256gb ssd in the first place? -

if you're waiting for pascal, then wait a bit longer for 2yrs, cannonlake and pascal together + 3DXpoint SSD from intel, it is said to be 3-5x faster than samsung 950 pro, for as long as bandwidth allows it and no bottleneck.
im tempted to upgrade simply because CPU isnt fast enough anymore even at 4.7ghz and the fan is so loud LOL. when i get GT80s i will be modding my heatsink and storage anyway.. i can only hope theres no TDP restriction in the GT80 and go for pair of 980Ms
